I make stuff and have fun crafting. I've been a bit busy lately since Im in the middle of con season but my last con for the summer is coming up next weekend so after that I'll have a lot more time to post and experiment.

I feel bad I had to google what SFS meant haha... I have a decent amount of followers but I dont think my following is that impressive, its definitely on the low side if you look at other crafting/pin instagrams. However I run my instagram completely organically, so I dont do any SFS or botting. I think running it organically is better anyways since you have more people following you that genuinely like your stuff instead of a bunch of bots or people looking for likes on their own stuff or follow for follow.

I can barely manage to post three times a week...
Should I start posting more stuff like selfies and detail shots in between coords to bump up my posting frequency? I don't want to be annoying or seem vain. I've also seen people space out different photos of the same coord over multiple days but that feels a little artificial to me because those photos were clearly taken at the same time.

Depends on how you view your feed vs number of likes you want. When I post several photos together they always get significantly less likes for some strange reason...

I don't have a preference either way but it's 100x better than when people make collages. I enjoy looking at nice quality pictures, not pictures meant for ants. I like making multiple posts, but to avoid being too spammy, I'll group multiple images in one post based on the theme or content. For example, if I take a bunch of pics at a meet, I'll maybe make 3 separate posts for pictures: 1 for coord shots, 1 for food, and 1 for other people's outfits or the venue. I have no idea how it affects reach or followers though.

As for my opinion of people who post more than once a day, I dont mind at all unless its selfie spam.I would say that 3 times a day feels like the limit for me (as a viewer). Anymore than that would feel more spammy. And I feel like the instagram algorithm favors those who post more frequently unfortunately.

The tips that that link suggests do not work unless you're a company trying to push products onto people. Their like ratio doesn't matter because they're not looking to sponsor people; they're the ones doing the sponsoring. Posting that many times a day reflects badly on your like ratio, which is what really tells you the value of someone's instagram account. If you follow what he says, you'll end up like those accounts that have 10k followers but barely even 200 likes per photo. Your account will also stagnate faster in terms of growth. An example of this is https://www.instagram.com/hmao_owo/ . She spams photos, has over 110k followers, and her average likes per photo is around 6k. That's really low for someone with her size of audience. A good ratio should be at least 8%, and a growing account should have around 10% or higher. Companies tend to look for people who have 8% or higher like ratio when choosing who to sponsor.

I posted in one of these back in February(?) when I just started my account and have a much better idea what I'm doing now. I try to keep a pretty even split of more popular vs obscure characters and selfies vs professional photos.
I'm always looking to improve my account, so let me know if you have recommendations!

General question- what do you do about unsolicited reposts? I'm usually fine with it as long as I'm credited, but I find it really uncomfortable when a semi nsfw account or something reposts a photo of mine, even (especially?) with credit. I've just ignored it thus far.

I have 700~ followers ( lower, but everytime i reach 700 i lose followers) with an average of 100 likes a photo ( 150 for love live / good photos with unpopular photos/casual coming in at around 70-90)

Maybe I'll try and be a bit more confident with lower likes, ( though at lower numbers a ratio is so much easier so maybe not too confident.)

8-10% like ratio isn't considered good until you have at least 5k, anything under that should be getting a higher like ratio. Back when I had around 1k followers, I was consistently getting around 200+ for average photos and 400+ for good photos, and my account grew pretty fast.

Oh well, my account growth is pretty dead and half my followers are inactive (as I took a year long hiatus after hitting 200 ~ followers, so that's 200 dead followers.)

Guess all accounts are different, I know one girl who has 500 followers but gets 300 likes a photo, where as I average at 120.

Yeah your ratio sounds pretty bad, i have a 5th of your followers and 25% of my photos have more interaction than that. It may be the same as mine about just having a lot of inactive accounts now, or that you're not posting regularly enough.

It just means that your followers are no longer active, or they don't have an interest in what you're posting. Having less interaction on posts is inevitable if you've built your followers up slowly, because not all people consistently use instagram, and some of them forget who you are and why they follow you. Especially with the new(ish) algorithm, it's harder to get seen if you don't already get a decent amount of likes. If you see something that gets more likes, then tailor your content to have more of that. Like you said, selfies get the most interaction, and therefore are a good way to build following. I've personally never done s4s, but if you do know someone who is already popular and they tag you, of course your followers will go up. A very important thing is that if you have a post get a lot more likes than usual (and as a result, you get many followers from it), posting similar content consistently (once a day for the next few days) will boost your numbers because all the new followers from that particular photo/post will be interested in the similar ones, and will interact with the similar ones, causing instagram's algorithm to feature you more.

As far as repost question, it's just nagging me since there's a pantyhose fetish account that keep reposting any pictures I have with shorts/skirt and it just skeeves me out a tad. No shame on anyone who has/caters tot hat fetish, but I'm a little paranoid about keeping my image clean. Was even hesitant to post my KazeKi cosplay due to source material.

