Con horror stories? I love reading these. Last thread deleted.

>> No.9763540

>university sponsored con trip
>underage drinking carries threat of expulsion
>get 4 hotel rooms, needing a different room owner for each
>convince friend to be room owner
>okay but not one better vomit in my room
>spend most of con with gf
>fall asleep random one of four rooms
>wake up
>anon did you hear? someone died!
>shitbricks.exe
>head to mentioned room
>see friends going down elevator
>ask them where they're going
>oh we're just going to get arrested
>get to room (the one owned by the friend I convinced)
>vomit everywhere
>learn underage rando got into our rooms and was given drinks by elevatorfriend
>drank too much and became unresponsive
>had to be taken by paramedics and pumped
For whatever reason, the parents never pressed charges and no one was expelled. The only loser here was the friend who owned the room but holy shit don't let minors drink they don't know what they're doing.

>this panel room is right down the hall from my panel
>Right when I get to the panel room to set up, I'm told that they've been having mic problems all day
>My mic stops working 5 minutes into the panel

>A-kon 2013
>Driving there with friends
>It's like a 3 hour drive
>The minute we arrive, the car gets a flat tire
>We end up having to wait for the repairmen to arrive
>It takes them longer to arrive than we thought, by the time the car's all fixed we're all feeling pretty done
>But it's only Thursday! The con hasn't actually started yet! By tomorrow we'll forget all about this!
>Next day
>Toward the evening, we're told that there's a tornado on the ground in one of my friend's town
>The Moore Tornado happened only weeks prior, and we were all still really shaken from that. One of my friends lost his home in it. Hearing about another tornado on the ground in one of our areas has us all pretty shook.
>We spend hours panicking, trying to stay calm and get a hold of people
>A few hours later, the tornado lifts. Nobody we know was hurt, damage was minimal.
>Now it's night
>But we can still salvage this con yet, right?
>We go to some panels, we get food. Everything's calming down.
>Surely we can put this all behind us tomorrow, right?
>Wrong.
>My friend's costume malfunctions the next day. I don't remember which costume it was or what exactly happens, just that she spent hours in her room trying to adjust it. She ended up missing a lot of the con because of that
>It was like the straw that broke the camel's back, she became extremely negative and really unpleasant to be around for the remainder of the con (can't say I blame her, but the rest of us were trying to salvage the con and be optimistic)
>Spent the rest of the con getting bitched at by her, saying nothing in response because I wanted to be ~patient~ and ~understanding~ with her but god damn was she going overboard with some of it
>Haven't been to A-kon since

>> No.9767634

A few details I forgot to mention
>I found out later that part of her bitching on Saturday included telling the rest of our friends but not me that she really didn't like my costume and that it didn't suit me. It wasn't my best costume, for sure, but she really should've told me that to my face. Really pissed me off.
>Everybody but my friend with costume malfunctions was having a pretty good time on Saturday until she started bitching. We might have been able to have a good time at the con for the rest of the weekend if not for her.

Part 1 got 10k views or so and after that each episode petered in at 2-3k each. They said they're going to keep making the series but move on from the current charecters/story which I don't exactly understand...it didn't really have an ending.

>> No.9767747

I ran a Jojo cosplay meetup once and there was one girl who looked 14 and had a really bad wig INSISTING that she was actually Bruno's reincarnated self. Throughout the meetup she kept telling people to ask her anything they want about the Vento Aureo characters and that she'd answer. Luckily it was a small meetup mostly full of people who only watched the anime at a fairly small convention, so nobody did. Even more lucky, there were no Vento Aureo cosplayers there (except "Bruno" of course). Didn't stop her from being obnoxious anyways though.

Not as bad as everyone else's stories, I know, but I think about this all the time.

>> No.9767765

>>9767627
I never understood why people spend so much time finishing or adjusting a costume at a con unless it's going into the costume contest. I freak out enough trying to make sure I haven't forgotten to pack anything before the con that if my costume isn't done by the weekend before, it isn't going to that con. My con pack includes a hot glue gun, a hand serger and safety pins to fix minor malfunctions, but after that, con time is too precious to waste fixing a costume.

