9814554 No.9814554 [Reply] [Original]

Tekko 2018 is April 5-8th in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Who’s going? Are you going for anime or fashion? Fashion track is looking pretty great this year!

>> No.9814558

I applied to model for Baby/aatp, I haven’t heard anything yet about whether I got in or not -sweats-

>> No.9814562

>>9814558
I have not heard back either. I emailed the staff about times for rehearsal, and nothing back.

I'm excited, I'm doing a bunch of things. Definitely going for J-fashion! I'm really excited that they got some non-lolita stuff this year.

I will be there. Rushing running and stretching the budget to pull off all my coords planned for Tekko.

Same, I'm dying

>> No.9814836

Does anyone want to have a cgl meet up for the heck of it? I'm going alone and would like some other people to hang out with!

>> No.9814923

I'll be there. Making a point of going to the Fate and Fire Emblem shoots, if my cosplays get done in time. First time really giving a shit about going but I've been going for a few years now. It's really chill but doesn't seem super lively?

>> No.9814931

BUT IT'S A FASHION CON NOW THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT ANIME ANYMORE

i'm really excited about all the cool stuff they got for this year, gonna be a good time

>> No.9814993

>>9814931
Honestly good, we need more fashion-centered cons in the US.

>> No.9814994

I'm sad I have to miss it this year because I've gone the past few.

>> No.9817404

How difficult is it to ghost this con? I want to stop in for a day but looks like they aren't selling day passes.

>> No.9817540

>>9817404
Gonna be pretty hard this year since registration is on the first floor, and you have to pass a badge check to get upstairs.
Idk how much the knitting con is, but if you can register for that cheaper than Tekko would cost, you could at least get onto the floor.

>> No.9817583

I just look forward to the game room, the japanese games are pretty fun and can only play them once a year

>> No.9817754

Who all got into the fashion show? What brands are you modeling for?

>> No.9820648

>>9820482
Last year I went to Tekko, Hazardcon, Replay FX, and Colossalcon East. Replay FX was the most expensive with the biggest arcade (since the whole thing is an arcade), but it was also the hardest to play Japanese games at. I only recommend it if you are local (so you dont have to pay for a hotel or travel costs) and/or if you're only going for a day.

>> No.9821014

I'll be going alone.

Tekko has always been shitty, but it's something to do for a weekend. Panels suck and there are too many 12 year olds.

>> No.9821757

Why did so many people who don’t know what Lolita is buy tickets to the tea party

>> No.9821806

>>9821757
Because they can't read. I feel bad for actual Lolitas who want to go.

>> No.9821813

>> No.9821814

>>9821757
THIS.
And then they complain that they didn't know there was a dress code. Before I actually got adequate pieces for the fashion, I never went to events because the assumption was you'd need to actually wear lolita to participate.

>> No.9821818

>>9821813
If it makes you feel better, they're all going to have to buy something from Baby to get in. The Tekko tea party is a weird mix of the comm, a few new lolitas, and a whole bunch of randoms.

>> No.9821824

>>9821818
Right, of course they’ll have to, but the fact that they’re acting like it’s such a huge inconvenience is irritating as fuck. Just don’t go if you don’t care about the brand lol

>> No.9821829

>>9821014
There is a new 18+ panel room. Might be worth checking out. The group that did the dildo racing panel at sangawa is doing it in that room at tekko.

>> No.9821833

I'm kind of amazed people would spend 50 dollars for a tea party if they didn't know what it was about.

>> No.9821834

>>9821833
And then get shitty when a brand is hosting the tea and wearing an item of theirs is required. People are acting so shocked by it. A brand hosts the tea every year, it’s no surprise. Learn to fucking read before you buy a ticket.

>> No.9821933

>>9821824
Hopefully some of them will sell their tickets. It is weird that they act like it's just a fancy event, when it's billed as a lolita tea. Honestly, I'd rather there not be looky loos, but that's probably a head ache the organizers don't have time to deal with.

>> No.9821946

It's ok, we had a family with daughters and a mother show up as itas because they didn't realize it was NOT a costume party. They seemed enthusiastic but were turned away at the door.

