>> No.9816737

I’d pay cash money to see the internal chaos that has to be going on right now. I’ve heard they have nowhere near the number of volunteers they need—Daniela’s still begging for volunteers in the FB group so it’s probably true.

They never have enough volunteers. It doesn't surprise me at all that she's begging. She begged one of my friends to "work a half day shift" at a booth. Turns out that "half day" is now all weekend, all day.

>> No.9816778

>>9816772
What's the worst thing that could happen if I volunteer and just decide to fuck off midway? I get banned from the con? Because I'm considering doing that. Free pass, backstage pass to the drama, and I get to say I was banned from AM.

>> No.9816787

>>9816778
Ok, so here's where they force everyone into working. You don't actually get a free badge. You get reimbursed based upon the hours you work as a volunteer. Work all weekend, 8hrs a day? Cool, you get reimbursed for your badge. Work half the weekend? Half the price of the badge. Work one day, 4hr shift? Womp womp, you get absolutely nothing. Also, you don't instantly get backstage access to the drama. In order to qualify for that, you have to have a staff member bring you into the drama, and they very allow volunteers around when shit goes south.

>> No.9816793

>>9816787
Also, you have to preorder your 3-day badge and send all the info to the head of whatever dept you're working for. Then they have to turn around and give it all to programming. There have been a few instances when programming has a bad day and they flat out deny reimbursement to volunteers. It's a huge clusterfuck. Best way to fuck the con over is to just not volunteer.

Also if you've been vocal about the boycott even a little bit they're not going to let you volunteer. I know this year attracted a lot of attention from local content creators, etc, mostly because of the esports stuff needing talent and also there's tons of people like you who just want to see shit go south, but anyone who didn't look like they would drink the AM kool-aid was turned down.

VOLUNTEERS
You agree to do it without pay. A con chooses to give you perks. Usually those perks are equal to the work you do.

If it was illegal pretty much every con in the country would be shut down.

Again, AM has plenty of legit shit, don't make a big deal over nothings. Argue that AM perks are subpar, but the system is the same accross pretty much every fan con.

Yea, you agree to work the con without pay, but the con tells you "oh hey, we'll give you a reimbursement for working." They don't tell you that you only get a reimbursement for your full price badge if you work all weekend, and basically miss the con.

>> No.9816857

I don't like AM but sure. There are plenty of actual legit issues like sexual harrassment, mistreating guests, crazy exclusivity contracts, massive debt... Making a huge deal out of something every other con does doesn't help your cause.

>>9816839
No, some cons are non-profit but a lot of them are filed as LLCs.

>>9816847
Yes, this is a complaint about how poorly AM is about being transparent with their volunteer requirements. This is the type of comment that helps, not ITS ILLEGAL!!!

I'd also like to add that reimbursement for the badge after hours worked is a method of trying to keep attrition rates low. It's not an uncommon practice and some other cons in the state also do it...but with AMs track record of playing literally anyone it's not surprising to hear people have a hard time getting paid back.

>> No.9816874

anime cons are full of flakes which is why most of them are also organized poorly when there's enough at the staff level, most cons give you reimbursement for badges after you've complete the required hours or else there would be tons of people walking around with free badges without the work

A lot of anime cons DON'T give even staff free hotel rooms, I only know a couple off the top of my head?

However, with every other con, at least they're known for being reliable about compensation... you can't really trust Anime Matsuri to even reimburse your badge when they're all running around like headless chickens during the con since the upper level staff know nothing since J&D spring stuff on them last minute

For people in Houston, you could try to make Comicpalooza a thing... however if the date doesn't change, it's up against established anime cons like Fanime, Momocon, Animazement which means it will be hard to get A-list english VAs if you want the bulk of the anime crowd to attend.

>> No.9816982

>>9816950

How often have you volunteered? There's always people walking around with free badges without doing the work and yes, cons giving staff free rooms happens. They have to share them with other staffers (sometimes a lot of other staffers and people sleep in shifts) but it is a thing. Maybe we're just spoiled here in Houston.

Also Comicpalooza is definitely a thing (a massive thing) and they've always had A-list English VAs because a ton of them live around here. They often do the smaller cons around here (Delta H and Oni) too because the drive is negligible and, in the case of Oni, there are VAs who are heavily involved with the convention. They're also networked heavily with the local creative community and press so Comicpalooza is incredibly hard to get away from unless you're living under a rock every spring.

>> No.9817000

>>9816990

Tons of cons. Like I said, they're shared with other staffers, sometimes a lot of them, who have to sleep in shifts but off the top of my head I know Comicpalooza and A-kon both do this and from what I've heard from friends who volunteer at 4-5 cons a year it happens more often than not. It's not like they're giving out free rooms to like one or two people to be comfy in though, they're like bunkhouses and a lot of people choose to not stay in them because they get cramped pretty quickly and the sleeping in shifts thing is awkward.