Thanks, anon.

Learned my lesson and haven't worked a cafe since. I'll be judging any new ones I even contemplate joining very carefully before auditioning or volunteering.

The first one I worked (not that one I greentexted) was only a half-garbage fire, but the people I worked with really dug deep and were the sweetest people ever. I felt like we all worked super well together putting out fires, and didn't try to take anything too seriously. It's grown tremendously, and has a cafe full of pretty faces and adorable/cool-ass people. Would 100% stayed with that cafe if I were still in the area.

Well he insisted that things are cool.

Grown up people should be able to take care of themself and even if its very sweet that you thought about his feelings this much and this whole "caring for another person" thing is, I guess, sort of one major point of having a relationship, it's still up to everyone involved to show at least a bit of commitment in terms of getting trough rough situations as smooth as possible.
That also means being able to know ones own boundaries, at least after they get crossed the first time if not beforehand.

I don’t go to cons or cosplay (I only come here for the horror story threads) and really liked it. Obviously as an outsider I am sure that many of the jokes and little references go over my head, but I “get” a lot of it. Certainly all the awkwardness and poor social skills, those are common enough in my own hobbies. It’s very well done, hopefully the people behind it make some more stuff.

>Friend B backs out a week before the con due to family emergency
>feel bad for her, but screaming internally because she's always been the one who keeps the other 3 in check

>at least B is understanding about the room being nonrefundable

I have event management experience (nightclubs) but in my Lolita and con community I could be stepping on some very prissy toes.

I'd like to start a cafe that's supportive and the employees' rights are protected. No exploitation, no backstabbing, no lying. Instead, feedback and fairness. It wouldn't be designed to be extremely competitive like the other cafes, but rather as an example of what a good workplace and team can be.

>landwhale messages me from cafe fb since she's too chicken to say it to my face

This element I'd be in two minds about. If I were to have a conversation about something as serious as dismissal, I'd rather everything be in writing so it's more transparent. I get that it's impersonal and cowardly when you have a history, but at least you always have evidence.

A commissioned costume can compete, but the winner is the person who made it, not the person wearing it. I believe most cons require the person who made it to be there, but there might be exceptions. I'm pretty sure I was almost a small horror story for one girl at least for casually facebook stalking.

>Go to convention with some mates, meet some friendly grills lining up so make casual small talk, they seem nice. We hang out a little bit more at a different panel, thats about it, we're all a bit socially awkward so it's nice, and one of em is a real QT.
>Go home from convention, add a few of the interesting people we hung out with on facebook and browse for others.

>Go to a different convention nearby again, meet the same girls from before, so we hang out and have a few drinks and dance together at the party. Meet up the next night for more of the same.
>QT Grill asks if we want to exchange info and add eachother on something, I grab my phone and load up facebook then go to pass to her so she can find herself and we can send a request.
>Then I remember.
>When I was browsing for people from the first con even though we only spoke a few times I had searched her badge name out of curiosity. Won't that turn up in recent searches when she starts searching?
>Holy shit that would be super creepy if she notices and I'm already in too deep to stop and too drunk to play it off. Fuck I'm going to be a /cgl/ greentext of some weeaboo stalker.
>It's not a big deal right? Trying to find an aquaintence on facebook? I don't know it could still be really weird.
>Oh thank fuck, the search is about 6 or 7 down on recent searches so won't show up unless you actively look for it.
>Pass her the phone and hope for the best. Pic related.
>She adds herself to my contacts and everything continues fine. We chat a bit from time to time.
>Still end up a /cgl/ greentext because I posted this.

>I call him out. We were so worried we called the police. I missed my chance to see Versailles. We lost HOURS of con time looking for him, thinking he might have been kidnapped or something
>he continues to act like it's no big deal
>he ends up staying with another friend of ours that night. No doubt because I was very vocal about how mad I was at him
>Next day I find this other friend alone in dealer's room and we talk about what happened yesterday
>She tells me that he lied to me about where he was going to college (he told me he was moving across the country)
>She tells me that he's moving in with her
>We have no idea why he lied to me about it, it wasn't meant to be a secret

Like.. If you've graduated highschool I assume you're somewhat close to being adults, do you really need to call the police over your buddy being missing for like two hours? Like odds are he is at a panel or hanging out with some people, he is at least 17 or 18 right? If he was missing for two days and didn't come back to the room I'd maybe start getting worried but why sweat over another adult? Not just you but a lot of these horror stories pull on similar notes when people freak out over folks not awnsering phones.

