Instagram is honestly really bad for my cosplaying. There's zero value to craftmanship as long as you look cool/pretty, which is seriously starting to demotivate me. It's the most shallow kind of interaction possible and even the "good" cosplayers are rarely worth following because they get peanuts for feedback and so don't post any WIPs.

I miss Tumblr being the big platform.

Which, as someone who is over the age of 18 and works full time, isnt always possible to keep full of cosplay work on a daily basis. Tumblr was so nice because you could also other fandom things, or your pets, and not watch your follower count drop moments later because it wasn't strictly cosplay.

I think tumblr isn't really worth it, I recently cleaned out my follower list and at least half of the blogs I followed were inactive. (especially the Homestuck ones) It was surreal seeing some of them that hadn't reblogged or posted since 2013

Hope you don't mind a non-homestuck butting in, but I'm doing a Gabumon gijinka and I was hoping for some advice on making his horn. I had a homestuck friend of mine suggest using paperclay around a tin foil core, but some of her tips have been a little questionable in the past. Is that actually a good method? Any other horn tips welcome.

It's fine, though I personally prefer insulation foam + paperclay. I find it easier to sculpt evenly and more lightweight.

Careful with wall anchors, they expand when the screw is screwed in and can break through the clay. I would try to find just a regular metal bolt instead. good luck!

It's a really nice condy, I agree. Not as over the top as you could go but honestly people who try to balance crazy and pretty fall onto the crazy side. The make up especially is lovely when so much of what we usually see is just so terrible and over the top.

that's probably an issue with solid clay, but the foam takes a little pressing on the inside just fine.
One of my anchors got stripped, so I had to replace it. Yanked it out of the foam, got a new anchor, put a wad of hot glue in there, then stuffed the new one in. Good as new after a little touching up of the horn base. Sounds janky as fuck, but there's no difference from the original screw in the other horn.

Simple but clean goes a long way and I think people forget, especially since insta's format works so much better for close up shots. It's hard to fit a full cosplay in that little square, so I think people try to overdo their makeup so they stand out. The jewelry on this one is really nice, too. Clean makeup + clean bling = quality cosplay.

I wish she'd extended the fuchsia band to go all the way around her back. I've never been a fan of people who only focus on detailing the front of outfits, it's like Mituna cosplayers who only add the black stripes to the front of his outfit and not the back. It screams lazy to me.

Happy Halloween, HSG. I know some of you weren't very into my standard Dirk wig, but I took the time to properly restyle it and figure you might like this one better.
Still editing these; I go from classic dirk to decapitated, and switch shirts. My gf pointed out that the hat switches direction, which bothers me but I'm not sure it bothers me enough to do anything about it. Oh well.

wig is great, latex looks shit.

A: use makeup that is your skin tone all over the latex parts AND all up your skin and face so it matches.

2: use red mixed with black in the grooves of the "cut" to make it look deep and realistic.

The blood on the shirt is fine, but the makeup needs practice. It's not the worst ever, but I believe you can do it.

This is completely fair, even if I didn't think it was quite that bad. I feel like the cut would've looked better had I used more than one type of blood; clean latex/wax work is not my forte so I consciously go for gorey and messy, but with only one type of faux blood you lose a lot of depth.

I have previously struggled with blending latex; this time I used the same foundation as I had on my face, but I realize now that it was less covering than it'd seemed. With that said, I often struggle applying the latex evenly and that kinda fucks me over when I try and blend it colour-wise. Like, is there a trick to applying latex without having to use fresh tools every ten seconds lest it stick to itself?

I did use some blues and greens in the red, but I could've done more, definitely.

Have a gif that's too big for tumblr and I've no idea how to size down without fucking it up.

As for the latex, just practice before bed since youre gonna take it off anyway. It takes a really long time and there's not much of a way around that except skill.

Besides the blood you really need to use actual makeup though. You have a lot of promise so maybe invest in a ben nye pallette of blood and bruise colors?

