I've been a fan of fursuits as a costume thing for a long time but only got into doing it last year. I knew wearing those things was hard work but I never knew how goddamn hard until I wore a fullsuit in the summer

>overrated
Any big name suitmaker who is lazy enough to reuse a tiny selection of headbases so that all their suits look alike are overrated in my book.
>alt-furry
Don't really care, as long as they aren't being twats and threatening to shoot people at a con. That goes for all twats, too.
>first maker, age
24, Temperance, though since it wasn't my own character (artist designed from a batch), I didn't feel attached to it as much so I sold it. Bought my first suit when I was 23, was a preowned suit. Also sold it, again because I didn't feel like I'd use it enough.

Some advice from my personal experience: always make sure to think about the character you want for a long time before going for a commission so your money is worth it. If pre-owned or a cosplay, make sure you like the character a lot because it's expensive.
Currently getting a Zoroark fullsuit commissioned that I'll post here when I get it, probably end of January
I'm probably going to stick with making my own suits after Zoroark or a final commission after that, will save money that way. Unless Qarrezel/Amanojaku is a viable option.

I don't get why more suitmakers make fursuits in this style. I dunno, there's something about pro mascots (both disneyland and thr ones from, say, the Pokemon Company) that a lot of fursuits lack in general and I can't quite put my finger on it. I think it's mainly that mascots actually look like cartoon characters for the most part, while many fursuits (usually from "popumakers") have a samey dog-head-man look about them

Yeah, I'm bummed about her recent work, and her company's work in general (that griffin...). They've even resorted to adoptables for suit design, not even the regular showcase with unique characters. I understand many people were being insufferable twats wanting to have their own Rufen suit, but I think K-line overreacted to this.

>> No.9641826

>>9641821
I suppose, even if the "fits many people" part was taken away, the amount of padding would drive up the price likely above 5k, easily. Still, I don't see how that stops suitmakers from making suits like that for themselves, or adventurous non-makers trying their hands at it. In the end though, I do think suit design has become stale somewhat, though I understand the money issue.

>> No.9641827

>>9641819
In the case if the Disney mascots, it's likely because they design the costumes to be as close as possible to the movie's art style. Many personal suits adopt a more generic body shape with more of a focus on fur patterns instead.
Not everyone likes cartoony looking suits though and prefer them to look more realistic.

Personally I like cartoony suits and some of my favourite western suits are ones like >>9641789 with their super chunky face designs and you can't really see in that photo, but they also have large but simple legs and paws to them. Let me find a better picture.

Yeah, I like those too. Those have a unique design to them that does have a "disney magic" feel to them. I do like realistic suits a lot, if done well. But in that case, a person's proportions has to be correct for rhe suit. There's one suitmaker, Mordrude, who made a snow leapord. She obsesses over realism (and her shitlist of people she decides she doesn't like anymore). A somewhat large man commissioned a snow leapord, and she gave the suit a tiny-ass head (relying too much on a headbase) that made the thing look hilarious.

I don't understand shit like dutchies requiring you to pay a subscription fee to their owner so you can be on the """official""" list of dutch angel dragons and needing to have a character design approved by them or their moderators before you can have a suit made.
I know you can just opt for your character to be a regular angel dragon and just do whatever with the design but it comes off as really snobby and stuck up, like damn.

Japan is rather conservative as a country. Very rigid expectations for middle class and above people, you are expected to devote yourself to your work, and have a normal life to not disrupt group unity. People who are too free-spirited tend to get looked down upon. Personally I see it as a big reason why their economy is in the gutter--the old guard who are in charge are afraid of risks and change. I'll have an answer eventually, it's late there right now after all.

While at the con, they mostly described that they can't be this open about it and they think it's cool that western furs can have meets and be public about suiting. Obviously not everyone is gonna like public suiting but they told me that it's completely taboo over there. They rarely leave the hotel at one of their own furry cons. I also think it's due to the conservative nature of Japan.

My favorite part was that their suiting culture is way different. They didn't care about the "ruining the magic" stuff and took their heads off all the time because of how hot their suits were. Not that I blamed them, I did the same thing. Kemono suits are really not made for casual suiting, remember that kids.

I assume the culture of respect plays a point since how you are viewed by your peers is very important. So even if they don't know who you are, they can still judge.

Heck one of them wants to do fursuit making as a full time thing but he says it's too risky a job in Japan to have.
I told him he'd have a good business with international customers though with how popular kemosuits are in the west

Fursuit newbie here again, can someone explain why the head on this is viewed badly? I think the eyes in particular are very pretty and its a good looking horse head where many toony ones just look horrible and have that sqint-and-its-a-horse look. Craftsmanship also looks excellent overall but I agree the whole lower half is too bloated looking.
And the plastic dragon here >>9642383 looks fucking atrocious as far as craftsmanship, like look at how the head pieces connect to the actual head and how sloppy the eyes are. That would never fly as a competition piece in a cosplay contest. And then >>9641831
these two suits were being praised for their cartoony-ness but they just look poorly proportioned and ugly as fuck. Like seriously, look at the torso to leg ratio. It's like they built the legs first and were like, 'oh fuck' we still gotta attached a body to these' almost like a kid drawing a body part too big on a sheet of paper and having to squeeze the rest in last minute.

