Anime Expo 2017 will take place from June 30 (Friday) through July 4 (Tuesday).

First time going to AX (and America's West coast), is it worth getting a US sim card so I can get internet access? Or is there wifi at the con? Or do people just use the hotel wifi?

I ask because my experience with big cons is that the cell and wifi networks get flooded and become unusable.

The con will not have wifi.

It's really up to you. I'm going to be using my data simply because the app they use for the schedule/map/cosplay gathering locations is more reliable than the physical program they give out to people. Some things change during the con and you'll only know that through the app or word of mouth. I mean there's always other ways to get information, but having internet handy makes things faster and easier.

It was open on day 0 the first time I went many years ago but I haven't been to AX on day 0 since then. This year the ticket booth is open even earlier on the 29th. Ironically the normal ticket booth is open more than the premier fan ticket booth is.

On a lightly related noted, does anyone know what day the AMV contest usually takes place? Is it usually on the same day or do they switch it up? I look forward to it every year but I'm scared it'll be at the same time as the AKFG concert. As someone in the know about this shit, it's most likely the impeachment rally. However, other groups want to join and make this another huge rally because it's 4th of July weekend. This is what they consider an important part of being a true patriot and save America. The following groups may also join:

Womens March (which they are planning to go around DTLA, but not in the scale as the day after inauguration)
Immigrants March (most likely be at Perishing Square again)
LGBT March (most likely would pair with the women march)

However these are groups who expressed interest, but has not fully confirmed. I'm not that high up in chain so I cannot say for certain if the decision has been made, but that's what I know so far. I highly doubt it'll affect AX, but how these protest interfere with other activities, I dunno. Anything could happen.

Getting one that is custom tailored to me in 2 months in a style that will match the other 2 with wigs is 500. They couldn't do a size 13 boot that is a match from the show so I had to custom order a pair for another 100. the main spending point is that our costumes match.

Going alone, your experience will vary depending on your goal.
I go alone alot but I still manage to have a great time. You can squeeze through crowds pretty quickly as well as go alot of places.

Only problem I find is when I need to be in two places simultaneous and I don't have a friend to wait in line for me.

Eh it's not that bad. Keep your schedule busy with Panels. If you're sociable enough there's always a goof chance you can make a friend waiting in line.

Otherwise go to the crossboard meetups (because it feels strange to call them /cgl/ meets) and go from there.

The trick is to keep occupied and entertained.

It could just be me because I'm not the most social person, but I roomed with 2 other people. One of them had been going to AX with me for over 10 years. We knew the drill. For some reason, last year we all went our separate ways. (The 3rd person was his brother and I don't know him too well. He was just there to help pay the room bill basically.) We spent time together eating dinner like once, the AMV contest, and being in the room of course. But for the most part he split once we stepped foot on LACC grounds. I don't know if I did anything to cause him to do that, or if he just did it without realizing it. He's not a mean person so it was really out of character. I figure he woke up one day and realized I was obnoxious or something. I honestly don't know, and I haven't had the courage to bring it up because I wouldn't want to guilt trip him into hanging out with me if he doesn't actually want to, because that's also something he would do. I don't need someone to hang with me 100% of the time, but it would've been nice to have someone talk to every now and then.

Like at first, it's kinda nice going alone because you can do everything at your own pace and you don't have to worry about trying to make others happy. I did like exploring when I was alone. I walked every inch of the con from midnight-1am. Just....walking, seeing the night crowd. That happened to me halfway through my trip 2 years ago.

I think as long as you keep yourself busy, you'll be ok.

You don't need actual dance skills, just try to loosen up and move, even if that's just nodding your head or tapping your foot or something. It sounds lame but lame movement is less conspicuous than being an awkward statue.

Also, try to bring only what you need. 1, it's less stuff to worry about losing and 2, carrying a bag of stuff obstructs you from moving as freely.

Shit, I should've done this. I feel kinda bad now. I mean I did buy an extra one for a friend but there's a 3rd friend who wants to go but didn't get tickets because he doesn't know if he has the days off yet or not. I could've gotten the 3rd and gotten that insurance thing. I can say that being the only one takes the edge off because you won't have to walk around and see possible better versions of yourself. There really isn't any regret or paranoia until maybe after the con when/if you start seeing better cosplays. There's nothing worse than working really hard on a cosplay only to arrive at a con and see like 5 better versions of it.

Also, question: Is cosplaying worth it at AX? I hear at larger cons or rather massive cons like this one, cosplay just makes it harder to walk around, especially if you're popular, but even if you're not cosplay can get uncomfortable.

If you're cosplaying armored stuff it's more challenging to walk around trying not to bump into people you can't see. Plus if it has a mask on top of that it will get hot and sweaty. I could only last about 4 hours in my armor before I had to go back and change.

It's a little hard to say, to be honest, without knowing what you & your friend want to go to AX for. In my personal opinion, if you're there to do those most minimal things possible (i.e. people watch, buy stuff from the AA, play at the arcade/tabletop gaming, one day concert), I'd say that a day pass would be fine. If you're planning to go to a lot of panels (if it's super popular, expect lines) & just go absolutely ham for the experience, then a four day pass might be your thing.

As you've noticed the bag checks that AX does have are cursory at best and you can easily sneak things through. They are more of a hassle/annoyance to normal attendees than actually effective. Anyone who has been in the con for even a few minutes can tell you multiple ways to get things through, nevermind just hiding it on your person and walking it in past the bag check. That assumes you're trying to get whatever you have in undetected and not just assault one of the checkpoints, or hell, going through something that doesn't have a checkpoint like breaking through a window. A more thorough check leads to a large bottleneck which leads to a nice inviting target that doesn't even require you to get past security. Metal detectors are a little more effective without actually doing body checks like the airport but I've gotten things past them too. Nevermind how penetration tests put the TSA at a 5% success rate (95% failure to detect the test weapons) so they're not a shining beacon of success

SDCC has no bag check, no metal detectors, no pat downs. What they do have is a boatload of undercover officers all over the place and a few uniformed ones to keep people honest (even a dubiously visible marksman or two). I'd much have that then security theater that I know I can get through (and have).

For anime world matsuri there are two concerts. the first is on 6/30 and is idol stuff like idolm@ster and love live. the second is on 7/1 and has more general jmusic. Asian Kung Fu Generation goes on sale on Tuesday and is probably going to go fast so I'd buy a ticket and then decide whether or not I'd want to go.

i was just gonna ask this myself. Im sure the majority of the people here live in cali. i live in orange county, personally.

I might make an effort and meet some gulls this year. i usually never go to any of the meet ups since i carpool with a bunch of friends and we all pretty much stay together during the con. but since we got a hotel this year, ill have a better chance of breaking apart from them.

I'm the same way unfortunately and it seems to be a bit more difficult since this year we're all doing group cosplays
but since the meetups are usually late around 7-9pm I think I can (hopefully) break away from them after being together for so long.

Has anybody said or decided when/where the meets going to take place or is it to early to say?
