>Is old school making a comeback?
It has been for a while now I think. On the one hand I'm happy about it, on the other hand it makes me sad to see new girls going on about old school like it's a costume with very rigid definitions that they need to tick off a list to achieve the look, instead of researching old coords to understand what made them what they are.
I wish people would actually take this opportunity to really express themselves rather than hop on a trend, is what I'm trying to say.

People are trying to do oldschool lolita with the current lolita mentality. The two concepts just don’t work together.

That's exactly it. I'm hopeful though, maybe some of these girls will enjoy old school enough to try to really understand it and wear it to express themselves, long after it's no longer the cool thing to do. It's so gorgeous when pulled off correctly, and to answer the OP again,
>Who are your favourite "modern" old school lolitas?
Probably a predictable answer and for good reason, I love Ophelia's style. I'd never be able to imitate what she does but she's still a major source of inspiration for me, barring actual old school street snaps.

How do you gulls feel about old school styling with pieces that are very obviously modern? I really love the look of less floof, chunky black shoes, visible bloomers, and the general vibe of old school, but I don't really like the actual pieces much. I feel like if I take my very contemporary looking pieces (I like elaborate prints and chiffon) and style them more old school people are just going to call me ita.

I love Sable, her coords are always creative and have that authentic old school gothic feel

>>9796469
If you don't call it old school, then I don't see the problem. It's only when people start trying to call coords using modern main pieces old school, it falls flat.

I'd never call it proper old school, absolutely. I don't have the kind of dedication it takes to pull off old school. (Also I just really really like chiffon.) Would calling it old school-inspired be an issue, so maybe people will see what I'm going for?

look at the example down below, anon. It's actually so easy to do a proper oldschool coord. So many people mess it up because they try too hard! All you need is an older, simple piece with simple accessories that match it. I'd say the biggest mistake people make with oldschool is they rely too much on "frills." Choose a simple blouse. Tend toward cotton lace or at least non-raschel and not too MUCH of it. And definitely, definitely get a "chunkier" shoe, don't just rely on tea parties.

>> No.9796625

>>9796613
Holy run on sentence batman. 28" is really not that big, even for old school. JSKs are likely to fit you fine, OPs will depend on your entire frame (shoulder width, ribcage). Skirts are the only oldschool main piece that will be a 26" waist with any regularity. Even then Meta has been making generously shirred skirts since the dark ages so there are old skirts that'll fit you.

Really since you're tall I'd be more concerned about length since old school can run damn short.

>Do you own anything by them? Nope. But I keep looking once week a second hand brand shop incase something comes up.
>Why do you think they didn't stand the pass of time?
There are many reasons. They didn’t keep up with times. I mean in a way that, lolita fashion evolves troughout the years and they kept doing the same thing instead of changing the formula. Also lack of overseas customer oriented websites (and sizing), when their Japanese customer base wasn’t as profitable in business sense. Or that they weren’t interested in their fashion line anymore. Also the competition is now bigger with indie brands coming along, making lolita fashion accessible to everyone more than ever before. Also the business profits when a customer buys a product first hand. When someone buys an item second hand, the business doesn’t profit from this because the item wasn’t bought from them, but from another seller.

I'm incredibly intrigued by them and would love to experience their work.

>Do you own anything by them?
Do Beth, Millefleurs, and Ozz On count? Only one of those is closed, but they other two don't have a large overseas presence.

>Why do you think they didn't stand the pass of time?
I think that some of them still exist, but are dying due to lack of outreach. I think that almost happened to AtePi but they've really reinvented themselves and reached out to the Western Market. I think Physical Drop (which is new but I see as the modern equivalent of one of those old school indie brands) will succeed because the creator is crazy dedicated and makes a huge effort to be accessible and to interact with her fans. Basically, if there's no hype, things don't get bought and brands die.

Can anyone identify this Meta skirt? Name or at least the year of it's release? I couldn't find anything on lolibrary and ive been a religous follower of Meta since I got into lolita in 2008 and I dont think I'd miss the release of something so beautiful, so it has to be something older then that. I love all of Meta's older stuff. I really wish I had gotten into lolita years before I did.

