A thread to post your stupid questions. For Jfashion and Cosplay.

Starting off: I want 2 items from a store that sells wholesale lots, and the 2 items are from a 60 piece lot. Do you think they'll sell them to me separately if I get my SS to send them a message, or am I going to have to buy the whole thing?

You can always sell what you don't want after, depending on what it is (like if it's something to do with itabags or something). It's quite a bit of work, but at the very least, you should be able to make your money back

I want to cosplay Oscar from Rose of Versailles and I'm thinking about buying a binder.
I have pretty big breasts and Oscar supposed to be androgynous looking.
Is it worth it to invest a binder for only one cosplay and is it really necessary for this cosplay? It technically isn't crossdressing.
Someone told me it would be cheaper to just use bandages or tape but i've heard it's not very healthy?

If it’s just for one cosplay for one time you can probably just buy a really nice sports bra then layer a tight cami over it.

Does anybody have recommendations for anime or manga that have characters with really big, intricate and pretty ballgowns that aren't Rose of Versailles or CLAMP? I got a bunch of extra steel in the mail and I've always wanted to try my hand at making my own crinoline, but I have no idea what to cosplay.

I am really attracted to lolita girls. Would it be weird for me to come to a lolita convention for the purposes of flirting with qt lolitas?

I know for most girls it's their hobby, and they aren't trying to impress men.
But would they mind at all if a man was impressed?

Okay how the fuck does a shopping service work? I see lolitas getting boxes big enough to hold a chair filled with a dozens dresses and even more accessories. Did these girls just drop $3k at once and have it all shipped in one box or did they buy a piece here and a piece there then have the shopping service hold their items THEN ship it out? If that’s the case how do I get in on that?

Depends on how you look/dress. I think it looks more 1980s without bangs

>> No.9662850

>>9662829
That probably would be creepy, yes. Lolita events are dedicated to fashion, unless you wear Ouji, Aristo or lolita yourself and wear it well, you'll likely creep girls out. Talk to lolitas at anime conventions if you absolutely must, just remember that lolitas are individuals and you might not have a lot in common beyond the fact you like the clothes.

>> No.9662854

>>9662835
It changes on the SS, but most services will hold your items for up to a month. So they can buy a whole haul of $3k items at once and ship it from them, or they can buy here and there for up to a month before shipping out. If you don't ship it within a month, depending on the SS, you get fined or they start throwing out stuff.

Buyee is decently easy to understand their FAQ. They're one of the more expensive SS, but they're the easiest to use.

>> No.9662864

>>9662839
I think it'd need bangs personally. Most anime inspired hairstyles tend to look awkward without bangs. It'd also probably look better if your bangs blend into side framing so that there's still hair on your cheekbones and covering your ears when everything is pulled back.

Hey gulls, I've got a probably stupid question for the Lolita group.

Have you ever/would you ever buy handmade dresses and apparel? I am so mentally and creatively fatigued from my job that I'd like to quit and buy the mats to start making cute stuff again -- wondering if there's any actual market for that or if handmade is considered super trashy for some reason

>> No.9663584

>>9663573
I'm kind of planning to launch my own handmade lolita clothes business soon too and I personally think there's always customers for handmade stuff as long as it's well done. Quality is the key imo. If you wanna sell trashy/cheap looking things, nobody's gonna buy that, at least not enough to let you make a living out of it.

>> No.9663586

>>9663584
Of course not. I'd be making quality things, but I also know how poorly Lolitas speak of non-brand. I'll definitely have to try to understand my market better there.

Have you seen the examples of handmade lolita floating around? The stigma exists not because it's not brand but because it's shitty quality more often than not. If your sewing and designing skills and choice of materials are all good then people will love your stuff and will pay for it.
Keep in mind that people may not buy from you if your pieces sell for around brand prices because they see brand quality as more consistent and may be hesitant to drop $200 or more on a handmade piece by a designer they don't know.

>but I also know how poorly Lolitas speak of non-brand

If I had a dollar. Lolitas don’t hate offbrand, I’m sick to death of seeing this bizarre stigma float around. As long as the piece is well made and looks nice we don’t care, some of the best dresses I’ve seen have been handmade and nowadays offbrand/taobao dresses are catching up in quality and often surpass Brand in terms of creativity and variety.
The only peope who honestly still think that offbrand = ita are usually insecure itas themselves.

