Just yesterday I was browsing Y!JA for merch but most is incredibly expensive.
"Thankfully" I decided to keep my bag just HiGH&LOW themed so it's a bit easier but I wanted to include a few items for a few members and the merch pricing hurt so I let it be for now (one day, Takahiro </3). Unfortunately you might have to break the bank. I saw plenty stuff at Y!JA and Otamart tho if you want to take a look, maybe if you spend a bit more time combing through maybe you'll find cheaper items or bundles.

Do you guys sometimes regret your itabag? Not just money-wise, but just like..."shit, why do I even have this?" kind of feeling. Don't get me wrong, I still love my husbando and I'm very proud of my itabag, but sometimes I just stare at it and think, "damn, this was a lot of money that could have been spent on something more useful" and then have some serious moments of self doubt.
And then I buy more shit for it because I NEED IT and I LOVE HIM. And then fall into the cycle all over again.
I guess I feel this way sometimes because I don't feel like it's actually necessary for me to have an itabag to be able to fully express my love for my boy lmao. *sigh*

On the other hand, I do have a shit ton of YOI stuff that I actually, really regret now that the fad has died off lol and don't even want to construct a bag for it anymore.

Earlier this year I had a quiet moment where I realized that 1) I had been actually, literally in love with a fictional character. and 2) I wasn't anymore. But even if I'm not unhealthily in love with him, I still adore him as a well written character, and collecting all the art that I have makes me feel happy. And, honestly, I'm absolutely one who gets into things for the bragging rights, so it feels nice to have a bag that people will ooh and ahh over.

I think a lot of people really loved Yuri On Ice. I regret getting all the merchandise I did because I realized that I really love Yuri On Ice as a story. I'm not obsessed with any of the characters in particular, it's just a beautifully made show. I watched it beginning to end again with a friend over the summer, and it was just as good as I remembered.

But what this has taught me is that love for something isn't enough to make the itabag experience fun. It's got to be a very specific love, with a lasering obsessive focus on a single target.

Yuri on Ice was a fantastic and heartfelt story about one depressed and one anxious man who found stability in eachother, that didn't stop being an entertaining and dramatic sports anime just because the main characters were gay for each other. It had a fantastic sense of pacing and a well written plot that shifted the entire story's contextual perspective not once, but twice.

Sorry about your shit taste and the fact you think the hipster attitude of not enjoying popular things makes you better than other people.

I'll probably be able to break even on my purchasing cost on most of my merch anyways, even with it being used, if I can bear to part with it. Character tax is on my side in this instance.

I think buyer's remorse happens to us all. I made a YOI bag too, but I was pretty picky with the merch I bought and was in Japan during that time so the bag is linked to fond memories. Plus some of YOI merch are some of the cutest I've seen. If anything, I sort of regret all the doujins I've bought of baldfat because while I enjoyed their romance greatly, I don't really ship them (in the same way you don't ship the protag and the heroine, kind of). The porn just makes me feel voyeuristic.

I have two other bags. None are of my husbando (I only have a single keychain on him), and one of the bags is for a show I'm not even up to date with, but I don't regret them either. I mean, while buying all this merch, I was well aware it wasn't useful. But the feeling of buying/receiving the merch makes me happy, and that (to me) is its true worth. Like going to the cinema is a "waste" of money since you can just watch it online, but people do it anyway because it makes them feel pampered and happy.

I think the thing a lot of people miss the point of, especially on Facebook, is that itabags are huge investment. They're meant to show your dedication. If you've just uncovered a new character and you're hyped then give it a month or so before you start spending hundreds of sweet dollars down on merch. It's really easy to get caught up in shiny new things but having a little discipline and thinking "hey will I still give a shit this time next year?" Can save you precious cash. Ok yeah, merch becomes harder to find later down the line and if they're ~*popular*~ it becomes more costly too. Its about understanding yourself, your income and what's reasonable. Don't be lured into peer pressure. I made the same mistake in the past but because the fandom was tiny I'm now stuck with all this crap for a character I don't care about that I can't sell.

As lame as that looks, it just seems to me like it's a bag that requires some decent effort to pull off. Put a tote with a color that makes the merch pop under it, take some time and really fill all of the pockets, and it could be really neat. Seems like it'd be nice for something with a lot of trading cards--I'd personally use it for a pokemon that doesn't have much other merch and put something like this in each pocket, be it a pan seal like this or a sprite/screencap button over each of the text sections.

Sorry, my "I'm going to post another bag." was meant as an acknowledgement that arguing over bag semantics when what I actually disagree with is your opinion of a tv show would be stupid, so I wasn't going to do it.

YOI honestly isn't a typical fujobait - made apparent by a lot of fujoshi disliking or not caring for the show, because it doesn't cater to the same set of tropes that they've come to expect and enjoy. It's okay if you don't like it, sports anime aren't for everyone, but the dismissive attitude rustles my jimmies.

