9646755 No.9646755 [Reply] [Original]

Is it morally unacceptable to cosplay certain characters? Some characters that I find visually interesting tend to be very. . . questionable. . . to the say the least to the point that I'm scared to cosplay it in fear of being attacked by neckbeards armed with katanas. And beyond that, should one feel guilt? Discuss.

>> No.9646758

No...? They're fictional characters. Anyone who cares this much is overly sensitive and/or has a stick up their ass.

>> No.9646765

what characters are you talking about?
I don't think it's ever morally wrong to cosplay a character, but it might be pretty insensitive to cosplay certain characters, like those who use clear Nazi imagery etc

I mean yeah Griffith is a shitty dude, but you're not going to get your ass kicked like if you're parading around in a Schutzstaffel uniform; hell if anything you'd probably get some "Griffith did nothing wrong" call outs and maybe some photo ops with Guts cosplayers.

So I think consensus is it's okay to cosplay a villain, whether the villain did something cartoonishly evil (zim, Iago from Aladdin) or if they are actually really bad (Griffith, Claude Frollo, Bellatrix Lestrange), you aren't really advocating their actions to be copied in real life unless you really are a nut case. We like villains for a reason, Vader is way cooler than Obi Wan, most great Disney villains carry more pathos than the entire princess lineup combined. That doesn't equal advocacy for mass genocide or puppy slaughter.

Now, on a similar topic, I think it's weird when people cosplay famous people. I'm not talking about something like "the Emma Watson version Belle" but something like "hi I'm markiplier". It's weird and a little creepy. Even something like dressing in a Miley Cyrus wrecking ball outfit is a little borderline for me.

>> No.9646879

>>9646874
Agreeing with you for the most part. I'm okay with people cosplaying, say, the outfits My Chemical Romance wore for certain albums/music videos. Maybe that's moreso because they're alter egos or something, idk. Same goes for Ninja Sex Party cosplayers, for example. The people who play those characters see them as separate from themselves. However, people walking around actually pretending they're Dan Avidan or Jacksepticeye are bizarre. It's like when people write Youtuber fanfiction, it seems invasive or something. Because they're just average people with very public jobs.

>> No.9646922

>>9646879
As an extension of that, I don't get how people cosplay K-pop idols. sure there's some pretty icononic looks but more often than not it's just tight skimpy clothes or generic cute outfits and someone who looks NOTHING like the idol is like "yeah I'm x from snsd but no one recognized me :'((" Like ok let's be real here your 'cosplay' is a tiny red dress and it just feels weird to be impersonating a real person.

Visual kei is so intentionally visual that it's normal to just wear the outfits. Fans tend to wear at least parts of recognizable stage concerts to shows to show support. Wearing a musician's iconic costume as cosplay is fine but what you shouldn't do is actually go around doing inappropriate stuff as the musician, like kiss and grope each other for fanservice. I mean if you're posting an SU image, you should understand. These fucks all came from the Tumblr Homestuck fandom in way or another when they were impressionable young babs, and once the mega hiatuses started happening their short attention spans forced them to abandon ship to other material; first being things such as Attack on Titan and Dangit Ronpal, Gravity Falls, Bobs Burgers, Steven Universe, and coming full circle with Undertale. In their quest for new content, they exposed new impressionable young babs to their erratic tendencies and the cycle began anew.

They're nothing but locusts and their only intent is to hop onto a fandom for a couple of months, flood it with fanfiction and shipping, and then hop ship after the stream of content slows down again.

I really don't think anyone within the Fate fandom would want to beat you half to death over a servant's historical background over what they do in universe. If anything, I'd expect you to get more flak cosplaying as Caster Gilles's Master from Zero rather than Caster himself (which when done well, is really good/funny in a positive way). For majority of the servants out there, I -highly- doubt anyone not versed in Fate would know who you were based off of.