If you're like "I got this from so-and-so, isnt it cute?" nobody's gonna turn around and put you down for not having made it yourself unless they're some newbie asshole trying to feel high and mighty about their own (usually if they're cosplaying the same character, in my experience). Half the people you see at cons are wearing cheap taobao cosplays anyways

and as for what >>9665243 said this is true but completely reasonable because masquerades/contests like that are generally specifically there for judging and congratulating people's handiwork on homemade costumes. It's basically a skills competition; you wouldnt enter someone else's poem into a poetry competition either, even if you memorised and can recite it well, right? It isnt anything to do with stigma and condescencion, just fairness. And even still, most cons I've seen will still let you perform onstage and get pics from the masquerade even if you have a fully purchased costume, you're just not personally eligible for the awards for obvious reasons.

If you're trying to match to your own colour and don't have black hair or something equally easy to match I'd say honestly just buy them in person. Most hair salons that do extensions etc will have them in stock for a decent price and they can help you match your exact colour. That's how I found mine, and was able to find a perfect match. (Slight digression but I have such an annoyingly specific shade of blonde that the shopkeeper was actually relieved to find someone who'd match a piece they'd had in stock for ages, so I actually got a pretty great discount too)

Oh! I seem to have missed this coord out. Thanks, anon!

Basically, the bib thing doesn't flow well with most blouses, there's an obvious disconnect and I'm looking for a way to smoothen that out.

Other examples I've seen used round collars that drape over the top part of the bib to cover the top part of the JSK, but I feel it gives the coord a vibe that's too sweet for my taste. Tying a brown or beige ribbon with a high neck collar might help with covering the top of the JSK, but I'm worried that too much of one colour in concentrated in one place.

Tl;dr: I'm trying to make the JSK look seamless with the blouse

>> No.9667110

If you can't find a blouse that blend perfectly, what about wearing a short sleeves bolero on top instead? Or maybe a blouse with a square neck that is wide enough so only the sleeves are visible once the JSK is on?
Otherwise, you have to order a custom made blouse with the same embellishments and the same color.

How's it possible that after almost 500 000 years of clothing history there aren't any universal books or guides how to draft a sewing pattern on any piece of clothing you can come up with?

>> No.9667163

>>9667158
There are some good books, it's just that the rules of patterning aren't absolute compared to, say, the fundamentals of art. There's no set of rules that applies to all garments, different pieces require different techniques to pattern.

I also blame salty gulls for hiding their techniques for 500000 years.

>> No.9667171

into pattern drafting by watching very long tutorials on YouTube of pattern drafting, then start practicing. Don’t be afraid to suck at first and just know you’ll make some stupid looking clothes, it’s fine. Understand how garments are put together, making patterns requires some 3D thinking.
Wanna make some simple leggings? Take a pair of leggings you like and observe how they’re constructed, then replicate that design. Do the same with some other garments you have, to make the paper pattern just buy some butcher’s paper and start drawing. If you’re confused on how to make something look up Professor Pincushion, and I always recommend Attitude Lolita, she has a great tutorial on drafting an underbust JSK.

pattern drafting is a lot of fun, it takes a long time at the beginning but it’s 100% worth it to push through the learning curve. it’s like a superpower to just think ‘I want another dress that looks like this.’ and to just be able to make it, or ‘wow this fabric is super cute I’ll make myself some lounge pants with it’ and have lounge pants in a few hours.
Huge disclaimer though; handmade lolita is not necessarily cheaper than buying dresses outright. sure, the fabric may be cheaper, but what gets you is the amount of lace, ruffles, any tiering you might do, trim, any under layers, any chiffon, buttons, and accessories. that shit adds up quick.

You could plan out coords individually or you can do hauls of good, universal pieces. I like to go on Y!A and buy a bunch of good, (more often than not) cheap shit that’ll go with multiple pieces, consolidate it, then ship it to my house. If you’re first starting out I recommend doing something similar. Start simple, and then polish off your wardrobe with pieces that may only go with one dress. It also helps if you have a certain substyle/wardrobe theme. I’m a country lolita whore so a blue gingham bow could go with, like, 3 of my dresses.

