Frequently asked questions:
>How much is a new suit
Expect to pay at least 2k for a fullsuit commission, 3k+ for something padded, and higher if a realistic suit
>Where to buy second hand?
https://www.furbuy.com/
https://www.thedealersden.com/
>What about Japanese suits?
I recommend Atlier Amanojaku at the moment, go to furstar.jp for pre-designed characters with a set price.

Well, since this is how I got my baby I feel I can help with this. Especially because I had to explain this to other anons lol.

I used Furstar.jp (english link is on the site)
Prices are generally 3000-5000 but some can go as high as 9000 for one design.
The most simplistic designs tend to share a template of a generic canine. These can be as low as $2000+ but you have to keep in mind the 8% tax charge.

Next, be sure to read the description. Some come with extra padding options that you can pay for. These are purely optional. The standard will come with knee and possibly leg padding.

Once in contact, they will send you a quote form and ask for your paypal. You may discuss a payment plan or just pay all at once.
They only do WIP pictures at certain points, so be positive that this is what you want. They are very easy to work with, just be careful about their English. You may or will have to rephrase things.

Any other questions?

So, uh, this is gonna sound really stupid. But I figured you guys would have the most experience when it came to building large user-friendly helmet appliances that aren't armor.

I need to make a carrot. A really fucking huge carrot. Pic related. Does anyone have any recommendations as far as materials, maybe a support system, or a way to keep the bastard on my head? The furthest I've gotten as far as ideas is a couple layers of buckram for shape, a shell of thin upholstery foam to give dimension, and covering it in fleece or something similar and doing the ridges with hand-tacking to keep the structure from collapsing. Any sage advice would be appreciated.

Myself I cosplayed a couple antro and masked things that wouldn't be classified furry but somewhere inbetween, and I wouldn't classify myself as a furry unless you have a fursona, which I won't get, the whole roleplaying is not my thing. I think some fursuits are really cool, >>9646659
>>9646957 and >>9647162 for example, and they look really unique to me, but I feel like most people who make fursonas just take the standard cartooney wolf and slap as many weird colors and shapes on it as possible, and most of the time it doesn't look visually appealing at all

I know a lot of people who create OCs have the problem that they want their character to have every single cool aspect they can think of (different colored eyes, wings, horns, piercings, demonic powers etc etc) to make the most interesting character, but it just leads to the character looking boring and unappealing.
But I feel like this problem is so extremely common in (what I've seen of) the furry community

Good simple rule for suiting is always wait for other people to initiate contact, beyond maybe a wave if they're looking your way with a curious or interested look.
The rest is learning how to manage your body language when in costume so you don't appear overbearing when interacting with the public.

Obviously if you're just hanging with friends you can take some liberties but for the general public or anyone you're not familiar with, it's a good rule of thumb.

It had been unconditionally accepting of a weird kid trying to figure themselves out, experimenting with sexuality and gender and presentation... nowhere have I EVER recieved so much encouraging feedback on my creative work, or met people who were so genuinely curious and willing to expand their worldview.

I guess I just grew up enough to realize that anyone who would judge me on whether I self identified as a furry before judging me on the hundereds of other things I am or do isn't going to be worth my time anyway, and also I wanted to give back to the community and destigmatizing the terminology is part of that.

No, the tail company stuff is simply remote controlled. You have to push a button to get movements or put in auto mode that just does the slower movements on a timer, this is pretty clearly different because it automatically moves with your body.
And there's 10 gazillion people that sell regular ol' stuffed non-moving tails and a ton of different fursuit makers, there's pretty clearly a big enough market to support more than one maker of robot tails.

I shouldn't be as surprised as I am, but too many people can't into proper video formatting and upload everything in 1920 x 1080 regardless of the contents aspect ratio.
>Actual tail
Only things I have to say:
Generally, yes I can guarantee there's going to be interest in it if you guys are good enough at shilling it.
Me personally though, I'm not a fan of how the base moves about way more than the rest of the length, makes it look like it's not anchored properly.
I'd also want to have a better idea of how it works and how loud the servo setup is, by the look of the video I'd guess it's just a IMU or two for sensory input.
If you really wanted to corner the market though, there's no proper pre-made options for large lizard / dinosaur / dragon tails, animatronic or otherwise.Usually more of a hardcore DIY kind of guy when building this sort of stuff, but have no problems getting stuff off the shelf if it's on the nose for what I need and priced reasonably.

Anyone got any tips for adjusting the mouth position of a head? I'd like to try and get Natalie's mouth a little more open than it has gotten over the years, back to where it originally was. I've started propping her mouth open a little when she's put away to try and persuade the foam into shape, would there be anything else to do?

I suppose I could also look into getting a bust to keep her head on rather than sitting on a shelf, which would alleviate the weight on the jaw.