I'm not trying to be a dick but I'm trying to understand why some of these things are allowed to slide in fursuits (and are even praised) but shit like that would never fly if it was a costume being made for any other con?

I guess it's either lack of know-how or lack of time, I've had countless personal projects to make suits with ideas similar to what that video has but even going cheaper, I never have enough spare time.

However, I'm also guessing that controling the Disney mascots is actually made by two people, one there, moving the body and someone else moving the animatronic head, did something similar with someone once and it can work pretty well if you practice with your buddy, and that's also how it used to be done for movies.

Other alternative would be having something similar to a motion capture system inside the head PLUS the mechanical part but I guess that could get pretty heavy.

It's not that people are attracted, it's that they appreciate the suit design a lot (and are jealous they don't own it). For instance, those Laki and Loki suits, in my opinion, had a better charm than the newer Rufen suits. Some people though are legitimately attracted to the suits, though, which is weird, seeing as they're bundles of fabric.

Why do some japanese furries just block me on follow, the one who made this suit blocked me and I never interacted with him. Do Japanese furries automatically assume that a foreigner following them is looking for a commission or something?

Ah cool. I still really want to use the kemono eyes.
Oh, you know what would be cool? Making a mana beast to go with it. It turns out I owned that mana beast suit for some time (bought it from the owner), but it didn't hold up very well based on the condition when I got it (it was 6-7 years old at that time. It was one of the maker's first suits, and the fabric color really didn't exist anymore due to changing dye lots. An unfortunate reality with old fursuits. Also, it didn't come with the wings. I tried making them myself, but being a total noob at construction it didn't go well. Still, I'd love to try to make one for myself along with Flammie!

He already blocked me on my main, so I can't view his tweets from there.
Anyway, I've owned an inordinate amount of pre-owned suits, but a lot have been too old and have required too much care to fix. For instance, I at one point owned Ino/Telephone's old Kyuubi quadsuit. I've found that either making a suit yourself or commissioning a character you have a connection with (or waiting to buy that one suit you've liked for years) is the key for ownership longevity.

By not owning them all at once. Money that came from selling one suit went to buying another. I have traded a lot of them, however, so that helped.
The one suit I'm bitter about selling, though, was my first commission from Temperance. It's now owned by a guy in Japan. Fortunately, he wears the suit quite a lot and brings it cons/furmeets over there, so it did go to a better home. She's seeing more use than I would have given her due to my grad school obligations.

She understood my fears (I've been dicked a lot by shitty commissioners cosplay wise and costumer wise as an artist so I'm really wary now) and said she'd tell me by May, then May turned to July then July to August lol. Eventually we did talk and she said she was pretty positive she couldn't make the planned deadline (November) now. I didn't and don't mind anymore, money is a major motivator

I like to pay everything at once so I don't have to remember payments but with how much it was I just like having gurantees. I would have done a downpayment of course if it made her feel better but it seemed like she forgot about our conversations a lot as it was

I've talked to them before on behalf of a friend about commissioning copyright characters and they said that they'd do them, but they'd have to change stuff because of the copyright.

If you're fine with that and shelling out in the least $4000+ (more if you want accurate padding and shapes), then you're good to go!

Personally I loved working with them and they do try hard to make sure you're happy.
Some other warnings though-

JP makers don't really do WIPs, you'll get photos once the body is done and when the rest is done. When you get these photos, they'll ask if you want any changes.
They also kinda work with the fabrics they have so they'll show you your options c:

I recommend just using the Furstar site and getting a premade design if you want one of their canines or dragons. It's a lot cheaper than commissioning them; especially if you get one of their super generic suits (you can tell these by the design template they use. It's like an average dog in a T-pose)

Commissions begin at $3500. They actually send you fur samples and a cute little pamphlet. I can take a photo when I get home

OH, after looking, I'm going to assume they mean the optional padding they have for certain body types.

i.e. for Fuwa (my AA fursuit) I essentially have to wear another bodysuit to pad her out. I paid for this though and it's entirely optional. The average padding they include is the knee and leg ones I do believe, but it might just be the knee padding.

>>9643886
Not that I've ever seen but I wouldn't be surprised if there was one out there.
The Japanese are already very personal about photos and tend to cover the faces of people in the backgrounds of photos or who are not the focus of the picture. Permission is very important over there, especially in the JPFurry community.
There was a hashtag they had running on Twitter a while ago where they'd take a photo of them without their suits but their faces were always censored in some way.

Anyway, here's the stuff within the little package! A folder with the logo that contains all the stuff they send you. The fur samples came in two small book types I assume to separate my options.

There's an English pamphlet now, but mine came with the Japanese pamphlet. Just kinda explains what they're all about. It's a fold out pamphlet so not all of the pages are showing in my photo.
Both fur samples and the quotes come with a picture of your character's fursuit ref. They put a lot of work into this.
Plus, I got my suit in about five months. They have a counter on their main site that tells you when you would get your fursuit

Yeah, the character's a girl but he's a dude. He wanted to crossdress so that he was in character. The boobs are padding from a swimuit I ordered for myself.

