Hey Gulls! I'll be moving to Vancouver soon and am trying to get my bearings on the area as a whole. What are the cool things to do and see (anime and geek related, but also in general, assuming that's allowed in here)? Any recommendations for hangout spots, shops, events, social gatherings, etc?

I'm hoping to check out Anime Revolution in August. Does anyone have any stories about that con?

Sorry to start the thread out with a ton of questions! I guess I'm just a little nervous about the move. It seems like all of the really awesome stuff is over in Toronto, so I've been a little worried about finding things to do on the west coast!

Feel free to discuss other Canada stuff in here as well, obviously. This thread isn't specifically meant to be about Vancouver alone.

Not into anime so I can't help you out there but I recommend going to Langley to check out toy traders. It's the largest independent toy and collecting store in Canada and they got a bunch of cool shit there (they have some anime stuff there but not a whole lot). There really isn't all that much to do in Vancouver that isn't really touristy like going to Stanley park or Science world. Vancouver is only good for filming imo.

You MUST check out the night market in Richmond. It's weeb central. There's a store in Coquitlam called Mostly Music that sells old video game shit and trading cards. Hangout spots are generally bubble tea places that are on almost every corner.

Unfortunately, all of the cons in Van suck. AniRevo isn't too bad but they charge the same price for a weekend pass that Otakuthon or Anime North charge for 1/3 the crowd. Most cosplayers that go there just stay outside. Same for the other cons. Most cosplayers that are super into the hobby save up and go to the cons in Seattle or LA.

The community can be really welcoming and the photogs there do not have the attitude of the ones in Toronto, everyone is super chill. But avoid the idol groups, they're just a clusterfuck of drama.

>> No.9804427

To echo about AR, it's okay to check out one day, especially if it has events/guests that you want to check out. It is really overpriced due to the venue they picked, and most people ghost outside in cosplay. I learned from an acquaintance that they upped the "badge security" with hand stamps so less likely for badge trading between friends. So if you gotta check out AR, I recommend a day like Saturday.

All the other cons kind of suck these days, you're better off saving up and checking out Sakura Con in Seattle or something.

Other casual events I recommend you checking out around Vancouver/transit accessible are:

- Sakura Days at Van Dusen in April, very pretty garden and fun events. Pay to get in.

- MiniComi Art Market is like a 1-day artist alley, this year they will be at the Pipe Shop in north van (just a seabus and quick walk away from Waterfront station). Free to attend.

- SFU Summer Festival is a 1-day "matsuri" event of games to earn tickets for the raffle prizes, and plenty of AA artists to check out, plus vendors and foods. Also they do small events on the stage, like hitting the watermelon while blindfolded and yukata contest. Free to attend, pay small single fee to play games to earn raffles.

If you're into trading card games or whatever, check out local shops that do game days or something.

About time that someone got another Canada thread going.
Went to Ai-Kon Winterfest a week ago, it was pretty nice. Didn't bother staying the whole 13 hours since things were starting to thin out after the marketplace closed down at 8 and I wasn't gonna bother waiting an hour for the afterparty dance to be set up. Otherwise I found it enjoyable.
Go Manisnowba.

Almost seems like fate this thread returned ahead of this weekend's return of Kitchener Comiccon.

Some may recall the debacle that unfolded in real-time here a while back where event organizer Ron Hoppe said an awful thing to a young woman and then his buddy whiteknights posting a fake legal threat.

Apparently last year had some questionable stuff happen to, https://www.reddit.com/r/kitchener/comments/74kx51/i_plan_to_attend_the_zombie_walk_on_oct_14_where/

I can only wonder what's next.

That's why I dislike AR claiming in the past to be "best anime con in Canada" in the past on their website - it really isn't compared to all the other long running, better cons in Canada. Thankfully they changed their wording but now.

Either way, I don't know if it has to do with venue settings and prices, and too many event organizers butting heads. It's too bad really.

