Some of these are low quality images because they’re so old (and Japan loves flip phones), but that was the golden age of identical or near identical matching.

Incongruous twins piss me off. Different color ways is fine, but I hate something like one girl wears boots and the other wears teaparties.

I love twinning but I've never done it.

I'm curious how the coording process usually goes and how you pick out pieces together with a friend.
Do you decide on a budget together?
Do you find that you usually need a bigger budget for twinning rather than simply making your own coord?
Do your tastes ever clash?

Commonly the process is simply,

>we own the same dress!
>let's twin!
and then they just kind of make decent outfits and wear the same dress together.

Personally I like to go from start to end. Order a dress and all the accesories with someone (this often requires buying new, and it's usually easiest with something like a fullset from AP or BABY for example).

Budget? what's that lol
For real it would be easy if you already had the dresses and just used simple accessories like plain shoes, tights, etc etc.

You don't need more money to twin but again it's easier to just use different colorways of a fullset.

I've only twinned a handful of times because I'm so picky but if someone doesn't like the idea of being so precise, I'm not gonna twin with them.

When you and another lolita wear the same main piece in different colorways, styled similarly, or the same main piece in same colorway but have other differences. You may have slightly different accessories, hairstyles, etc.

You and your lolita friend wear the exact same main piece in the same color, wear the same wig with the same hairstyle, same shoes, legwear, etc.

Basically twinning is "eh, close enough" and cloning is "no, we must be mirror images."

My friend and I twin a lot because we seem to have similar tastes. Usually, we try to go the cheapest route and coord around things we already have. If we don't and only one person owns said item, the other just buys it. The most expensive part of our twinning coords have been our matching shoes.
