Does anyone know any other good places to check for fanmade merch? I'm constructing a Phos itabag but I've checked all of the major ones listed in the FAQ already

>> No.9774476

If you've already checked Etsy/Storenvy/Tictail... the other best options are to go visit the Artist Alley at a con or follow some artists on Twitter who do art for that fandom.

If you're specifically looking for Phos merch - komunhorangi, kyupls, and deadsidekicks on Twitter have some really nice HnK keychains! You can try asking in the AA thread too and see if any of the anons will link their own stores.

Any advice on a better insert fabric? This gengar one I'm using is way too stretchy and droops, kinda feels like too much purple too. Maybe I should try a red insert?
If anyone has some cute decorations in mind I'd love to hear it too.

So I'm crazy about Karl Pilkington from An Idiot Abroad (and other shows). As expected, there's 0 merch of him besides some redbubble stickers. I wish this mindset was more common. I'd rather spend a fuck ton of money on a couple really good bags than have multiple mediocre at best bags.
It's also irritating when people rush to make bags for characters that were just introduced so that they can say that they were the FiRsT!!!1!!!11! to make a bag of that character.

It'd be different if you were buying pre-made letters ready to ship, but you're also paying them to adjust the font/colors/size to your preferences and making sure it all comes out ok in their machine. The custom applique name patches I've bought from etsy were in a similar price range

There's a healthy obsession where you just have a bag of merch to show you really enjoyed a particular series. It doesn't affect your life and you enjoy the creative fashion aspect.

Then theres you sold your kidney for attention on the internet and you'll regret this when you realize a fictional character can't take your virginity, which is the hoarding rooms.

Then theres Betty who takes the stuff she bought for her children as her own, then claims she's a good parent while her children starve as she drops $1000 on a series she's never watched.

Summary. Betty bought an itabag and a huge haul for her daughter, she'd never watched the show but her kid loved it. Her original post to the group made it extremely clear the bag was for the girl. She let's the kid wear the bag once then takes it off her as her own, claiming the bag was hers all along and she never intended for the daughter to have it. She got called out by someone and it spiralled into a shit storm of betty bullshitting and digging a huge grave for herself, all the time other people quoting her previous posts with her stating it was for her daughter. Basically "I bought you this but now I want it so I'm taking it because I paid for it", but to a fucking 7 year old girl.

How is anon's Karl bag any different from the idol, seiyuu, or athlete itabags that Japanese people have made that have also been shared here? What if that anon were to go above and beyond with her bag and it ends up looking really good? If making your own merch for your bag because the person has little to no merch is such a bad thing, why is there a section in the FAQ for just that purpose? Are bags of characters from obscure series suddenly not itabags because someone had to make/commission the merch themselves?

Prior thread someone said that's why a lot of the Japanese itabags are full of repeat badges, like >>9774355. Part of it is not just you going "I'm a fan and this is my husbando, see how much I love him“, it's also saying "look, I throw money at official merch so that the *producers* know it's profitable and continue making more of it". If the official source only gets the money you pay for one set of badges and you’re spending the rest on fan artists that they don’t make money from, they might cut their losses and cancel it, then you won’t have a second season or another game or whatever it was.

That's why it's important that you buy whatever limited official merch there is, and buy a lot of it -- your itabag filled with many of that one single official pin is indirectly saying you're doing your part giving money to the show to have another season on air/a sequel/etc, so all lesser fans not spending money on official merch that encourages the producers to keep the show/game/comic on air/in print are, well, lesser fans.

Really though, it's not a competition and I'm not encouraging any "spendier-than-thou" attitude, it's just something someone else explained in a prior thread that makes sense for why the Japanese bags seem to like showing off bags with many repeat official merch. It’s not like they don’t have enough fanartists at Comiket to make bags with fanart merch, it’s just not the reason they make itabags in the first place.

>> No.9777240

>>9777219
Oh my god, do you guys even read yourselves ? How can you see the shitabags posted on the group and think that our standards are that low too ?

Personally, I'd love to have tons of limited merch of my husbando available ! Unfortunately, he's from a 10-years old game, and while it is part of a very famous series and he has made appearances in other games, he keeps getting passed over for itabag-able merch, so all he has to show for it is :

- 1 rubber strap
- 1 metal pin from a series that came out at the same time as the game
- a few trading cards, one being an exclusive only handed at a few cons.
- a badge from a cafe event last year (had I known about personal shoppers at the time, I would have sent someone, unfortunately I did not)

All this has been sold out at official sources for ages (except maybe the cards, okay, but I have an astronomically low chance of getting him if I buy a pack instead of buying individually, and it would support the entire series, not that specific game) and I had to get it all secondhand, so no money went to the producers anyways. So I found the one piece of fanmerch available on Etsy, I commissioned badges and pins, I used the official manga and doujins (all of which I own copies of) and pixel art of the games to make badges and keychains and pins, and so on. I even made a plush of my husbando in the style of the official plushes. Am I a lesser fan for this ? Is my bag lesser for this ? Yet it was posted in the itabag threads when it was way less advanced than it is today, and praised every time.

>You can't just change someone's origin story because it's not inclusive enough, if itabags were originally supposed to encourage fans to buy tons of merch to show support for a show, then it is what it is.