My personal bubble of fandom isn't in it for teh yaoiz, but I recognize my exposure may be skewed. Being gay means I know a lot of other LGBT people, who are going to have a different motivation to watch Yuri on Ice than fujoshi do.

Honestly, it's because of this that I held off on making an itabag for my YOI sonfu. I waited until literally this sleeping keychain came out and I realized how much I really, truly loved him. Now that I'm actually building the bag, I feel like I'm falling all over him again.

Now I'm almost too embarrassed to say. Not only is he in the current FOTM show, but he was defeated last season, and the manga is like 4 seasons ahead and there's no sign of him returning. Which I feel makes me like the weirdo of the fandom cause nobody likes him as much I do.

I got my itabag today, still waiting on a bunch of items from eBay before I put it all together, but I'm extremely excited. It's from an etsy seller but the quality is amazing and even has pockets inside the backpack for things like pens, wallet, etc.

An anon asked if I bought the purple to post about the colour accuracy. The purple is a little redder than the purple shown in their colour choices. I've added an image for the more accurate colour beside an image of the backpack

There's actually quite a of merch! Some stuff is rarer than others, though - I haven't been able to find the clear files, for example. Besides the figures, there are at least three sets of prize straps, one set of small rubber charms, two big rubber charms, playing cards, a clock, one set of can badges, clear flies, two plush toys, one set of pillow keychains and two different photobooks.

Right now I have a big rubber strap that I'm planning to use as a center piece, with the smaller straps and badges around it, and two smaller plushies for outside the bag.

most of the bigger proxies (FJ, etc) have account names and such that get recognized by no proxy types pretty easily. the addresses they ask things to get sent to can also have sellers back out sometimes. you can get around them by using smaller proxy companies but their fees are usually way steeper.

for example, treasure japan starts at 800 yen a listing and scales up based on price. she also sometimes grabs things for me at like 12-1am JST thoughwhich has been a godsend for the mercari/otamart battles i've been doing over event merch right now. a lot of the smaller companies do transactions well outside of their operating hours since they have less volume and want to keep you around, it's just not a guarantee. ymmv on worth ratio there.

the short of it is, if it's an absolute must have from a gaijin hater or you're heavily competing with people, proxies like that are great desu. you just really need to evaluate if that's worth it on a per item basis. if it's a single uncommon strap on YJA then wait for someone less xenophobic to list it lol

If you're going to Tokyo there's a few places I can think of.

Pretty much every Animate has some bases, Ikebukuro has the best selection of them all.
Tokyu Hands also sells quite a few, at least their Ikebukuro storefront does. Sometimes the itabag-bases are in the very top floor and sometimes with other bags in the lower floors.
Thank You Mart sells cheap and a bit flimsy bases for 390 yen, they aren't very sturdy but will work if you're on a budget. They have storefronts in number of places like Harajuku and Ikebukuro.
Also, since see-through bags are sort of an hot item right now, there's a chance you'll be seeing them in random stores as well.

This isn’t my bag’s final form (don’t know that I’ll ever truly reach “final form”-tier) but I’m happy with it. This bag is GORGEOUS. I got it off eBay, but I actually like it a little more than the canvas Swimmer bag it’s based on. A friend of mine has a couple of those and we were comparing them before I bought this one, I like that it has the lace on the scalloped edge. The plastic isn’t that nasty glitter stuff, the pleather is super tough and slightly iridescent, and I could use this thing as a laptop bag if I really wanted to. 10/10 would recommend, if anyone cares. It comes in like 8-10 colors if I remember right. I’m probably late to the party and everyone and their mother has one of these though.

Things happen, opinions change. I was obsessed with a character for over 3 years and bought a bunch of figures and straps, and now I really don't care for him much. I do agree that people should bookmark merch and sit on it for atleast a month, if not longer. I had a bag planned and after a few months I wasn't really into the series anymore, so I'm happy I didn't let my impulsive behavior get the best of me.

This seller doesn’t have a lot of feedback because they’re new, but they shipped my bag super quick and it got to me pretty fast so it’s up to you if you want to use them or a different listing for the same bag. But it does come in white!

I'd reccomend either the white or metallic bags you have listed there - the mint ones are both hugely overused (and the mint on the heart backpack is weirdly bright on the cheap knock offs, not sure about on the WEGO ones). Personally I think the metallic one is the most cute - it's also a bit smaller, so good for baby's first bag.

An item I want to order will go up on a specific time, but short time frame, and will sell out super fast because of limited stock and super popular character. Which proxy would be fast enough to snag an order in time? FAQ doesn't get into it much and I've used WR/Buyee/FJ and they usually take 1-2 days to order it. I want to make sure I snag one so I don't have to fight auctions or cry at buy-it-nows for 5x its original price.
