General question, might make a thread but I'll see how many responses I get for this first: how many coordinates can you make with one dress? For example, I'm just starting out and one of the basis for my wardrobe were dresses I could wear all year round (though I'd never wear velvet in the dead of summer desu). Honestly, if you're struggling that much, spend a few hours browsing coords and save all the ones that stand out to you as what you want to wear. I think the thing that separates those 'perfect' coords from the more mediocre (but still acceptable) ones is often styling, as well as detail orientation and accessories, but that is slightly less important imo. I've noticed how some girls put so much attention towards their outfits but their hair and/or makeup reads as an afterthought. It's very important to have your entire presentation suit the theme of the coord, it can make things go from ita to cute very quickly. That doesn't mean black lipstick for gothic, very few people can pull this off and application needs to be impeccable, but work out a good, natural looking base makeup that works for you then add little touches that would suit the sub style you're wearing. I understand it's quite a process to figure out how to do makeup that suits one's face shape, skin tone, features, etc, and lolitas are also often inexperienced with typical fashion and beauty trends, but honestly what is popular at the moment doesn't work with lolita anyway so you sortof need to draw inspiration from a number of sources then apply what works for you, personally. I'd suggest the kawaii pateen youtube channel, they have a good variety of makeup styles, for an asian face shape ofc but I'm mostly recommending them for the way they show individuality and cohesion between the styles of clothing and makeup.

I've seen so many girls who photograph beautifully but carry themselves awkwardly, are actually quite large/oddly proportioned but know how to pose, or have poor posture in real life, so they look underwhelming in person. Conversely, I've seen lots of beautiful coords worn by beautiful people who aren't photogenic or don't know how to pose and end up looking sloppy, fat, or underwhelming in pictures. What do you gulls think about really plain, basic lolita? Like, really toned down and almost a bit boring
I've been trying to get into lolita for a while, and I have several dresses (only taobao brands and bodyline though), blouses, shoes etc, but I'm not brave enough to wear it outside, because I feel like it's so flashy
Don't get me wrong, I know that's half the point with lolita, and I do love that aspect, but again, I don't really have the balls for it
I preordered this jsk a few weeks ago along with the blouse in the picture, and I'm probably gonna style it with some sheer tights with flowers or something and a a simple headbow
I know it's really simple, but I feel like I would feel the most comfortable in something like that...

Dunno how to break this to you gently, but dress will never be 'plain and basic'. It's got a lot of detail on it, so honestly it doesn't need a shit ton of accessories to be a pretty dressy lolita coord, unless you're doing OTT. Basic coords are a thing but you need basic dresses to achieve it.

>> No.9628821

>>9628808
That dress is covered in frills and lace, it's nowhere near boring. Don't fall for the OTT trends, your dresses don't need to be printed or worn with three underskirts and a veil to look good.
>I know it's really simple but
Why do you sound so apologetic? Your main "concern" should be spending your money on quality pieces that look good, wearing them well and looking and feeling beautiful in them. Don't seek validation from others, especially not here, you'll never please everyone. Make your new dress work for you and wear it proudly, that's really all that should matter.

I found it really helpful to stick to a small amount of colors and just do coords with 1-3 colors for awhile. I felt like I knew everything after like 2-3 years of lolita but I decided to be humble and go back to basic tutorials and simple coords and it helped a lot. Maybe even start by wearing a full set and slowly go from there with replacing the tights etc to get a feel for the basics.

You might want to sell some of your wardrobe, I ended up selling all the stuff which wasn't one of like 4 colors to make things easier.

At least you know you have the problem, there's no shame in that. What's shameful is being like wondercunt and saying you know your coords are perfect because you've been in lolita 74 years.

I'm not talking about some 16 year old n00b, this is a girl who has (I think) taken some fashion classes and participated in anime convention fashion shows. She's also going to sell her stuff at a major upcoming lolita event (although itas buy all sorts of tacky crap. I'm sure there's a market for the stuff she makes). I'm dealing with a similar situation in my local comm (I wonder if we're talking about the same person?)
Unfortunately I don't have too much advice other than trying to point out specific, small details of a piece that is bad, as opposed to saying an entire piece is bad. For example, I often tell this girl that the lace that she chooses isn't suitable for lolita. Unfortunately she tends to just make excuses and not take any of my (or anyone's) advice, but perhaps if we keep trying, she will learn.

