Old thread: >>9593592

New to j-fashion? Ever wanted to ask a simple question that seems so obvious to other people? This is your chance to ask.

>> No.9620941

I'll start:

How do I see whether a blouse is suited for gothic or not? What makes them special in their own way compared to sweet and classic?

>> No.9620984

>>9620941
Classic and sweet tend to feature Peter Pan collars, accents with sweet themes (heart and star buttons, custom lace with similar feels, etc.), more ribbons, a wider variety of colors, etc. Gothic, imo, is more pared down and features more neutral themes and colors, and high, square, or pointed collars are much more common.

>> No.9620988

>>9620941
Gothic blouses are usually (not always) more mature looking than sweet blouses. The lines are sharper and cleaner, and they're usually just a lot simpler looking. You will see a lot of high necked collars, pointed collars, and square collars...round collars or peter pan collars can still work (look at old Moitie blouses for example) but they aren't as common. In general the details are just smaller and more toned down - you won't see those gigantic peter pan collars or piles of bows everywhere.

A lot of classic blouses still work well with gothic, but there are some differences. For example, you'll rarely see thick torchon lace on a gothic blouse.

Why do people consider bloomers a staple of Lolita? If you're worried your skirt'll fly up just wear boxers, if you need more volume (?) get a better petticoat, if you like the look all power to you, but that doesn't make it anymore of a staple than wearing a wig or wrist cuffs. If there's a proper reason I'm all ears but the those I've heard so far haven't convinced me.

>> No.9623230

>>9623225
They aren't? It's pretty much universally acknowledged they exist not to flash people, and if you wear something else like biking shorts or athletic shorts than fine. People like them for the aesthetic, and in old school it can be part of the look to have them peak out the bottom

>> No.9623302

>>9623225
I think bloomers as a staple is really a personal choice, but I don't think I ever really feel like a coord is complete without them. They help me feel cute. Plus, they protect your butt from Marilyn Monroe moments, protect your legs from scratchy petticoats, prevent sweaty thigh rub, keep you warmer in the winter, add a miniscule amount of poof, and in some situations, look great when they're just long enough to peek out from under the skirt.

Are ponytails allowed in lolita, specifically classic? I remember reading a little bit ago that ponytails weren't allowed, and I realized I don't see ponytails all that much. I feel a bit ita now, since I always wear ponytails cause it's what suits my face best :P

>> No.9625650

>>9625633
I think that was a thing because ponytails are generally regarded as too simple and casual, but if you have a fringe and wear your hair in a high ponytail with a bow or flower hair comb on it, it could be really cute imo. Even more so if you take the time to curl your hair beforehand, or otherwise style it. You shouldn't just tie your hair in a ponytail and call it a day, basically, you should put a little bit of effort and add details to make it work.

Depends on the style of the dress/skirt and the cut of it.
A line works really well for Gothic & Classic but sometimes also for Sweet (usually the more old school styled pieces).
I find highwaisted cuts usually work better with a-line for example.
Same goes for cupcake or bell, usually used for Sweet but sometimes works really well for Gothic.
Sometimes an A-line petti works nice under a cut intended for a cupcake, but cupcakes generally look awful under cuts intended for a-line pettis because the skirt isn't full enough and don't have the rounded appearance at the hem if that makes any sense?

This post http://thelolitaguidebook.tumblr.com/thebasics could be very useful for you anon.

Amavel, though there are a lot of taobao replicas floating around. Check the tag while buying.

You can usually tell when you actually wear a bell or A-line with your dress. A bell will make it look overstuffed at the top if it's meant to be a-line, and a-line will make the top look deflated/flat if it's meant to be bell.

Here’s the Lolita handbook: http://lolita-handbook.livejournal.com/

Here’s the Lolita Guidebook: http://thelolitaguidebook.tumblr.com/

The older handbook is much easier to read, and I still recommend it for a faster, easier overview of the fashion (along with the Wikipedia page on Lolita). As for the guidebook, bookmark it so that you can come back and look up stuff later, I don’t suggest reading it all in one go.

