The problem has never been badge checking. It's either the right color or the wrong color, that's it. With large crowds the doormen have always just checked as much as they could and if people squeak by then whatever. RFID is all about eliminating ghosting. I've been to SDCC which also uses RFID and the flow is fine. It's a cash grab.

The true cause of slowdowns is bag checks and honestly I'm not a fan of them period. Your defense depends entirely on how much of a shit the checker gives and let's be honest, some guy getting paid minimum wage does not give a fuck especially when they've been doing it for hours. This also assumes that you're not just hiding a weapon on your person and with the size of certain costumes you can carry in quite a bit of contraband. As long as there are bag checks there will be massive crowds and slow lines.

Overcrowding is always a concern. The convention felt packed at 60k and 100k is just straight ridiculous.

I don't know what music guests they're getting but that's always been my bread and butter. Went to both Anisong concerts and both AKFG concerts last year.

The AX discord is trash. There's one user that's a "veteran" and they're really annoying. General chat is cancer, conversations don't last long. Not much help for questions, so you're better off using reddit. I too still have nightmares of last years AX. I'm praying to the animu gods that the pickup line for swag bags do not sell out -_-. I can't tell you how many times I've gone on day 0 or day 1 and get "oh sorry we're out of this lanyard , take the shitty ugly one" or "we're out of the bag, but take the magazine catalog!" Absolutely loved waiting so long in line for that :)))))

I was there last year. I'm a loser who doesn't know how into parties so I can't speak on that front, but as for access it's fair, not great but not terrible like the Ktown hotels. Just a bit too far to walk unless you really enjoy walking. I usually walked to the closest metro stop (about 2 blocks iirc) and then rode to the con center stop, but going back to the hotel at night I'd take the AX buses since there's less of a hurry.

However, if you're someone who goes back to their room frequently (e.g. for switching cosplays every 3 hours) the commute time might get annoying, it does add up a lot compared to the hotels that are right next door to the LACC.

Meet n greet autograph events, artists alley, and dealers area is pretty fun. Also, there might be panel events announced later that might get your attention.

Merch that's not easy to find outside of of the con. I sometimes buy stuff on impulse so I always ask myself "do I really want or need it?" And if "kinda" I dont get it. I buy a lot of art books, art magazine or manga I would have to purchase online. Doujinshi and figurines are cool too.

Yeah, the LACC is letting them stay for dirt cheap. Hence they would have moved out long time ago since there are constant complaints from all walks of life that attend AX every year.

Also, their placement for the RFID scanner is where I was expecting them to be. Can't step foot inside the LACC without a badge now.

Stayed at the Westin last year. The one night I didn't stay out all night, there was partying going on at the rooftop pool. Lots of people to chill with, some people brought a tv and Sm4sh up there, twerking on the trees. It was aight. Ended up going to another party after they closed the rooftop area.

I got a pretty good deal on a big room for 3 nights (days 0-3) but this is my first time going alone to convention. I've been to AX 2016 for only one day and I'm still made about missing Ali Project at 2017. I really hope I'm not gonna fall into convention hype mode and end up bored wandering around like an autist when I actually get there since I'm not too interested in any of the events or panels in particular. I'm more fond of the actual cosplay and meeting people but I feel like anybody who actually wants to socialize would already have a group of friends and I don't really feel like people want to pick up a rando weirdo they just met at a con. Hoping I can get some nice pictures of other cosplayers instead of the other way around but since I'm doing an obscure as fuck cosplay I don't think that'll bother me too much.

Used to go every year to AX since 2007 but haven't been since 2014. I hear nothing but horror stories now and when I went to ALA this year everyone was just saying about how much better it was than AX and how AX is so awful now.

Despite this a big group of my friends from around the country and a few international friends are coming out at the same time to go on Saturday. I'm planning to arm everyone with water bottles and snacks, have designated meeting spots at specific times if we split up, and ask them to try to check their phones roughly hourly on our group discord just in case. The last time I went with a big group as opposed to just one other friend it was kind of a disaster so I want to make sure things will run as smoothly as possible.

Truthfully the discords are not very good most of the time and the decent folk leave after seeing how things are in them. If you decide to join, please be careful because certain members are seriously creepy and enjoy sucking people into drama even if they don't seem that way.

On the other hand, I did meet a really cool gull in one of these threads last time! We hung out during the con and talk even today. I'd recommend throwing out a feeler if you can, that's probably your best option to find good people. You can always try making friends at the con too by going to the cosplay gatherings.

