Either don't or go all out - learn how to do makeup that would suit your face, get some padding, train to walk and move like a woman. Invest in good wigs and shoes you'll be comfortable in (heels are a bitch, I'm a woman and I loathe them, so prepare yourself).
Also choose characters to cosplay that have a somewhat similar body type to yours, if you're 6 ft tall don't try cosplaying middle schoolers.

I like the recommendation to increase the heel height in increments rather than throwing on a pair of stilettos right away, and also the tips on choosing a shoe with a comfortable pitch.
From my own experience, when trying on heels at the store, check that you're comfortable just standing them, bc if you feel like your foot is all strained and hurting just from standing, you sure won't be comfortable walking. If I put on heels and feel that my weight is placed uncomfortably and my feet are arching like crazy - that's an immediate no thank you from me.
If you're a total beginner, forget about stilettos for a while and stick to chunky heels and wedges, they're MUCH more comfortable and less likely to cause trauma.

If you want to look feminine, it’s going to take a LOT more practice than something you just bust out the day of the con. Makeup in particular and learning to contour your face is something I suggest you get daily practice at for at least a month.

To be honest, if you aren’t crossplaying because you want to try out a feminine identity, then it takes too much effort to try and feminize male features to be worth it. Just own your manliness or do a male version of the character.