The anon talking about AM's volunteer policies being normal is just posting a bunch of bullshit. Like other anons have mentioned, many other anime conventions, and conventions in general, operate off of the honor system when it comes to volunteers. A-Kon gives you room, board, and apparently food this year without you having to purchase a badge up front. Most volunteers do their work, as surprising as that may seem. There are a handful of people who just get their free badge and bounce, but that's really only a trick you can pull one time. Anime Matsuri's policies are absolutely not normal. You should never have to buy your badge up front and "earn" what was promised to you, and if any con withholds what it promised to you, you need to go straight to the TWC. Volunteering does not mean slavery.

From that incident with the "free tickets" that John claimed to be giving years ago to the doxxing, it really shows how far AM staff and fanatics will go out of their way to sabotage any other competitor. Delta-H is far from being my favorite convention (doesn't have Japanese guests), but repeatedly sabotaging someone else rather than trying to at least coexist is fucking pathetic. ALA and AX don't constantly try to sabotage each other, from what I know, so AM has no excuse to be sabotaging other cons directly or indirectly.

Serious question, not baiting, genuinely curious

Even if AM is (seemingly from what I gathered) getting passes on their poor business practises, was the authorities ever brought up on the sexual harassment allegations? If not, why not? It just seems like if we have this much evidence and people speaking up on this, especially considering how seriously sexual harassment allegations are being taken in court nowadays, the issue itself wouldn't have gotten this far

And this is only speaking on the sexual harassment, not the other fucked up shit the Leighs are doing

>> No.9828531

>>9828401
Sexual harassment is one of those things that is not really something that is prosecuted on or taken to court criminally. With screencaps, the most authorities will say is something like "Oh well stop talking to them" and end it with that. If anything it can probably be taken through civil court, but that's expensive and Leighs will out pay them and shit. I reported sexual harassment that happened to me before to police and all I got was a "well we can't do anything cause there's nothing happening in the act, avoid them if you can". It sucks, so that's why people but them on blast so they can face some kind of repercussion by the public since the laws won't help.

Sexual harassment itself is not illegal unless it is committed against a child, but even then it requires hard evidence. A lot of harassment comes from verbal or physical interactions, which are seldom recorded or witnessed. Even when it's in some text form. people block their aggressor, which sometimes deletes the evidence, or they don't come forward for so long that the evidence is lost in other ways like text history being lost when you switch to a new phone.

Look at Weinstein or Spacey or anyone that MeToo has rallied against. Just about all anyone has are stories, no concrete evidence. So nothing legal can be done, but that doesn't stop the court of public opinion.

The only reason people like >>9828594 can say something like this, is if they deny almost every story of sexual harassment.

HouPop is never going to have their own venue. They’ve been saying they were going to have a con and have been selling badges/vendor space for their con since around the time Space City Comic Con got in trouble for stiffing the Sons of Anarchy cast. They just rented out booth space at AM to rent out to other vendors (all of them are very flea market-esque btw) and have their own guests so Johnny Steverson can keep up the ruse that he’s a major player in the convention scene even though his biggest claims to fame so far have been the SCCC fiasco and another scam he did involving a Harry Potter mud run. AM was probably the only con that allowed him to leech off them and a lot of insiders are expecting him to pull a SCCC on Doug Jones too, if he even actually shows up.

I get not blaming victims, but if you can read that and not find at least 3 times where you say "well then why did you do that?"
the girl was obviously into him, and John acted on it.

this is also assuming that this is real. the boycott page is notorious for lying and making shit up hoping it goes viral. I would be surprised 0% if they just wrote that hoping it would.

1. It's back during that golden Planet Zero era from like 10 years ago, so it's believable

2. the boycott page is run by smug children quick to call anything and everything they possibly can. They scrap the bottom of the barrel hoping to support their case. If they had this last week, they would have shared it last week. I bet they were upset with how little evidence they were getting after posting that "hey if you were a volunteer/staff, message us your story" status, so they wrote this up.

3. it's supposedly a girl who actively did whatever they were asked, reciprocated sexual attention and just because she's like "well i was young and NOW I regret it" we're supposed to just agree and call it harassment? cheating, I get, but this just smells like bullshit.

tl;dr I don't believe it in the slightest. even if I did, the girl literally had consensual sex. regretting it years later is not anyone's problem but hers.

I regret having consensual sex with some ppl too, i guess i was abused too. Attention please.

Yeah, I was told the adhesive holding a lot of the photos up was the issue. When it was all said and done they started letting people in around 6:45.
As someone who already owns the groundwork books, there wasn't a while lot of new content. It was nice to see some of the work in person, but aside from that it wasn't that interesting. Also not all of the merch for the store came in on time so they were missing major items like Asuka's jacket.

Agreed. It’s help me filter out the cosplay clout chasers of the bigger names in my local community though since most reputable and/or good people in the scene aren’t touching this con with a ten foot pole. I love how no one even dared to make Matsuri posts until the day of since they knew they would get people judging them for going.

I can understand going though if you already bought your badge and or hotel, and can’t get a refund which fucking sucks. And most people are making a point that this is their last Matsuri after this, which I can appreciate. But if you make dumbass posts defending the con and your decision to go, or bought the badge and went anyways despite knowing why people are boycotting, wyd? There are even day one posts in the facebook group complaining about how much of a shitshow it is this year.