I've had my instagram for a year and started being active fairly recently. I've been posting about once or twice a week and i'm slowly getting followers. I'm sort of worried because i'll be returning to school in the fall and wont be able to work on cosplay as much/have to money to go to as many cons as this year, does anyone have tricks to help keep an account active when you don't have that much new content? i think that I could keep posting weekly for a few months with my backlog but things are going to get repetitive really fast. idk is this gonna kill any shot I have at growth? i'm not aiming to get famous or anything just to a respectable 1-2k

Repetition of costumes doesn't kill you, but make sure you vary it up. I try and not post two photos of a costume in a row ( or more) unless said costume is extremely well recieved.

Another trick is that if you have photos that you like, but were posted a long time ago, archive them and repost them. I've been doing that with shots that I love, but only had 50 likes due to being posted when I had 300 followers not my current 600. ( and they all basically doubled in likes, making my account seem much stronger.)

You can report accounts that repost your photos without permission, they'll remove the images or even the account. If they just remove the images, just block the account, but they are really fast to remove, I reported someone who reposted one of mine and the images was gone in like 10 minutes.

Sooooo does this just vary from photog to photog and this one's particularily picky about it? Is this a recent development? Do they get a free pass bc photographer friends? Or is there some specific overarching insta ettiquette I've been missing in regards to shoot photos?

I've never heard any other photogs I've shot with say this, and on occasion openly say the contrary (they're yours to do with as you please, just credit + approve major edits), but now I'm a little worried I've somehow been pissing off photogs for years. If anyone knows of an easy way of fixing this on old photos too without completely reposting through some app I'd appreciate it too.

I've only ever heard photographers complain when they're not credited, or when someone does credit them but slaps an ugly-ass filter on the photo making it look like shit. Slight cropping is just something that happens on Insta. If you don't want it, tell people not to repost the pics on Insta. I have about 350 followers with average likes of ~90 per post, however I rarely get new followers except when I have group selfies, which often results in getting upwards of 200 likes. However, I don't want to be only posting group selfies because I don't always have group shoots in the first place...

I try to use up the 30 hashtags on each post.

I only follow/like accounts that I genuinely like the content of but I've definitely noticed that I often get 2-3 reciprocal likes and sometimes a follow from someone after I like/follow them. It's a way to bring yourself to someone's attention, but I don't think you should expect anything from it. My Insta was slow at the beginning of 2016. Then I noticed my Lewds photos got more attention. This year alone I've gained 2k+ followers, was getting an average 400+ likes per post. But now I'm getting 100+ likes per post. I haven't changed anything I still post every 3-4 days.
I go through my followers and delet bot accounts. I've never paid for followers or Insta for a higher reach!
So I don't understand why all of a sudden my Instagram traffic has slowed right down.

Post consistently, follow a theme, make sure your photos look nice (great coords don't get followers as well as well photographed coords do), and use the right tags. If you don't dress up all that much, take lots of detail shots and post them over time. I ran a full fandom blog, not just a cosplay blog, which helped. I don't think anyone on tumblr follows people just to see a single pic every three or four days of whatever someone's product is (whether that's cosplay, fashion or crafting). Now that I think of it, it was probably more involved than running an instagram, but it seems far more enjoyable imo. I'd rather organically interact with people more often than try to reverse engineer algorithms just to get a few followers.

Personally I've found Instagram easier to make friends on because of the commenting system. Posting on Tumblr feels like I'm sending photos into space and even if it gets reblogged it's for that person's blog and there's no interaction. I also like that for a lot of people, Instagram is more casual, so they will post things from their daily lives so I feel more of a connection with them and I can comment on their pet or food or whatever.

Anyone have any ideas for (potentially cheap) lighting I could buy? I'm really inexperienced with this stuff and searching for lighting fixtures brings up so much shit that I just don't know where to start.

Personally I wouldn't follow somebody whose feed is unpredictable unless I knew them/cared about them. In your case I'd only follow if the jfash pics you took really interested me, but if they were subpar then that on top of the architecture would turn me off. I was thinking about having the middle column a selfie column and the surrounding columns cosplay photos with a white border. The selfie column well help me be able to post more as well. Any other grid visual ideas for a cosplay account?

Right now i´m trying posting 3 of the same cosplay photos in a row (so same character/cosplay, not exact same photo), but I´m not convinced it´s good for engagement. I´ve looked at other cosplayers doing this and see really mixed results. Any input?

That would be cute if you could consistently get 3 diff pics of your cosplay each con. I have a hard time remembering to take pics sometimes. Posting 3 times a day seems like so much to me as well. I made a private account to make test feeds. Here's what I had in mind.

Can I get feedback on this layout idea? Should I do it? Or is it boring seeing the same cosplay 3 times in a row. Cause if so I can go back to posting my cosplays spread out

I really like the idea of having a nice, scrollable profile, but I've also been on IG for years and have 200+ posts, so I don't want to nuke the whole account. Maybe I can just... clean out the old shit and start posting with a nice layout in mind from here on out... or will it look too sloppy for the coordinated feed to just stop part way down my profile?

Also curious if people dislike following accounts that post more than one type of thing? For example, I mostly post photography these days, but I want to post my own cosplay, too, when I start finishing pieces.

Gulls, I need help. I moved into a new apartment and want to start taking jfashion and instagram more seriously. But my window is too tiny and high off of the floor to get good lighting from the waist down. How do I counter this? Wouldn't a lamp overpower the natural lighting and make weird shadows? Would some kind of reflector help?
