So I am wanting to make my first ita-bag. I have a few starting keychains and a basebag to use.. But I want to make it a 2 character bag. Anyone have some recommendations on how to make this look nice? Like the background or other kind of decoration etc?

The series is Idolm@ster Cinderella girls. Uzuki (Pink) is a cute character and Rika (Yellow) a Passion character and those are their colours.

I was thinking of giving uzuki a yellow background and rika a pink background...
should I just make 2 seperate bags otherwise?

>> No.9459769

Does anyone have that tutorial saved that shows you how to make acrylic strap protectors with clear vinyl and a hair straightener?

>> No.9459803

Back when I browsed plamo threads regularly, the OP image would always have a big, red "READ THE GUIDE" on them somewhere. Maybe we should start doing something like that.

The faq lists like 3 sites for custom buttons dude.

Two character bags are fine and somewhat common. Just be warned some people might think it's a pairing bag at first.

I don't have the pic itself, but the gist of it is
1. Remove strap bit from the strap. Put it and any decorations you want inbetween 2 sheets of vinyl. Make sure the vinyl jas empty space around the edges, since that's where you'll seal it.
2. Iron around the edges of the vinyl to fuse it. You can do this with a regular iron as well as a straightener, just hit both sides if you're using an iron.
3. Trim off excess on the edges, attach fasteners, and you're done!

This one? Honestly I don't mind this one very much, plus the poster had some awareness and didn't call it an itabag. Plus it's a lot more cohesive then a lot of pin bags I've seen, due to it being only one kind of merch and having a somewhat consistent aesthetic.

I've seen a good handful of DIY base bags, plus I'm planning on doing one myself here soon. I also found it funny you posted that bag because I was just looking at it. It nice but dear lord that price tag was ridiculous.

>> No.9461821

Yeah. Still not cohesive at all, which is why I'd never call it an itabag, even if it's part of a fandom. I love my pins, but I never really followed a theme like some collectors do. But fuck, it's an idea that's nice, but why do you have to call it an itabag if you're missing the point of waifu/husbando level devotion?

I would be interested in seeing some of the hardcore collectors who buy all the stitch (for example) merchandise or whatever start making bags. Those I -might- consider itabags if actual thought goes into placing and such. Lanyards are so clunky, too. And the new jacket trend hurts if you buy the lockable backs and lean on them.

>> No.9461826

This makes me so fucking angry. It matters because this is an itabag group and I come to see itabags, not pin bags!!!

>> No.9461830

I have a collection of Oswald stuff (tsumtsums, plushes, pins, etc.) I've been thinking of using for a bag, but I'd probably off myself if any of them got lost.

I've seen a Duffy itabag from Japan posted in these threads that looked pretty cute.

>> No.9461832

After this scuffle is over I'm thinking about leaving the group personally if this is the attitude these people are going to have. If you're not going to respect the criteria of your "hobby" (which I question to call it that for them at this point), don't call your bags something as specific as an itabag.

I joined to see itabags like you and everyone else, not... whatever the hell these crap bags are.

>> No.9461836

This is a nice start anon. I'd focus on expanding your merch for the non-daft punk and 21p bands next. (can't really read some of the buttons cause of the vinyl glare)

I'd like to thank whoever orange was for backing me up if they're here.
The lolita example is fucking shit because all of the substyles still share core elements, I'm not even into the fashion and I know that!

That's what windowed base bags and vinyl covers are for, anon! However if you're still worried about losing merch even with these I don't blame you. There's no shame in wanting to keep a collection safe.

I'm feeling the same way, but I'm probably gonna stick around because leaving would look like I turned tail and ran, and I don't want that.

>> No.9461839

Mod here, I totally agree with everyone here on this. I'm trying to think of ways we can try and enforce stricter posting regulations on what is and isn't an ita bag.

>> No.9461850

Simple, do what other groups do. Warn people to read the FAQ of what an itabag is. If they post something that's not an itabag, it gets deleted. Period.

If someone just tosses random buttons/pins under some clear vinyl then it gets deleted.
If someone has two keychains on their backpack, it gets deleted.

>> No.9461853

that's what I'd personally love to do but I have to talk to the other mods first about it.

>> No.9461856

Maybe you could put some image comparisons and explain why each itabag is good and bad?
I don't think you can make stricter posting regulations because too many feefees will get hurt. But if you can introduce a standard that people should try to achieve, maybe it'll catch on kind of like how ita coordinates are frowned upon within the lolita community.

