Wanna put together a JC Denton costune for Halloween. Most of it seems pretty straight forward, but I can think of a few problems:
1. His eyes are supposed to be solid blue and glowing behind his glasses. Obviously there's no way to perfectly replicate that irl. Should I just skip that and hope no one looks too closely? Or drop $200 on blue scleras that would still leave my pupil visible? I could use lights as well. I remember once when I was little, one of my friends had a costume where she was a ghoul and she had these little lights she wore like a pair glasses behind her mask that gave her the appearance of glowing eyes. I have no idea what this apparatus is called though
2. The bioelectric circuits on his hands; using makeup seems like a bad idea since it would be so easy for it to rub off on my hands, and something glued to my hand would pucker
3. I'm female, but JC wears body armor. Can I get away without binding if I pad out the lower portions of the armor? I'm 32D and I have fucked up ribs and spine and binding is extremely painful for me (even regular bras cause me a lot of pain)

What's a good fabric to use for bodysuit mockups/a good place to get it? If you want to use something that's gonna be kinda cheaper than what you'd use in the end, I guess. I've read a bunch of tutorials online and can't seem to get an answer for this. I always feel super lost when I have to make a 'muslin' out of something that isn't muslin

half mask for the eyes that attaches separately to the front of a full head headdress, wings that attach to the back of the headdress.
How you're going to mimic the seamless shape however is rather beyond me.
I'd probably have separate detachable pieces of heavy fabric (fleece maybe?) that looks like the 'fur' moths have to cover the ugly parts of the headdress and connect with the outline of the wings, which I imagine as more of a casa satin or crepe backed satin.
I haven't done much for my own cosplays, so don't think I actually know what I'm talking about.

How would you guys go about adding some designs to a wig? Not looking to dye to wig, just to add in specific designs like Earth chan or Jasdevi. Temporary hair spray, hair chalk, spray or acrylic paint, markers, badly cut out pieces of paper, those plastic sheets people use for Houseki No Kuni cosplay, and strategically placed wefts are all options I could think of.

The hair spray and paint seem temporary and easy, but make the wig look like a ratty crunchy mess. Marker and the hair chalk seem a bit time consuming and I've only seen marker used, plus I don't know if it'll be temporary in case you want to reuse the wig.

You can always go back with a heavier hand later but it's harder to undo heavy paint.

Just go to the bargain bin section of your fabric store and get something that feels the same as your actual fabric. Make sure it has roughly the same weight and the same kind of stretch and it should work.

This is a dumb question, but exactly "how dark" is Pishposh Wigs' dark brown? I had originally ordered a wig from them in black brown, but they emailed me to let me know that they are not getting that color anymore, and offered me the same wig in dark brown or a full refund. In the very worst case, you can go a little lighter than you think you need and dye the wig with synthetic fabric dye. I did this three Halloweens ago with an Arda Stevie since it didn't come in the color I wanted; I took it from rose pink to a deep crimson. Just make sure you thoroughly wash the wig before wearing it to wash out the excess dye

Just wondering what kind of hairstyle and style of menswear is that. It’s too relaxed to be a tuxedo. The hair obviously needs to be a wig since my hair isn’t long enough to style this way.

Tanaka is wearing a suit jacket. As for hair, it's a side part. If you are going for a wig, look for a short front lace wig ($$$) since the hairline is exposed.

Flyers advertising some in-game goods *might* make you more recognizable and are easier props to carry around than a table.

Why not just use those plastic ornament orbs from Hobby lobby? They come in a lot of sizes and are already in two pieces which you can put in to the mask. That way you dont have to try and make perfect half spheres. To color them you can sand them a bit to give a texture then go over it with some translucent paint so it has a tint that you can still see through.

A paint i recommend is the brand Vitrail. Its a stained glass type paint so it gives a nice color while allowing light through it. Looking through tinted lenses is always going to limit your eyesight a bit but this is the best way i can think of.

I'm working on a sword prop that has a relatively flat blade (>1/4in, <1/2in). I know the hilt and crossguard will most likely be made of a wooden dowel and foam. However, I'm hung up on what to use for the blade. The lower half above the crossguard is heavily ornamented and the actual blade component will "slot in", so stability isn't an issue. Main thing is deciding what material to use. Insulation foam is probably impractical since it's so thin. I'm thinking of using balsa or another soft craft wood, since it should be decently strong once sealed/plastidipped and I don't plan on actually using it for mock swordplay. Any thoughts/advice?

you could probably make it out of heated and shaped EVA foam, you could make it out of paper mache, you could make it out of clay, you could make a paper mache/clay version and cast a resin or plastic version out of it.

out of them, the EVA mask would be the lightest probably, but the least resistant.
the clay would be the heaviest
paper mache would be heavier than eva, but manageable
casting would be only slightly heavier than foam, and would be way more durable, but it's also much more difficult to create a positive, make a mold, and cast one piece than it is to shape whatever you want.

really, it's up to you, paper mache is fine, eva foam seems like it'd be fine, and if you're experienced with things like casting or 3d printing, plastic would be a fine option.