One of our buddies went missing for nearly two days when one morning he volenteered to be a gopher on the saturday and spent all day running around with staff members and then went for a few drinks, forgot he hadn't eaten all day so got drunk quickly stumbled back to his room passed out at like 8pm and woke up massively hung over and stayed in bed all day. When he eventually met up with us again at like 6pm we just went "Oh there you are, not seen you since friday where have you been mate?".

I haven't been in touch with him since he transferred. I occasionally check to see if he has a Facebook or Twitter, but so far I haven't seen one for him. I've also never found an obituary or a Findagrave page for him, so I think he's probably still alive.

So we went this con in NJ. Castle Point Anime Con. I think it was 2015-16??, one of the two. It's me and my brothers first time going to a convention. We have a great time the first day and we go to panels and maid cafes. All that good shit. We kept going back to the karoke club on site as we found it to be pretty fun. So, it's the next day and we go back to the karaoke club to relax and get away from the heat. As we walk inside it kinda smells... and as we step into the room it was filled with fat cosplayers who were sweaty and their hair was greasy af. As we got closer the whole room literally smelled like a swamp. We just left the room not wanting to be in there. It was pretty bad... but we still had a good time regardless.

>> No.9777056

The story I'm about to retell in green text is not my own but was passed down by an older cosplayer. Back when I was 16 I was going to my third con and first out-of-state con. The groups sole leader was at the time a 20 years old, who was pretty much the backbone of this operation, hence he had the right to veto anything. A friend of a friend tried to get another friend/random along without prior agreement and the 20 years old gave him the no, despite much insistence he wouldn't budge and ultimately the random didn't tag along.

During the drive he told the following story;
>One of his first cons, someone's parent forces the group to take their (not the storyteller's) cousin - who was new to town - along
>Despite being new said cousin had a reputation as an obnoxious creep and petty thief, storyteller decides to give her a chance
>During the trip cousin has really bad flatulence, denies everything and blames everyone else
>Group had bought snacks to last the entire trip (both ways, major detail apparently), and skip long necessary stops
>Cousin eats snacks and then proceeds to demand they stop at every road stop
>Ends up making one stop every hour instead of one stop every four hours
>Arrive at con in late evening instead of early afternoon, storyteller admits at this point that he was too inexperienced to be fuming, was still willing to give cousin more chances
>Turns out cousin didn't have a con ticket
>Cousin either has to go back or stay in room
>Cousin somehow begs the group into buying her a ticket
>When they get to the room the cousin immediately calls dips on the largest bed
>Which was actually intended for the parents who was chaperoning us, having paid for it
>Cousin throws a tantrum until she has it her way, refuses to share the bed with anyone
>Parents are now forced into one smaller bed, and because of the extra person two people have to share a smaller bed too, while cousin has a huge bed all for themself

>> No.9777057

>>9777056
>This is the point where storyteller is officially tired of giving the cousin more chances, remarks he is not the only one
>One parent is convincing the other parent not to take a greyhound back, barely succeeding
>The person the cousin is related to even attempts to discretely drag cousin aside and tell them to stop fucking around
>Cousin doesn't stop fucking around
>Group is told to never go alone and meeting up at ~2 hours intervals is planned to make sure everyone is accounted for all the time
>Cousin disregards this, walks around alone and never goes at the meeting up
>Oh well, what did you expect?
>When cousin finally is around she is loudly injecting herself into others conversation and hitting on everyone
>Cockblocks storyteller a few times by claiming to be his girlfriend
>At this point storyteller tells cousin to fuck off, surprisingly cousin did
>Come night, come sleep, come next day
>Someone's elaborate cosplay is missing, is found under cousins bed, wrinkled and covered in dust-bunnies, but no serious damage
>That someone's parents are the one chaperoning us
>Everyone is looking at cousin, cousin denies everything
>Tries to run, but is caught and put in a headlock, the relative of the cousin finds their phone and checks the pictures
>And indeed cousin had taken the cosplay, tried it on, taken a few pictures, damning evidence

And that was the drop, both for the parents, the cousin's relative and the group. Someone called their aunt, had a very serious talk, same evening said aunt picked up the cousin and the rest of the con went okay.

