what kind of guides are you looking for? sewing guides? working with pleather can be applied to generally all sewing guides. the only thing thats different is the type of equipment you use (i.e. needles)

why do you say that? you can achieve a glossy look with EVA foam. hell, you can get a glossy look with just about every material, it just depends on how you finish the piece. (glossy top coat is a thing you know)
it might be easier to achieve a glossy look easier when using different materials but dont think that you HAVE to use a specific material to make something look like a certain type of material.
ive seen cosplayers use craft foam and make it look like real leather.

but I guess to answer your question, you can sculpt the helmet out of clay, make a mold and cast it in resin.
or cardstock+fiberglass+bondo is also another popular method for helmet making.
or you can make it out of sintra which is basically just plastic, like what PVC pipes are made of but just in sheet form.

So I'm going to AX in July and I'm putting together a bloodborne cosplay for it. I already have the base clothes for it and the hat is easy, all I need is a wide brimmed hat that I can fold into a tricorn, swords not incredibly comblex, basically a silver basted sword. My hardest challenge so far is footwear, I'm trying to find a pair of knee/thigh high boots in my size, checked a few thrift stores in my area and so far ground nothing (did randomly find a flcl plush though, that was nice), my problems the size, I'm a guy and a size 13 so finding boots like the is a bit tricky, I was wondering if cgl had any tips for finding boots to use? Another thing is I have a leather coat but it needs some light modifications (moving some buttons around, adding an extra buttonhole, and shortening the sleeves), I don't feel even remotely competent in my sewing ability for leather so I'm considering taking it to a tailor the have the alterations done, do you guys have any experience with this? Is it frowned upon?

Yes, some sewing guides would be nice. I need to know what to look for when making the jacket and pants. Like what measurements I should use to make it more form fitting and how I would make it more mobile and easy to move in. Also tutorials for boots.

My mother is good at sewing, but I can only visit her on the weekends as my family lives in another state. She also only really sewes stuff if she's motivated and likes what she's sewing. I may be able to persuade her.

I didn't know that about EVA, I just went with what I saw in most pics and vids.

On a side note, would it look better or worse if I bought a motorcycle helmet and modified that instead of starting from scratch?

pretty much this.
I use a generic mannequin head for some stuff and its about an inch or so smaller than my head so i just adjust accordingly.
You can always make your own head though if you want something exactly your head size.
all it really takes is some duct tape and something to fill the head with like the stuff you put in pillows.
theres tutorials online for stuff like this.

For the helmet, look up Evil Ted Smith. he has a free helmet pattern you can use as a base, and a youtube video showing exactly how to build it. And he also has videos on priming and painting, and it will get the exact look you want, and a be a lot cheaper and easier than modifying an existing helmet.

personally I think they look pretty bad. mainly because of the bulkiness of motorcycle helmets.

batman helmets are more form fitting to your face so youre gonna have to modify the shit out of that motorcycle helmet to actually make it look good so it just gets to the point where youre just better off making the helmet from scratch.

Anyway, to answer your question, why not just make a costume for a character you like that's:
1. Visually impressive but not overly difficult to make
2. Not cosplayed very often, if at all

Trust me when I say there are a ton of cool-looking characters that can be done with rudimentary EVA foam fabrication knowledge. I think you'd have a lot more fun this way than just doing some meme cosplay, and you'd still get attention too.

EVA definitely has some significant startup cost. Gotta have a decent utility knife+blades, heat gun, contact cement, cutting mat, sand paper, the foam itself, possibly a dremel. It's pretty cheap to work with once you have everything though, especially if you know where to get more EVA at a low price.

I used a silver paint sharpie to fix some lines and afterwards realized it didn't completely match. I ended up trying to play it off like it was discoloration on some parts of the armor, but I have a feeling it might just look like a bad paint job at this point. Any tips? I'm having trouble strapping my armor.
In the source material, it has a chest plate that is held up by only 1 strap going across the back just under the pecs. This doesn't seem to give it any actual grip, and it keeps wiggling and slipping down. Does it matter if I break from the source material and add extra straps so that it actually stays on me? how do people normally do this?
I can't put something like velcro on the clothes underneath because I may want to wear them without the chest piece.

My best guess at this point would be to instead do a cross on the back over my shoulders. That would keep it from falling down, but it wouldn't match the source.

