How do I stop from giving up at the first thought of actually doing it ? Just thinking about getting all the details right makes me depressed.

I bought a large cosplay jacket online, but its slightly too small. Well, on the inside it has a label that says M 160/88A. Does that mean medium, and they sent me the wrong one, or does it mean something else?
If i end up being stuck with a slightly small jacket, is it hard to edit it to make it bigger?

I made one decent cosplay and am working on my second one. Here are some tips:

>Break down your cosplay into parts. Every costume is a combination of small, simple parts. Realize these are not that difficult to make
>Plot out exactly when you are doing what to your costume. This is super important since sometimes when you finish a part doing another part becomes much harder (if you need to sew under a part you just finished, for instance). Know exactly what steps you need to take to get to the finished result (ex. sew this on first, attach these buttons next, etc) This will save a TON of time in the long run
>Measure twice, cut once. It is nearly always better to have more material than less, since cutting stuff off is easy. Add generous seam allowances if you're worried.
>Learn about how seams work. Remember; most seams are on the inside, so when you sew something it should be inside out. If you want to make a strip of fabric with no seams showing, cut it out slightly bigger, sew around the strip, and then turn it inside out. Tricks like this will make your cosplay look way cleaner. You can turn your t-shirt or hoodie inside out and look at how the seams are laid out there to help you visualize

If you feel overwhelmed and don't feel confident in ypir abilities start with something smaller that you can make inexpensive mistakes on like a skirt, pajama pants, zipper pouches, tote bags etc.

Accept that you will make mistakes and keep a journal of notes on what you learn and observe. I'm so thankful I did this back in my starting days because it took me eons to figure out how to make hakama pants I like and had to make them again recently after 5 years. NAYRT, but depends on what you're looking for. I use EC, Wigisfashion, Arda, and cheap ebay wigs; IMO all the brands I named are good quality wigs that you can make some intense styles with. I think the end result for something like a generic spiky wig would vary very little between them, provided you know what you're doing, but using Arda is just easier for most people, mainly due to their selection of specific styles + colors. WIF doesn't have exact color matches across the board, for example. Also, if you do extreme styling, I think Arda might be better due to the sheer thickness of it, but I definitely don't think that they're the best wigs every single time; if I need a natural looking, long wig I'd never go for Arda; that thickness doesn't look natural in an every-day context and costs more than I'd have to pay for that kinda wig anyway.

Working on my first dress. I'm 5'3", the dress should go down to my ankles, and the sleeves should be about ~6 inches wide.
Other than the sleeves, it's a pretty basic dress. I'm not sure how much fabric I should buy for it though. Eyeballing it I think 4 yards should be enough, but since I've never made a dress before I'd like some input: How much fabric should I buy? Is 4 yards enough?

It's not like it's actually glitter. FAbric like this is usually made with sequin embedded or metallic "fuzz" and as soon as you cut that stuff it gets everywhere. This also makes it weird to sew, especially in patterns like you're showing. Go to a fabric store and just look around. It's better to gauge this kind of stuff in person.

i've looked up ways to do it, but they all seem to take more intermediate-advance levels of craftsmanship, and i'm afraid of getting in over my head.

My advice is to go on YouTube and look up tutorials for your specific machine, that's your best bet since every model is somewhat different. At least build or modify a real steel boned corset first then cover it with materials. You are going to need serious support for those wings. Part of wha makes the corset technique work is tightening the corset and therefore the harness snug against your back. Corset eyelets/grommets will rip out of foam under that kind of stress.

Total noob here, thinking of cosplaying this glorious bastard. Actually wrapping myself in panties (or pantsu-shaped fabric strips as it seems like it would also get expensive ordering a bunch of panties) seems like a nightmare that would take hours on the day of wearing and be liable to self-destruct, so I figured it would be better to put a layer of pantsu shaped cutouts on leggings and an undershirt. Sewing it all together should work, right? I was also thinking that fabric glue might work, but if I put on the shirt/leggings and then start gluing pantsu to myself, will I glue the base layer to myself?