First head I made has a moving jaw. Didn't quite work the way I wanted it to first time 'round, but with some internal changes it works well enough now. The worst that can happen is either it moves, but not enough to your liking, or you give up and make it static after the fact.
Don't be afraid of screwing up, plan ahead (ha) so the likelihood of screwing up is virtually non-existent.

she has a bunch of suits of her character made by other makers, which actually really is a nice way of showing off styles. she's a suit maker herself so she does it through fursuit trades instead of commissioning.

This man. It's teenagers or weirdos who don't understand basic mascot etiquette. I haven't had my suit long but I used to work at Disney and even when you aren't a performer they teach you so much about guest interaction that being in suit at charity events and in public has felt very comfortable for me and I have had only pleasent experiences so far. You don't have to be lolwhackyaminal every second. A lot of it is common sense too, like if kids approach you crouch down to their level and don't push them to interact with you.

The last event I did was a sick kid's benefit party. There was a very young girl, maybe 3 or 4 at most who was very shy but interested in me, so when I noticed her near I would crouch down and wave. When she acted scared I would put my paws over my eyes and act shy too. After a while she finally found the courage to come over. I heldout my right paw and pet it with my left to show her it was okay to touch and she did. After that I was like a giant stuffed animal to her and we played with balloons and she kept dancing and hopping around me. It was a perfect interaction. If I had tried to grab her into a hug or chased her with crazy whacky movements she would have ended up crying and being traumatized.

TL;DR
Furrues need to learn to not splerg jfc.

Choose who you tell and be casual about it. If you act nervous or ashamed they will pick up on that negativity, but also don't be a dumbass squeeing and bragging about how kawaii your suit is. Find local furry groups and hope they aren't spergy. I found some through meet up and went bowling and did a few little events. My university has an unofficial club that I discovered through a member from one of the first groups I met with because they are in both and we started talking about school.

I told my parents. Called it a mascot suit and explained that I was doing volunteer work with it at fairs and charity events. I don't wear it around them or shove pics of it down their throats, but I needed a Hawaiian shirt for one event so it came up casually when I asked if my dad had one and he said "sure what for?". My friends are not comfortable going out with me in it so no handler right now but they're chill about my owning it.

This is the worst. When it happens I try to be as nice to the kid as possible or pose for the pic quick so the parent will haul that screaming scared child away. I wish parents would take time to slowly introduce the kid into being comfortable around mascots before dumping them on EB's lap or trying to get Mickey Mouse to hold them. I can't do much more than high five your kid I don't want to get fired buddy so stop shoving them in my face kthnx obrigado.

Here is the very small Japanese furs meet from Anthrocon 2017 on Saturday. They let the whities join in after the did a JP fur only photo. There’s the blue and grey rabbit in the standing row, me in the middle (pink baby yall know me), and the purple and pink otter sitting down.

The rest were all people who travelled all the way from Japan, including my makers. I felt so bad because there was such a barrier and I’m still learning moonrunes

Anyway, the story!
Pre thing- I got my first fursuit when I was 17 (pic related) from someone on Furbuy. A black and blue unicorn. I'm 21 now.

>Been a furry for years now but don't have furry friends, Didn't know about my local community but
>wanted to wear my suit out like all the cool kids seemed to do online
>It's November/December so it's good weather for suiting and family has planned a trip to the zoo
>Think this is the best time, so I go for it
>"Can I wear the suit mom?"
>she looks to her BF and the family. Not like anyone cared.
>Just says "sure if you'll be okay"

>Now at the zoo, they do an event where they decorate it in lights.
>Approach the ticket gates, didn't even think to call before hand
>"Are you here for an event?"
>"Are you volunteering?"
>Spaghetti drops
>"N-no I'm just kind of..."
>Panic.jpg
>Mom speaks on my behalf soon, explaining that I'm a unicorn and I can't talk and that I'm just here to enjoy the lights.
>Woman smiles and lets us through. I am now not ready for the public

>Walking around the zoo
>a lot of people obviously were confused but I did see a lot of smiles
>I had never worn a suit before this so I wasn't used to being blind
>Apparently a lot of people waved but I couldn't see, I felt bad afterwards.
>Kids loved me, but of course some parents were on the defense.
>Stop in one of the cafe's to get water
>little girl waves so I wave back
>Her mom pulls her closer
>I was sad but not surprised

Wallets are always unhappy when it comes to suits.