>> No.9668179

>>9668172
A lot of the time it's easier to get a full set when the dress is new and there's a lot of back and fourth in the market from either scalpers, people who changed their mind, etc A lot of people also sell their full sets AS a full set so it gets passed down as such. You seem to want to plan coords around brand pieces in specific but I'm not sure if youre talking about getting the same pieces as in the set or if you want to grab stuff from all over the place and AFTER it's been planned try and get the pieces.
I'd recommend that you get dresses you personally like or fit into a certain aesthetic, and then gather accessories accordingly. Personally my wardrobe falls under a specific pallet/ theme/ tone so I know if I continue buying pieces under this theme I can find ways to mix and match and that allows you to make more than one coord with one dress.
OFC if your dress has an outlier theme maybe consider worrying about the main pieces popping up and going to places like taobao for your accessories where the stock is often times less limited and you can buy more at your liesure?

Sticking to a palette helps with flexibility, and I have a lot of non-print so that makes a pretty big difference in terms of how things can be interchangeable. E.g. I have a classical ivory/offwhite-brown-navy wardrobe for the most part, so it's highly unlikely that I'd get a sweet pink main piece where I'd have to get a bunch of extra stuff just to make one outfit.

Also have some hard and fast rules for blouses that help me narrow down choices. E.g.
>yes pintucks, high collars, peter pan collars, smaller/delicate laces, long or 3/4 sleeves, defined waist cuts, cotton
>no ruffles down center next to buttons, heavy ruffles on ends of sleeves, sausage sleeves, bell sleeves, convertible sleeves, boxy cuts, shirring of any sort
>maybe minimum lace on collar, yokes, puff sleeves, lacing/ties in back, chiffon

This is something that you discover over time with a bit of trial and error depending on how things sit on your body.

Not much for theming/motifs though, I definitely admire those that stick to one thing. For me it's more about color and shape harmony.

Possibly better asked in the taobao thread, but might be retarded so here i go.

What exactly are "factory seconds"? I've been watching some taobao hauls recently with people buying liz lisa factory seconds - i'd assume they were slightly faulty items that don't make it to retail, however they sell for retardedly cheap prices on taobao.

How does one find out if they are actually factory seconds?

Are they replica tier, or just poorfag tier?

>> No.9670538

Alright, I just got my Charge 2 payment for FromJapan and for some reason my only shipping option is DHL. Apparently an item I ordered couldn't be packaged into SAL option (it was a 10 item LL lot) so they had to repackage the items otherwise, but I can only see DHL as an option right now. Does anyone know what I should ask them for repackaging or delivery purposes? I was hoping to send it out in two batches of EMS.

>>9670486
Factory seconds are basically items that were produced but not bought by the retailer. This includes faulty items, as well as items that were simply made in additional batches. Say that Angelic Pretty orders 500 Holy Lantern OPs. The factory makes batches of 150 and overproduces 100 dresses. These dresses are the exact same as the one's AP sells, but they were never "ordered" from the company and thus are "factory seconds".
While these goods are sold on taobao, usually they aren't actually factory seconds. Most likely, they're factories that had the original print textile and just reprint, or just straight up replicas. You wouldn't be able to tell if they are legit factory seconds if not in person.

I don't know if you were referring to me but I posted in the draw thread wearing Perfume Bottle and I also own MM's Antella OP but I don't think those are quite as old. Lolibrary won't load for me right now but I want to say they were like 2011ish? Anyway, I just barely comfortably fit Perfume Bottle. It said on the listing waist is 72 and I'm 66-67 so idk if the measurements given were wrong or what. Antella was listed as 75 and fits SUPER roomy on my waist. There's back lacing to tighten it, but I don't like how the extra fabric bunches. I was told MM runs small so maybe Antella was the rare exception. I hope the seller gets back to you! I'm sorry I was really no help at all.

No, you're definitetly helpful! The girl who was wearing it was very early in the draw thread, I actually asked her what she was wearing because I'd seen it around so much and the decorative hem is seriously calling my name.

I got it loaded up, and both are from 2012 and Perfume Bottle is supposed to ironically run bigger than Antella, listing 70-78. Interesting that there's inconsistencies. I was mostly in a rush asking as there's one for a very reasonable price on Y!J right now that ends tomorrow, but it's not the color I really want and it looks like it will be a bid fight that I don't want to go at for something that might not fit me. Maybe it's a sign to just wait for the black x gray one.

Hi there - I have Tweed Ribbon and just measured it - flat measurements come just shy of 34cm - I think it might be a tight fit, but it should be ok? Sorry - I wish I could be more help. This is after unlacing the dress entirely too, FYI.