I realize this is probably the simplest shit imaginable, but I've never done anything beyond hand-sewing a few buttons back onto clothes before.

I've seen very young children at cons having a pretty good time and I've seen older children act like total brats. I think it depends on their personalities and the parents/siblings/guardians/whoever's skills at recognizing when they're tuckered out or overwhelmed and are about to cause a scene. As long as they're able to handle hanging out in large crowds of people for long periods of time and aren't going to wander off and get lost and you're not going to get upset if you have to miss any panels/events if they get tired it's okay to bring smaller children.
Obviously this depends on the con too, I wouldn't bring kids somewhere like DragonCon. Use your discretion.

So, something of a weird question. Whats a good way to make a 'cover' for a backpack that doesn't ruin the backpack?

The long version is I have a backpack mounted mater cooling system that circulates water through a vest, because I absolutely love full body cosplays like robots or knights but live in a place where the summers can easily mean walking around in 100+ degree weather with 60% humidity. So the goal is to use the cooling system to wear what I want to wear without dying on the floor.

To that end, I need a way to disguise the backpack. Thats no problem, as the cosplay I and doing is pic related, who clearly has something I can disguise the cooling backpack as. But I'm trying to figure out a way to attach the covering that is both easy to take on and off (I still need to get to the backpack unit to replace the water and charge the batter and whatnot) and won't fall off my back walking around. I'm hoping to be able to re-use this cooling unit in future cosplays too, so I'm trying to avoid gluing the covering directly to the backpack.

Any ideas? The best one I have so far is to glue wooden dowels on the side so I can just slide the covering onto the spokes from above as long as I have a pair of holes to slot into, but I feel like there might be a better way.

First thing to say is cosplay should be fun so just cosplay whatever you want even if you can't "pull it off".

That aside, if you have unusual features or are of an uncommon ethnicity or anything else that can't be changed, you're fucked if you want to do "accurate" cosplays. If it's a matter of body features you CAN change, then it's just a matter of changing them (losing/gaining weight/muscle mass).

It'd only be expensive if you weren't buying in multipacks. It still sounds better for you to get a few yards of white fabric, an underwear pattern & base clothes and attach the different pieces on your base. The glue might not hold up that well and depending on the fabric it could seep thru and get sticky but most likely not..

Sewing it is a safety route.. gluing is the speedy route.

What is the best way to go about doing Cure Whip's pigtails? She has such a large volume in the show, shown here by this costume. I know I don't want to go with just regular ponytail clips, so the ideas I've had so far is:

> Sew 2-3 ponytail clips together, curl them at the bottom similar to how Whip's hair curls.

OR, the more expensive option:

> Literally just clip two entire wigs onto my head with padding on the inside of them to keep that perky shape, and curl them of course at the bottom.

I'm not sure if two more wigs would be way too big/disproportionate to my head or not. What would be the best looking option?

Acryllic sheets folded into distended prisms (either octahedrons or hexahedrons depending on which you prefer), using a heat gun to soften the plastic and then sealing them with superglue/hot glue/soldering iron.

Hang them off your back by utilizing fishing line/wire, and pin the strings to the dress so that they hang in a way which looks like they're floating.

For added effect, you could put use foil paper or glue confetti/glitter to the inside of the prisms to make them look sparkly.

Ezmodo would be to just cut out the flat diamond shapes or to pull nylon over a wireframe for generic fairy wings, but it's really not that hard to do it the better way and make them 3D.

So, I was thinking of getting a sewing machine to get into sewing. I know that it's not something you can cheap out on, but I don't know how much is reasonable to spend on one.
It doesn't have to be amazing, but I want it to be relatively easy to use and handle some different types of fabric, since I want to make cosplays when I feel that I'm good enough

Does anyone have any recommendations? Or maybe just tips about what price to expect, and maybe what qualities to look for?
I do have some experience, I know how to thread a machine and sew basic things, but not really anything more than that

Also, general tips for getting into sewing? Is it worth taking classes? What are some good patterns to get started with/basic essential equipment?