>ita itabagger

If I'm being serious, I don't think they deserve a name. Just a little guidance and a willingness to take advice from people who may know more than them as opposed to the "who REALLY cares/it doesn't matter lol" defense. That sort of thing just sort of insults anyone who has an idea what they're doing as well as their efforts towards their bag.

We call the toilet a shitter sometimes in my family, so now I'm just going to think of bags worthy of going in the toilet.

I personally like 'shitabag'. Though I agree with this anon >>9461923, we should try and help before we talk shit.

Good luck on that fanmerch search! Also, if you don't have any luck, I think making custom buttons of album art would fall into the same category as anime screencap buttons, ie it's ok as long as it's for personal use.

None of these anons, but I think that would lead to, well, more feefees getting hurt. Plus you might get people with pinbags saying "I know this is a bad itabag but I just wanted to show it off!!"

Mostly just.. explain that the "ita" refers to dedication, not money spent or clunky shit thrown everywhere. There's no really dedication to a bunch of random shit.

I just want people to try and have a good time honestly. If they're a dick after someone tries to help them out, that's all on them. If they want to be spoonfed, there's an FAQ and past thread they can read instead.

If they throw a fit about being directed towards these things or even someone trying to guide them, then they're beyond help imo.

Maybe along with the general itabag FAQ, there could also be a FB group FAQ? And if they choose not to follow it, the post gets deleted.

Could be a bit of work, but I'd be happy to help write up some of it. As I'm sure some other gulls here would like to give some help as what's generally "expected" or "suitable" to be posted.

And on feelings getting hurt, it all depends on the person. Some people just don't take to concrit well at all.

>> No.9461972

While we're on this topic...is anyone else SO tired of people posting their bags with like 3 things on it? Like I get that it's exciting to make a bag and share it but seriously, it just becomes clutter in the group, ugh.

>> No.9461980

Anon.....did you even read any of the previous posts here.

>> No.9461992

I think it did yes, but the group is indiscriminate and accepts everyone (nothing wrong with that). Talks of itabag also exist on other sites (twit/tumg for example) and usually that's where the attitude also comes from. Like another anon mentioned before, it's just another "no gate keeping reeeeee!!" type deal which I've seen a lot on the latter website. I personally don't believe in the whole "I can do whatever I want and label it as such" like people have been doing with their random bags in the fb group. It doesn't help that others are encouraging them.

We all welcome newcomers into this hobby but my god, at least follow the rules and guides.

>> No.9461994

It's a common mindset for casuals, really. You see it in any hobby now (cosplay, lolita, art, etc.)
It's some kind of hugbox "anything goes as long as you're having fun!" mindset and it's completely aggravating to anyone who takes the hobby seriously. Most of these people are bandwagoners anyway.

Lots of itabaggers have characters with little to no merch. It just means you have to do more legwork. I personally am very slowly collecting official items as they come for a video game I really love but I also strongly intend on making my own soon.

>> No.9462152

I think I was sort of unclear here, but I meant itabagging will always live for individuals, maybe not necessarily as a "visible" hobby. People talk about itabags being a new trend, but it's only new to the west. The Japanese have been doing this for longer, as far as I'm aware since the late 90's/early 2000's. It's only because visible because we have access to more anime/manga and general knowledge of what's going on around the world.

Anyway, I still think this person is ridiculous for throwing such a fit about a few people trying to be helpful.

>> No.9462154

I don't know anything about American Gods except for the promo images, but holy shit, that character name in the logo's neon tubing font is amazing.

Why are we comparing fashion subcultures to a fandom outlet? Maybe I'm looking at itabags (or fandom) wrong, but I don't really consider them a subculture the same way lolita and gyaru are. Fanfiction has been around for almost half a century and will likely never die the way different fashions do.

I've always wondered about reporting obviously stolen art/keychain things on eBay but I'm unsure how to go about it. You'd have to review their policies. Also we've discussed in threads before, but fanmade items aren't bootleg. A bootleg is specifically to mimic already existing items.

You may want to check eBay jp but I think those have the same/similar results sometimes. Definitely check out the FAQ for other places to look for stuff if you haven't already.

Fug, I didn't even think that they keep comparing lolita to itabagging just because they're both of Japanese origin.

>> No.9462335

We had this discussion a few threads back, but literally think of how someone takes inspiration from art. You don't copy it down to a T, you put your own spin on it.

