Actually, not at all. The primary function of a good judge is being a judge. They had a bunch of famous people last year and it rained complains because the judges couldn't even get up out of their chair to check out costumes up close. What they need this year is to fix that and find some judges that will put some effort into it and know what they're doing outside of their very specific niche.

If a judge sits there like a sac of potatoes its the crews job to tell them its not expected behavior.
Point is cool judges make people want to compete. Know judges have the disadvantage that they have friends in the dutch cosplay community. I know Mizuki is friends with Taeyong. So are some of the other people that participate every year.
If you want to keep the "onpartijdigheid" then you need to have atleast 50% new judges.
Also Kamui and Yaya are great judges because they see the "marketable" side of cosplay and that is a different way of judging than "this could win compo X"

Depends on your standards I suppose. When I met her she was wearing a dress that might have been from a lolita brand, but if I'd seen her on the street rather than at a lolita meetup I would never have clocked it as an attempt at a lolita outfit. It was like someone tried to wear an old prom dress casually by coording it with basics from H&M.

Even when you instruct your judges on how to rate costumes, there is no guarantee they will actually do as told. Some people are lazy or simply not as professional as they like to make people believe. Besides I can already think of a few Dutch cosplayers with some judging experience who wouldn't mind letting personal matters affect their judging. Whether this is going easy on friends or granting lower scores on those they dislike is up to you. For this reason alone I would refrain from having any judges from your own community.

Then to both, there are tons of reasons about a convention on a Bungalow park/swimming pool that will make it a succes. Its all whats needed to convince me. That part seemed obvious to me.

So its not like my reason is a bullshit convention like tomofair. Which offers absolutely nothing new.

The evetn doesnt even need any management just gettign together with a large groups of cosplayers is enough for me. This park makes it tons better then other locations.

In the event that you're actually being serious; sorry, but I only preach realistic thinking. Being positive and having dreams is nice, but one should never lose themselves in them. I can respect the Viencon staff for being motivated and actually trying, but that doesn't mean I should blindly support them along the way. I'd rather be salty as you keep calling me than a hopeless dreamer.

The simple fact is Anon, Viencon already had a failed attempt at hosting a convention. Instead of evaluating and learning a thing or two about the why it went wrong last time, they've decided to ignore it all and to do the same thing once more, all while expecting things to be different somehow. In terms of finances they struggling because they are relying on ticket sales, which to most conventions is just a nice bonus they wont really see until a few months before the con. Simply put, dealers rooms and sponsors are where the real money is to be made and Viencon seems to have neither. Then there's how they claim to need at least 1250 visitors to even make Viencon happen in the first place. For a newcomer on the scene, without any reputation, this is just madness. All cons start small and expend only once the demand is there. Instead here they are hoping to somehow pull off a cosplay and photography con with +1250 people during their first edition. I can tell you already, that's not going to happen. Hell, just look at the reach of their Facebook posts: 24 entire likes on their swan song post. If that doesn't open your eyes nothing will.

But I agree that they haven't planned it out well. I don't think they'll meet the target, because they started way too late with promoting to reach that target. I saw a post from Dokomi, which I guess was a good idea to get some foreign visitors, but I don't think any of them is going to book right away. Most people need a bit of thinking time with these things (and just 4 days of thinking time isn't enough). And I agree with you, sponsors were a better choice to focus on than visitors anyway. Yeah, the bungalow is a plus. However, I do think you have to reconsider about the price. It may seem cheap for you, but not everyone has the money laying around. Especially not if you don't want to stay in a 8-person cabin with strangers or loud people who will probably want to drink and party. They are posting more stuff... today. before that only a few competitions were announced. Gamerooms are easy to fix and most of those suck. The only good gameroom is at Animecon at this moment. I go to a convention for the fun and activities, not to go to a bungalow park. I'd want to cosplay and walk around and do things related to my hobby. The swimming pool and shitty arcade are just a plus for photography.

Please stop trying to get the people on here to praise viencon for things they didn't do yet.

>>9714186
We're not fishing for things that make it go wrong. It is perfectly logical to doubt if this con will ever take off as the staff has been over confident and lacking in certain aspects. A location of a con shouldn't be the main, and at the moment the only, reason to go to a convention.

>> No.9714251

As a new lolita (still building my first coord), mods who are well-known by the community are far more intimidating. It's a big community of a niche hobby, they are practically e-famous. I really don't understand the people who don't bring up issues if they haven't met the moderator beforehand. They expect the mods to be like Misako or something. I wonder what they do if someone mistreats them on LM or CoF. But I'm so shy I can't even comment on that post.