Personally, in my own opinion, I think shipping a ton of pins is a waste of money, the shipping generally costs as much as the pins themselves. My own opinion is that international fans should really be showing off their international Blu-ray/DVD collections, because if we make that trending that we want translated releases, the companies might take notice and make it happen more often, even for smaller shows. But that doesn't make for a good fashion statement you can carry around, so I guess it'll remain my unpopular opinion. Oh well.

I've been wanting to make a Pomeranian itabag for daily use since I'm a little self conscious about carrying my husbando ones outside of an anime convention. Are there any other mascot-type pomeranians besides Pometan? I've considered making pins using pictures of my own pom, but that seems like a whole other level of creepily obsessed obsessed.

What is this guilt-tripping shit? No, no one wants to buy up the blurays/DVDs to get more translated releases, oftentimes the fandom translates content on its own. Plus there's some series, like idolm@ster, that wouldn't provide content for international fans regardless of how it sells overseas.
Merch is more specific (ie. I like this character in particular), more personalized, and yes itabagging is a fashion-based hobby.

>Don't use glue dots apparently they melted for one person

I'm probably the person you're referring to. I had two bags that were affected. Luckily neither were finished but it's still a pain to deal with. I followed an anon's advice to avoid Goo Gone and tried to research other options.

One suggestion was using peanut butter and it actually seemed to work pretty well with the rubber keychains, although the entire process was a pain in the ass. PB takes forever to rinse off and there's residue from the peanut oil, so I took dish soap and a toothbrush and scrubbed. Some pb was left in tiny nooks and crannies so I tried wood glue and it worked.

Five acrylic keychains were also affected. One of them wasn't bad and was fairly easy to clean, but as for the other four I'm still having a difficult time after the peanut butter trick...

As for the bags themselves, both have some melted glue dots on the window. One was a cheap AmiAmi bag (just like >>9776682 but blue) so I decided to try to put it in the wash with some vinegar on gentle cycle, but it didn't remove the residue. I'm not sure what to try at this point...

tl;dr Don't use glue dots on your itabags.

This is what I hate the most. We're dropping hundreds to be able to make our bags, support the shows we love and be a part of this hobby. But then there's privileged little bitches who show not only no respect to the creators, but drag the whole community down just because they think they're entitled to join in.

Money isn't even a fucking excuse. Yeah some of us can drop £300/$400 at once on a bag, and you know why? Because we have jobs, because we worked hard for our income. But there's baggers who don't have expendable income , who vigilantly save or just buy one or two straps a month. Who spend months building their merch up slowly and understand this is a long investment. Just because you're an impatient little bitch doesn't mean you can shit on the rest of us. Yeah we are elitist, yeah we are exclusive, TOUGH.SHIT. Either be prepared to drop the cash or find another hobby. Bootlegs are literally killing the industry, they stop us getting new merch, they cost people their jobs and livelihoods. Anyone who can brag about buying this shit and the stand there and criticize us for buying legit needs to buy a bootleg gun and put it in their mouth.

I don’t have disposable income that’s why I save and budget like crazy, it took me a year to put my ita bag together, I bought a couple of items a month and you know what? It makes me feel ten times better knowing that I’m supporting the creators, businesses and also the resellers I’m and out of Japan that have gone out their way to get official merch and Japanese exclusives to sell on to westerners. I have a long way to go to make my Sonic bags way more presentable, but you have to put some sort of effort into the thing you like.

NAYRT I want to post my bag on fb for con/crit but I want suggestions from people with real itabags not tweens with half-empty bootleg Shitabags.

>B-but my fave obscure/western/completelymadeupinmyhead husbando doesn’t have enough official itabag-able merch

Don’t make an itabag for it then

Like the saying goes, slow and steady wins the race. Take your time anon and your bag will be superior than those who value quantity over quality

That kind of attitude kind of blocks it at the source, though. If they’re asking for suggestions of animal mascots it opens up the opportunity to become a fan. Same as if someone wanted a bag for cats. There’s plenty but some you might not know about. Suggestions mean you find more, learn more, and become a fan. Why are you so uptight about a bag for a simple dog theme anyway? Mascots are just cute drawings to sell merch. It’s not that deep.

My two finished bags took me over a year collecting mech for each. One is popular and her merch don't show up as often, and the other girl I saved up cash and bought merch in Tokyo for instead of shipping it. I almost got all the merch for two new bags in Japan as well, and my friend is living there now and can ship stuff for me.

I for one like the time consuming part of finding merch. I don't do dupes because my characters have enough merch, but the collecting proccess I love.

I just spent 3 months saving for a bag and blew it all. Nightmare finding the merch because of character tax but I feel so happy and proud. I hope my bag will do them justice!

See, you don't need instant gratification. If you're devoted enough to make a bag you should be devoted enough to save.

They're currently having a sale that lasted over a month so it seems pretty regular?

I have five Naruto bags so when people are saying they can’t find merch for it so they opt for bootleg, they’re clearly not even looking. Plus the stuff runs about average for the mains and average for others, unless you are looking for special edition items. People need to gtfo if they aren’t willing to spend a little time, effort, and money on this hobby.