I really like the black and grey one! Personally, I would wait for the one I really want but a good price is hard to pass on. That's so crazy about the inconsistencies in measurements! Hope it all works out!

Ahh, thank you so so so much! I seriously appreciate it! I have fit an ETC skirt that was listed at 65 cm before, so I'm mildly hopeful. I'll probably end up waiting for the one I actually want, it's Christmas gift season anyways.

>>9676396
Thanks, and I agree. Honestly the one on LM is actually higher than ones that have sold in the past as far as I could research, after international shipping and I'm betting a small bid war I don't think the Y!J one will be so cheap that it's a steal. It'll just go on my dream list~

Can Japonica message Marcari/Fril sellers to inquire about item condition? Or rather are they willing to? I've never used them before and am eyeing a coat, but the picture quality is pretty garbage and they say in the description that there is some yarn damage (it's wool) but I honestly can't tell between the pixels.

Also is there an advantage to Mercari vs Fril? I think I remember that one charges sellers more so if items are listed on both generally they're cheaper on one. The coat I'm specifically looking at is actually the same on both this time so does it matter in this instance?

What’s the cheapest thing to make a shitton of copies from that will actually work?

I’m talking like resin-like casting, but for things that are four inches in diameter that I’m going to need at least a hundred of? It also needs to be relatively lightweight.

I’m thinking of making a clay model, making a mold, then using some sort of filler in the mold about a hundred times, but can’t figure out what type of filler I could use.

Yes, Japonica can ask sellers questions for you, add those in the "Note" portion of the shopping cart. Just make sure to be specific and use simple English.
And iirc things on Mercari seem to cost more because most listings offer free shipping; unless the price is drastically different on fril, it's basically the same thing because you'll be paying for shipping within Japan on fril anyway.

To class. Out to eat. To the mall. To run errands. Lolita isn't special occasion wear for me, it's my clothes. Once you get over the idea that you have to have a reason to wear Lolita (and that every outfit has to be perfectly coorded, photographed, and posted online) the fashion gets a lot more fun.

> Once you get over the idea that you have to have a reason to wear Lolita (and that every outfit has to be perfectly coorded, photographed, and posted online) the fashion gets a lot more fun.

Holy shit I wish someone had told me this when I first got into the fashion. I got so used to seeing OTT coords online that I felt like I wasn't able to make a proper outfit without all the extra shit, and then I constantly just felt self conscious and overdressed. I think it's good to have some dresses that are better for special occasions, but when I first started I bought whatever OTT dresses were on sale at the time and now I barely get any use out of them, since they're too detailed or delicate for daily wear and I don't have a local comm to go to meets.

Now I realise that it's better for me to buy versatile, wearable pieces that I can wear out shopping, to class etc. And since I'm a lonelita who doesn't post my coords online, no one is going to care if I don't 100% have perfect accessories, hairstyling or whatever. It's really liberating and I enjoy the fashion a lot more. Before I just felt like I was hoarding dresses I couldn't wear more than a few times a year, or I was putting off wearing certain dresses because I didn't have the right hairbow or something. It's meant to be a street fashion, and I feel like a lot of people forget that.

I realize its not why you wear it, but I'd love to see your coords. There aren't enough examples of people who wear things everyday (and post them online). I hope I come across yours some day!

Japonica anon feeling stupid still, though thank you >>9677697 for your assistance!

...Is something supposed to happen when you fill out the Shopping form and hit Add to Cart? I don't get an error message like when I don't fill out anything, but there's no evidence I have anything in a cart or really how I should proceed. Empty and Update seem to do nothing. Tried Safari, Chrome, Firefox... Do they still accept email orders like I've found in an old review of their site from 2015? Or is there just a "how to use Japonica" guide so I can stop putting stupid questions here?

so idk where i should post this so be gentle on me. I have a five head (bless Beyoncé) and wear my hair long no bangs. but I really want bangs. I also have a kind of long face. Should I just go for it? It's to look cute in lolita and shit. But I have oily skin. Haven't had bangs in years because they'd get greasy as fuck if I didn't powder them occasionally. Should I get fake bangs?

So I consider this "stupid" because of how crazy I'd have to be but;

Assuming I had the funds and connections to start a small anime convention in my city to coincide with another Japanese event, what kind of advice/warnings would you give?

I was thinking of starting with just a Saturday convention center rental, which isn't all the pricey and allying with local groups and sponsors to put something quaint but nice together and just see how it grows.