>> No.9714279

>>9714251
I think you are confusing being well-known with being approachable. People are asking for moderators they have actually spoken to at a meet up. That they don't need to introduce themselves to in a message on Facebook when they have an issue. One that they can not only approach at meet up but one that approaches them at a meet up even just to introduce themselves and say hi. Some of the more approachable lolitas don't even have Instagram and aren't well know by other comms or people online.

>> No.9714288

Except for one girl in the comm, practically no one in the Dutch Lolita comm is e-famous. Besides they don’t want a mods to be e-famous or anything, they just want a mod that they can know personally. Someone who shows up at meets, etc. Instead of a stranger they don’t know, who gives off a feeling of unreachability.
Also I think it’s a bit weird that you can’t understand the people who don’t dare to bring up issues to mods, when you are also to shy to react to the post yourself. Maybe those people are also to shy to contact a stranger (the mod)?

>> No.9714323

You don't think it's weird for an active member to have never interacted with any of the moderators? Or for the moderators to have barely interacted with the community to the point where no one has heard of them? A lot of people in these threads stated that they have only met two of them. If any of those people would have had an issue they most likely messaged the two of moderators the knew and not the three people they had never met. I don't think the next moderator needs to know literally everyone and vice versa but ideally every member in our comm that is active should encountered and interacted with at least one moderator.

Most people will have met those two (now one) that are active, but it’s not right that all the community liaison stuff is pushed onto two (now one) people because the other three can’t be bothered to show up. This disproportionate responsibility was probably part of why the one girl left even if she won’t come out and say it. She was working harder than she should have if the mod team was balanced.

Well if it's a cheap commitment, why don't you pay for my poor students ass?

Seriously, how out of touch with reality are you? Just because it's relatively cheap doesn't make the equal price cheap.
With that logic I would live in a château in French, because €835.000 for 415m2 of living space and8ha of land is cheap.

Large part of the community are students who already have to split their money between books/materials, tuition fee and cosplay (not even speaking about rent and the likes).
Unless you have parents who (can) give more money than the average parent, 100 euro's is not cheap. Maybe doable, but not cheap.

I understand your reasoning. Honestly this event is lacking what the big succesful events have like animecon. But this concepts potential is really high. But the managements execution makes me.think they didnt think thrrough enough. But still if it doesnt take off now and doesnt get support it might be a long time or never before another concept like this can be launched. Adding activities isnt hard but its not in the starting budget. But that doesnt mean its not planned for the future. For now they are spending more money on this than receiving. And if a starting con gets compared to big ones and then shot down it doesnt seem fair to use those comparisons. No event has a program this far ahead like someone already said on fb. So yes management did fail this event and yes it lacks a program for now making it less attractive. I still think this thing can grow. And so far ahead can be influenced by people like you. Maybe a convention to be build by cosplayers. I know that the management ask alot of questions about what people wanr for this event but rarely make big auggestions to ask the community. So yes I understand why you wouldnt pledge for this event. But at least you should understand why I pledge. I believe this can be great. I will most certainly be one of the people gicing feedback to the management later. Even if it fails. Im just thinking this can become like colossalcon or Aqualandia in NL. It has potential.

They started it themselves with mentioning 'colossalcon'

Truth is though; I'd love to see such a concept. But as I said earlier; they should've started smaller. A single day event would've worked much better. Animecon didn't start out the way it did now either. Their first edition had between 200 and 300 visitors, as mentioned in the previous thread.

Shoot for the stars by all means, but make it realistic.

Well Colossalcon doesnt have much programs. They enjoy everything the resort has as activities. Which is ofc over the top: A small zoo and a seriously awesome arcade hall, their own robot arena. etc. So well they dont need much programming. But that location is ofc superb compared to CentreParcs XD One day test run would have been a good first step. But I guess centre parcs wouldnt want that. Or they would make it expensive for a one day evetn like that other park wanted last time. but I guess people would want to pay more for a one day event than being forced to pay for 3 days and an accomodation.