If you want to be in the convention center (most convenient parking) go early. Costs $20 but it's well worth it because you can drop stuff you buy off, leave snacks/drinks in the car to replenish with, take a nap, etc. There are a lot of lots surrounding the place and prices vary. There's also fairly cheap prepaid parking via some lots by sites like parking panda which is good because that same lot is $20+ if you were to pay on site. You can also get long term parking too. The bad thing about those lots is that while they're still close if you are going to visit during the day it's going to be hot.

So, I have Westin booked along with JW booked.

Ive stayed at the Westin the past two years and theyve been really accomodating. Gave me a two bed room both years even though I booked a 1 bed only. The little strip mall on floor 4(?) was helpful for food and snack runs throughout the day. Parking across the street was cheaper than the valet over the weekend. Only upside I see to going with JW is closer walk to AX. Where would you stay at anons? I pretty much run solo if that adds to the decision.

I booked Westin back in September of last year since Ive stayed there twice already and zero complaints on both times. I booked JW in Nov when I saw it had open rooms and thought I could use the walking distance in the event I would wanna line up for autograph tickets and wanna go back to my hotel room within 5 mins to do something. I just gotta make sure I cancel one of the reservations before July 1 or I get charge a nights stay which is $173 for either JW and Westin. That should also open up the room for someone else to book.

Bring good shoes or at the least have a backup pair like flats for when your feet start to kill you
Bring USB battery pack(s) for your phone
Having snacks is a good idea to help you get by between large meals. For that matter, remember to eat those large meals
Hydrate when possible. Bring a small water bottle so you don't have to hunt for a fountain and refill when you can.
Make sure to have a bag to help carry all your essentials and whatever random stuff you might find along the way
Try to limit your time outdoors if possible. LA heat can get to you over time. Again, remember to hydrate.
Related to the above bring sunscreen if you do happen to be stuck outdoors in the sun

For AX run autographs if you aren't there early as in 6-7AM you're probably not getting one. If it's an industry autograph times will vary
AX lines are really fucking long. You will be in them a lot. If there's a panel or event you want to see count on having to get there at least an hour or more especially if its a popular franchise.
While in line talk to people around you. Helps pass the time, swapping info is great, and maybe you'll even make some friends.
The LACC is spread out so make sure you have enough time to walk to places. Dealers hall is pretty much opposite from all events, for example.

I like food trucks but they aren't around late night (also pricey). There's a few establishments like Hooters, Lawry's Carvery, Yardhouse in the immediate area near LA Live. There's also a Denny's and an IHOP a little further down. The closest grocery store is Ralph's so that might be your best bet for cheap eats like throwing a sandwich together and some ziploc bags and some fruit. If you have any friends who are local have them hit up the Costco in Glendale for some snacks and drinks and split it amongst you and your friends.

In general for my larger meals I go out to eat with friends who have cars if I haven't driven down myself. You can always split an uber too.

AX is pretty fucking huge in terms of crowd capacity so mentally prepare yourself for standing in lines and breathing down someone's neck. Stay hydrated, don't buy food inside of the convention center, wear comfortable shoes, and try not to rush around too much. Soak in the atmosphere, it's only around for a short weekend once a year. And if you really have more questions, there's some pretty detailed youtube vids on the subject. Have fun!

In the day I usually eat what's around the convention if I eat anything at all. Last year, I stayed at Westin so I would walk to the con in the morning and stop by 85°Bakery.

At night I Uber to KTown for dinner and pregame. A lot of the restaurants close late too. If you have a car, there's a free parking garage near Coco Ichibanya but it's kind of hidden.

fyi, the "danger dogs" aren't an AX specialty. It's a phenomenon native to other parts of LA as well, particularly outside of concert venues and random streets in DTLA. In general, Southern California tends to have a lot of street vendors. With the new law passed allowing them to exist w/ a permit, you can expect that the quality will greatly improve. I doubt they'll be much of a price hike if any. (But $1.25 for a bacon wrapped dog with grilled onions, bell peppers, and sometimes a jalepeno isn't too shabby imo)

What is your recipe for the "full con experience"? I feel like I haven't done everything to get my money or time's worth out of my stay. As a local I don't need to fly out or stay in a hotel room, but other than that what experiences do you feel are vital to attending a con?