It's something I have run into before with these Chinese stores. Even ordering 3 to 4 months ahead of time you will barely get it before you need it. You can try to fight them on it or submit a dispute in PayPal to start off. Paper mache is 10x cheaper than any method I could think of for masks and it can hold up for a long time. Its what I used for Totokaka years ago.. its better if you sand it down a bit to make it smooth though.. but since itll be black itll be much harder to notice how unsmooth it is.

You can use the cheap method: flour, water, newspaper / printer paper (stronger) & something to make the shape (a balloon?)

If you don't layer it right it could break easy but if you put enough layers the mask can hold up consecutive wears & drops. Also i think you should go for a red fabric rather than a film so its easier for you to breathe but thats just me.

What material would be best suited for making a prop sword blade with a fairly low thickness (<1/2 in)?

I'm looking at something like balsa or luan board since I don't know if I can get thin enough sheets of insulation foam or if it would resist cracking as much as sealed wood.

Pic related is the sword, the blade will likely be around 3-3.5 feet long and slot into the ornate bit above the crossguard for stability, since it'll be too thin to run a pine dowel through.

i'm making a prop guitar for a cosplay (roughly based off pic attached, but VERY roughly since i don't know fuck about guitars and don't care if i forget to carefully illustrate some copper-gelded string tuning defenestration appendage or w/e the fuck)

i'm making it out of posterboard with cardboard sandwiched inbetween (posterboard is $7 for a package of four, cardboard is free) and strips of craft foam around the sides to hide the edges. however, i want a shellaque-y glossy look that makes it look at least SOMEWHAT plausible. should i layer something over the whole thing or just spray-paint and literally shellaque it?

I'm new here. so forgive me if my newfag is showing.
I don't have a reverse explorer on hand right now. But I could dig up some reference photos if you need them.
I've made a few prop guitars for smashing in music videos.
Cut out a shape from plywood and double it down on the back to give it the right thickens. Hardware stores will even CNC it in to shape for you for a few dollars, or free if you ask real nice. Put some fret wire on the neck to make it look legit. Regular wire will do if it's not going to be inspected.
Glue some knobs to it. I have tuners and pickup covers laying around and I could re-salvage them off the smashed prop guitar.
Than paint it with acrylic lacquer, than a few coats of clear coat and a polish.
Pretty sure a non guitar player couldn't tell a difference.

try to avoid playing with and rearranging it unecessarily, especially if wearing gloves and bring some cheapo kids detangler spray with you (finger comb, don't brush/comb while on you). Bringing a ribbon, not hairtie, to tie it lightly on your way there or during downtime & meals can be handy too

Don't move your head unnecessarily, look around with your whole shoulders when possible. Basically disturb the wig as little as possible whenever you can help it. Treat it like a delicate hat instead of real hair. In transit keep it in a loose braid.

Iron it on an ironing board with a clothes iron to straighten it and remove frizz after every wear. My longest straight wig is down to my waist and is an Arda and *all* of the notorious Arda frizz dissolves when I do this.

Looking for tutorials and any advice on drafting a pattern for Miki's loose socks (pic related). I have a land elastic band for the top and another smaller band to make the bottom of the sock "hug" the shoe, but I'm having trouble figuring out a good shape for the socks and running out of time.

I've seen some people use eyelash glue to adhere stuff to their face. If you plan on trimming the wig, I'd recommend using the trimmings so the goatee matches the wig color. Good luck anon! Kaito is one of my favs from DRV3!

Cravat patterns are generally just a long rectangle which gets gathered around the neck as you tie it. The only difference with this is that it has layered rectangles at the end that sticks out. If you wanted to do actual leatherwork you could probably get away with thin 2mm tooling leather, since you wouldn't actually need to carry any weight with it. Plus you'd probably be able to stitch leather that thin with a sewing machine, meaning you'd need less tools. At most you would need to buy some snaps and rivets for the retention strap., and probably a buckle if you tried to make the belt too.

The main thing would be to avoid sucking in your stomach. That would just make it more obvious that it's an area you're concerned about. What may also help is to work on your posture. Keeping a long straight back will help to stop areas from bunching up and showing fat. It also would help to avoid poses with too much bending for the same reason.

And for the photogs, I'd imagine you could just say that you're a bit self-conscious about your mid-drift and were wondering if they could do anything to make sure it doesn't look bad. Practice in the mirror. Skinnyfat isn't a body shape so the poses that will suit you will depend on where your fat sits. In more general terms: Posture! Slouching creates belly pooch. A 3/4 angle is often more flattering than straight on but be careful if you have slight muffin top (can be hidden by strategic hand on the hip) or arm chub (looks worse from the side), transfer weight to one leg to "pop" your hip out and create more of a curve between hip and waist, a slight increase in your lower back arch smooths things out at the front, don't suck in but try tensing your abs a bit (kinda feels like pelvic floor exercises), heels make legs look good and create length - if you don't wear heels, raising very slightly up on to the balls of your feet/transferring your weight forwards tenses the muscles in your legs just a tiny bit to make them look more toned. Here’s a tutorial for it I found quick on google. My only advice is to spray the heck out of it to make sure the strands don’t move out of place and fuck up the design. I started to work on the sleeves to my current cosplay that I've been holding off on. However, through some unusual witchcraft (And my ineptitude when it comes to sewing), I have sewed my sleeves on incorrectly, as shown in the picture. If you just seam rip them, it shouldn't affect the rest of your outfit; then you can just resew them on correctly (...I sew on sleeves backwards more often than I'd like to admit). The only issue you might have is, depending on what type of fabric, you might get puncture holes from the needle (but if they're going to get covered up anyways, it shouldn't be a big deal).

