Old Thread saging into oblivion >>9466571

WW has been on a roll adding a bunch of old school items to their main site and to their account on LM. Somebody hit the BIN on a btssb cake purse seconds before I did. One second it was there, the next it was sold out. I miss the old cake bags and cake hats.

Anybody have any old school lolita twinning/coord matching photos?

Whenever I go to the old school threads I feel like modern lolita is not only lacking a lot of originality but also the former intended doll vibes. Like, back in the days you were supposed to look like some Victorian porcelain doll. But nowadays especially with ott classic everyone looks like they're wearing literal character cosplays

Dont let your rose tinted glasses cloud your judgement anon. Old school definately had its wacky OTT shit too (pic related). I mean, I even have a furry hot pink leopard skirt with a bustle in the back from meta.
That said, i do miss how subtle the details were such as the focus on the actual construction of the garment withruffles, pintucks and lace. Even things like flocked and other textured fabric was favored over printed fabric it made lolita both more luxurious and wearable at the same time. You could wear a beautiful ott dress without adding 10 pounds of lace and chiffon, an underskirt down to your ankles, and a boat on the top of your biggest fluffiest wig.

I know it's a bit anal, but what are the rules in terms of lace-topped OTKs for old school? Is avoiding raschel lace the only thing I need to worry about to fit the aesthetic properly or is there more?

>> No.9532721

>>9532709
There were lace-topped OTKs with raschel lace back then too (it's more personal preference about whether you think it's ugly or matches your coord), but you really need to avoid embroidered tulle lace, since that's pretty much exclusively a modern type. Socks showed up at all sorts of different lengths from rare ankle-length to crew-length to calf-high to knee-high to OTK to a rare thigh-high. Go and look through some old photos and pay close attention to what they're wearing.

Do any gulls have the measurements on this JSK? I'm worried that the bust may be too small, but it has full back shirring, so I think it should be okay.
Old school dresses are really tricky though because I've had one fully shirred old school OP that didn't fit my bust, then I've had an old school jsk with one tiny shirring panel that fit me too big.
I've looked everywhere, but I can't find anything at all. Even on BABY's old release entries, they don't have the measurements listed for this dress... I'm going to kms, I need this color in my wardrobe.

I'm looking at a confusing measurements on a sax dress too - AP are usually more generously-sized and this dress doesn't look tiny, but Wunderwelt say it's only a 39cm bust measured flat, so maybe an 80cm bust at a push. No shirring either.

Anons, I've finally gotten the chance to wear this piece and I'm so sad. It fits alright but for some reason the fabric is incredibly tight around my forearms and restricts blood flow and movement. I can't even text without struggling. It's painful to wear because of this, is there anything I can do? Do I just have fat forearms but small...everything else? I don't want to modify the dress and would most likely put it up on LM or BST thread if there's no hope. I really did not expect the forearms to be a problem area.

If it happens when you lift your arms up, it sounds like >>9533677 might be right that your arms are too long (since lifting your arms would cause the sleeves to slide further backwards to the bigger part of your arm) and the tight part is not hitting at the tight part of your wrist like it should. You can't change your arm length, but since the sleeves are detachable anyway you might be able to unobtrusively mod them and add a few cm in length hidden under the lace where the sleeve detaches. Or you could just wear them with the sleeves detached, or a pair of sleeves from a different dress that aren't too tight.

>>9533670
They work fine with OTKs too IMO. Tights can work but sometimes make it look a bit ouji. I can see ankle socks working with it but it'd have to be an otherwise very summery coord with e.g. eyelet lace on the bloomers.

>>9533675

Whether they'll stay up naturally depends partly on whether the length is right to wrap around your leg enough times to reach a bit where it won't slip down while your muscles flex. You search generic keywords like "angelic pretty floral OP" "angelic pretty rose op" to see if that comes up. You can also use keywords attached to design features you think it might have, such as "long sleeves" or "detachable sleeves", but not all entries are tagged properly so it doesn't always work. If that fails, you use advanced search to look through all AP OPs by year and color, using the date you think the scan is from as a guide.