Another year, one con was lax about the if ur not in lolita gtfo and some chick got into an AP tea party with like a miniskirt and her butt hanging out? Luckily, a girl just pulled out one of her many pettis and asked the offender to just put it on...

Whoever said there's nothing to do must be very boring, or those people who think there needs to be more dub voice actors for some reason. This is going to be my eighth year going, and unless there was magically more to do nine years ago, I've only ever seen an increase. There's definitely legitimate complaints about Tekko, but "nothing to do" seems the exact opposite of how it is. Sometimes it seems there's too much to do.

For some specifics, I personally like the Japanese arcade games, shopping, and going to Charles Dunbar's panels especially (he's an anthropologist and a very entertaining speaker). There's a lot of different options depending on what you're into.

There is a new security head this year though, and it seems like a lot of old security people are working elsewhere, so maybe it'll be different. I don't know how the new guy is gonna handle things, but he has big shoes to fill.

TL;DR - Don't drink openly, and don't drink so much that it's obvious you've been drinking. If you aren't a problem to yourself or others, you should be fine.

Here's a list of places someone posted in last year's Tekko thread:

The DLCC is in the cultural district and right next to the strip so there's a load of stuff to eat if you don't mind walking a few blocks. Stuff in the strip is only open during the day, but you can find loads of ethnic stuff there among other things. Pittsburgh also has an enormous Chinese population so there's a fuckton of great asian food if you're willing to drive/uber a bit (recommend Chengdu Gourmet or Teppanyaki Kyoto personally, those places are incredible)

There are these within walking distance of the convention center:

Butcher and the Rye $$$ (best for drinking)
Proper Brick Oven (italian/pizza) $$
Tako (korean mexican fusion) $$
Meat and Potatoes $$$ (call ahead, celebrities come here. Very busy)
Sushi Kim (korean) $$$ (get korean not the sushi.)
Little Bangkok (Thai) $$ (imo best Thai in Pittsburgh)
The Oyster House (sea food and fries) $
Subbas (nepalese) $ (a bit far, across the river and looks like a hole in the wall but amazing food! Get the chicken Momo)
Joe and Pie (pizza/russian?) $ (some of the food is expensive)

Avoid Nicky's Thai kitchen!! Over priced and last time I went the tofu was rotten

If you want fast food there's a Burger King near by on the corner of Smithfield and Seventh. For more walk down Penn toward 9th street. Turn left onto Stanwix then another left onto Forbes Ave. Its about a 15 minute walk. Youll be in Market Square which has a Noodles and Comp., Moes, Chipotle etc. If you get lost just ask for directions to Market Square, most people either know where it is or will be heading that way.

First time I have been back to tekko in a while (last time was 2007) and it seems to have changed for the worse. Show and character discussions have pretty much been replaced with cringe and sjw style panels. The halls and panels were pretty bad at times with the smell, but the worst was the video game hall. It literally smelled like shit. Vendors suck dick, didn't buy anything, any big ticket items you can find on amazon for a quarter to half cheaper. I remember before that there were people selling real knives and stuff that wasn't just decorative junk. People are just passed out everywhere, the amv room became a nap room where people are lounging out with blankets. Speaking of which AMVs seemed to have died since 07. I remember back then those rooms being filled. Either way I tapped out, the late night panels didn't look all that great. The other panels I had been to were usually derailed with SJW banter. One was derailed for 20 mins while someone kept yelling about Ann Coulter. Others were things that were supposed to explain things like writing, but instead just became a showcase for the guys cringy OC and plugging his Hentai Foundry account. I was on my own and participated in most everything I could, but damn it gets hard after hours of trying to make the best of it.

The reeeee shit hasn't been used in a while without being ironic as well, and nice reddit spacing.
Hell back before the fashion there would be over two dozen voice actors and people of the industry at the con and two bands. And that was back when there was even less people at the con around 2k people. Now there are recorded between 5-8k over the past few cons and the guest list has gotten smaller each year.
If you enjoy fashion it's fine, I doubt it's going anywhere. If you want to spend time green text reeeeing my posts and saying I'm the immature one then thats fine as well. However I still don't like the fashion show and think it's better to pander to the large crowd rather than bakers dozen I saw around a stage.