The entire convention people either thought he was a girl or a MtF. Even some rando drunks on the street were mindful and would say stuff like "hey, they might identify as a girl you don't know. She's beautiful!" and stuff.

We'll be there next year and hopefully he'll have a bodysuit to boot. Have a photo we found of us on the Pittsburgh paper website lol (cropped the lady out)

It would generally be like a quadsuit, I would suppose. The most important thing is the understructure. Use PVC piping in the legs and body to keep the thing standing. Make sure the piping is all attached in one piece, too, though if you want some range of motion, having "swivels" at the joints might be nice. Some understructure in the head will prevent it from drooping.
That's my take on it, anyway.

I posted about these in the last thread. They're probably among the best western-made dragon (yes I know they're technically wyverns) suits out there. However, if I were to critique them, the tails are a bit too high up so it looks like they're coming out of the back, the legs are too human-like (needs to be shaped so the legs seem to be on the sides of the tail and torso), and there isn't enough curve between the belly and the underside of the tail. If I were really crazy, I'd have made the suits out of leather scales. Still pretty good, though.

>Tail location & leg positioning
The maker's probably used to making non reptilian suits, and didn't bother to adjust the anchor point accordingly. Or they made it really long, realized they didn't want a floor dragger and didn't want to waste the effort of making it. Having a costume be torso -> tail + legs instead of torso -> legs + tail's really difficult, you can't change the wearers bone structure, and no one has enough of a thigh gap to make it work without padding it out with the intention of always having the legs spread slightly. A solution that's rather restricting, plus probably puts stress on the hip joint that it's not supposed to.
>Leather scales
I wouldn't recommend it. Maybe with a really high weight leather, but that for a whole body would be magnitudes more expensive than something cheaper. Pic related has felt scales, and they make a great ruffled feathery look, but aren't stiff enough for scales, and most leathers would have the same problem.
Whenever I redo that outfit I'm planning on using re-enforced foam sheeting instead.

Their airbrush works really good though. Wish I could do that, or find someone locally who'd be willing to do it for me. Anyone know how to go about finding people to airbrush costumes?

Plus the tail, being made with the stilts in mind (and me overcompensating for my own torso dimensions) was made way too fat and doesn't attach to the rest of the body quite right (but miles better than the wyverns posted earlier).
Next time though...

To be honest, the dropped crotch look seems just fine to me. In fact, I may consider doing that for my Flammie and Mana Beast suits. Does walking with the legs out a bit hurt after a while? I mean, I guess sacrifices have to be made for the look (see the kemono suits above, they're hot and lack good ventilation, but they look amazing)
Would love to see this suit a con someday

It's not a dropped crotch, it might look it because of where and how the tail attaches, and the padding widening my legs a bit, but where you see the crotch is more or less where my actual crotch is. (With a little bit of stretch room so it doesn't rip.) I can stand with my legs more or less straight up & down (bar the ~10cm thick total amount of foam between my legs in the way.) so I don't have any standing issues.
If you're somewhere in the midwest you might get lucky, buy I can't imagine wearing it out a super large number of times before I retire it for good and get on with its (hopefully) far superior replacement.

Here's one, taken by someone who couldn't be bothered to tell me that the wing was folded over. I'll dig some more and see if I can find one of the back.
Also impromptu AMA of sorts because they're fun. To start off with:
>>9645732
No,
A: The character, for as dumb as it probably sounds, exists as a extension of my own personality. Someone else owning it would be like them owning a bit of myself.
B: It's a mess on the inside, there's parts that aren't attached right and other parts that are straight up uncomfortable to wear without it sitting in exactly the right spot.
C: Low amounts of unremovable head grease in the head. Fine for me, even at low amounts might gross other people out.
D: Whenever it does get decommissioned for good, I was planning on using the padding for other things.

I don't have any really good pictures showing how the tail connects. I might have to take more photos soon, if I can sort out a camera and stuff.

Not that anon, but thanks for posting all these images, it shows off the shape quite well.
I see what you meant about the non-dropped crotch being just the tail, too. I'm honestly surprised more suitmakers don't do this.

Found this post in an archived thread. It sucks.
"And here I was thinking it was common knowledge as FZSW coined "the" japanese style. Nobody knows what exactly happend but having experienced myself, she probably got touched in improper places what a lot of people do with "hurr durr you sure are a greasy neckbeard under that suit" as reason.

It was the last straw that made her quit the fandom, before that she had issues with western makers making 1:1 design clones and recolors of Laki and Loki (pic related)."
Pic related was a laki ripoff. So all these together are why the maker got rid of her suits.
Also, if I recall correctly, Eixen from K-line moved to Boston a few years back, but was soon stalked by a creepy furry and he quickly returned to Japan. He was that scared. Why are furries such creeps sometimes?

The tricky part is she'd probably need a whole bunch of radio controllers to get them to work. Making a mechanical puppet is complicated, but far easier since you can control things with handles, knobs, and strings.