To add to this, (not sure how soon you’d be here but) Harumatsuri is coming up on March 17th and AE also happens sometime between June and July. They sometimes can’t draw the same crowd as the bigger events but can be fun to hangout at nonetheless, and are usually cheaper.

I would also suggest once you get here to try joining some Facebook groups like Vancouver Cosplay Exchange and Cosplay Connect for updates on events and just to get to know some people in the community by buying/selling or finding photogs to meet up with or seeing what local cosplayers to check out.

Yeah I figured I'd check it out Saturday and was honestly really disappointed, despite having like no expectations going in. They definitely tried to hype up/draw in cosplay stuff without actually putting in any time or effort whatsoever. In past years they had an actual cosplay competition with about $500 in prizes so it was a nasty shock to a lot of the cosplay guests who were led into thinking they were being asked to be a judge/MC/guest of honour just to find out on the day of that the entire "cosplay area" was a single tiny carpet in the middle of the con floor only seperated from the chaos by one table and a couple of beanbag chairs, and that the masq didnt actually exist.
You'd think with them spending like 30k in prizes for the tournaments they couldve definitely afforded an actual stage/room and/or more than a single kigurumi as prize for the cosplay stuff considering how much they tried to hype it up. All the cosplay "guests" they misled and invited couldnt even fit in the area at the same time by themselves, let alone with all the congoers there too.
The entire crafting challenge/game show they tried to replace the masq with, of 5 teams + hosts, judges and gawkers, had to take place on that same tiny carpet with no decent barriers and half of what they gave them as materials was just like leftover packing cardboard from setup and stuff they bought from the dollar store the day before. All the other things happening there that day had to rely on the hosts yelling at the top of their voice and still not being heard above the con noise; my throat hurt just looking at them.

I think there was one hour long event that was fun to watch but even that was hung up by technical difficulties and had to resort to the guests using their personal cellphones for part if it when the con couldnt/wouldnt accomodate.

(Also lmao at that "VR Section" they had marked off with exactly one VR booth and a fucking army recruitment area taking up the rest)

That being said, I did feel sorry for the cosplayers being made to do a warmed over version of AN's lame-o mechayard wars. All the while being gawked at by normies looking for peeks at T&A. There were a lot of good costumes around. And the couple of panels I did check out where down the hall in quiet rooms so I'm not sure where the curtained one would have been. as for cons seconding sakuradays for photoshoots etc, and probably AR in the summer is van’s only decent sized con

also seconding staying away from the idol scene, tons of drama amongst the groups, especially the LL ones.

I do think there's a few people who just wanted to witch hunt the guy, and I don't approve of this. Like to people who equate him to a sexual predator or assaulter. When there have been ACTUAL predators out there. Unless there's some specific incident I don't know about, at worst, Marco is simply a completely creepy annoying fuck with no social skills. Which isn't good either, mind you, but definitely not as bad as the alternative.

The point DOES stand that Marco has been a thorn in many people's side, especially considering the reactions to Shelle's post.
Sadly, even with all of this, he's never gonna change. I mean, the screencaps were old yes, but they were from three fucking years ago. And he's still been causing trouble all this time? Maybe not to Shelle, but definitely to others if people have been opening up about this. Even if something like this should be eye opening for him and his sister. When he messes up again, and I say when since he will mess up again, unless he completely and genuinely changes his mindset from

So are we thinking the whiteknighting is done by Marco's sister or Marco himself?

>> No.9830165

>>9830158
I doubt it. Marco isn't that clever and his sister from what I understand hates 4chan.

Realistically, a lot of people don't like Shelle's source so I can see why they calling out Shelle doing an unwise thing and listening to him.

While I do think that we did at least get some good outcomes like Marco's sister seeing what is really going on and is trying to work with him on improving, it doesn't excuse Shelle for spreading what is likely misinformation that led to even more misinformation from people who simply may have wanted a witchhunt than a warning or Marco improving.

I feel you for locations outside of Vancouver. But I'm not sure Cloverdale would be a great place. The other year, idk if they continued it. They started doing the "Surrey Nightmarket " there and I heard it was terrible.