The finale though-
>The light show on the lake is starting soon so we stop to watch
>Mom's BF is military so he uses a lot of those terms
>"You got kids at three o' clock anon"
>I don't understand and trip on the sidewalk, falling back
>There's now a group of kids and their parents
>We're all laughing, my butt hurts
>Good times
>Then, a weight is on my lap
>A chorus of "awws"
>I'm not ready for this shit
>Freaking out because I already can't see in front of me and it's super dark
>A kid who was about one or two had apparently climbed upon my lap
>I can feel his little hand touch the suit's nose.
>Now I'm not one for kids, but in this instance?
>I kind of stopped feeling cold from the weather, like this kids smile and happiness was warming me
>We took a photo together and then the group left

In the end, I came to understand and enjoy why people fursuit. It's so nice to see people have their days brightened by you, or a child mesmerized and in wonder by the giant cuddly animal.
There were other times I suited but it was more for family events or Halloween. The suit was traded for another and I guess the owner turned it into a Dutch Angel Dragon

Ok, longass furry horror story for October
I did that about furry lifestylers and people who treat fursuits as some object of spiritual awakening and I was kicked off a suitmaker’s patreon. Granted, I was already fixing to drop my support after she told me kitsune were sacred to her (But I’m totes an atheist guyz), bragged because of her anatomy skills, she would have gotten into MIT for biology if her father wasn’t abusive, and accused me of trying to steal her ideas after shopping around for another maker, comparing prices.
She then goes on a tirade to “respect other people’s characters and ways of doing the fandom”, all the while she was in the process of trying to resell an unfinished commission to her patrons she arbitrarily cancelled and refused to give the finished parts to the customer, only partially refunding. The character? The customer’s business mascot. The customer had waited six years and after asking “what’s up”, Mordrude canceled it. Her excuse? “It reminded me too much of my abusive ex, since it started during that time.” So basically, a fursuit project was triggering her. Mordrude is mentally ill, likely Borderline, and will try to run away with your money.

Contests usually dont allow OC, and that's not really what i meant, i meant that there's a group that makes fursuits, and there's a group that makes armor cosplays, and the two rarely intertwine into someone who does both since you would have to have knowledge from both fields. It's just as much expansion of a skillset for a cosplayer to learn fursuiting.
And thanks! That's actually my cosplay from a couple years back. As a cosplayer im more inclined to enter a cosplay rather than a fursuit, even if it's from a known series. Judges don't really appreciate fursuits i believe and often don't assume you made it yourself, plus it's hard for them to guess the amount of work/detail work that went into it.

Yeah, I have no idea why. But if some D-list animation company/distributor spends enough for a costume like this, there's no excuse that more suitmakers don't make a suit for themselves with these features. Besides lack of time, I guess.

Very basic animatronics aren't too expensive to implement. Simple ear motion and eyelids can be setup without too much difficulty, though it is quite advanced.
The real expensive animatronic suits are the ones that use foam rubber and have multiple degrees of motion for the face. That the only thing that moves on that squirrel are the eyelids, jaw, and maybe ears. I have seen furries implement this in their suits before.

soooo many fucking name/tripfags too. most were friendly and helpful. lot of them were annoying.
it's such a nostalgic era to think of though, i remember the billions of kipi threads and the name actually escapes me- but a namefag who cosplayed a lot and stepped into a bit of drama. (lmao who didn't back then though.)

You can wash fursuit heads and the foam easily becomes clean, but of course that's assuming they actually clean their suits, but i'd like to think since most people wash their clothes after they have sex in them they also wash their fursuits. As long as people keep their murrsuits away from the public then I don't really see it as an issue.

As someone who used to strip old fursuits and fix them up for resale I'm calling bullshit on you anon. I don't care how good a job you do cleaning the suit, that shit sinks in and "cleaning it" only serves to push the mess further into the foam. You may be able to clean the surface fur but lol, no the foam never really gets truly clean.
I have seems some absolute shit reskinning old suits, where it was so gross I removed that whole section of foam entirely to replace it with fresh.

However if the suit is purely a sex suit for kicks, that's one thing, but don't be wearing that shit outside of the bedroom and buyer beware you don't accidentally end up with one.

For my own purposes, I'm kinda worried about the whole thing. The character in question has jet engines (can fly, so as a assist) and naturally that involves harnessing for it to look realistic, (Can't just bolt them to where they go and not have it look like a cyborg attachment) but there's that stigma for harnesses coming off as being a sexual thing.
How'd I go about making it look functional instead of sexual? The closest analog to the strapping I had in mind was the 3D maneuver gear from AoT (pic related), but modified for the hypothetical stresses they'd be taking and the anatomy of the character in question.

>which can't be cleaned i assume?
You can technically clean it but the problem with foam is, unless you're going to disassemble the pieces so you can actually submerge the foam and get the cleaner all the way through it, you really aren't cleaning it- only spot cleaning the surfaces. And if you only blot at the outer parts with cleaner you're actually causing the mess to soak further inward.