Sorry if I made any spelling errors or if it seems unbelievable. Maybe the guy was exaggerating, but he presented it as one of the reasons why he put so much effort into organizing convention trips by strict, very strict, rules.

>Too fucking tired to argue, I just go home and collapse.
>Upset as fuck that 14 hours of driving led me to my worst con experience ever as well as being fucked out of money by a 'friend'.

Two positives came out of this. One is that I didn't give up on cons and go to 2-3 a year with a lot less anxiety that I used to which makes them a lot more fun. Second is that after this event, we drifted apart and I never had to deal with his shit again.

And they're always worse because of the babysitters?

STOP BABYSITTING GROWN ASS MEN AND WOMEN!!

They are not your responsibility, go watch your music, then decide if you need to worry about someone getting fucked while you don't know where they're at.

Too many in this generation suffer from some serious FOMO, and can't just make they're own life interesting. FFS.

Glad it worked out in the end for you though.

>or getting pissy that an adult friend wanted to do their own thing at an anime con
That's exactly what happened last time I went to a con with a group. They got pissed off at me because I didn't want to stand in line for hours while they got signatures from some VA I don't care about. They literally started berating me, asking why I even bother going to cons if I don't want to get signatures/photos with the celebs, as if that's the only thing a person can do at cons. It's not like I was even leaving a friend all alone, all 3 were going to see the same VAs so I don't get why I had to as well.

I'm still baffled as to why me doing my own thing was such a crime, but now I usually go with just one other person to avoid the drama.

I have the reverse problem
Most of my main friend group has slowly stopped going. Now all I'm left with from my original core group is a clinger and a beta orbiter of the clinger. Any time we want to do different things at the same time I suggest splitting up and meeting back up later and all she does is complain and protest. It always ends up with her and orbiter following me to my choice and telling me how shit it is, just to go and do it 5 more times throughout the con. Fortunately I've spread my wings enough that I've met a secondary con-going group and have started to move away from what was left of my old core group.

Oh man, from 13 up I used to organize a huge trip in my little town, at first it was like 3 people, then 5, then two cars. Maxed at like 10 people I think. At one point it was 2 cars and a drop off at the train station, and 2 hotel rooms booked for the large group. The group would always splinter.

Some of the group started peeling away complaining. Usual stuff. Core group, like to hang out friday go to AMV's, then disperse saturday into smaller 2 people groups. I knew some people so we'd get back together for large events and skip the line.

One section of the group starts getting bitchy. Kick them out. Next year I realize it's all the people that like to wait hours in lines at signings, and I never helped them with that. Only thing I can't skip actually, and I too don't have any interest in it.

So, every year, it was a smaller group 6 in 2 rooms, and we leave room for a single add on. But only one person from our group goes and meets up with the old splinter group, just to wait in line for autographs, then he rejoins us, that's like the only thing he does with them, and it's half the con.

Never really realized it was the "autographers" that caused issues until I read your post. Thanks!

The local con I used to be part of had the chairman embezzle most of the con funds, and he had the gall to try to kick me out when I attempted to stage a democratic takeover (which was allowed by the rules that always seemed to change whenever the people in charge or their friends felt it was convenient) of the con at the next board meeting. At the point he basically had no friends there anymore, and was voted out (and I was sidelined, that's another story), but his replacement was an idiot, and under his watch the vice-chair embezzled our treasury a few months later. And for reasons I still don't understand, no one was mad at her, and all attempts to censure her failed. Now she runs the con, and I've long since been persona non grata among the higher echelons of the local anime community.