I grew up in Cloverdale and recently moved away. I feel like Cloverdale has unfortunately gone down hill in recent years. Which sucks because it was like... the one not shit part of Surrey.

Langley might be OK because they often hold other types of community events that are popular. Such as the car show .

how is it misinformation when there is proof? Even if it was years ago, he still broke their promise not to talk shit about each other. It shouldn't matter when she found out that his breaking of his promise happened how how long ago.

>> No.9830498

>>9830485
um this was from 2015. Shelle has made it seem as if it took place just recently which is why she went ahead and did this. Also how do we not know that is BEFORE they even set up that deal? cause they obviously must have had some drama before they set up such a deal.

Eitherways, her source may have only showed those 2 screenshots without the date to her as that is all she posted and therefore may have thought that they were recent. As some above have stated too, her source is apparently a very unreliable source too.

>> No.9830502

to further add to this, Shelle would have to be very petty to hold something from way back in 2015 against Marco like that.

imo... a deal is a deal. They said they wouldn't talk about each other and he broke that. If their drama was from a while ago and the post was from a while ago, this means he broke the promise very soon after it was made. I don't think that is pety. And he knew what he was doing, because he asked the source not to say anything because he knew he was in the wrong. So her finding out that he broke that promise probably pissed her off. Yah, she probably jumped the gun without timestamp evidence, but in the end what this all yielded was good.

>> No.9830605

>>9830584
but we don't even know if that post was from before the deal was even made or not. Of course, Marco has done wrong, but the whole point is that a thing from 2015 is stirring things up quite badly now of something that may or may not have been during the deal in the first place. The source may have simply wanted a witch hunt against Marco rather than to warn the community.

>> No.9830628

Honestly, he's a creeper. Who cares if there is a supposed "witch hunt" against him. Many people have been informed of his way and know to look out for it now. His caregiver is more aware of what he has been doing and is taking steps towards fixing the damage he has done because of the status. I dont care if the original source was off by a few years, this all needed to come out and im glad Shelle had the guts to get the ball rolling.

All of this! Im also glad that this got brought into the light. He was flying under the radar for way too long with his 'nice guy with austism' argument. Shelle is the fist person who has publicly made him accountable for his shitty actions, and is the only one who i have seen so far be able to get his sister/crush/caregiver (yah he has a fetish for his sister) to see what he is actually doing in the community so she can get him to stop.

But... couldn't it have been both? Yes, a witch hunt might just basically be a personal vendetta, but it ALSO helped the community be more aware of how awful he is. He should be judged for what he has done, yes, but that happens to be a lot if there's this many people talking about him.

The guy's a creep and a "nice guy" and those kinds of people make me sick. He deserves critique and everyone deserves to be aware of him to steer clear.

This coupled with the post that Roger made, I can tell he learned nothing from all of this. Oh well, at least people know to go to his sister now with their problems because he's "not mentally well enough" (which i think is bullshit, he knows exactly what he is doing, he just doesnt want to grow up) to deal with them himself properly.

I just think its weird that a 35-40 something year old (he looks like late 30's to me) who is functioning enough to go to conventions by himself is using the mental disability card so often. Maybe if he stopped watching kids cartoons and got his head out of his ass, he would actually be able to start working towards being a functioning non creepy member of society.

Marco, I know you're reading all of these comments. Please grow the fuck up. Maybe watch some tutorials on how to communicate with people. Or just shows that aren't about the socially awkward being accepted. Because that message is good, but in moderation and you sir are using none of it. You just expect people to accept you for who you are and if they don't, then thats their fault. No need for you to change, then, huh? It's their problem, not yours? Well guess what, when it happens constantly and you only have two people who will stand up for you, YOU are the problem. it's YOUR fault that you make people uncomfortable. Not your autism. Stop blaming others and your mental disability for your fuck ups. Because that's what you are at this point, a major fuckup.

I'd be disappointed if I was his parents.