For communities, make a facebook and join rufflechat and closet of frills (and that other daily lolita group). Blogs, I recommend lolita tips (http://lolita-tips.tumblr.com/)) as someone helpful to newbies, and rolli’s ramblings (http://rolisramblings.blogspot.my) writes a blogpost roundup, which is a nice way to discover what other girls are doing.

As for actually building a wardrobe, there’s a lot of different approaches. My suggestion is to simply take the plunge and go for ONE single coherent outfit, with a dress that you actually like, in a colour you love. Once you get that on, you can judge for yourself whether you actually like wearing it, or it’s great but you’d rather wear another substyle/colour/theme/cut, or you like everything and want more of it. When you’ve got a few of these things figured out (like whether you like skirts, your preferred colourways, etc), then it becomes much easier to start envisioning what kind of wardrobe you *really* want, instead of what you imagine you want based on some internet chat, and to build towards it.

It’s pretty much a cycle of shopping, coording and meetups after that. If you have trouble building your wardrobe you could look up fyeah lolita, who has a few blogposts on it, or you could look up how to build a capsule wardrobes and apply that to lolita. I’d say pretty much the first one or two years is going to be about finding out what you actually like, so you might end up buying and selling stuff, it should be much smoother sailing after that.

Yea, I saw the argument over blouse vs non blouse, and it was written at a time when everyone was giving taobao the side eye since taobao still sucked at that time.

Can't really think of a place where something basic like lolita outfit anatomy is laid out for newbies to look up, though. Except the Lolita Handbook, and that thing is already a decade old.

>> No.9630483

>>9630476
I don't have time to look for scans now but Kera and GLB have had pages about the "anatomy" of a lolita coord a bunch of times and Misako made a book for beginners.

About the tumblr guidebook, I find it a bit ironic that a lot of gulls recently complain that newbies don't treat lolita as a fashion and focus too much on the rules, when the guidebook with the most rules was made by cgl.

So a few questions: how does Tenso work? Do I need to email them that I made a purchase that will arrive in a few months? When it does arrive to them, will they email me to pay shipping or will they auto-charge my credit card? Is there anything that could go wrong that I should be prepared for?

>> No.9630719

>>9630700

You just ship it to your Tenso address. They use the T-xxxxx number in it to match your package up with your name, then they'll register the parcel and it will show up on your My Page. When you arrange to have it forwarded to you they will calculate and charge shipping and handling fees, after you've paid they'll ship it out.

Your first package needs to be to the address you used to verify your identity, so use something with an address you can actually receive stuff at.

Japan Post won't touch anything with alcohol (flammable), not even empty perfume bottles. So be careful with toiletries.

Some things like books (GLB/Melt/Eternita) and canned drinks/food can be really heavy. Books I'd recommend buying direct from Amazon.jp instead of through Tenso/rakuten.

What else. Ah, everything between checking out and Tenso is up to you to handle. Use google translate and buy responsibly. Do not accidentally check out with Cash on Delivery, it's the reason Ailand (Liz Lisa) has blocked Tenso addresses completely, too many noobs did that. Also do not bother trying Tenso with IW's Japanese site or Btssb, they want payment via Japanese bank methods. Not every site will accept foreign CC.

A minor gripe, but they seem to overcharge the weight. Packages that are under 200g on one site will end up on Tenso as over 200g. I find this really annoying, but if you want to use them for whatever reason you'll have to make your peace with it, or find another service.

>>9630678

JetJ has a lap blanket of their library print and another of some pink cherubs.

Btssb has an Usakumya hoodie-shawl-lap blanket in one of their mooks. Actually they also have a white Usakumya blanket shawl hoodie thing up right now, if you want to count that.

I also once came across a taobao shop that was half filled with printed blankets and one lolita actual print dress release. Not sure if that counts.

You don't need to notify tenso that you bought something, they know it's "you" by a number in the address. They'll email you that they received it once it's there. From there you pay shipping based on whatever shipping method you want/when you're ready. You can also consolidate packages but they charge 500 yen(I think?) to do it. I've never had a problem using tenso but I don't use it too much.

