said, tapestries, rugs, even heavy blankets can work, if your parents are cool they might let you put up some of those adhesive acoustic panels in the corridor, theyre great at dampening sound.

Oh and furniture, seems weird i know but compare the echo in an empty room to a full one, something like some shelves or a side table might help but this option can be limited by the amount of space in the corridor.

maybe hanging some pictures with bulky frames might help as well.

Embrace it. If you have nice black furniture, the white will make it pop rather than risk losing the detail in a sea of the same color. I would avoid having that many colors, even traditionally goth ones like purple/red. If you really want to hide it, I can't think of anything more than big rugs and lots of wall art

Regarding rented places, I think if you're bringing your own furniture and have things you like to display a decent tall storage unit/display shelf (e.g. like a drinks cabinet/bar unit/sideboard with the glass fronted bit at the top and cabinet at the bottom) is always good if you can find one that dismantles enough not to need a moving truck every time.

Anyone have inspo for some Kawaii/chic workstations or craft areas? I'm redoing my whole room right now and I'd like to get some idea of what to do with my cluttered desk to make it look more organized.

I love these threads, but they always make me kinda sad
I've pretty much given up on having a nice apartment, because my boyfriend is such a huge slob. Also, he doesn't care whatsoever about how things look, so he doesn't want to spend anything on furniture and such to make things look nicer, because he thinks it's a waste of money
He also has so much stuff, like 20+ random figurines and stuff that he wants to keep up at all time, but he doesn't have a good place for them, so he has put all of them on top of one of our shelves, and it looks so messy.

Not really contributing to the thread, but I just felt like ranting because it just sucks to not be able to have a nice clean space to live in

Jumping on this, the best advice I've gotten is to go for mid-range paint. Don't get the cheapest in the store (poor quality) or the most expensive (paying for the name, not the paint). Something in the middle is usually good.

Consider getting him a nice display space second hand or from a cheaper store like Ikea. Then offer to arrange them for him if he doesn't want to on his own. Let him know you aren't mad at him for having stuff he likes, but having a space that isn't cluttered is important to you.

Not looking for inspo or anything, but kinda got a problem.

I've noticed a strong "dusty" smell coming from my dresser. It seems to be strongest in the drawer where I keep my shirts. The smell seems to have transferred onto the shirts from the dresser, because I washed them all and after a couple of days the shirts seem to have absorbed the smell. Someone suggested for me to put in charcoal, which I did, but it doesn't seem to help.

It's really annoying cause I start coughing because the smell irritates my throat for some reason. I think it's mildew or something, but how can I know for sure?

Also, I've tried cleaning it with a clorox spray and left it to air out, which seemed to work for a short time. But the smell came back eventually.

So I recently moved to this different house which my family is renting. Can't paint the walls or anything.

Three walls in my room are an offwhite/cream color. The fourth wall is covered in wallpaper - it's a floral with teals and really light pinks and yellows. It's really nice for a classic lolita.

Except I'm a gothic one.

I can't think of any way to work around that wallpaper! And it covered an entire wall, it's not like it's just a small portion. I feel like my gothic stuff is going to look pretty jagged against it.

Should I just suck it up and decorate anyways? I guess I could make a corner of my room fit for taking pics so the rest isn't seen, but I just don't know...

Backing up the other Anon....
Get him a DETOLF shelf. They are great for showing off figures, You can even buy LEDs for them to light them up all cool.

It might also be time for a slob zone since it's damn hard to teach a full grown man that he's in the wrong for having the cleanliness of an 8 yr old. Let him know he can be as messy as he wants....IN ONE ROOM.
If he wants to pile up clothes, sure...only in the bedroom. If he wants to leave a trail of projects, fine, only in the bedroom.
Just pick a room you can close off.

And I'm not trying to be evil here but if he can't seem to remember....after a month, that stuff mysteriously disappears. If you want to be kind, put it in a storage bin and don't tell him. Just put a lid on it and put it in the closet. If he hasn't asked for it in a year, to charity it goes.

If you like this idea you could always make it a fluffy removeable chair cover. Throw it in the washing machine once every other week or so and it'll look good for quite a long time, unless you spill something that stains on it (and even then, you could always try and see if bleach will lift the stain before throwing it out).

