Cosplay is usually based on anime. Anime tends to have attractive male characters. If you're a young male-attracted girl approaching puberty or experiencing it at that time, it makes sense that said characters would draw you in. Thus, a "phase" begins.
Not rocket science.

I don't really like to acknowledge my gay in such a way, so looking at it makes it feel wrong, though sometimes I like it. I'm fine with some Shoujo ai and seeing girls in couples that are my type, but otherwise not. My other lesbian friend loves bl shows far more than I do, so at least I'm not alone in my circle. I've never been one to get off of yaoi though (nor has my friend), I don't see how people can do it, I just use it as the only form of romance I can enjoy

Aren't we all blowing the concept of bishounen out of proportion? We like men, what about it?

In my opinion anime men are suppose to be just as unrealistic as anime girls. It's part of their stylistic medium, and that aesthetic had better match! To be fair if you simply tone down the clean, perfect, pasty texture of an anime character most of them are meant to represent pretty average people. Not too beautiful, but very seldom ugly. The very concept of bishonen, pretty young men, can actually be found in real life such. 3D people might be pigs, but let's keep those memes out of there. Women like men, and will seek out their preference. Whether this is skinny sticks or burly muscle mounds is their choice. We all just happen to be into this dumb asian artstyle when it comes to our attractive cartoons. I don't see any discussions about guys having a moe-phase?

The discussion has already devolved into questions of yaoi in relation to personal sexual orientation. It wouldn't surprise me if the fujoshit crossplaying will rear its ugly head to bring up our gender of choice too. Wouldn't those be more appropriate and positively bait-iculous topics for an entire thread?

I'm in a lesbian relationship and have only dated women before but I appreciate human bodies in general so I personally enjoy a bit of everything.
I think the reason I started to enjoy m/m content (whether bishie or bara desu) is because the whole thing about two men being is love is seen under a lot worse/more taboo a light than f/f and leaves space for a lot of "forbidden love" plots that I personally enjoy. Irl men usually make such a point in underlining how gross it is to get it on with a dude, feeling the need to "no homo" at any accidental closeness, that I ended up enjoying reading stories on male characters finding and exploring their love for eachother, their bodies, etc.
The m/m content I look at escapes the stereotypical uke/seme shit, so it's a plus. Nowadays I just look at that sort of content as any other couple content.
F/f is cute and I enjoy it too but I find that a lot of is either male fantasies of lesbians or, since I am with a girl myself, kinda inaccurate, which can put me off. Of course there is good content too, which I like.
As for m/f, I'm perfectly okay with general love stories and consume plenty of them, I just stay away from the porn because the vast majority just seems so exaggerated and kinda gross.
I hope this makes some sense, my english sometimes fails me.

It literally means 'beautiful boy', and the google image results are quite like that lol. For adult men (20+) it's better to use the term 'ikemen'. And yes beautiful male anime characters are 'bishounen' for the most part, since they are 9/10 times underage. Just look at Fruits Basket, Ouran High School Host Club, Uta no Prince-sama, etc. etc.