I find it really interesting that modern old school is so heavily reliant on black x white colorways. On one hand, I know it was a popular colorway for the period and it was very iconic, but on the other hand snaps and magazine from that time were not nearly this monochromatic. Do you think this is a trend that will stick around, or will other colorways become popular as more people get comfortable with the style?

If you have long hair, I'd add a few smaller bows, ie- ribbon combs or ribbon hair clips. Useful for twintails, ponytails and braids as alternative hairdos. There's also that one btssb rabbit-eared bonnet that a bunch of girls seemed to go crazy for back in the day, if that's your thing.

I'd also suggest adding a couple of OTKs, since most of these seem to be UTKs and one pair of tights. Not for the period-accuracy, just to have the choice to swap them out if you happen to get a skirt in that's a bit too short or doesn't seem to work with UTKs.

I don't think old school had a lot of lolita-specific jewellery happening, but a pair of wristcuffs to wear with the short-sleeeved stuff works better than bracelets, and if you don't already have them, the blouses that have open necklines could do with some lace chokers.

I like the headdress and rose motifs but I have had that same one and I had to give it away because it matched nothing but it's not distracting here. Exactly the same way you'd make any style your own: Add your own twist on things; pick a motif or color or theme or something, anything, that you like and add it to your coord to change it a bit; wear things you think are cute in theory, maybe it'll look like shit in practice but don't be afraid to try and make mistakes; think of an idea or feeling or "atmosphere" that you want your coord to have and aim for that.
It's a bit too complex to explain in words but it boils down to wearing things that you like, to express yourself. It's okay to take inspiration from old street snaps but don't feel like you have to stick by them to make your coord genuine. Imo you'll look more genuine if you try to express yourself rather than follow specific patterns or "rules".

I've been following her for a while and recognized her mercari name. She constantly asks for payment plans and reductions on already cheap items in the comments and has a habit of butting in the sales talk of other buyers, then offering to pay more if the seller reserves it for her until the end of the month or another period of time and asking the seller to delete her comments once everything is done. She bought big brand packages and other cheap things on yahoo auctions and then resold them for 3x - 5x.
Brands and shops don't support her, the "museum" is completely crowd funded. Somebody wrote a comment under her project page saying they'd love to donate but they'd like to know how exactly the money is used. She answered she'll state that in a later phase of the project but then deleted both comments a few days later. She also deletes her tweets quite often.

I agree about being picky, it did seem at times that her definition of oldschool is pretty narrow. However, she does disclaim that it's her subjective opinion and other opinions have the right to exist, so? It's not like she's saying everyone who thinks otherwise should go die or something.
I kind of agree with how she suggests making a distinction between modern "post-oldschool" which you can really take in any direction you like, and "true oldschool" which is emulating exactly how lolita was worn back in the old days, in which her method of studying old photos and doing it the way they did it seems completely justified.

I liked the video, even though I don't agree with some of the points made, you gotta admit her approach is working for her, seeing how even her coords she herself criticizes and says she wants to remake still look fucking bomb.

Ofc it's her subjective opinion and I have no issue with that, but given she's like, a pinnacle of the old school community right now I'm just wary of these rigid standards coming into play. I think the obvious loose rules (gold shoes are a no), and distinction between modern old school inspired lolita vs more authentic emulation are good, useful distinctions to learn, but things like "you would never see this many brooches in old school" are unnecessary distinctions to me as long as they don't detract from the overall feel of the coord. The old GLBs also sometimes play very fast and loose with the rules and lines between lolita and other subgenres fashion. They say in things like art and writing, "once you know the rules you can break them" as in, once you get a good feel for something, then you know when and where you can experiment, and I think that also applies here. IMO there are some coords that aren't 100% authentic that understand the vibe of old school a thousand times better than a coord made entirely of pre-2005 BTSSB items. I would rather see those and not have them cut in this weird distinction of "this isn't 100% authentic". I enjoy the old school community because it's not nearly as nitpicky as other places in my experience, and I don't want that to change, is all.