Had this JSK bookmarked a while but can't afford it, so dumping it here since I know these threads are full of green velvet fiends. The release year is more recent but this dress is totally oldschool-appropriate - Velveteen Candy Ribbon JSK for ¥9504.

I want to stick only with white and a bit of red because old school has mostly color block or accent coordinating. I would try a old school coord with this skirt later. Probably also black instead of white would work with polkadot red or it's too modern?

I think because the lace and polka dots are white and polka dots are extremely retro and sweet you're better off sticking with white, or maybe a bit of pink like in >>9542991 (older) or >>9543065 (more modern). Especially by 2005-2006 you saw AP mixing red and pink.

So I just figured out my main style might be a mix between gothic and old school and I want to start buying some older pieces. My question is, do any of the older pieces from 2008 and below (esp. 2004-2007) have shirring? How can I search for old dresses on yahoo auctions or other sites?
Plus, has anyone bought RHS from ebay? I'm kind of iffy about them, but they do have my size.

>> No.9546777

>>9546682
>Yes, have you tried typing "shirring" into lolibrary and even clicking search, they show the year for everything in the thumbnails. Honestly if you want bigger pieces look mostly for Meta, a lot of their stuff is more forgiving, I have a dress from 2002 with no shirring but like an 88cm waist and it's gorgeous. Meta also did and still does a lot of shirring, plenty of their old pieces have shirring. If you're on the slightly bigger side also stay cautious of IW, even with shirring I find a lot of their older pieces run a bit small especially in the bust.
>You search the brand name, look at the dresses, and if you see one you want you either recognize it already or go look it up to see how old it is. There is no magic 'old dress' search button or term, half the time sellers don't know or don't remember how old stuff is or don't bother to write it in the description. Half the time the dresses don't have names aside from "Baby the Stars Velvet Black Lolita Gothic One Piece" or whatever. I learned to recognize dresses from going through tons of lolibrary listings and old pictures as a side hobby. That's the only way really, looking stuff up. You have to learn to recognize hallmarks that might make a dress "older" so you can look at something and go "oh, this looks old" and then you go try and find it on Lolibrary or whatever. Sometimes you can also date stuff by tag pictures, it doesn't work for Baby, but Meta has been through a few logos, and AP has been through like six or seven of them.
>What shop are you looking at? Just "rhs from ebay" tells us nothing, but if you have the listing or shop you're looking at maybe someone here can help. I'd buy from Bodyline instead honestly, their shipping isn't even that bad (probably because i'm euro) and at most you end up paying like what 23.99 + 16 shipping so about 40 bucks for a pair of shoes, which isn't really that bad for shoes honestly.

I own a bunch of Bodyline and brand headdresses and BL headdresses are not horrible. It gets boring and repetitive seeing them in coords because they only have two designs (which, yeah, you can spot a mile off), but quality and lace and everything used on them is completely fine (except the ribbon lacing, which is shinier but also easy to replace).

I use Vanish and it works really nicely, got some good stains out of an AP dress I got, whitened the lace on some Meta I have too. I also used it to take a thrifted blouse from dingy yellow to bright white. I use Vanish Gold, I tried to find the differences between the Vanish powders but I honestly couldn't when I was in the store. I think as long as you're careful about the concentration and dilution of it, it's fine. It's way more gentle than my washing machine would be, honestly. If you're not sure though, I search up vintage blogs to get tips. If it's good enough for lace from the 40s, it's good enough for my burando.

I have washed black pieces with it and haven't experienced any fading, the one I got says it was ok for colors so I trusted it? The water did come out slightly tinged greyish tho, so I'm trying to be careful, but it did not appear to affect the color. I try to only use it once or so to lighten the whites and lift the stains, and then for regular cleansing I use mild laundry detergent. I didn't experience the slightly tinged water affecting the color of the lace either. If you are unsure I'd spot test it first somewhere that it's hard to see to make sure the dye doesn't bleed/lift. You can also make a paste and try to only put it on the white parts as best you can, but when you do that you have to be careful it doesn't sit very long.

But like I had a Maxicimam OP I got 2nd hand with a detachable collar that had a yellowish tinge to the back of it where it would sit on the neck, and now there is barely a trace of it.