You're the only one triggered here. But I don't think I said anything about the musical guests. Music has been a part of tekko for a long time. I have been going to tekko since it's 2nd run that was in cranberry twp before it even got big, and have been here since 05. Either way I guess if just not liking something is a hissy fit, then you are throwing a huge one. The con used to have more special guests, it used to be cheaper, and there used to be far less people. Now its More people, more money, less industry guests, and we get fashion shows that very small group of people take part in. The reason why is that the fashion group can't just come on their own, they have a whole entourage that has to come with them which costs money. So then we have to sacrifice 9 people who could just get on a plane and come here on their own. Because the model will need stylists, agents, and makeup artists. Every fashion idol is an extra 3-5 behind the scenes people who tekko also has to pay for their ticket and hotel. I could at least justify the bands because a large majority of the con enjoy them and it usually fills up the room. Fashion show is a little over 20 people.

>> No.9846478

>>9846430
I remember paying $30 and we had a lot of industry guests. It went up to $40 when we did bands but the venues got bigger which was great. If you were around for the days at places like the days at the Radisson then you would know all the people just crammed into halls. The smell was horrible so the price jump was worth not being that cramped and we got bands out of it to boot. Now we have the same huge venue. Lots more people, even more money from all those extra heads. Except less content. $50 isn't a bad price; inflation is a thing and airlines and hotels aren't set in stone, but now we get a quarter of the content we had years past, but pay more for it. Back when it was Tekkoshocon it was billed as an anime convention. Now it doesn't even have anime listed on it's about page. It just billed as a Japanese Pop Culture convention. That feels like to me that they are trying to bury the lead.Tekko even dropped the tekkoshocon making it sound less like an anime con, and removed the mention of anime from the footer. You could ask anyone who hasn't been to tekko what it is and they probably won't know it's an anime con. Even the newspaper says it's just for people interested in J-pop and J-fashion However if you asked anyone what Anime central, Anime north, Anime expo, A-Kon, Anime Boston, Anime Matsuri, etc are I'm sure even people who aren't into anime will take a wild guess that they are anime cons.

>> No.9846486

>>9846478
Dude, I get what you're saying, as I think a lot of anime cons have WAY too much non-anime things (Western fandoms taking over, for instance), but most of the panels *are* about anime, and there's only a handful of j-fash tracks. If it were a fashion con, there'd be more panels about fashion and more booths, too. The Baby booth is quite small.

>>9846417
>Because the model will need stylists, agents, and makeup artists. Every fashion idol is an extra 3-5 behind the scenes people who tekko also has to pay for their ticket and hotel
Are you sure that the price is going up because of the fashion guests? As far as I know, it's recommended that the girls bring their own wigs and things to be styled, so they're cutting costs that way. You also apply to be a stylist, so you aren't coming with the brands. It's just local congoers and lolitas or whatever. Volunteers. They get a free badge but not a hotel.

>> No.9846556

>>9846486
I don't have Tekko's full expenditure list, so most of my ramblings are just on assumption and what I see. I'm not saying that it is a fashion con, just that it could be leaning that way due to the PR and media representation. I did see that the idols did have an entourage, but I didn't bother to ask for their business cards. As for Hotel I have heard mixed statements over the years as to who gets a paid hotel or flight. I spoke with Tiffany Grant about it and she said that usually it's one or the other, rare times it's both but it does happen. Then in I think 06 Caitlin Glass was in a room party and got obliterated. She was puking and had to be carried to her room. She couldn't recover in time for the panel and the room was filled so they just had Vic come out and tell stories of pranks and junk that voice actors will pull on each other. However one of the staff were nearly in tears over this and were yelling how she will pay them back for the hotel and flight and would never be allowed back. Then again she did come back in 14 8 years later, so I guess they forgave her or the staff I overheard were being overly emotional.

The volunteers who are local and just get a badge are usually more assistant roles, hold this, fetch that, etc.