I did actually use greasepaint and eyeshadow to bruise it up; the faux blood I use doesn't linger much on or stain the skin so there's that. I'm thinking that maybe I'll try and prepare the ridges ahead of time next time instead of doing it straight on my skin.

Hopefully! Seems like fun for people who want to make fantrolls and cosplay them, but don't know where to start. It's nice to finally have canon moon/aspect tests, though. I've heard mostly positive things about it, but I know some people don't have as favorable of opinions of it.

I get the feeling that next year there's gonna be an uptick in HS cosplays. I've noticed it gaining popularity again along with new waves of fans. But I could just as easily be wrong. I doubt it'll ever be as intense as the first time around. But these fans are full of surprises. Maybe Andrew is going to release something that bumps it to that level.

People are going nuts over this quiz, and I think that's playing a big role in this second coming of Homestuck's fandom. There was an obvious slow increase but I can tell that with the chaos surrounding the quiz and the $54,000 dollars raised for the SBAHJ book Kickstarter... the fans are still out there. And it seems to me that their interest is returning.

I think that the troll call is more likely to get people cosplaying than the quiz- I also think it’s lame, and people get more excited about unique character designs that other people will recognize than they do about coming up with an entire character from scratch. Even in the fandom's heyday there weren’t a ton of people cosplaying fan characters.

Hussie is just a guy who wanted to make a comic, he was in no way equipped to handle the massive beast it became, which is fine, but I wish he'd realize what kind of gold he'd struck much sooner and hired someone to do marketing and development for him back in 2011. Imagine if we'd had someone with some actual know-how taking care of business through the pauses. Imagine if we'd gotten proper merch in 2013.

Afaik, the Torontostucks are the only ones who ever do anything outside of conventions these days, but, there were like, at least 5 or 6 Homestuck panels listed on the schedule for a Chicago con coming up in a couple weeks. I think it's mostly younger kids setting things up, though.

You could keep them up by sticking wire into them probably. I do the same thing with Tavros horns I make, just get some 12 or 14 gauge wire or whatever suits your needs and shove it a good way into the horns and use the wire as a headband of sorts. You'd just have to make sure your horns are light; I keep my Tavros horns at around half a pound each but those monsters are substantially bigger

I am actually blessed with a Kuprum who has a functional backpack for me to stash real shoes in for when i have to be outside. so even though it was hell to find light enough grey toe socks that would actually ship in time for Katsu, we're makin it happen. The socks aren't ideal, but they'll work.

I feel like its a pretty okay middle point between beforus and the original 12 trolls. story-wise, there is definitely more freedom for them in this universe, but not beforus levels of nonviolence and individuality.

Fat Feferi and the Fat Vriska Discourse was actually super validating for a lot of people in fandom before diverse headcanons started being a thing. Not really sure who started it all, but in 2011 fanart was incredibly limited to skinny white bread and few artists decided 'fuck it, we're going against the grain on this one' RE: Fat Vriska Is A Funny Joke, SaccharineSylph being one of them, along with tumblr user Gamzee (who's credibility later went in the shitter, if i remember right). It gave a lot of young kids confidence to cosplay characters regardless of their weight, and fandom turned a negative thing into a positive, which was kind of cool.
Even cooler when Hussie turned it around and brought in Jane being teased for being fat and chesty by the bad guy, and it being shown as a really not okay thing. Hey, maybe the huss actually learned a thing or two? We can only assume with the direction homestuck went on Dave and other characters. And here we are in 2018, with characters being drawn as chubby (Zebede) right from the get-go.

I've used this stuff and I like it a lot personally. It made me feel like a Pepsi can. It was super shiny and I don't remember having any troubles with it smudging. It felt a lot like a water activated makeup.

Con was ok, kind of shitty staff all weekend that really didn't help an already disorganized shoot run by a literal child on friday. Barstuck didn't really pick up til way late. Drawmeet got hassled by staff to move and despite the meet being in the same place the last 5 years, they claimed they'd never heard of it and it def wasn't allowed in the area it was in.

I went and grabbed a bunch of pics off instagram, then promptly fell asleep before posting. So I'll do that tonight.