Without giving too much detail or naming names, would you mind saying which lolita event they are participating in? That would tell me if we're thinking of the same person or not!

(a) You have discovered the reason tea parties exist. Congrats. If you can find a comm and regular tea parties to attend, problem solved, that's where you wear the fancy dresses to.

(b) Plenty of brands make dresses that can pass for normie wear. Japanese brands are Innocent World and Rosa Bianca (like another anon commented). Taobao brands are Miss Point and Surface Spell (the other one, not the one that makes long evil queen dresses). If you stalk IW sales the plain dresses sometimes go as low as 70% off, which is pretty close to taobao pricing but the fabric quality is so much better.

If your heart insists on a frilly dress, try looking for secondhand AP _cutsew_ ops. Their cutsew dresses are always much simpler than their regular releases, but with enough frills and details that you'd still feel like a fairy princess. Taobao doesn't seem to offer anything similar.

You'd still get criticized for lacking accessories or having boring legwear with that OTT frilly dress you picked out.

The issue was never that "lolita is supposed to have interesting legwear and accessories", it's the mismatch in styles. You need to put together your coords with an image or feeling in mind that you want to get across, and pick each piece thoughtfully to match that. For instance, if you're trying to convey an image of a magical princess going to a brand tea party, then you'd start with an OTT frilly dress, and it needs to be matched with equally interesting accessories. If you're dressed as the maiden who went out to get milk and doesn't wear bracelets, you need to start with a plain dress and add other things that are plain, but still cute and still match the coord. "Simple" isn't the same as "lazy" or "thoughtless".

If you start out with the frilly dress as if you're dressing like a magical princess, but then switch out dressing like a maid when it comes to accessorizing, it just looks plain confused. Or like you were trying to be a princess but ran out of money halfway. That's what's behind criticism like "not interesting enough", not that lolita needs to be flashy.

>Why would you preorder such a detailed set if you don't like to dress too fancy?
>How can there not be /any/ brand pieces you like yet?
>Do you even own/wear petticoats?

I'd caution against buying any more pieces. just enjoy the ones you have and, if you want, focus on making complete coords with those or just try to incorporate them in your normie outfits.
It's not worth your time or money to build a wardrobe if you identify as such a casual. I'm not even sure if you'd prefer otome, since it's still pretty eye-catching.

I wish liking cute things wasn't frowned upon by normies in the west.
I get poked fun at just by having a hello kitty keychain and wearing pink because i'm 30. I just want to like cute things and wear sweet lolita without being laughed at for "not being a real adult woman" (because obviously being adult means being boring and only liking boring and mainstream normie "grown up" shit). I already got told i wasn't a "real woman" by some guys and even girls due to my small breasts and i'm not very tall/don't look horribly aged like most girls. But whenever guys i meet find out i like cute things even though i say "i'm not into ageplay" they run away because it's weird and they only like "real women".

>they have good customer service when their customer deserves it and actually has the brains to write in about it
The customer shouldn't be EXPECTED to write in about getting a different product than what they paid for. That's not the customer's responsibility. Are you implying that the only customers who deserve to get what they paid for are the people who do Haenuli's job for her when it comes to quality control? It's one thing when you're trying to stand up for some rando that gulls are shitting on for vendetta or funsies, but this is a $200-300 dress you're actively encouraging other anons to buy, just so you can "look at the positive side". Do you really think you're doing anybody any kind of good spinning these kinds of stories just so you can feel like you did a good deed? The gulls who buy the dress and are still disappointed are simply going to come back and start complaining even more about how much Haenuli sucks later on, so even the brand that you're trying to help still loses out in the end.

Just stick to posting photos of dresses with moon phases on them. Let people hate the print if they want, that's what promo pics are for, so people can decide if they actually like the dress.

The story of the girl with the lace dress, Haenuli ended up sending her the model dress because she was out of right lace. This means if you're the second or third or fourth or however-many-dresses-they-sold-th buyer to write in, you'd never get a replacement dress because they don't have that lace anymore. That's why I said it's a terrible story, they delivered a product that doesn't look as good as the promo pics, you have to write in to get the dress you actually ordered, and in the end they're all out of fabric and can only replace the dress for that one e-famous girl and not you. Doesn't sound like an experience I'd want to pay $200-300 for.