>> No.9832313

>35-40 something year old

He's definitely not that old, I think he's in his 20s. If he was older and still acting like this, that'd be even worse. I also don't think watching cartoons in and of itself is a bad thing (since they're just pieces of media like any other), though he's certainly not helping the perception that like, fans of western media (particularly cartoons) are autistic manchildren.

But yeah, I'm afraid he's just never gonna change. That "thank you for your insight" comment is the most in one ear out the other kinda thing and that REALLY pisses me off.
Just fucking watch, he's gonna make someone uncomfortable again, blame them and not himself and not look inward at all, and we're back to square fucking one. I think at the very least, everyone who does know him can willingly tell him to fuck off to his face, but I still fear for the people who don't know about him or still believe he's innocent.

>> No.9832454

>>9832362
Come off it, you know that won't work. And that's just gonna make him more upset, throw more of a fit, and potentially act even worse. He also hasn't really sexually assaulted someone as far as I know (at least I fucking hope not) so there wouldn't be any basis or grounds to ban him from stuff.

And let's make it clear, I don't like the guy either. But there's a few reasons why this wouldn't work.
>1: Roger wouldn't ban him from CHG, he's clearly on his side
>2: cons probably wouldn't ban him either, especially since there's nothing explicit against him, while bigger cons like AN or Fan Expo wouldn't give a shit
>3: he'll just get even more upset and act even worse, and no one fucking wants that

Really, if he wants to better himself, he's gotta keep his distance from the people he knows he's wronged. And if that means taking a break, all the better. But he's gonna keep coming to these things regardless. In which case, it's gotta be made clear that no one will put up with his shit. And for the less outspoken people in the community, well, that's who we have to look out for so he doesn't bother them.

>> No.9832514

>>9832362
That's... a little overblown. The guy hasn't done anything criminal or directly aggressive. He's just annoying and weird. Making people uncomfortable is not tantamount to harassment or abuse, and banning him would be the community turning around and ganging up on him, which IS a form of bullying.

He preys on girls he thinks are too awkward to stick up for themselves. He fucked up hard when he tried that shit with Shelle.

I'm not his sister anon, but advocating for violence is pretty messed up. Marco's not some nazi fuck whose philosophical existence is dedicated to the harm and extermination of other groups of people. He's just some dickheaded manchild who makes excuses for his shitty behavior, and I think we all know someone like that.

The fact that there's an anon or two out for blood here is weird and vindictive, and harming someone based on any of this would constitute being a worse person than Marco.

Call the kid out and report him or w/e but don't fucking hurt him. You can't moralfag about him being an abusive or hurttful person and then also talk about harming him. That just makes you the same kind of person.

They don't even have P4A this year and its the only fighter I'm good at.

I saw people playing P4A yesterday, anon. They have it, you probably just need to ask for it.

But yeah the Overwatch focus is pretty obnoxious.

I'd say it beats 2/3rds of the room being smash, but they're both pretty bad

Lines to meet Matt Mercer were a disaster today. The con staff are going to be getting a lot of complaints about how poorly they handled the ticketing process. People who were here 1.5 hours early didn't get in.

At least with Smash the tournaments took up one TV.

With Overwatch, say goodbye to literally half the PCs in the entire room, as well as half the floorspace.

No but you have now made it weird so you should probably stay home.

Alright so, the thing opened up with a fucking god awful Love Live dance group (which ended up winning the goddamn special honor prize).

But the thing really went to shit when the second act comes up.

An obese man in a Gardevoir bodysuit gets up on stage, and begins to dance with an umbrella for an excruciatingly long time.

The third act was fucking amazing and so well-coordinated, and it was followed by almost literally nothing but more god damn Love Live, all performed by awful dancers in badly fitting clothing, and a dance by an Ahri cosplayer with no ears or tail as part of her costume.

The only other standouts were a song by a Revali with a really good voice, and some fucking shirtless buff dudes dancing to a Gucci Gang mashup, if only because it was some vague approximation of entertaining

Besides a couple though holy shit was it excruciating.

