I'm thinking about getting an airsoft/replica M249 and was looking for some help.

Pic related is the version of the M249 used by Homura Akemi, which is the cosplay I'd be using it for. I'm not too much of a gun enthusiast, but it seems to be the Mk 46 version with the Mk II stock.

I don't care too much about exact accuracy, I just wanna make sure it's a version with the recognizable elements (belt box, tripod, solid stock). Main problem is that most airsoft versions of the M249 are full-metal and really expensive.

So really what I wanna know if there's somewhere I can find cheaper, plastic or non-functional replicas. It'd be cool to have a metal version, but I can't really see myself shelling out $300-600 for an airsoft gun that I'm gonna use as a prop for one cosplay and otherwise have in storage.

I went with an m240b for my Homura cosplay, since I figured 7.62 would be better for witches than 5.56, and because it's more fun to shoot. I didn't have the money for a replica so I just tried to make a shitty one from foam. And since I wasn't able to find schematics with all the measurements I kind of had to use a .308 round to try and estimate the measurements from different parts.

>> No.9635021

>>9634927
Well damn. I might just end up making a foam version as well since I doubt I'll be able to find an affordable replica. Luckily I own the RAH so I can use the accessory as reference and scale up the measurements.

I've actually already done Homura but only with a Deagle. I wanted to expand my options for props since I really like wearing the costume. I was torn between the M249 and AT-4 with those being the other "iconic" arms she uses, but the AT-4 would be a pain to carry around even if it would be easier to make a prop version.

If I end up making the M249, my next con will be Rambo Homu for half a day, and then Moemura for the other half with the Deagle and a driver club.
A footnote: I was doing a little more research on the Madoka wiki and they list her SAW as a generic FN Minimi while the RAH specifically refers to it as an M249. Further analysis seems to confirm that it is indeed a customized M249 Mk 46. I guess she replaced the hand guard with a tri-rail even though she doesn't have anything attached to it. I'm not a firearm enthusiast, so I didn't realize at first that the front guard was modular.

If you're going for the "Curved plexiglass" look like pic related, Try buying plexiglass and forming it around a frame made of wood, or pipe. Or buy a thin sheet of metal, and curve it to the proper shape and have your plexiglass either glued/screwed to the metal
If you want a "Solid Ballistic" look without carrying a solid hunk of metal (exactly what a ballistic shield is) try buying a solid square of wood and sand it down smooth. Then paint the shit outta it

>> No.9635358

>>9635249
For the latter it might be better to sandwich wood dowels between two layers of foam, set this structure over like 3 stairstepped planks lengthwise, and then heatform the foam to make a really lightweight piece.

/cgl/ i have a dilemma. I'm making a Naked Snake (as in MGS3) cosplay for halloween (also coinciding with mangacon in my town) and now all i need is the uniform. On the one hand, i could get a Tadpole tiger stripe advisor uniform which is a spot on repro of what he wore and would also allow me to do an apocalypse now impression. On the other hand, I have always wanted to get a taiwanese marine corp uniform in taiwanese tiger stripe (pic related) which would be period and theme correct but not as accurate as could be.
Both are almost the same price, but one is a repro and the other one is genuine. Should i go all out accurate or take this chance to get a semi-rare item that may do the trick to the untrained eye (you help me determine that)

What do

also in general tips for cosplaying naked snake are welcome

Big Boss will likely be recognizable regardless of the minute details on the fatigues, but I'd personally go with accuracy for a costume that has very few necessary elements to make it recognizable.

Ultimately it's up to you. You can go period-accurate and style on MGS nerds with how your military knowledge is better than Kojima, or you can try to make the costume as true to the game as possible.

I just went with a size medium, which was the same as my other gas masks. Medium would be the best bet if you're really unsure of sizing. Yeah, the Bose CVC headset liner is functional. It's an active hearing protection headset, so when you have it on it feels like you aren't wearing it at all. Just unscrew the side earmuff cover panel, pop 2 AA batteries into the non rechargeable battery slots, and you're good to go.

Incoming Blogpost:

I've been to a couple outdoor events, as PW Big Boss, and a few old people thanked me for my service. I VERY quickly said "No, I'm not in the service" and explained what was happening; and they kinda chuckled.

I went to one con, though, that was being held in the old JC Penny space at a nearby mall. Everything was well and good, until I got in line for a pretzel. A woman walked up to me, and said "Would you die for that uniform?"
"Excuse me?"
"Would you die for the uniform? Would you go to a foreign country and fight and die for that uniform?"
"Uh, these are just BDUs, not a full uniform. And these are 'Nam-era, so I really wouldn't have a choice, I guess?"
So she stormed off.
Not 5 minutes later, an old dude walked by, wearing a USMC Veteran hat. We made eye-contact, so I snapped him a little salute. When he returned it, I said "Oorah, sir." to which he replied "Semper fi, never die." and kept walking.

tl;dr people are fucking fucking weird and picky.

Well I went and bought a sage CWU-27/P anyways. The seller didn't really know what it was and knocked it down to $11 shipped, so I couldn't really say no.

What I did was use 1 1/2" PVC couplings to adapt the tank to the mask. I cut the tank's mask inhale/exhale regulator off and replaced it with a barb which is screwed into a brass fitting which itself is screwed into a pvc fitting on one of the T bone adapter's sides. The other side has a piece of pvc (used a grinder on the inside to make it fit over the odd pitched threads) cut at an angle to accept another piece (broken off in the pic) that is meant to mimic the inhale/exhale valve. Don't use spray paint to paint it. You'll end up with a flaky mess. Use a coating of gray Plastidip instead.