I'd like to one day bring back my old Schrodinger cosplay. It was sort of a baby's first cosplay from a few years ago, so it has some imperfections, especially with the epaulets. Despite that, it was a bit popular, but I think I can make it better. I just need to find a better shirt and modify it. It was one I found at Goodwill but it's too wide. I had to use a scrunchy to tighten the back of it. Plus, the wig needs to be trimmed a bit in the front. Only problem is that I worry SJWs will harass and/or attack me at cons, thinking I'm a real Nazi. A while ago, I asked about bringing back my Schrodinger cosplay on FB. One person discouraged me from doing it. I don't even have a Nazi armband. I made mine out of felt and put a Maltese cross on it instead of a swastika. The person discouraging me from bringing back Schrodinger said even wearing a Maltese cross on the armband is pushing it. What do, anons? It is a costume that would go far more smoothly if you had a Hellsing group. I wouldn't wear the costume outside the convention ground. If you must wear it in public, I'd make sure to take off the armband when traveling outside the convention. You could just make the armband without the symbol. That's fairly common. Honestly, there's a lot of uniforms and costume designs based of Nazi regalia. Hell, the director for Nicki Minaj's Only video admitted that the uniforms and imagery in the video were taken directly from the Nazis. Equally, you aren't glorifying anything, but it is tricky... you'll likely offend someone who hasn't seen the show.

People send death threats the game of thrones villains all the time. Real life actors, get threats and harassment because retards think they aren't acting. It wouldn't be that much of a stretch to assume cosplayers would gain the same kind of attentions from autists.

There are some people who cannot separate fantasy from reality and cannot control their emotions enough to try not to act on it.

Ah, what a relieve. Then I can wear my Hitler cosplay without hesitations since I'm not gloryfing the mass-murder of jewish people.

On a serious note, nobody's able to look what's going on inside your mind or heart.
They will only see a guy in a Hitler costume and assume you're ok with him and everything he stands for. At least as long as you don't provide for a fitting context to wear said Hitler costume. Nobody took Chaplin for a nazi-lover because he played the role of a hitler-looking dictator in a film that was very obviously meant to be satire and criticism of the political situation in Germany of that time.

You have no context= People will make their own assumptions

You can cosplay anyone. In a perfect world, it'd be even okay to change your complexion, if you did it correctly, but racism is still a touchy subject thanks to asshats promoting it and shit, so for now leave the makeup at home. Maybe in another 200 years someone won't bat an eye at a white person playing Blade with make-up or a black person playing Daenerys with makeup, assuming both go all out and perfect their makeup techniques (and not offensive caricatures)

Not that guy but wait what? Everyone considers blackface to be the worst thing ever, even and maybe even especially white people. Not sure what you're getting at. Definitely not defending blackface, it's in bad taste 100% of the time with almost no exceptions but yes, if you're white and you wear it, you get wayyy more shit for it than anyone else and probably deservedly so. Also just look at all the accusations of whitewashing that get thrown around 24/7 at literally anything and everything media-related. I mean I dunno maybe we live in different worlds

It boggles my mind that the general 'geek community has gone from edgelording as hard as possible to please censor everything won't someone think of the children!! And so quickly too. The edgelording could be cringey of course, but the current generation is something else.

The part that really rustles my jimmies is how we've gone from a united stance on how fiction doesn't affect reality and video games/slasher films/rock music etc do not make you do bad things, to the current generation wholeheartedly believing that consuming or creating any kind of 'problematic' media makes you an irredeemably evil person and begging for censorship.

How and why did this happen so fast? Some kind of psyop getting the youth to submit to authority? Or are they really that stupid?

What if I dressed as Hitler but its Hitler from Persona 2?

>> No.9682404

>>9682336
I've asked this. The general idea is that the character in question is still the real world figure they'r based on, so the mileage will vary based on how your country viewed them.

So, in Hitler-chan's case, his Persona character is essentially still Hitler.

Now, there is room to get cheeky. You could be Roger de Bris' Hitler character, because it's a different person playing as Hitler- and in such a way that it demasculates Hitler and infuriates actual Nazis.

However, there's a growing trend of "triggering" with Nazi uniforms and style in general, so you still might run afoul of certain cons, like the ne that banned Nazi and Hydra uniforms.

>> No.9682780

Honestly the biggest turn off I get from cosplaying 'morally bad' characters are from the fans themselves. I don't give a shit about what people who don't even know anything about what I'm cosplaying from besides what tumblr told them think about myself or the time and work I put into my cosplay, but my god is it fucking exhausting to get recognized by edgelords or real autists who get creepy about it.

At the end of the day it's a fucking costume, and should be treated as such. People who take it too real either by being real sjw about it or by getting weird chummy with it make it exhausting. Unless I really like a character, I honestly don't even think it's worth the trouble it invites from both sides. And even then, I'm not going to be a fucking weirdo and act in character, like I'm at a con surrounded by real other people-unless someone else asks or prompts me to, it's real weird to try and act in character when people around me probably don't know source material.