I use a white fleece throw on my own chair, it gets washed every few weeks and still looks good. The key is just to use something that you can easily wash to keep it clean.

Can somebody have a look at my room plan and give me suggestions for how I could move things around? It's a really big room but I never feel like I'm making good use of the space - I'm a student and my apartment has no communal areas except the tiny kitchen, so basically my entire life is in this one room. All the furniture in the diagram is exactly to scale.

Most of all I'd like an area where I could take photos but as it is 90% of the walls are covered in furniture, or don't have enough floor space free in front of them for photos. It's a pretty big room (6.9sqm, so 74sqft) but only has one small window and a single bulb lighting it, so the corners with free wall space are too dark and/or have ugly plug sockets and light switches. I can't use the wardrobes as a backdrop because they're too short, or the doors because (even if I take all the stuff hanging on them off) they're in dark corners.

(kinda obvious) restrictions on where I can put stuff:
>can't block boiler door because I need to get in that cupboard to adjust the heating)
>can't block radiator with large furniture, obviously (desk is okay because it has no back)
>can't put deep furniture in front of the window because the window's pretty deeply recessed and I wouldn't be able to reach to open it
>desk must be near a plug socket (I have a desktop) and ideally near a radiator because the room is fucking freezing (definitely not on external walls)
>room is a rental and was repainted before we moved in so I can't nail/glue anything to the walls
>storing a lot of stuff in boxes under the bed so prefer not to put it up against the wall as that'd make it hard to get stuff out

>> No.9708698

>>9708676
Get softboxes or floor lamps. Afterwards you can probably use the wall between your door and your desk and jut photoshop out the switches/sockets. Put the tripod on your bed.

Also I might be dumb at reading graphs, but where is your radiator?

Maybe I'm being captain obvious, but have you thought of lofting your bed against the wall at all then using the top of a tall shelf as the bedside? Looks like the shelf, drawers and bedside table are similar heights and it isn't too hard to get other shelves that can support the weight, giving you more layers of storage so you can access it all from one side...

The radiator's the thing on the wall behind the desk.

I've tried taking photos in that area before by using lamps and it's generally just not a great space (I do really want a softbox though). There's nowhere you can stand at the right distance for photos so you have to put lights and camera on the bed, which is pretty wobbly. Is there some special trick to using a tripod on the bed, or is your mattress just firmer than mine?

I looked at the diagram with my flatmate and we just moved stuff like pic related (plus did some general tidying). It took a while to sort out the shelves because they were together as an L-shaped unit and needed rebuilding to fit on the other side of the window, but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out and there's still enough clearance to get my arm in the cupboard and turn the heating on and off. If I sell enough stuff I should be able to get rid of the clothes rail, and I can use the wall where it is for photos or a full-length mirror (I can still move it if necessary). Downside is a lot more ugly industrial carpet is visible now.

>>9708737
It's not obvious at all! I don't know anyone with a loft bed in this area so it would never have ocurred to me. I think that'd be difficult/dangerous to do in this room, because the floorboards under the carpet are sunk in the middle and higher at the edges in places, which creates a noticeable lean for stuff right up against some walls. Plus I'm renting privately and might be forced to move when my contract's up for renewal so it's a risky expense.

My SO and I are compromising as we're saving up to move into our own place. I thought about having a cute room but was worried about bothering him, so we decided on a woodland/forest themed room which would be easy to relax in and I can get my fix of pastel greens. It also means I can get thrifty and DIY my own decor and go to down with deer motifs.

Because we're both avid gamers and watch a lot of anime we'll be having a joint nerd cave but again, it'll be somewhere in the middle and we'll have our figures in display cases and nerdy stuff in there away from the living room so visitors don't have to cop an eyeful. There's so many ever so slightly suggestive figures I've passed up on over the years because I felt like I wasn't able to display them without getting questions. It's bad enough when people look up the skirts to see if they're wearing underwear!

Hopefully we'll be able to shoot for a sewing room where I keep all of my cosplay and craft things where I basically go to town with displaying some of my magical girl pieces. He helps me in constructing our costumes but it'll mostly be me in there having to stare at everything for hours on end so I get priority.

All in all we both okay everything before we purchase or try to save money by getting me to make things if that's possible. But it's definitely so much easier when they're laid back and trust you with your tastes.