Hard netting, horsehair braid, and magic. You could also try corset boning; the plastic kind would probably be strong enough for support, but flexible enough so you could squeeze through crowds and doors. It would be pretty easy to add structure to the white layer (netting, braid, and/or bone) and just have the black layer on top if it's not too heavy

Not sure whether to ask here or in the stupid questions thread but if I'm getting stringiness/pulling apart after gluing together EVA foam armor seams with contact cement, is it likely that I'm letting it dry too much/not enough, or is something maybe up with my glue itself? Or some other newbie mistake?
I usually apply a fairly thick coat to both sides and let it sit for about 20 mins before pressing together.

If the armor is foam, one thing you can try is to make a pattern of the design you want 'etched' into the armor out of wire. Then you use a heat gun to soften the foam and press the wire into it, leaving an impression. You should be able to reuse the same pattern or two across the armor.

I dont know if a similar trick works for worbla.

Hey, so I have this invisible zipper (on the right in pic) that doesn't have any stopping mechanism on this end since I had to cut it short to fit the length of my fabric. I'd like to make it so it opens up because there's a stopper on the other end, which it currently does, it's just that the zipper comes entirely off and I have to manually reattach it stuffing the two chains inside. I'm wondering if there's any way I can feasibly DIY up a proper open end stopper like the one on the left in pic, where it can click in and zip up or you can take it out and unzip safely?

If there isn't anything, where would I be able to buy something like those stoppers so I can manually fix it in myself? Would a sewing/fabric store have it? Can I buy them online (been trying to search for them on amazon/ebay but idk what search terms to use to find this thing I'm looking for)?

A french hood rests on top of the hair and covers the whole back, that looks like it's just stuck in from the side. It reminds me more of those sunburst/halo crowns, pic related. Maybe attached to a toothed headband worn at an angle and a veil just under the outer ring. It's gonna be fragile as fuck if it's not metal though, not sure how suitable it is for a play. Putting together a Chilchuck outfit.

So far, I have everything except for the Padded
Leather Gambeson with side-buckles, and the fingerless leather gloves.

I was considering taking a pair of cuffed leather gloves and cutting off the finger-tips myself, but I'm not sure about what to do for the Gambeson. Especially because all of the Gambesons I can find are far too large for me, being a ~31 chest.

I was also planning on going with a green knitted circle scarf.

Should be simple but because of how simple and undetailed it is, I feel like I need to be really careful with each piece.

So a little over $100 at least for a full fitting.

Problem is, coats, especially suit coats, are a pain in the ass to alter. You basically have to make a completely new coat, so you need a fantastic tailor and it might cost you up to 250 or more just for an alteration to go down a size.

I think I figured out a solution. I'm going to just cut the cheap fabric 2 layers at a time then sew the two layers on top of each other sown together on the edges.
That way it has the "look" of being ripped without ever actually coming apart.

Burn it. If its a poly mix the plastic portion will melt amd seal it. If its cotton it'll "cauterize." Cutting fabric to resemble tears always looks like a child's art project unless you really know what you're doing.

Yeah, a padded cloth was something I was considering as well, it just seemed odd for a Wizardry-Parody Thief to not be wearing Leather in my mind I guess and it isn't very specific on materials.

That being said, same problem due to the type of armour, with side buckling instead of something like a lace front.

As someone who actually has to wear a gambeson/padded jacket on a regular basis, you don't want leather, especially if you're trying to make one yourself. Side-buckled gambesons are also really simple to pattern out and make on your own if you don't expect it to actually take any hits.

You could also iron black fusible interfacing to the bottom if you want a really clean edge. Gives the added advantage of the feathers holding their shape better. You might wanna put in a wire down the middle to imitate the stem for the long ones in the back too.

Seconding >>9796614. An easy way to get into the habit and make it easier is to tighten your stomach muscles every time you do X.
My mom taught me to do it when you walk through a doorway, for example.
Stomach vacuums are good for this too. Even when I'm pretty chubby, I still have a relatively flat stomach, and I attribute it to having a strong core.

Posture wise, remember to keep your shoulders straight and back straight with your butt out, trying to be as tall as possible.

next time to avoid attaching the wrong sides, add small snips to your seam allowance to mark front and back (I use two small snips for the back and 1 for the front). if your front and back bodice look samey, add snips to the armhole seam allowance too. or mark everything with matching colored pins
