Is there any way to make natural short hair look good in lolita? I'm thinking of chopping off my hair because it's super thick and wavy and unruly, but I don't want to look bad.

Depending on how short, I think definitely. Bobs look super cute in lolita as long as they're not pin-straight. But if you mean short as in pixie cut, I honestly don't think there's a way to make it look good. At that point, perhaps just wearing a wig with lolita would be the best option.

There are a few lolitas who have made short hair look really great, but since it's so far and few I can't find any pics of it right now. Pixie cuts are very hard to pull off in lolita, if you were thinking about going that short, but can be done well.

I cut my hair off for the same reasons you stated and most often I wear wigs now since the short is just harder to coord, but occasionally I won't and it looks fine, just not something that will get mass praise like really nice long hair will. I have had a couple coords with my short hair be received very well, though.

Chlora_virgo and mariedauphine are great for shorter hair inspo. There's also a lot lolitas with short bobs, normally with a fringe, and you can't really go wrong there. Maroonsparrow had a really great pixie cut back in the day, but she's not really active anymore.

Have you tried scrunching it with mousse?
My hair has a super inconsistent texture when it's long so I think I must have had it plaited and curled the ends there. If I let it dry normally when it was long it would have messy straight bits as well as ringlets. I had it (badly) layered and thinned out in those pics. I've seen really nice wavy dark hair as well so maybe try some techniques to enhance the curls!

I used to but gave up on long hair and bleach it now anyway. My terminal length was relatively short no matter what I did. Their tricks worked but would only give me like an inch or two more at best :( I hope to get extensions some time.

I think pixie cuts are perfectly fine for lolita, it's harder to find hair accessories that work with it though and it does help if you have a very feminine face. Short hair often makes girls with pretty, petite faces or strong bone structure even more striking. If your hair is between pixie and bob length, there is definitely stuff you can do with your hair, if it's straight be sure to blow dry it, either flaring outwards or inwards to give it some volume, it helps to diminish the disproportion between the petticoat and the rest of the outfit.

That usually happens when you aren't moving the iron enough. You need to rolls and curl it up, not just twist your hair and hold it. It might take a couple turns if your curler/straightener isn't hot enough, but it's still doable as long as you're slowly twisting the straightener.

For the top look I would be more inclined to blow dry bangs over a larger round brush then use a small 1" round bristle brush for the ends

The second look my hairdresser has done on me using a straightener - you basically grab all the hair in the fringe and flip the ends under/slightly to the side as you're running the straightener down. It's a very quick movement at the top and slower at the bottom to get the curl/kink at the bottom. You can also do the blow dry over a round brush bit for the top if you are having trouble getting bang volume (or have super flat hair like most Asians...)

Can any gull recommend some hairstyles/updos that could work for me? I have long (just past my breasts), very thick and quite slippery hair. Most times when I try to follow tutorial the pinned up portions fall under their own weight, or I have to stick so many pins into everything to hold it together that it ruins the look. Is it just a question of practice or am I choosing the wrong hairstyles?

You're probably choosing the wrong hairstyles, using the wrong sort of pins for your hair (a lot of long-haired people prefer u-shaped hair pins for holding updos, not bobby pins) and you may need to use some product if your hair is particularly slippery. Generally, braided updos seem to hold better in slippery hair than ones that are just twists/rolls - so I would look for them.

It'll also help if you don't style freshly washed hair - wash your hair the night before, or depending on how often you wash it, as long as you can before it starts to get too greasy. Dry shampoo could help too.

Mostly when I see people using these combs it's to cover up the elastic bands they used to style their hair, sorta like in >>9639130. For example, if you were doing two braids and tied the ends off with an elastic, you'd use the little comb on the ends to cover it up. I've seen it styled like that with pigtails too. If the girl in the pink dress in >>9628795 had the pigtails up higher on her head, she could cover the elastics with the twin clips instead of a hat. Just snagged this image off the IW website to illustrate if I'm not making sense.

nayrt but if your hair is thin/lacks volume then for most hairstyles, using both combs would be overkill

without volume you'd probably want to stick to one on the side of your head, a big bun with a comb clipped in the front of it, or keeping the comb on the back of your head with a variety of hairstyles e.g.