Sorry for the late reply. You could try something like curtains or nice fabric on the wall. Maybe frame a picture with them or thrift some cool curtains and dye them black. It is easy to do with minimal damage if any.

So I'm stuck here for a while longer, gonna be moving maybe in January but I'm so tired of how this place is rn
I keep thinking of rearranging the furniture, dumping the shit couch and moving the bed by the TV, and having the corner where the bed is house or desks in stead.
But idk if that would crowd the room way more or not, being rid of the couch would be nice but I still want the TV to be usable.
Any ideas guys?
Obviously desks can only be near outlets and some things I won't be moving (like the big dresser)

You need to clean the entire dresser, including the interior of the dresser after removing the drawers. It's not just the one drawer that's affected.

I can only imagine how nasty that smells with all that fabric catching errant spraying and kicked up litter. It looks nice, but I'm not sure how practical this is.

Looks like your room is about 182sqft, a very generous size. I was astounded when you said it was about 74sqft and I saw everything you had in there! I'm sorry that I don't have any advice, but I really like the way you showed your room's layout; would you mind sharing what program you used to set it up?

>Looks like your room is about 182sqft, a very generous size. I was astounded when you said it was about 74sqft and I saw everything you had in there!
Yeah, I just realised I made a typo (it's 16.9sqm, not 6.9). It is massive, it's pretty bad because I ended up expanding to fit the space available and now it's impossible for me to store stuff at home over the summer because it won't physically fit in my 6'x8' childhood room.

I Googled "room design programme" and used the first thing I could get a top-down layout with, this:
http://www.planyourroom.com/
The features are pretty limited and I'm not used to working in feet and inches (which is why I didn't notice the mistake in the conversion), so when I'd put all the furniture in to scale I print-screened it and did some more editing in Paint.

How big's your apartment? Would having your bed near the open-plan kitchen risk getting food odours in your bedding and mattress? Could someone potentially look in through the keyhole or letterbox from the hallway and see you in the bed if you put it there?

I don’t think this is a litter box - I think it might be a bed. Anyone with a cat knows better than to put fabric around their bathroom, and cleaning that would be a major issue. So I’m pretty sure this is a fancy cat bed.

Nah mate lots of litter boxes have curtains to hide them. They are easy to hand wash and air out or simply replace after a certain point in time. Unless your cat is autistic and sprays all over the litter it really shouldn't be a problem. Some also have plastic covers inside the curtained area.

It's not an apartment, it's like a uh... "in-law suite" I guess you could call it.
Anyway it's a house, on it's own property.

I think the fan system is okay enough where the odors won't get too bad, and if they do they'd reach the bed regardless.
It's probably around ~200sqft (including the bathroom)

I have a 345 square feet apartment I've been living at for a year used to live in a 150ft2 room for 3 years but it's really hard to get a house over here, every one within my budget has a 6/7 year waiting list. I'm not allowed to put anything on the walls and because I want to change the style of my room massively I have this modern light wood with silver big furniture. I love seeing threads like this, but it makes me sad I have to wait for so many more years to be able to get a bigger place to put fancy looking furniture in.

Incase you're wondering what the pink thing is, I'd go for a fake wall behind your bed, you could either get a room devider and close off the back that faces your bed, so you do have the space in the front and on top, or create a fake wall by draping fabric down the ceiling

currently living in my room at home with cosplay shit in the attic. Thinking of buying a big ass ikea display cabinet, moving all the collectibles to it, moving it to where my bed is now, then moving my bed inbetween the windows.

my problem is I need a spot to put my dresser, bookshelf, and desk. I'm thinking maybe the desk next to the collectibles cabinet? But then I need to shift my dresser in a place that doesn't cover a window.

Rearranging my room is a pain because one whole wall is closet so I can't put anything there

Your room needs help anon. Like nuke it and start over again. If one whole wall is a closet I would try to place the bed adjacent to it, leaving a small walkway between the bed and the closet doors. Use a nightstand or something to judge how big the space should be. It seems like you have a coffee table as a display shelf? Try placing that sort of stuff in the middle of the room and not just circling your walls with furniture. Your closet sounds like it should be big, put the dresser inside as other anon suggested to clear up some space.

I might actually be able to fit the dresser in a closet, good call.

