9814718 No.9814718 [Reply] [Original]

I think its funny when the 18-25 year old crowd at conventions will say "eww who even comes to these once you're 30"

Do you KNOW who's actually organizing these things? Do you *really* think that same 18-25 demographic is financially responsible and liable for damages? Do you suppose the same kids that have trouble organizing a lunch or a cosplay meetup have the capacity to run an event, let alone with zero problems??

These are the same people that have trouble arriving to programming or picking up a badge. I really don't see them having the wherewithal to organize a room party, even.

I mean, I have absolutely no issue with 30+ attendees and think they bring cool perspective on the industry

but

yes?

As a high level staffer for a mid sized con, 90% of our staff, including our core staff such as the Board, are under the age of 30. 20-Somethings are making purchase orders for T-shirts, plushies, and other convention merch through overseas contacts. They're also booking guests, handling guest agents and contracts. They're writing grant applications. They're finalizing paperwork with the convention center for dates, rooms, fees, deadlines. A LOT of them are sending business emails to vendors and industry contacts between college classes or after they get home from shitty retail jobs.

It’s not
> The same people
Who are failing at organizing other events, but yes, it is the same age range. I count myself as lucky to be part of a group of peers with extreme enthusiasm and dedication for anime and conventions, regardless of if they’re five years younger or five years older than I am.

Although in my experience with networking for other conventions, staff for western comic cons skews much older towards the 30+ demographic.

I'm willing to bet if you averaged the age of your entire BoD, that number would be between 25-30, about the time your frontal lobes are fully grown.

I don’t bother at all with underage girls or lewd cosplays, it’s not even the risk of being called a creeper, I don’t want to get caught up in whatever teen drama or shit they have going on, so it’s better to avoid them entirely.

If you have trouble finding friends who are willing to go with you, try finding weeby interest groups to participate in, I recently found a gamers group in my area and we’re down to discussing whether it’s feasible to do a LAN party at an upcoming con.

The Logan's Run mentality is retarded so you're on the right track. I'm 34 and still have the same hobbies as I did when I was 25. Another thing when you get older is dating takes less of a priority and your hobbies become even more important. If you're a thirsty neckbeard or a costhot then you're going to be going to cons for completely different reasons than for someone there for their hobbies. Cons are for fun and I don't let some "whippersnapper" ruin my fun because I'm living life the way I want at the irreversible rate that the years pass. It's actually a sign of immaturity to be that judgmental of people older than you. You grow out of it and stop giving a fuck after hitting 30.

Hell, I'm 34 and still go to various cons. Really though the best thing about going to cons at an older age is now (hopefully) you have "some" disposable income to not have to worry about the varying cost of cons.(travel, badge and hotel)

Its a damn good feeling to not have to play the room stuffing game in order to attend a con, then again a lot of older Millennials are starting to come into some money now. Maybe that's why a lot of these con hotels are starting to sell out at a quicker rate these days.

Nah. Just volunteer at cons alongside your actual work experience. It can be anything from office manager, sales, marketing, to graphic designer. Eventually a tradeshow company will hire for that kind of entry leve role and work your way up into some sort of Project Manager role.

Generally event companies want event/tradeshow experience. With cons, you'll qualify. There are tradeshows for all sorts of industries, pick one.

Don't give up. :) The hours can be a little long and the work is fast-paced, but if you're a people person, have high energy and enjoy events, you'll fit in.

You might not get what you want the first time but if you snoop along the right channels you'll eventually get to where you need to be. Good con staff are very vigilant in noticing passionate employees and will do what they can to make sure you're happy enough doing stuff so you don't leave. My personal strategy was to take a project I like doing and then used it as leverage at other places to show my skills.

I was hoping for years that I coyld make a friend to go to a con with, but it never happened. As I got older, I came to realize maybe it just wasn't for me. I suppose it's better than druvung by myself for hours, possibly being in a hotel room alone, all to end up like the "my feet hurt" comic at the con.

>cosplay from x series
>talk to other people in character
>"Oh you seem pretty cool, lets go to x panel or grab y drink or order z for dinner!"
I've had it happen dozens of times. Just commit to a fandom, commit to a character, want it enough, and the rest will follow.

I mean the age argument is more commonly thrown around in jfash communities. Anime cons started out as mostly adult attended because anime was so hard to access.

I don't know, literal LARPing and not bwing a sperg are pretty apposed to each other

you're in a niche hobby occupied by 95% social rejects, the boundaries of sperging have been expanding exponentially compared to normie territory.

Too much cringe for me.
Srsly, for roleplay I feel really too old.

lmao are you a fucking retard
30 is when you actually have enough money to AFFORD your childish hobbies.

>> No.9865552

Yeah I'd say the people who say that are just dicks. Anyone that's mature enough wouldn't have that point of view, at least that maturity being on the level of the typical young adult. You're awesome btw Masa, keep doing what you love.

Cons are for meeting up with all of my friends who live inside my computer. I serendipitously found out 2 friends from my high school go to cons in the area, but otherwise I travel to big cons that chunks of my online friends go to. Try looking for sane people around your age in fandoms you like.

Pretty much this. If you see yourself "growing out of" the hobby, save yourself of time/cash and drop it now. I've been here since I was underage b&, now I'm 30. I find that while my tastes have gotten more specific and most of my time is spent doing other hobbies, I still very much enjoy anime/vidya.

For the bigger cons, I'd say the median age of senior staff is probably closer to 35.

I also think it's utterly hilarious that this viewpoint seems to be almost entirely confined to anime-ish cons; other cons tend to skew much, *much* older.

Why can't it still be this way? The average age going down to 16-21 is what turned anime cons into drama.

Same. Lots of my cosplay friends are 10 years younger than me.

Please do a cosplay with mask, full body costume with armor or something or a older character. It looks really stupid when older people cosplaying young characters.
