Okay CGL, I would like to request some tips and advice!

I'm doing Rose Quartz this year and it will be my first proper cosplay. Due to my limited sewing skills I'm buying a corset and making a skirt for it - I'd rather be a bit inaccurate and look properly finished than accurate in shape but with bad craftsmanship.

Basically, if anyone has any general tips for doing Rose well or pics of their favourite Rose cosplays that would help a cosplay newbie out a lot.

Uh, okay anon. You're right on needing a corset; Rose Quartz wears a strapless dress that needs support, and wearing a corset both provides said support and creates a smooth sillouette. However, I think you shouldn't doubt your sewing skills and "default" to a two piece option that in the end won't look right at all.

There are patterns that you can follow and alter for your cosplay. Specifically, McCall's 7281 has a strapless sweetheart bodice (they are also having a sale on their website right now) that can be easily added to any skirt option. I have this particular pattern and they show you exactly how to put in supportive boning; it's very simple. You're also going to need a hoop skirt. You can get a cheap on on Amazon or do what I did and get a good quality one from a bridal shop on ebay for around $30, shipping included. As for the skirt itself, to me it looks like a circle skirt with tiers, which you could probably do by just cutting the main pattern for the underskirt shorter and shorter as you go up. The star can probably be made with a skin tone fabric and sewn on, so as to not disturb the dress's structure.

There are many tutorials online for rose quartz specifically and adding boning to dresses, circle skirts, etc. Please don't sell yourself short on your skills. Think of it as a way to challenge yourself so you can do an even more complex cosplay next year.