I know the room is a mess, I downsized from college apartment to a single room a few years back and never really got everything out of the "transition" phase. Too much stuff not enough room for it basically. You can't see it in the photo but the closets are filled with boxes of con shit and old apartment stuff. Good times.

Furniture is mismatched but gonna have to work with it for now, budget constraints and the desk/dresser/bed are a Mom hand-me-down set that are really not practical but ones I'm very fond of. If I were to get a display cabinet I'd eliminate the coffee table shelving abomination along with the DVD shelves holding amiibo. I'm not opposed to a different/more practical bookcase either.

ETA for moving in somewhere with bf wouldn't be for at least a year or two due to budget constraints(long distance atm) so doing a thorough cleanout and throwing away/selling what I can would be a really good idea. The whole thing intimidates the hell out of me though.

If you're fond of those pieces then roll with it and find stuff to match those on Craigslist or offer up. Ikea is not as much of a godsend as some people make it out to be. Don't plan on anything big from ikea lasting more than two moves.

Just from personal experience I started swapping my ikea collection out for vintage 1940's stuff and it was a great decision. Everything is sturdy and the craftsmanship is beautiful. Only downside is how long it can take to find a piece that you like that doesn't break the budget.

Hmm... this helps me understand your room's setup much better. Thank you for including the layout. I thought at first that your jewelry chest was your dresser. You may want to see if you can fit that in your closet, too.

Is your dresser included in the first photo? I thought it was and that you had a monitor set up on it, but is that actually your desk?

I have some suggestions, but first a few questions for you.

What is your goal for posting here? Are you looking for advice on making a more efficient layout or for making your room look nicer? Is there anything about the current layout that you don't like?

I would definitely suggest donating or selling your housewares if they're cheaply made or easily replaceable if it's gong to be years before you move again. This will clear up space for you now.

A coat of paint can really make a mismatched jumble of furniture go together much more cohesively. Is this something you may consider?

If you're not in love with your rugs, I'd highly recommend buying some new ones. Rugsusa.com is a good source, as are discount stores such as Ollie's.

Food for thought: if you have stuff on the floor you obviously don't value it enough to treat it well or put it away. Consider getting rid of it or finding a place for it.

If you're ready to let things go, I highly recommend selling through OfferUp or LetGo. I prefer OfferUp, but it really just depends on your area as to which moves more.

Reading The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo helped me get rid of things, but it seems very hit or miss for people. If you're curious, you may read it here: http://www.bestfree-book.net/Other/The_Life-Changing_Magic_of_Tidying_Up.html

NYART but re-reading that (even though every re-read makes me more convinced Marie Kondo is literally autistic) has really made me want to go on a decluttering marathon. There's so much lolita stuff I want to trade up or sell but it's such a long process it's overwhelming to even start because I know I won't see the back of all the items for months. Don't even have another room I can move them to to get them out of sight out of mind - at first it was refreshing to get stuff out of my wardrobe and onto a sale pile, but now I'm sick of looking at the pile.

I used to not get why people sold to stores like CC for so little when they could handle the sales themselves and make more money, but at this point I'd do it in a heartbeat if there was a Closet Child here. I can't bear to dump all my stuff at a normie thrift store for nothing but the convenience would be worth it if I even got 40% of the value back upfront.

Here's my two cents. Get rid of your coffee table, replace it with some bookshelves, highlighted in red. (Walmart has some big ones in wood and white for like $30) Bookshelves will give you more vertical storage space over the horizontal. Moving your bed between the windows will give you better usable space for the wall it's currently on. You'll still have access to your closet and other shelves just fine.

Agreed. I have no doubt that she's autistic. The little snippets of her life she includes in her book are a bit disturbing and sad. I'm very glad for her (and her family omg) that she's found success.

First photo shows the desk and not the dresser. Dresser is slightly longer but still may fit in a closet, they're pretty wide.

I posted mostly for rearranging advice but I am definitely open to ideas for rearranging/decluttering. I wouldn't really consider myself a hoarder because I'm perfectly able to get rid of stuff, I'm just super lazy and years of not giving a fuck/depression have taken its toll lol. Definitely. I'm not sure about the jewelry chest as it's an antique but a coat of white on the bookshelf to match the set would be a really easy thing to do

>if you have stuff on the floor you obviously don't value it enough to treat it well or put it away. Consider getting rid of it or finding a place for it.