I work in customer service and when someone is actually being a worthwhile customer, I think they deserve special treatment because most customers are fucking assholes who don't deserve the things they think they are entitled to. I've seen people cry over $3. That's fucking pathetic. This is a luxury hobby. You are CHOOSING to buy things that you don't have to buy. It's only your own fault if you are unhappy with your choice.

What you're telling me is Haenuli went out of their way for this girl. First come first serve is a thing, you know.

Not everyone gets what they want.

Whatever. Haenuli a thieving whore.

But yeah, moon phases are just that. A motif.

>>9630353
>That's not the customer's responsibility.
For some companies it is. I've had a lot of customer service jobs and if someone didn't come complain, I assumed they were happy with their purchase. Going home to cry on an image board about how you didn't get what you paid for is pretty dumb because you're not going to get anything out of it and you're not gonna get an improved product.

I also feel sometimes my clothes wear me, rather than the opposite, and I just collect pieces I like, and can't match them well because I have not started to make those mental images!
I use dress up apps with photos of my dresses and I noticed I just match things because they match well, but don't have any special feeling or general theme. Time to fix that.

It depends on what you want in life.
From my experience hot guys tend to be super narcisstic especially when they gew up as the only spoiled child of white middle class parents.

Just one of many examples: My sister married a hot guy. He doesn't want her to have kids because it would ruin her looks and her looks are most important to him. Status is super important to him that he has to maintain in front of his group of friends. He also isn't much of a family person, and avoids any social gatherings that don't involve anything "fun". In many aspects he is more of a man children than your average nerdy guy will ever be.
Now that guy is reaching his fourties and he is starting tu put on weight on his belly, his attractiveness will last maybe another 5 years until his personality finally begins to shine through.

Of course there can be good hot guys out there, but women who are attracted to that type of man rarely filter them thouroughly for their personal traits before it's already too late. Another sad turth is that we are all going to age, so looks are not going to be important at all in the long run.

>> No.9630501

>>9630452

It isn't. This guy is writing about some tiny ass fandom centred in US subculture.

Meanwhile, AP and Btssb are about 40-50 years old. That's decades longer than most fandom subcultures. The main driving force is international, not American-centric. We've even survived multiple sociopaths -- talia speaks, the doll fetish girl, Frances, brolita Jenny. We've also tried changing the name of the fashion a couple of times but Lolita just keeps on keeping on.

Nothing about lolita even remotely resembles that article. Guy can stay in the US and out of my hobby, and you can keep him to yourself, thanks.

Not everyone joins the secret santa, I think. I know I won't be, I'm travelling the month before Christmas so that seems like a terrible idea.

Another thing is that a lot of lolitas seem to do more than one substyle, but it's easier to find higher quality stuff that matches classic lolita substyle, like fake antique picture frames or "antique metal" jewellery. So gulls might tick the classic lolita box because they don't want to run the risk of getting Hello Kitty stickers or cheap-looking plastic kiddy jewellery.

See, when I go to Japan I try to dress up more so all the clothes I bring, I'd have to line dry anyway. Sure it's kind of inconvenient, but my clothes would be destroyed otherwise. Japanese women tend to wear camisoles under their clothes so they can avoid as much laundry.

Nujabes is a big deal RIP, he died when I was in high school...which was like 10 years ago. Your bf has gotta discover more artists!
Hip Hop has a solid but kind of small following of people in Japan (compared to hipstery, cutesy stuff, and operatic rock stuff). The thing I appreciate is that a lot of artists make it clear that they are true hip-hop heads in the way that they reference classic tracks and good U.S. artists in their songs.

Luckily, genres like hip hop and electronica have small/cult-like followings in Japan, which helps quality control the music that gets produced.

All this being said, I can't imagine a brand putting out anything but classical and metal inspired pieces.

This. It seems that nowadays, Nujabes and J Dilla (RIP) are bigger in the U.S. and outside of Japan in general. Every time I'm on youtube, it seems like there's a new instrumental hiphop soundcloud (also rip, jesus) artist popping up and being played in those chillout/homework youtube mixes.

Japan and I guess most of East Asia seem to have a growing cult following with underground genres more and more recently, stuff like math rock and shoegaze. I don't think they'll ever surface the mainstream since they didn't do so strongly at its origin points, and the music industry is very bent on making money off of what works like poppy idol groups.

I digress.
Graffiti print would be so cute, but probably hell to coordinate. I'd love to see a Takashi Murakami or BAPE collab (though idk if Kanye would want his likeness on a frilly skirt).