So a friend of mine gave me a foot of thibra to mess around with on one of my props. This is my first time using any sort of thermalplastic type sheets.
Its kinda hard to work with though since its stretches pretty easily and i found myself accidentally stretching it a little too much just to get it to wrap around corners. Though, one thing that kinda annoys me is how easily it can pick up imperfections in the foam. I can see how this might be helpful if you have tiny details that you need to bring out though.

Now my question is does worbla act like this too? is the stuff thick enough so that it hides small imperfections like seams?
Im thinking of using some type of thermalplastic for my next armor build.

If you're using velcro on knits, reverse that. Hooks on the foam, fuzzy on the suit. Think about it - you'll fold the suit up in storage, or parts of it will fold over itself when you're putting it on, or so on - and then the hooks are snagging on the spandex because they're inevitably rubbing up on the fabric. I've used velcro to attach things to spandex before, and *always always always* fuzzy on the spandex, hooks on whatever separate object is getting put on.

I've never used Fabri-tac before so can't attest to that, but it seems like if you lay the glue down so you'll avoid punching through it with your needle, you'll be fine! I've been alright simply holding the velcro in place with a few pins and zig-zagging around the edges.

And - just realized I got kinda intense about hooks and spandex up there; I'd had some /bad times/ of my own with hooks snagging on spandex before figuring it out. Hope it goes better for you!

I worked with both worbla and thibra. If you're looking for an ultra smooth finish I recommend thibra, and it's also easy to mould small details like clay, but worbla is much sturdier and easier to work with, and doesn't pick up imperfections as easily. Worbla also sticks better to foam and other things, and thibra picks up lots of air bubbles.
If you still want to use your bit of thibra, make sure you don't heat it too much and heat it in portions, also don't try to mould it too much, one or two times forming it is ideal. The more you try to form it the worse it gets with fingerprints and stretching.
Worbla needs a ton more refining and primer to make it smooth.

Thibra is best used for sculpting details. It can be used to wrap edges, but it is much softer than Finest Art, Black Art and Mesh Art, so it doesn't work as well in that regard.

Quick breakdown of Worbla stuff for you:

Finest Art (brown stuff): the standard and it is the cheaper than Black and Mesh. It has the same activation point as Black and Mesh, but does require a little more post work to get a nice finish. Very user friendly.
Black Art: Very similar to Finest, but can tear easier when stretched too far. Has a smoother finish, so less post work needed.
Mesh Art: Really strong. Most durable of all Worbla products. Doesn't curve as well, and tends to have sharper corners, and needs a lot more finishing, but this will never break or dent.
FlameRed: Mostly the same as Black, but has a slight flame resistance to it. Only really needed for stage work to meet industry standards if there is a chance it will be near an open flame. Not for general cosplay purposes.

Then there are the clear ones, TranspArt, Crystal Art, and Deco Art, but those are more for decorative purposes.

The number one thing you really need to do before using any makeup is moisturize. Almost all makeup you put on will be absorbed right into your skin and look dry and cakey if you don't moisturize properly.
If all you really want is to not look sweaty and red in photos, then the absolute minimum would be moisturizer, a light foundation, and maybe some bronzer. The thing to remember though, is that putting foundation all over your face will make your face look rather flat.

If you really want some good tips, check out Wayne Goss's youtube channel. I wouldn't recommend his products exactly, as they are rather pricey, but he still gives good, beginner friendly advice, and it applies to both males and females. A good start would be https://youtu.be/F3lQnPFTwic

I'm going to sound really stupid for a second, but I followed someone's template based off one of the evil Ted vids someone linked here. It's slightly smaller than I need it to be. it depends what youre priming the EVA foam with. if youre using something like plastidip, it will allow paint to bend without much damage. you will get wrinkles at most but practically no paint chipping.

if its wood glue, just a warning, that stuff cracks pretty easily.
that other anon recommended wood glue for that other anon because they were using pink insulation foam which is stiff and wont bend.
EVA foam is super flexible so using wood glue on it is kinda dangerous. especially if you have areas that might end up bending a lot.

Yeah glue, I read up on a few sites when I saw it as well. Some people use straight glue and others nix it with water for better application. 3 layers and it makes for a good foundation for plasti dip while closing up holes. It also makes it more sturdy.