Here's an example of the Nina braided from Arda's flickr. You'll probably have to add wefts to it.

Mind you I'm a tall bearded dude doing this cosplay for the lolz but I need help deciding on a skirt. I have the long white wig and I bought a blue clorox tank top cuz I'm lazy. What color skirt should I buy? As of now it's between red, white, or black. I'm not even going to attempt to match the blue. Mind you I'll also have white thigh highs. https://www.amazon.com/Womens-Versatile-Stretchy-Flared-Skater/dp/B00KZ1BJ5E/ref=sr_1_4?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1516923508&sr=1-4&nodeID=1045022&psd=1&keywords=skirt&th=1&psc=1

well you got the right jacket there so you can just measure it up and create a pattern out of it and use better fabric for it.

just look up youtube videos and such about how to create patterns from existing clothes.

Planning on doing the climbing set from BotW. Any suggestions for the design on the shirt? Should I paint it on or stitch on a different fabric?

There's a screen printed one on etsy but I'm not overly fond of how it looks.

If you want to sweat to death. Make a frame out of cardboard or wire first. Then foam, then fabric.

I would just do
>Ivory pantyhose
>Large fishnet
It's fairly unclear what exactly they're supposed to be from the model alone, but her other similar outfits suggest it actually is just a fishnet overtop of pantyhose. Even if it isn't you'd probably be the only person concerned about the difference. Worst case, try the fabric paint too just to see if it looks any better.

Upholstery foam, beach ball pattern. Then use that same pattern for the fabric, sewing the pieces together with the Henson Stitch for a relatively seamless look.

Alternatively, you could do what the other anon said and make a base out of wire, then cover it with batting. At this point you’d have to make a masking tape pattern from the orange so that you could get the patterns for the fabric.

You’re essentially making a mascot suit, albeit a simple spherical one. Some more reference material:

I'm going to be 5 months pregnant for my next con and my friends want to do an Overwatch group cosplay. So far the following heroes are taken:
- Roadhog
- Ana
- Torbjorn
- Genji
- Soldier 76
- Junkrat

Who should I cosplay? Please help friends. Reminder I am pregnant so I can't handle overbearing cosplays that would completely cover me up (e.g Bastion or Winston). I have tried to be creative and not stick to solely heroes but I'm a bit stumped. I have brown hair so I considered Mei but wondered who else I could be as I'm not very invested in her right now.

What would be a good wig base for a Naked Snake? So far I'm looking at three options:
>mullet
obvious choice, but usually the top is overly styled (curly, parted, etc) and the back isn't layered like Snake's shaggier look
>Joan Jett style
Cut is similar, but it looks like there's too much volume on the top and too thin at the base.
>standard straight shoulder-length female wig
Simplest and not pre-styled so easier to work with but I have very little practice with hairstyling so I might could fuck it up

Depends on the complexity of the holster, quality of the leather and fittings.

Never played monster hunter and its fun as fuck. That aside Im trying ti figure out what the best way to paint bone like texture on foam would be.

Horns and helmet seem easy enough, but I remember a few people talking about using tooth paste or mustard on different layers and peeling them off to give a chipped/worn look. Any other recommendations?

You should be able to get that made, somewhat cheaply.

Belt will add expense, but I would expect $300 because of how simple the design is.
The one from Cosplay House looks like shit, it's not fitted for a gun correctly, and looks like it's made out of cheap PVC - honestly reminds me of an elephant vag.

110-160 is a good range for baby's first sewing machine that isn't a piece of shit. Basic Brothers are better than the basic Singers.

Check your local Craigslist for vintage (1970 and earlier) machines, of any brand, you can get them cheap from people cleaning out dead grandma's shit and they're powerhouses.

Er, this might be more complicated than you wished for. You're going to want a lacefront/fake hairline for his right side. For the ponytail, it's luckily a low one. There are a few tutorials you can google to make sure the netting doesn't show. There are also a bunch of tutorials on google for these kind of light spikes (basically just trimming + hairspray).