I think I mentioned this here a while ago, but I've always thought it'd be cute to see a(n early 2000s) hip hop fashion inspired coord with Meta's denim skirt, Timberland knee high boots, and a cropped Baby Phat jacket.

I do. I live in a fairly big city and there's tons of graffiti everywhere, I love taking pictures of it and I follow loads of others who do the same on instagram.

I saw some cool stuff when I went to Seattle last year too. They have a lot more stickers than paint.

I'd love to go to NYC someday. I'm sure I will after I go to Japan and Korea first.

Nayrt but I've seen so many 'seamstresses' in my comm who get a big head because people who've never been in the same room with a sewing machine compliment their work, and consider themselves above any and all criticism or advice. Then they get it into their heads to start selling their stuff, find out that nobody wants to pay brand prices for it, and flounce, calling the entire community elitist brandwhores in the process. I love sewing and talking about sewing with other lolitas but the majority of lolitas who sew have no idea what they're doing and see any kind of advice as a personal attack. Not too long ago I was quietly trying to figure out why the scallops on a girl's handmade JSK looked so lumpy, and it turned out she didn't clip her 1" seam allowance. When I told her it was super easy to fix and improve the overall look of her scallops, she and her friends acted like I was bullying her. FFS, I was just trying to help her un-lump her hemline, but if she prefers to stew in her puckered hems and unpressed seams that's her choice, I guess.

Trying to dissuade them from using non-lolita fabrics is even harder, because for many of them looking "unique" is more important than looking good. At least one girl I know is stuck with several dresses made out of orange novelty tablecloth with neon green skulls because even the friends who gushed over her work aren't actually prepared to spend burando prices to look like shit, Halloween or not.

Anyone has relatives/friends that talk to you as if you're completely stupid?
Let me explain myself:
My father and mother dislike lolita. I've been into the fashion since 7 years now yet they act like i'm retarded by telling me "don't wear any of that lolita stuff to your work" or when i'm about to go out they look at me with big eyes and go "don't go to the family party like that on sunday ok?",...
I'm 22, I know when it is and isn't appropriate to wear lolita, and it pisses me off so much that they feel the need to tell me that every single time. Can't wait to have my own place so I don't have to wait they're gone to be able to wear my stuff without anyone bothering me.

>you are 22

there are some parents that think you are still 6 and can+t remember to brush your teeth.

Just give them time. Do audlt stuff, study hard, get a job, move out.
Maybe, and just maybe, they will start treating you as an adult.

And keep Lolita away from them. If they can't understand you are an adult, it will take a lot to understand Lolita can be a serious fashion.

> it pisses me off so much...

this. avoid this. If you over-react to a comment, that is a sign you are not an adult and can't handle criticism.

Remember your parents love you, and they bother you because nobody else will do it. (except normies that think everything is a fetish)

Beat and Hip Hop has roots in jazz.
Maybe instead of graffitti, try to find inspiration in Jazz.
Classic Lolita, Jazzy, modern, more like a Beat from Nujabes or Tomppabeats.
Find inspiration in nature

1" seam allowances? Whyyyyy? I would love sewing specific concrit on my stuff, but I'm one of two seamstresses in my comm-- and I think it's hard to see details like that on the internet. I'm definitely, like probably to a fault even, trying to imitate brand, not be a weird "avant garde" special snowflake seamstress. I feel like there's more ita seamstress with horrible design taste than not, and it's depressing.

Also, what is it with lolita seamstresses and NOT PRESSING THEIR SEAMS? Jesus. I press religiously as I go.

I have a different bag from meta which I use for school. Only the handle is withering a little, but the bag itself is still in good condition and also really strong. (It was already secondhand and I have it for one year now.) The white only gets a bit dirty, which I haven't been able to clean off. But it doesn't have damages. I think you can perfectly use them for school.

Yes, my parents and grandparents are exactly like that.