I've been into this fashion since 2004 and honestly it feels weird to have someone so young calling the shots on what details are or aren't possible in old school. While I do agree with a few points (gold shoes), I feel like the video could have been made in a much more constructive way instead of what feels like an unintentional roast. Ultimately Ophelia wasn't around harajuku in the naughties, she wasn't even online back then, she was a kid. She only knows so much from fruits, research and personal experience with the style which is what we have available now besides nostalgia. No one can really call the shots on what is or isn't proper old school to a T, we have a basic knowledge, photos, nostalgia, that's it. That's why I think these types of videos just don't work. Out of all photos and old sites and old dresses, the one thing you can't study is the style mentality of that time and space, which is lost forever because we live in 2018 not 2004.

I agree. Some strict rules are against the spirit of old school lolita. I’ve been in the fashion since 2006 and my country lived the old school era for a few more years (compared to other countries). If you look at fruits or very old snaps, it looks like people used to choose “randomly” what to wear. Yeah, they followed the basic rules (not always) but the style was more free. Plus, needing a proof from the past for every coord you create shows how Ophelia isn’t confident with the style at all (I’m talking about her last post on cof). That’s why I still refuse to see her as a muse for the old school style.

To add to both of this, just a few years back she was a raging pastel bodyline ita. I like her coords now, but i dont understand all the hype and its really bizzare shes trying to become an old school guru

I agree with everything said above but I honestly think she just tried to be helpful, since people do seem to ask her a lot of questions and treat her like some kind of guru.

I like almost every substyle of lolita but I get almost frantic about collecting old school pieces because I know we can never return to that/brands will not make things truly of that style ever again. Especially since some of those brands are done-zo and gone.

I kind of dig this idea that old school is basically historical dress.
In this light, I understand the commitment to accuracy. there's plenty room to be creative and experiment, as long as you're using what was available at that time. makes sense.
I remember that Misako video and her presentation of "traditional" style. it spoke to me because it's close to my first exposure to the fashion: a western gothic clothing site that was creating their own lolita pieces in 2005 with a dark, fairy tale, doll sort of foundation. Of course, I thought it was just a substyle of goth and had no idea it was its own named alt fashion in Japan.

This helps me going forward to differentiate my trad style from actually trying for a true old school coord.

If you really have been around that long, I'm genuinely a lot more curious about what you wear and how you feel "old-school" should look/feel than Ophelia. How can we bring an old school sensibility into our modern style? Is it enough to be less strict and planned about coords and be more casual and comfortable with how we dress if we wear lolita day to day? Or is it more about hunting down genuine pieces and coording them according to what we see in old pictures?

age has nothing to do with it, anon. she's clearly put the time and energy into the substyle. don't begrudge her of her knowledge.
I think she's very right to suggest looking to old snaps and brand catalogs for what pieces to wear. old school isn't just a style, it's very set in the time. you can't disregard that. I'd look to her about old school, the same way I'd look to gropealope about 17th & 18th century European fashion.
sure, she's clearly a purist, as am I about certain things I'm very passionate about, but I agree with the sentiment to say something isn't old school because of a few off elements.
just like saying a coord isn't pure gothic because of excessive bow accessories & the lace of a main piece has hearts all over it.

do what you like, but be prepared to hear someone give you crit if you post online.

I don't wear lolita anymore (found it around 2003-2004, quit 2012), But honestly.. just listening visual kei, watching older animes, looking photos of Mary Pickford makes me want to wear old school lolita again. So I think the media we surrounded ourselves with played big role in the 'vibe'. Idk why visual kei isn't mentioned more often, it was crazy popular back then. You don't really get to the old school mood by listening k-pop lol.

Can confirm, I draw a lot of inspiration for my personal style from visual kei.

I feel like Ophelia has a good understanding of what makes a good old school coord but she is clearly struggling to get her point accross. I wouldn't be any better in it and it's really hard to put into words but I feel like the video lacked a bit of general advicing and focused too much on nit picking few coords. I would rather hear general advising than crit of coords I would never wear. For example, she went pretty long about the striped socks, when it could have actually been an example of how small details affect on the look and the feel of the whole coordinate rather than a full topic.