Walking into the room she was to the left, at one of the tables on the door side of the room, not the window side. I don't remember her outfit but it was a dumpy offbrand JSK in red maybe? She made some comments about the winner having spent a lot of money and how they don't need a free outfit or something. I mean, it was a best dressed contest, not a charity drive for broke ass itas.

Can someone explain to me why certain lolitas love to travel around the US to cons for fashion shows and teas? Maybe this is a topic for its own thread.

>How do they get so much time off work?
>Is it really that much fun?
>Is it for e-fame? Do they think it will lead to a career?

I read M.A.'s public FB's posts about Tekko and she acts like she was a part of something GREAT, like she helped organize the convention or something. I find it a bit odd.

>> No.9847639

Some people don't work retail and get weekends off + vacation time and use it to tack on a day to their weekend to go to a con. Or they work from home.

>> No.9847674

>>9847648
Lol I am older than 18. Why are so salty to my questions?

I have a career. I don't get more than two weeks off in a year. Maybe my PTO is just poor. Working from home doesn't mean you can do whatever you want, though. Maybe you mean owning your own business?

I'm just thinking about travel time, and how most lots of cons are now Thurs-Sun. Even if you're going to a new con every month, that a lot of time off work (24 days in a year, depending on when you fly in and out).

Just a thought.

>> No.9847730

I've been at my job almost 5 years and they're really big on work life balance. The owners of my company know I'm into Lolita and that I go to conventions frequently. They don't give a shit if I miss work so long as my work is done or covered by someone in my absence. I get about a month and a half of PTO but if I don't wanna use it, I'll just work a lot of extra hours during the week or two leading up to it.

Different anon but sometimes I will fly out right after my work day is finished on Thursday and I just take an unpaid day for Friday.
I don’t think those of us that travel often for cons are in financial situations where an unpaid day will cripple us, so it’s really not unreasonable to be able to travel often.

I’m not a lolita but I am in jfashion and being able to travel for my interests and meet new comms is more than worth it to me.

>> No.9847826

I mean it's not impossible. You get points to fly cheap or free. If you work M-F with every weekend off you could do a lot of cons. Neither of them are hurting anybody .

Slap on an expensive baby dress with zero actual coordination skills (shoes made her look dumpy, hair was silly and verging on clownish) and you've got a winner.
Just shows that money can't buy taste but it can buy you a winning spot at a tea party.

>> No.9847992

So... the dress code for the tea was not enforced. There were two people at our table with nothing from baby and two girls at the table behind mine were talking about not wasting time on buying or wearing lolita just for a Sunday tea. The girl at my table said her dress was shipping cuz she JUST ordered it, so she wore this sundress... ... and she didn't interact with any designers or guest... tea was good though

>> No.9848004

Saw some girls get kicked out at the beginning for not understanding the rules lol but then they showed up much later again with shitty dressees on and a single Btssb bow pinned to their fronts. And then one of them won something in the raffle. The goddamn shithead.

Food was alright but a little light. Not enough tea most of the time though. I thought everyone was pretty amazingly dressed and the girl who won the coord contest looked great imo. The guests were nice and fun to talk with and there were some nice things set up for photos. We also each got a photobook gift from Btssb which was really sweet. Overall I had a very pleasant experience personally.

The con had to compete with bigger and more prestigious cons like C2E2 & Fan Expo Dallas which took up a lot of the big name VAs, plus Anime Detour in Minneapolis and a con in Dubai... Right, but you don't have to be important. Like >>9848861 and >>9848772 said, she also likes to have people indebted to her or fawn over her. She likes attention, to get down to the basics of it.

I don't know, anon. I don't doubt that she is nice to you, but I don't doubt that she isn't doing it without some sort of ulterior motive even if it's as simple as just trying to get you to like her so you're on her side to speak. This is how people like this operate. Be nice to some people, so when you do something wrong, you've got people to defend you. You're already kinda doing it now, whether you mean to or not. All I'm saying is, when dealing with her, keep one eye open.

This. She exhibits very sociopathic behavior- I've seen the not so nice side of her, and people like her are very good at hiding the garbage side of their personality. Please proceed with caution when interacting with her, because like >>9849053 said, she always has ulterior motives.