The year I turned 20 they began to annoy me with constant nitpicking about my behaviour and the way I dressed as everything I did did not seem "adult" enough to them. With 22 as I graduated from uni it completely got out of hand.
They kept telling me I should cut my waist long hair short, because long hair is something for school girls, and employers wouldn't hire me because of that. That I should stop wearing dresses (not just my lolita, even normie dresses), again because of employers not taking me seriously. That I should eat more, because I'm very skinny and young looking and that's not good for women wanting to be taken seriously at the job interview. In their mind I could only become successful in life if I adapted the traits of the tough business woman in every single aspect in my personal life as well. They couldn't comprehend, that a feminine appearance and frilly dresses may be something that I enjoy in my personal free time, but that I'm also capable of separating my personal interests from my professional persona, that I can take care of myself and evaluate situations properly for myself. Only because I enjoy something slighly strange in my free time does not mean that I act as a clown everywhere else.

The best way to deal with that is to ignore their comments and to move away, preferably to another city, so your parents can finally see that you are indeed able to take care of yourself and to be an "adult". But also to compromise, and if your parents really don't like Lolita, just don't dress like that around your family and keep it a private thing. Problem solved.

I don't know! I was going to ask her but she was already crying bully so I decided against it.
I don't know if lolita seamstresses with terrible taste are really in the majority or not, but they definitely stand out more. Someone who's a decent seamstress and has good taste/takes inspiration from brand is more likely to fly under the radar because people will just assume that she bought what she's wearing. Novelty quilting monstrosities, on the other hand, are clearly handmade because no company in their right mind would produce anything like it.
Pressing seams is so easy makes such a big difference! I don't understand why anyone wouldn't.

I'd suggest a greyscale that's colorized for any additional colorways.
If you wanted to ink some b&w photos of tags in the Bronx, or even used your own photos instead of drawing I think it'd look really elegant.
>no better location to inspire you than the literal birthplace of the art

Also, keep in mind that hip-hop is a family of forms:
>rapping
>tagging/graffiti
>cutting/DJ-ing
>breaking
>and knowledge (history; referencing the art that came before yours)

I think if you really focus on one or two good-looking ideas, and don't go overboard trying to make "Hip Hop: the Skirt," this could end up amazing.

When you've got some print drafts, make a thread!! See if you can collab with a reputable indie brand to get good main pieces drafted up, and made.

lolita isn't sexual for me in the slightest.
what it does make me feel is revered, adored, and respected. No one tries to belittle me or objectify me when I'm dressed up. I feel safer, y'know?

Nope, she just didn't want me showing up in a petticoat like a dumbest. It was like no jeans, no t shirts dress code.

If you were royalty you'd likely have many, many more people brutally criticizing your fashion choices, unless you wore very toned down classic and even then you wouldn't please everyone and still get criticized.
I do understand and relate to what you mean though. It's bizarre to me that people look at any style of lolita (maybe except ero) and think it's sexual in any way, I just fail to understand the logic behind it.

I mean, hell, I know dudes that are engineers and shit at 27+ and they play with Legos,Pokemons,...Being adult doesn't mean being boring and abandonning anything deemed "not mature enough", that's such bullshit.
I think it's indeed the best thing, it won't happen before a while but I shall tolerate it in the meantime, the same way they tolerate my hobbies (i'm lucky they "tolerate" it at all, they were strictly against it in the first place and i know friends whose parents hate cosplay/lolita/... and used to forbid them from doing/wearing it)

Definitely. Any time I practice, I look for bars that stood out in an old song to reference.

I really like your idea for greyscale too! I don't think I'll go overboard. I want the print idea I had to come to life which would really just be buildings with graffiti on them - and no sweet colors ways for this one at least. Just want to get the print down which I'm still working on and then find a cut that properly compliments it.

There are other parts to hip hop I know, but like, we could have a vinyl dress eventually too. And jazz definitely could be a thing because I know people love classic and that would be more fitting with that. There's a whole unexplored genre here, however that doesn't mean it'd take off.

I don't care as long as I get my graffiti dress.

Most things that say dry clean only can still be washed. If it can't be washed, steam it.

Sometimes, even if it can be washed, steaming is still vastly easier on the garment, I steam not just my frills but also all of my blazers, coats, wool items, and curtains.

If it can't be steamed, that's when you're out of home cleaning options and you take it to the dry cleaners.

There's bound to be some people like that because of the way they were raised. My germ-phobic, cunty excuse for a mother's laundry style goes like this:

>everything goes in the "cook" cycle (water at 90 degrees celsius)

Result? The color of everything fades, elastic disintegrates, stuff is obviously destroyed, and even white ends up drab gray soon. But we're not done!

>everything goes in the dryer! Hanging washing up to dry is for peasants. So don't even think about buying wool. /blog post