I think she made good points though, like the term traditional lolita. But at the same time as someone who has not lived out the old school era it's a bit hard to jump right into the perfect old school mode. It would feel kinda bad to be judged wheter or not I'm enough old school when I think the main point is one is aiming for the look and trying to understand the whole mentality behind it. I already feel like an imposter sometimes allthough I just happen to like older things and styling in older coords.

The video would also benefit from her defining old school. Like what she views as old school. I have seen these threads have a wide range of opinions and some think old school ended as early as 2003 and most 2005-2006. There is a big difference between 2000 and 2005 in, for example, general frumpiness. I'm also often inspired by the advertisements which generally seem a lot neater.

However, I must say I enjoyed the video and got inspired by it. I think I got few good tips to use in my coords and it's always nice to view old school content.

Although true the coords were not great though. I am just getting tired of how popular oldschool is becoming and that people are obsessed with looking a certain way.
The whole idea of a video on how to look oldschool is crazy

>> No.9819913

What makes it crazy? The look has become popular and many people don't quite pull it off, I wouldn't be surprised if Ophelia got requests for a guide like this considering the fact many people love her style.
It's not a perfect guide but it's really not that big a deal.
>I am just getting tired of how popular oldschool is becoming
Imo if many people start wearing old school, I'd be happier to see them actually put an effort into understanding the aesthetic and pull it off, so while this guide isn't perfect, I'm glad it's being done.

>> No.9820590

I felt like I basically understood the video. Sometimes, as >>9819744 said, you just know something when you see it. When I think of the overall old school "aesthetic" it follows this rule like 95% of the time. I agree that she did have trouble articulating her points clearly, but youtube isn't easy. She just needs to do it more until she gets better. Watch old peachie or lor videos (the ones they haven't deleted) and you'll get the idea.

Jeez I wonder how people study ancient cultures, none of them were alive back then!
Claiming you can't "get" the fashion of a certain period because you were too young back then is the dumbest shit. Yeah, we obviously won't nail the mentality of Japanese teenagers from the 80s, but, like, what if we're not trying to? We just want to dress similarly, and there's enough of visual evidence, as well as interviews, articles, videos, etc. in free public access, so if you're willing to do the research (which O. obviously does, regardless of whether we agree with her conclusions or not), you can get a pretty decent understanding of that time period. Plus it's not that far in the past from our modern time, so you don't need to wrap your head around anything too foreign, like idk Ancient Rome.
I agree with many of the criticisms of the video in this thread, I also wish there was more focus on the discussion of the style itself and less on nitpicking 3 coords. But saying "the entire video doesn't work because she's too young to "get" oldschool" is really stupid and pretentious.

Calm your tits, troll-chan. Comments like this is why we can't have nice things. Whenever someone tries to make anything remotely useful, shits like you jump all over it bitching and complaining about every small thing. I'm not saying the video is perfect in every way because it's not, and she has stressed that it's just her own opinion, but you prefer to ignore those parts, don't you.
>just a few years back she was a raging pastel bodyline ita

>someone who has not lived out the old school era it's a bit hard to jump right into the perfect old school mode
Nobody in the west has lived it, certainly not her. Imo it's weird to copy the ''messy/not perfect mindset'' of old school. Those lolitas we see in street snaps did want to look perfect, though some people just made do with what they had. They knew where to be for the street snaps, so they didn't dress up ''just to hang out''. Some of them were in Tokyo in the first place to see a visual kei live, and Kera/GLB would go to those places because they knew people dressed up for these special occassions.

Nayrt but i understand what thT anon is saying. Its annoying watching something you allready do amd enjoy get supper popular and hyped up because its "in" and have people nitpick it to death instead of jist enjoy it amd do their thing, like how a lot of it seemed to be like back then. On top of that, the prices of older items skyrocket or generally just get snatched up by scalpers to sell fpr a progit rather then someone who actually enjoys it, whivh in my opinion sucks because if i camt have it id rather see someone who does own it wear it amd take cute pictures rather then rotting in some greedy botches closet. There are a lot of things that suck when certain aspects of an allready niche fashion become "popular" or "trendy"