So for any of you XOF dudes interested in actually getting an ABA vest, I did some quick digging and I came across this place on FB and VK called Squadron that does custom work for a shit ton of old-gen stuff. Their quote for one $280 which is honestly pretty damn steep for a replica, but ABA vests seem to have really shot up in price so I guess it's not that bad and people on this board have paid more for less.
Has anyone here actually heard of them or had any previous experience?

American Body Armor (ABA) is the name of the company, which made things ranging from LBVs like that to leg rigs and actual soft armor meant to go under LBVs and clothing, which is pretty much all they do nowadays. The vests themselves have been out of production for at least 15 or so years with the widespread acceptance of MOLLE/PALS, were bought in small contracts for SF groups such as SEAL and VBSS teams (also SWAT teams for larger metropolitan police departments in probably even smaller amounts), and since they have that SEAL connection it means that they demand stupid high prices on the collector market; think like people paying over a grand for an AOR1 6094A or a set of AOR1 G3s because they have genuine Afghan dirt and SEAL sweat on them. Plus they can charge these crazy prices because the only company that made replicas (Other than the aforementioned Russian made to order shop) stopped making them about ten years ago, and it's really hard to find a suitable substitute if you ask the other XOF cosplayers, or 90s reenactor/collectors.
They honestly shouldn't cost that much and should be more in the $150~$200 range, but that's just how it do.

Also IBAs don't really bring images of dudes in flight suits and bicycle helmets rappelling up the side of hijacked oil tankers off the coast of Africa.

Copy cat XOF guy from before here, think the black hawk vest is 'good enough'?

>> No.9708116

>>9707864
Honestly for cosplay it's more than good enough, and spending close to or over $300 for a prop is pretty hard to justify when you've already got something that's 95% there. It's not like you're doing some shit like a Tachanka cosplay with like an IBA or something.
If you were doing an impression of 80s VBSS though then that'd be a different story, and it'd be pretty farby if you were using anything but an ABA.

Bit of a mix between anime cosplay and military cosplay, but I had an idea for a costume

Right now, I'm thinking of cosplaying as Sasuke Uchiha if he were a U.S. Army soldier in The Korean War. Cringe-inducing, I know, but it's partly as a joke and partly for an upcoming anime convention where I live.

From what I can gather, the uniforms used in Korea were very similar to the ones used in World War II, and a lot of them were olive drab green.

So, I need to find some OD Green Army Fatigues and a Sasuke wig. I know I can get the wig online, but where would be a good place to find affordable vintage olive drab fatigues or more likely, modern reproductions thereof?

Pic semi-related.

Addendum to this post: Do they make a reasonably-priced airsoft replica of the M1 Carbine?

I know they make decent-priced replicas of the Thompson M1A1, which was used in Korea at the time, but the M1 Carbine was far more common, so it's my primary choice.

If I can't get an airsoft M1 replica, I'll go for the Thompson.

I also just stumbled across this one on Evike. It lacks the grid stitching of the other two and the art, but it does come with a drop leg harness already; although you might just want to make your own if you want to be super accurate since the art doesn't have any snap buckles.

I'm planning on doing a Snork cosplay from STALKER, and I was wondering what kind of trousers would work best for it? The con is in less than a week, and I'm already planning on just using an old marine corps skivvie shirt since I don't have enough time to order a telnyashka .

>> No.9738001

Best case would be Flora BDU pants, but some US M81 BDU pants could work in a pinch as long as you dye them darker and get them all grimy looking.

I only really have plain OD green, Flecktarn, and several sets of woodland and desert MARPAT. I figure I could get digiflora and a telnyashka in time for a later con, but for this one it's pretty much a closet cosplay.

I'm going to my girst con soon. O plan on going as an EFSF solider. The con does not premit guns or even very realistic replicas. Donyou guys thinknill be able to get away with carrying my luger in a enlosed holster? The holster looks the same with or without the pistol in it.

If it looks the same, why bother taking it with you?
Don't fuck around anon. In the end you just make the rest of us look bad. If that's the con rules, it's the con rules. So don't do it.

Honestly just get some foam core or matting and trace out a luger from it. Plus the EFSF pistol isn't actually a luger, and if anything it's closest to an APS Stechkin if we're going by the original Gundam.

Well im gonna cary anyways. I carry in all sorts of places I'm not suposed too. I was planning on dringing the holster since the color matched the rest of the outfit.

Yeah luger is more Zeon, but the holster is going to be part of the uniform anyways.

Hey so I was doing my biweekly sweep of eBay for ABA vests for my XOF cosplay and I checked this dude's store again. The same workshop that makes that ABA vest replica I was talking about last month apparently also makes replicas of the holster from MGS3/PW now.

Anyone can do what a maid does but you're not risking your life when you dress up as an army man. It really makes me cringe when I see army cosplayers "being in character" like dude you're embarrassing yourself stop it. and my head isn't in my ass? how can a head fit in a ass idiot.

if you were a true fan of the series you would do some research and would know that even though it's a character they are part of some kind of army or organization. if they died in the game/series they don't come back. even those that survived still risked their lives so by pretending to be them you're taking their fame without actually putting your life on the line.

Yes. Fictional characters risk their live all the time. Why would it be any different if the character is attached to any kind of military?

It's a character. Nobody is taking anything from a real person. And now get out of this thread.

>> No.9739396

>>9739386
If you dress up as the character people will associate their accomplishments with you, but you don't deserve them. It matters if they're attach to any kind of military because then the character will be doing what you're doing and stealing honor which is a no no. I would never be a fan of some game/series if the mc turns out to be a phony.

>> No.9739406