I used this one: http://www.vanish.co.uk/products/powders/vanish-gold-oxi-action-powder/

Side note, I'm an inch shorter than you and I always get shocked when I try on an old piece and it's super short. It's fun though, I think the shortness is kinda endearing.

I have the CC ones, they're much nicer quality than they look in the pics and I prefer them to the ones I've owned from Bodyline and MeLikesTea. They're not oldschool long but they're long enough for a crotch-length dress. They're super comfy and I love them, I was disappointed that the black sold out (I bought the white to test the quality but by the time it arrived and I tried it on the black had sold out). I have some AatP bloomers in the mail as well.

I'd otherwise consider brand, I've seen people use Little Dipper ones but the eyelet lace on theirs doesn't match most oldschool, which has torchon.

>>9552417
I don't like mixing weights of lace at all, I'm pretty anal about matching unless it's not noticeable (like some cotton raschel isn't noticeable with torchon). I don't like torchon and cheap eyelet together but some of the custom eyelet Baby has like the heart lace blouses looks good with torchon.

I was actually bothered the other day because I have a Baby blouse and headdress with perfectly matching rose-embroidered cutwork lace but I don't think they ever released socks like that and AFAIK it's a custom lace so I wouldn't be able to handmake them. That's taking the matching obsession too far though.

Does anyone have any favourite old EGL photoshoots? I came across this 2006 one purely by chance yesterday and I'd love to see more. It's heavily inspired by Moitie but apparently all handmade. I see one particular image from this set come up on /cgl/ occasionally but never any of the others.

Okay, here's a weird one:
http://www.maidenclothing.net/script/detail.php?id=154071661001

Maidenclothing are selling a BtSSB Babydoll JSK, but it looks deformed. It's only 67cm long. My guess is that it's been altered way shorter, but Maidenclothing don't mention that as damage:

>It is a simple and cute shirring babydoll. Shoulder strap part, back part contains rubber. Also with lining skirt, it is a nice fabric. It is a jumper skirt that goes well with any coord.
There is fading, wearing feeling.
>(* 2 = goods with scratches and dirt.)

However, they did list the price as only 1,296, indicating they know it's not worth much.

What do you reckon, /cgl/? Ancient super-short variant on the babydoll JSK (maybe designed as roomwear), or altered brand that Maidenclothing didn't spot?

I saw that. After checking my Karami it looks like it might have had the bottom tier removed completely. Quite sad because if the lack of lace on the remaining tier is any indication it's an old release. I thought about getting it but it's so short I'd have no use for it, except as parts.

I have a similar dress that I estimate is from the early 2000s, roughly 2003. The problem with old MmM is that it's not well documented since the GLB didn't feature everything and I believe they changed websites a couple times. Digging up sources on old MmM is a pain if it wasn't featured in a GLB. If there was a picture of the care tag I could date it better, but without that I don't have much.

Funny, I've actually just been watching a load of 2003 videos for their first tour today. In some of the outside crowd shots there are a lot of gothic lolitas in MmM I don't recognise (and some handmade, other brands, etc as well as pieces I do recognise). I didn't spot that dress but it was really interesting to look through. Like holy shit, there were so many lolitas/bandgirls by that point. It had really become a trend, and a very social scene, I guess, for girls going to lives in Tokyo:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWXWAVrSaoQ

I kind of appreciate what Mana said in that recent interview more now - the one where he said he didn't really feel sad about the decline in popularity of gothic lolita, because it was just the bandwagon-jumpers leaving and those who really loved the style would always stay. You see so few people in the early street snaps that it's easy to forget that lolita became huge soon after. Like, it went from G&LB 1 where they're obviously reaching to find enough people to street snap and putting everything they can find in there and still only having a couple of pages of snaps, to having way, way more lolitas than could ever fit in the G&LB.

FYI, if you find a tag that says size 9, then it's 2002 or earlier. I don't know exactly when they switched to using "Moitie" sizing of 1, 2, and the occasional 3, but the really old stuff is labeled as M or 9. I recently got a blouse from them that was labeled as L and it's perfect; the fit is incredible and you can tell it's ancient. I'm guessing it was one of their first men's pieces.