My eyes have bled once before from smashing into a door frame, and watching this was the closest I have ever come to replicating that feeling

lol what? that sounds awesome!
maybe if more cons did stuff like this more people would actually use the game room. most people check it out for 5 minutes and move on. they're often full of basically joke games like duck hunt and stuff.
or worse, people show up and realize you need your own controller for the games they actually like (such as smash) and there's none to share so they just leave even before the 5 minutes are up.
for too many people the game room is like an "all or nothing" thing. either you're initiated and really into the game room and spend a lot of time there or you just never visit it.
everyone who owns p4a can host a gaming sesh with their buds. something like overwatch requires going to a dedicated lan cafe or something to actually play irl with your friends.
additionally fighting games generally have their own scene of events such as weeklies or their own tournaments... do you know how frustrating it is to actually meetup with that friend you barely see and head down to play a quick round of smash only to find that all the setups except for 1 are being reserved for this totally lame, relic of last decade tourney? it's pretty bad. or it's a con that has panels running past midnight and raves/dances until super late but the game room closes at like 9pm? whaat?

They had a couple of retro arcade cabinets which would have been fucking great for some drop-in-and-play sessions between panels or whatever, except there were only like five of them so they were crowded up any time I stopped by.

Every time I wandered in the Tetris cabinet was taken over by Asian youngsters and damn if I wanted to be humiliated by 10 year olds so I couldn't try it.

They even switched off Puyo Puyo Tetris for another fighting game which saddened me.

It's really starting to bug me, because it's not really meant as a local game. I miss neato local games like Mario Party or Catherine

Went to panel sign-ins and was talking to the rep when a sweaty, fat guy awkwardly stumbles over and interupts us to ask about Maid Cafe tickets.

I'd feel bad for the maids, but they should know what they're getting themselves into.

Here anons, I'll write you a better recap.

The first act was a Love Live cover group, but they covered a J-Rock (?) song. I'll admit it was pretty bad, but the song was good. They won the Special Honor prize (Is that even what its called? shrug)

Second act was Gardevoir. They did a traditional style dance with an umbrella. A little boring but they danced well.

Third act was a trio group, they covered Garnidelias Tougen Renka. Pretty good, wasn't that impressed but they did win Best In Show.

Fourth was the Gucci Gang mash up. Clearly these guys were good dancers but their sync wasn't great. They won Fan Favourite.

Fifth was a solo performance, she did a mash up of Garnidelias latest songs. She won a Judges Choice award.

Sixth was an 8 member Idol cover group. They did a mash up of multiple Idol songs. They also won a Judges choice.

I don't remember the order after this, but the rest of the contestants.. (I hope the rest? sorry.)

Vocaloid duo. One was really good, the other.. Not great. Don't remember the song.

Another trio, danced to Garnidelia Hysteric Bullet. Started out extremely strong but lost their stamina by the end (forgetting moves, sloppy, etc.)

Solo Garnidelia (Hysteric Bullet again). Pretty bad. Good personality but didn't know the dance at all. They ended up winning judges choice (despite not even knowing the choreography??).

Revali cosplayer sung a song (don't remember what though.)

If I'm missing anyone somebody please fill in for me. The contest wasn't bad at all, the only thing that bothered me was the repeated songs. Out of only 10-13 acts four were Garnidelia.

It was fan-fucking-tastic from every band on the bill. Expect a lot of crowd surfing. Be ready to hand a beer to the yubisaki drummer when she says "please beer" and cheer her chugging it. When bakuyn calls out Doskoi, yell Bacchkoi in reply. Buy some merch/CDs if you can. They're all happy to sign it and say hello at the merch tables. There's some videos already up on twitter and facebook.

Just wanted to say thanks anon. Your post gave me the final push I needed to go to the show. It was so fucking good, I'll definitely be going to the October show. I ended up buying a Lucie, Too shirt plus their CD but I was too much of a beta bitch to ask them to sign. I could write more but I'll leave it at that
