I don't know why but I find drag queens super off putting. Just seems like it's taking the piss out of femininity and not in a particularly sympathetic way either (not to mention that an actual woman would probably get absolutely slated for looking 'trashy' if she styled herself like >>9795206 for instance, but if a man does it it's okay). Not to mention that all my 'progressive' friends seem to absolutely love this stuff even though nothing about drag seems particularly forward-thinking.

Especially seeing them in lolita stuff like in >>9795220 really turns me off, what I like about lolita is that there's something very sincere about the way it approaches femininity. I don't want to see a 6' tall man put his own 'spin' on it.

Can someone please explain this to me? Every time I've tried to discuss drag with someone irl people were just absolutely incredulous that I don't watch Ru Paul's Drag Race with baited breath.

The same argument could be made for lolita and gyaru. Dressing in lolita and gyaru is an exaggeration of a feminine style. We accentuate a type of female silhouette, style our hair and makeup and add appropriate accessories in order to transform into a lolita or gyaru look.

Men do the same when they drag up, they use padding to obtain a shape and then use outfits and makeup and hair to transform to look like a woman. Men do drag for many reasons, but my understanding is that drag is primarily a performance art. Some men do it because they also enjoy the same things women do and want to participate in that.

If you haven’t done so already, watch Paris is Burning. It’s an old doco about the drag scene but it is still very relevant today. Most of the people interviewed were young, poor gay men who wanted to be someone and expressed this by dressing up in drag at the various events around town.

I think people who bring up tumblr feminists are talking about feminists in general, be that terfs or liberal feminists or anything in general, as long as they are stupid feminists that you can find on tumblr.

I remember when feminists on tumblr were hating bronies for "stealing" a cartoon for girls, that's one thing that comes to my mind when people talk about tumblr feminsits.

Drag Race is a show I enjoy because it's silly, joyful, full of drama, and touches on interesting topics while still being lighthearted. I enjoy it at the end of a busy day. But I think most drag race queens should stay away from lolita and kawaii fashion. Aja and Kim Chi are the only ones who have touched on that aesthetic in a way I like on the show.

Im referring to the people who are screaming that drag offends them as woman.
>"Using womanhood as a costume"
>"Taking the piss out of feminity"

Which i then clarified that in my experience is what radfems and terfs say against drag queens, which was different than someone who usually envountered sjw "trans" feminists.
>I mean the ones Im usually encountering are radfems and terfs anyway, which usually complain about drag queens for apparently appropriating femininity
The key words are "the ones -i'm- usually encountering."
Emphasis on "i'm" implying personal experience.

when people say tumblr feminists, they mean the (often teenage, but not always) type of feminist that support transtrenders, is against tanning for cosplay, possibly thinks lolita is oppressive because women can wear jeans now, and tries really hard to appear ''woke'' despite being ignorant/not caring about important issues.

I get being mad about brownies, because it can be so perverse and the amount of grown adults who have turned a kids show into something for them to get their rocks off at is foul. And sure, they're allowed to jerk it to whatever they want, but they are never discreet about it.
But then again that's just my understanding of it. I'm pretty sure drag culture is very deeply rooted with trans culture back in the day, so being mad about that is kind of unnecessary

it's funny how you at once try to essentialize gender, but also assert that it's in your clothing
womanhood is not in your clothing, it's in your life.
it isn't possible for a drag queen to wear womanhood. I personally like seeing feminine dress played with.

Drag is more than clothes, some are performers, others are makeup artists, others design and make their own clothes. There’s some extremely talented people out there and to them it’s not just a hobby, it’s their livelihood.

Drag has contributed to breaking down gender stereotypes, contributed to the arts, dance and fashion and its primarily been a way for gay and effeminate men (and trans women) to express themselves and get paid for it. All you bitches complaining about how it makes you uncomfortable need to sit the fuck down, you down own femininity, gender is dead and live and live.

That’s some serious mental gymnastics desu

Blackface is blatantly racist. Drag is not misogynistic. Not at all the same thing. Drag is a performance art. It’s about blurring the lines of gender or exaggerating it. Talk to any queen and they will mention their appreciation of femininity. Hell many queens find inspiration from the women in their lives. For example Sasha Velour’s style of drag was inspired by her late mother.

>> No.9795839

>>9795816

>Performance art
>In 1848, blackfaceminstrelshows were an American national art of the time, translating formal art such as opera into popular terms for a general audience.

>Appreciation for femininity
>"To this day, Whites admire, envy and seek to emulate such supposed innate qualities of Blackness as inherent musicality, natural athleticism, the composure known as 'cool' and superior sexual endowment," a phenomemon he views as part of the history of blackface. For more than a century, when white performers have wanted to appear sexy, (likeElvis); or streetwise, (likeEminem); or hip, (likeMezz Mezzrow); they often have turned to African-American performance styles, stage presence and personas. Pop culture referencing and cultural appropriation of African-American performance and stylistic traditions is a tradition with origins in blackface minstrelsy.

I agree with this and I think it gives more opportunity for lolita to be viewed in a sexual manner. Not saying that drag is “sexual” but it is often associated with the risqué in both appearance and humor.

I think it’s fine for a drag queen to also be interested in lolita fashion or vice versa but it’s more tasteful and just overall more respectful to either community to not let them bleed over into the other.

There is a period in history when poor black gay men created a subculture around drag, but that's not how drag started, and that's not what drag is today. Nearly all drag queens I've seen were white. A lot of them also appropriate other cultures when they do drag. Some of them aren't even gay.