Its like pathe that hires cosplayers, most people think the pathe owner knows, he doesnt neitehr do the other pathe know one hires cosplay, they dotn need that kind of apporval, all of them manage and fix small events themselves. Yes, ofc there are rules for the entire company but as long as those are being enforced there is space for filiaalmanager to do his own thing. >Nishicon will mostly be visited by older members of the community with more money to spend. However judging by last year and how little people on FB are going or even interested in Nishicon I fear it’s going to be wasteland just like last year.
>Tomo charges good money for a stand meaning dealers have to sell more to break even. Dealers who mostly sell affordable mainstream stuff and snacks/candy will attend Tomo as they typically do good business there.
>Nishicon charges very little for a stand making it easier to break even. However Nishi’s low visitor numbers makes having a stand there a risk. Dealers who sell more expensive, specialized or handmade items will likely be at Nishicon.
So far for my predictions for both events. Also Kaomoji already announced they’ll be at Nishi back during the Tomo vs Nishicon fight so that's something.

There are some people seriously emotionally invested in a "flop of a con that I wouldn't support anyway"
I mean how they filled the cottages isn't that much of a big deal as long as they did it and didn't have to cancel right. They still have a ways to go and it's more fun to just look how they'll manage rather than get so upset they didn't flop before the first deadline....

Yeah I call bullshit myself. 3 hours ago they edited this comment stating they still need 21 more bookings. There's no way they actually received those in that 3 hour time span. I just hope they aren't taking any risks just to show others how wrong they have been.

>>9715931
>>9715884
>>9715866
Oh fuck off already. Just because people are passionate about something doesn't mean they shouldn't be criticized. In case you haven't noticed, a large portion of this thread has been nothing but crystal clear feedback on what Viencon needs to work on ASAP in order to not only make their con happen, but to make it a success. Instead of taking these observations so damned personally one could also be thankful and utilize them to improve things for the better. Can';t handle that? Then by all means leave and don't return until you've grown up. God, I do hope the Viencon staff are better than you...

>> No.9715972

>>9715960
Sure I mean it's a good thing to criticizer something without giving it any space to grow successful. They succeed, you're not satisfied, they fail you're not satisfied. You get to make memes of a major setback and then you're mad because you're called childish for it. ;)
I mean i'm not saying you're the one that actively enjoys them failing and actively feel disappointed when things look a little brighter but this is a discussion. it doesn't mean we only have to point out flaws and call it feedback. I agree with feedback that will actually improve their situation but i don't enjoy putting viencon on a convention calender with the title: cancelled once more.

Oh I'm not mad. If anything I'm laughing quite hard right now at how serious you are taking these things. Are you really that upset about a silly little joke on a convention agenda that barely anyone even knows exists? Learn to lighten up love, not everything on the internet needs to be taken so damned seriously.

Like I’ve said before in a lengthy post >>9713979, I sincerely respect the Viencon staff for being motivated and actually trying to pull off a convention. That’s way more than you can say about most people within the Dutch community, whose ideas typically don't make it past launching a Facebook page. And allow me to make one thing perfectly clear; this isn’t a personal matter. This is about my views on Viencon as a convention and an organisation, not the individuals who run it. I know some people have trouble separating the two, so I’m just putting it out there to make sure everyone understands this.

Now believe it or not, I really want to believe Viencon will succeed. The Dutch convention scene is ripe for a new player and it’s rare to see a group of people dedicated enough to try, let alone a group with a fresh concept like this. However, seeing them making the same mistakes as last time makes this a very difficult thing for me to do. So, understandably, when the topic of Viencon is brought up, I will not hesitate to share my somewhat negative views, no matter how much I can respect them for trying. That’s simply the kind of person I am; blunt, yet honest.

And yes, like many others I too didn’t expect Viencon to hit their self-proposed booking target. Considering I was adding the 2018 conventions to the agenda I figured why not have some fun to break all the seriousness. Now, considering you care so much, why not join the Viencon staff? I believe this thread alone has provided you with enough pointers to make it so all of us can believe Viencon will be a success.

Dunno how well this translates into dealer sales, but as an artist my experience is that tomofair does MUCH better than nishicon. I do well at tomo while I know people had trouble even breaking even at nishi last year. People go to tomo expecting a market, so even if people are kinda cheap they're willing to spend some money. Meanwhile, nishi's artist alley was stuck in a bad place with no promo at a con with plenty other stuff to do.

As for tomo being expensive to table at: nishi tables are dirt cheap but you still pay the regular entrance fee, so it ends up costing more. And most people need sleeping accommodation for nishi while tomo is only one day (for now).

I really hope nishi can improve from last year, anyway. I want to see them succeed.