>> No.9630727

>>9630700
Once you've registered and have obtained your address you can use it for shopping straight away. You don't need to do anything until they email you that they've received your package. At this point you can either have it shipped to yourself straight away (at which point you'll pay for shipping + Tenso's usage fee, they will not charge you beforehand) or wait until you have a few more packages to consolidate them into a single one.

The only thing you have to be mindful of is making sure you put the address in correctly, really.

Tea length dresses don't normally require a huge amount of poof because that'd make them look too much like ballgowns plus the amount of fabric usually doesn't allow it. That petticoat looks okay, but I'd go for a slightly shorter one.

4chan will hate on someone just because they're fat when a skinny person wearing the same coord will get a pass.

But at the same time, japanese sizing is super restrictive (and Japanese women tend to wear their weight differently), so if you're set on classic Japanese fashion brands, it will take a significant amount of work to find things that are fully shirred, made from stretchy fabrics, etc etc etc.

If you're ok with branching out to non-Japanese brands and/or paying more, lots of taobao brands will make custom sizes, and I've seen some indie brands start to venture into plus sizes. The flipside is that it's then hard to find any of this stuff second-hand

Probably a really dumb question, but I've been wondering for a while.
Cutsew JSK's are fine with lolita, even if they are very plain, but at what point does it be okay to wear what looks like a fancy skater dress? If you have a skater dress and it's sufficiently fancy/ tailored to fit the lolita aesthetics, does that become okay to wear with lolita?
I know a lot of skater dresses now days are made out of swimsuit material, but ignoring those as I'm talking about the nicer cotton ones, coz I've owned nice cotton skater dresses and I've seen some smaller brands releasing cutsew JSKs that look like a skater dress with cotton lace. I would skater dresses are too short for Lolita. If you put a petti underneath, even a small one, the skirt portion will be very short or you will see the petti peaking underneath. Most jfash, even the kind specifically designed for men is rather feminine by western standards, but i'd suggest you look into Aristocrat fashion, Visual Kei, Mori boy, Ouji (which is the masculine counterpart to lolita), as well as japanese punk and street fashion styles but I don't know if there's a particular name for those. Google 'harajuku fashion male' or something similar and you should get a good variety.

Hi, this is the first anon that you shut down and said everything i recommended to you was crap. Seems you finally did some searching on your own and found the variety of styles japan has to offer.

If you're looking to buy, sites like closetchild sell second hand clothes, mostly punk, lolita, gothic aristocrat and more and that will also give you a good idea of the pieces you'll need to build your wardrobe. Mori Boy is a lot easier as it's less confined by rules than say, lolita, the only ones being that natural fabrics, cottons, yarn, is used, preferably as part of the whole outfit but that's up to choice. It's literally only because you can skimp on tailoring and it hangs exactly like it would on a hanger. It's been said thousands of times. Anything meant to expose the body is going to be at least a c-cup. Don't get me wrong lolita looks best on people that actually fit into it well, but you don't have to play into misconceptions.

Tim Gunn would find you very unlikable. Also, literally none of what you said is true, you just sound upset and ugly.

Speaking of secondhand shops does anyone know some non-lolita ones for brands like milk, ahcahcum muchacha, aymmy and the batty girls, jouetie..?

This isn't really related to J-fashion but where to cop a good Edwardian corset? Or at least a corset to mimic the shape?

I have an Edwardian dress that I want to wear, but I don't want to look like one of those basic bitches wearing it with ann taylor sandals. Already have the other underthings but now need a friggin corset.

I have no idea, they might just be having a moment in Harajuku right now.

Don't know about the others, but MILK is a lolita staple in Japan and it's sold in basically every secondhand store.
You might also find the other brands in "other"/"offbrand" sections of the same shops, occasionally. But it's easier to go with what >>9640058 said.

That's usually the girly stuff though. I know the lolita shops and auction/market places but there must be shops that 'specialize' in other harajuku brands or jfashions.

No offence but why does it feel like cgl has way more unwritten rules than other boards?