>> No.9558153

>>9558144
Double-posting because another thought just hit me.

There's so little Moitie on the second-hand market compared to other brands, I always assumed there just wasn't that much in circulation. Like, y!ja always has less than 100 Moitie pieces up, LM and the western market in general are around 100 as well, places like Wunderwelt have less a couple of dozen, smaller sellers might just have a handful, so it seems like there's barely any Moitie out there compared to the volumes of stuff for brands like AP or even IW. Yet when you look at live videos and see hundreds of girls all wearing different dresses, even if you assume at least half of them aren't actually in Moitie, there were obviously a lot of dresses around back then even though MmM had only existed for a couple of years. What happened to all those old pieces? Did they just get fucked up from live shows and end up thrown in the trash? Are they being kept by the owners as sentimental items? These really old pieces especially rarely come up.

Yep! You can also use the serial number at the top and cross-check against lolibrary. Every Moitie piece comes with a unique serial number starting with EGL or EGA. It's not the easiest way to find something but honestly it's good to help narrow down the year of an unknown piece.

>>9558153
Moitie has extremely low production even now, I bet it was even lower back in the early 2000s. Between that and the very true stereotype of Moitie girls being hoarders I can see how very few of each old piece make it onto the market. However a lot of what's on the market actually is old, Moitie just has stayed very true to their aesthetic over the years (except for their period flirting with photoshop, we don't talk about that) so it's hard to tell on sight alone.

I've seen "older" women wearing full moitie before in Shinjuku, maybe the teens who were rocking Moitie back in the day are still working it. And they might be selling privately to friends who are Mana fans.

I own Moitie dating from 1999 to 2014 and I can cheerfully say that I've joined the ranks of hoarders. If I sell any of my dresses there's a good chance I'll never find them again. I have a couple accessories/blouses I love so much I want to buy another copy but finding specific pieces is so hard, and my favorite blouse is only from 2007.

Basically Moitie is one of the biggest pains in the butt to get your hands on but my goth-y self loves every minute.

I know that a lot of what's on the market right now is old, but I still saw a lot of pieces in old vids that I'd never seen before. It seems hardest to get stuff from pre-2002, there's usually a lot of 2002 stuff floating around. You might be onto something with the idea of private sales to friends though, it seems more likely than that that 90% of old Moitie fans are still wearing it.

I've seen quite a few similar OTT lacy skirts kicking about that I didn't buy because I didn't think they'd match any of my blouses - I now realise I should probably have coorded them with a cape. Like this Baby one, it's sold out now but is similar:

sorry for my ignorance, i just recently got into old school. is there a japanese term for it? tired of seeing endless ott prints when im searching japanese websites for brand. also, does anyone know where to get the pink dress momoko wears at the beginning of kamikaze girls? thanks for the help gulls

>> No.9558961

>>9558850
There isn't a widely-used Japanese term for it, there's no easy/cheat way to search for it on auctions. You need to be familiar enough with old releases on lolibrary and old snaps and scans to be able to recognise the look of old pieces on sight. If you really don't know how to identify pieces (or don't want to spend hours looking through thousands of listings to find the small fraction of oldschool ones), you can look in the Old School Lolita Community Worldwide group on Facebook, where they have a pinned post where people link oldschool finds. Obviously some of them have sold out but a lot of the links will work.

Which pink dress? Do you mean the most iconic one that's on all the posters? That's BtSSB's Hawase Doll / Rose Pattern Lace Doll OP with the sleeves detached. It's pretty expensive in that colourway even second-hand because it's famous from the film.

It's inspiring to see so may different lace patterns used together! I acquired a variety of vintage wide-patterned (mostly) torchon laces but I was afraid they weren't useable for lolita. There isn't enough of a lot of them for a full dress alone but combined like the cape, they might!

>> No.9559753

>>9559684
Most of those laces would look cute in old school imo. There's a couple that look more like tulle lace so those might not work so well though. Something else to consider is using them on a blouse. Lace running up the front or down the sleeves is a really cute look if you have a yard or so.