Alright /cgl/, google isn't helping me for once. Shitty diagram for visuals since it's hard holding all the parts up for pictures.
I am working with 0,5 cm/0.2 inch EVA foam for a costume (red solid). I need to attach PVC pipe to it so the pipe stands up vertically (blue), the PVC enters into the EVA at the bottom of the costume. I can add two points of anchoring (yellow). Now, since the foam is fairly thin and the pipe fairly heavy, is there any way of adding some support (purple question marks for where I think it would need support the most) without the foam buckling like the red dashed line?
Or am I going to have to suck it up and remake the pipe out of lighter material?

Here's 3 layers of wood glue.

It's still very flexible and I've tried putting it on any taking it off multiple times to test it before plasti dipping it.

I was contemplating another layer of glue, but I'm not sure what it would add to it. All of my holes are filled now and each layer I add doesn't seem to make it any more stiff. It may make it worse by adding another layer.

looks like you used spray paint. Did you keep it far enough back from what you were painting? If you hold the can too close it has a bad habit of spraying too much and dripping. Try spraying from the distance it says on the can, and using multiple lighter coats instead of one coat to cover the whole thing

Yup! I did for a very simple design and it turned out okay. I was doing Terra from Teen Titans, and even with a very simple design, I had problems with the paint spreading to parts I didn't want it to be. I think if I had been extremely careful with ironing down the freezer paper I might have been able to prevent it, but I just painted over the mistakes with black paint (same color as my shirt).

Guys, I've got a problem. Due to me using a cheap glue it's not sanding. The paint has a sort of rubberlike finish. It's not really coning off, at best its peeling. I've used both a fine and coarse grit. The coarse one managed to rip off a gloop that went down to the bottom layer of glue, but it ripped the sandblock (not using that again as it may do even more damage to the foam) and then the fine one isn't havimy much of an affect. At best it's made the paint Matte.

So one thing led to another, remember that gloop that came off along with a lot of the glue layers? Well I kinda managed to peel off the layer of plasti dip and paint like it was plastic wrap on a present.

The good news is that I may be able to fix the wood glue? Bad news is that I just lost some hours of my life as some of the glue came off. Specifically on the top right ear.

At this point just take the loss as a learning experience. Plastidip isn't spraypaint and spraypaint isn't brushable paint and they all need some time to learn how to use them.
I won't say "oh you were impatient with your paint coats so it looked bad" since I don't know exactly how you plastidipped/painted, but yeah: if your base isn't already looking essentially like an unpainted perfect (in your eyes) version then you need to refine it more.
From this picture I noticed your glue base is very bumpy so yes, refine that until it's not bumpy, then on to plastidip.

I would definitely use foam, but the patterns for these pieces are exceptionally hard to make, so goodluck. I guess you can carve the shapes out of styrofoam and then make the patterns on it, primarily for the shoulders.

Is there anywhere I can find some sort of photo reference of what different-sized clothes look like on the same body type? Something like a size S/M girl shown wearing XS, S, M, L and XL sweatshirt/T-shirt so I can see how they hang. It seems like such an obvious idea to help with online shopping for items with standard cuts like T-shirts, but I Googled it and nothing came up except some stuff showing the same dress on different-sized women (which is the opposite of what I was looking for).

For lolita I always used to just use my measurements, but I'm buying a lot more baggy/oversized stuff for other jfash now and it's hard since the line between "cutely oversized" and "frumpy and ill-fitting" is a really fine one. Other jfash are much harder to sell second-hand so mistakes can be costly. I was thinking of going into a shop with a tape measure and photographing myself in a bunch of different sizes and making a note of what size they are flat, but I don't want to bother if it's been done before.

So I just found out what a big problem was. The wood glue I was using was bad. Originally I was using Gorrila Wood Glue, something was telling me not to get it. However, today I went back and got Elmer's Wood Glue Max and already it's made a huge difference.

I used an exacto knife to shave off the larger pieces of gloop. Then sanded it vigorously to make as smooth and even surface as possible. Then I applied about 5 layers on the ear that I was talking about earlier. I also applied 2 thin layers or so of the Elmer's Glue to further even out the glue.

