Ok, so here's where they force everyone into working. You don't actually get a free badge. You get reimbursed based upon the hours you work as a volunteer. Work all weekend, 8hrs a day? Cool, you get reimbursed for your badge. Work half the weekend? Half the price of the badge. Work one day, 4hr shift? Womp womp, you get absolutely nothing. Also, you don't instantly get backstage access to the drama. In order to qualify for that, you have to have a staff member bring you into the drama, and they very allow volunteers around when shit goes south.

Also, you have to preorder your 3-day badge and send all the info to the head of whatever dept you're working for. Then they have to turn around and give it all to programming. There have been a few instances when programming has a bad day and they flat out deny reimbursement to volunteers. It's a huge clusterfuck. Best way to fuck the con over is to just not volunteer.

I'd also like to add that reimbursement for the badge after hours worked is a method of trying to keep attrition rates low. It's not an uncommon practice and some other cons in the state also do it...but with AMs track record of playing literally anyone it's not surprising to hear people have a hard time getting paid back.

anime cons are full of flakes which is why most of them are also organized poorly when there's enough at the staff level, most cons give you reimbursement for badges after you've complete the required hours or else there would be tons of people walking around with free badges without the work

A lot of anime cons DON'T give even staff free hotel rooms, I only know a couple off the top of my head?

However, with every other con, at least they're known for being reliable about compensation... you can't really trust Anime Matsuri to even reimburse your badge when they're all running around like headless chickens during the con since the upper level staff know nothing since J&D spring stuff on them last minute

For people in Houston, you could try to make Comicpalooza a thing... however if the date doesn't change, it's up against established anime cons like Fanime, Momocon, Animazement which means it will be hard to get A-list english VAs if you want the bulk of the anime crowd to attend.

How often have you volunteered? There's always people walking around with free badges without doing the work and yes, cons giving staff free rooms happens. They have to share them with other staffers (sometimes a lot of other staffers and people sleep in shifts) but it is a thing. Maybe we're just spoiled here in Houston.

Also Comicpalooza is definitely a thing (a massive thing) and they've always had A-list English VAs because a ton of them live around here. They often do the smaller cons around here (Delta H and Oni) too because the drive is negligible and, in the case of Oni, there are VAs who are heavily involved with the convention. They're also networked heavily with the local creative community and press so Comicpalooza is incredibly hard to get away from unless you're living under a rock every spring.

Tons of cons. Like I said, they're shared with other staffers, sometimes a lot of them, who have to sleep in shifts but off the top of my head I know Comicpalooza and A-kon both do this and from what I've heard from friends who volunteer at 4-5 cons a year it happens more often than not. It's not like they're giving out free rooms to like one or two people to be comfy in though, they're like bunkhouses and a lot of people choose to not stay in them because they get cramped pretty quickly and the sleeping in shifts thing is awkward.

The anon talking about AM's volunteer policies being normal is just posting a bunch of bullshit. Like other anons have mentioned, many other anime conventions, and conventions in general, operate off of the honor system when it comes to volunteers. A-Kon gives you room, board, and apparently food this year without you having to purchase a badge up front. Most volunteers do their work, as surprising as that may seem. There are a handful of people who just get their free badge and bounce, but that's really only a trick you can pull one time. Anime Matsuri's policies are absolutely not normal. You should never have to buy your badge up front and "earn" what was promised to you, and if any con withholds what it promised to you, you need to go straight to the TWC. Volunteering does not mean slavery.

Sexual harassment is one of those things that is not really something that is prosecuted on or taken to court criminally. With screencaps, the most authorities will say is something like "Oh well stop talking to them" and end it with that. If anything it can probably be taken through civil court, but that's expensive and Leighs will out pay them and shit. I reported sexual harassment that happened to me before to police and all I got was a "well we can't do anything cause there's nothing happening in the act, avoid them if you can". HouPop is never going to have their own venue. They’ve been saying they were going to have a con and have been selling badges/vendor space for their con since around the time Space City Comic Con got in trouble for stiffing the Sons of Anarchy cast. They just rented out booth space at AM to rent out to other vendors (all of them are very flea market-esque btw) and have their own guests so Johnny Steverson can keep up the ruse that he’s a major player in the convention scene even though his biggest claims to fame so far have been the SCCC fiasco and another scam he did involving a Harry Potter mud run. Yeah, I was told the adhesive holding a lot of the photos up was the issue. When it was all said and done they started letting people in around 6:45.
As someone who already owns the groundwork books, there wasn't a while lot of new content. It was nice to see some of the work in person, but aside from that it wasn't that interesting. Also not all of the merch for the store came in on time so they were missing major items like Asuka's jacket.

I'm here now. It definitely feels smaller than previous years. The car show is jammed in the same area as the cosplay stuff. Artist alley is pretty packed full of people but there are plenty of empty tables also. Haven't checked the dealer area or panels yet.

It’s help me filter out the cosplay clout chasers of the bigger names in my local community though since most reputable and/or good people in the scene aren’t touching this con with a ten foot pole. I love how no one even dared to make Matsuri posts until the day of since they knew they would get people judging them for going.

I can understand going though if you already bought your badge and or hotel, and can’t get a refund which fucking sucks. And most people are making a point that this is their last Matsuri after this, which I can appreciate. But if you make dumbass posts defending the con and your decision to go, or bought the badge and went anyways despite knowing why people are boycotting, wyd?