Long story short it has a better finish on it by default and it's not sticking together. It dries MUCH faster leaving no time for it to get all drippy. So I'm going to sand it again after this layer dries to get it ready for the Plexi-dip.

Errr, trust me what you're seeing is from the glue layer it's just more visible on this layer due to the gloss. I sprayed light layers from 12" (it recommends 10-16") away back and forth. I had to put the extra layers because the first 3 really didn't cover the plexi-dip. I had to use the last to layers to focus on the thinner areas as there were some parts with visibly less paint than others.

It's not that thick, all the layers were extremely thin and I waited between coats. I was hoping layer 5 would cover some of the defects and it did. If I didn't screw the glue it would not look like this.

I've seen CDC replicas in person and you are not going to get the same colour you see online. It's going to be faded, muted, and dull. The fabric is going to be stiff and wrinkle. Look at the lace, it's so wonky.
The real deal is actually quite nice in person, with gold stencilling on the print, and a layer of lining with tulle to shape the skirt. The night-sky navy of the AP piece really makes it pop; it's such a rich and beautiful colour.

Replicas are regrets, the real deal is worth every penny.

I'm looking for green pigment to tint my transparent resin casts with.

I tried food dye (thought it wouldn't work since it's water based) and acrylic paint.
The food dye pretty much had no effect (i only used two drops because the mix was quite tinted, but the result was nearly clear). And the acrylic paint became too opaque to even let led light shine through.

Ideally you want to finish a piece with a sandable material so you can get an even surface, then spray paint it, then spray on clear acryllic if you want gloss. Although your piece is far from terrible for a first attempt, mistakes were made.

Thanks, I ended up looking up liquid latex too and came across Smiffy's. Does anyone have experience with Smiffy's liquid latex? I'm in the UK for buying btw.

I'm weighing up between PAX or liquid latex at the minute. I'm leaning more towards latex because PAX is apparently a bastard to come off.

Okay, so I tested it out, and it works fairly well. Though the floral wire I have on hand is a dark green, so I'll have to go out and get some in a bright shade of blue. Using a blue sharpie on the floral wire I have just makes the wire become a purple-black color.

I personally prefer PAX because I'm slightly allergic to latex and I've found PAX to have a smoother application overall (less fussy to get a clean finish and I don't totally ruin a brush). Taking it off /does/ require at least a half-hour in the shower under hot water, but it can be a meditative experience.
>Soap up the entire surface and let hot water run over it while you do the rest of your shower routine
>Peel and ball off the PAX bit by bit

It can help to have a base moisturizer layer (I like aloe vera as a primer under PAX), and I've heard that dandruff shampoo actually helps remove it pretty well - though I haven't tried it yet.

OH yeah, just get the right thickness of foam. Then get a glossy black or semi-gloss metallic silver paint. I'd say the silver matches her color scheme better though.

not that anon but yeah, they arent connected to anything. it pretty much falls under the "dont question japanese artist" category.

honestly, I can see it working with EVA foam.
kaneko and soejima uses slightly different color schemes (i.e. kaneko has her super pale).
so you can probably just meet in the middle and make them dark grey.
I like kenekos style for the games but for cosplay sake, i like soejimas style.

Don't spray paint foam.

Save yourself some mess and contact some good metallic vinyl over foam them cut them into neat little squares. It'll be more durable and will looked better than painted foam

This is also better because you have squares near your armpits where there will be a lot of rubbing back and forth while you walk. Paint runs the risk of flaking off or rubbing onto the fabric.

though I agree with the vinyl over foam method, this wont happen if you prep your foam correctly.
even just the simple plastidip on eva foam wont flake or rub off onto fabric.

You may be fucked, if you want to make at all decent armor. You really cannot simplify armor if you don't want it looking like shit. So many of the parts are linked and reliant on one another.
With Doom specifically, you're fucked because of how reliant his design is on the gauntlets. Just look to google and see how bad the non-steel gauntlet versions are.

Gauntlets are hard.

How abhorred is the 2005 movie among comic fans?
The design is recognizable and dramatically simpler.

I was really planning to go for the classic doom, by modifying the Iron Man build in general, you know, use the arms and legs from the ironman, make a basic armor underneath the cloth which will cover it.

Also, I would really avoid the movie version, people apparently hate it like anything