I'm unsure if the image is meant to be an example, but a lot of coffin shaped hand bags exist period. If someone makes a pattern for their itabag and someone else decides to make one also, I wouldn't call the "coffin bag" idea truly original. I also wouldn't blame someone for being a little miffed either though.

Most inspirations can be acceptable though if you add your own flair, just something to let people know it still has something very "you" in it. Like the ring thing, there's all sorts of ways to arrange the rings and in creative ways. Doing it exactly as someone else in terms of placement and embellishment is in bad taste imo.

I think an easy way to weed out bags and not hurt anyone feefees is to make it very clear that itabags are meant for a cringey and painful dedication to a character, ship or series.

Itabags *scream* devotion and a glance should make is extremely obvious what the obsession is. If someone can't tell what the devotion of the bag is within a minute, then the bag maker isn't doing it right. i.e. bags with so many fandoms on it one has to pick through it just to figure out what the bag is for.

Honestly yeah, I think the only way it wouldn't look too weird is if you wanted to match it with some kind of fanmade part 4 Kakyoin rendition (which I've seen lots of, but never as merch, and I dunno how you'd feel about having actual AU fanfic on your bag).

>> No.9462919

I'd definitely be down for a discord server! If anyone makes a server, please post. I think it'd be fun and we can post more WIPs there and actually be able to in depth discuss/help other gulls out with their bags if wanted. It'd be neat to even just have us all get together to see if we could make new additions to the FAQ too.

>> No.9462943

4taro/Kak art is a thing, you could go down that route if you want to be a bit creative but I think that throwing in just one 4taro piece is going to make the rest of it look imbalanced.

>> No.9462966

thanks anon, first time using them so i wasn't sure how it works out.

i kinda like posting in the thread and getting feedback that way. discord feels like stuff would get buried too fast?

>> No.9462971

Posting WIPs and getting feedback is part of the purpose of the thread, though.

I'd only really like a discord if the FB group starts getting even worse. For now I'm gonna wait and see what the mods do and if it works out or not. If they are successful, I think the button-baggers, bandwagoners, and "muh community!" peeps might just leave and make their own group.

>> No.9462973

I'm sure that people would continue to use the thread, just like many people use it instead of facebook (plus the fact that there are several /cgl/ discords for different subjects with their own regular threads already)

I guess it would just be a little more organized, probably different channels for different topics like WIPs, general discussion, maybe group orders etc, if anything I feel like some stuff might get buried slower in that environment as this thread is quite active with a lot of different kinds of chatter

>> No.9462998

Sorry didn't mean to suggest wips can't be posted here, it's just that I suspect it would be annoying posting about a wip multiple times. Like on the discord it would be easier to tweak stuff and repost for opinions without it getting annoying because there's no post count or anything that would clog up a thread here.

So I recently got my base bag ( pic related) and have been testing out merch layouts and stuff, but I have encountered a little problem. The inner bag is kind of too... floppy.

Since it's the "cloth bag inside a vinyl bag" type and not the window type, putting merch on a stiffer backing board would look kind of ugly I think? But it looks so messy when I hang stuff on it and it just droops. Should I suck it up and start researching how to add interfacing to bags (I have a LITTLE sewing experience but I imagine it'll still be a challenge), or has anyone else encountered this problem and come up with a simpler solution?

>> No.9463197

You can add piece of cardboard on the inside. I did that for one of mine and it worked fine. The only problem is the off chance the cardboard bends, so it honestly might be better to go with interfacing to stiffen it up.

They're all similar in the elements they have sort of, but all different. Conbags are usually bags filled with whatever was picked up at the con, whether it's AA stuff or promo items. A buttonbag consists strictly of buttons and that's typically the only theme. Pinbags again are strictly about the material the item is made from, so these tend to focus primarily on enamel pins. Itabag's theme is obvious to all of us.

Most of the crap bags focus on material the merch is made out of as opposed to like, it's actual content I find.

I'm a dum-dum who doesn't know about trendy apps, what is the advantage of discord over talking here?

>> No.9463605

discord is like instant messaging. on the discord you can just idly chat about stuff without saging a thread in an hour. we've been talking about alpaca for itabags and getting stuff autographed by seiyuu.

Is it faux pas to decorate both sides of a bag if it is for the same character?

I bought an official tote bag for my character but the bag is kinda small and flimsy.

Literally the most perfect idea for a pin bag.

>tfw TWEWY2 never

>> No.9463627

Just don't play KH: DDD if you were hoping for anything good with TWEWY, anon. Don't fall into the dark side like I did, because it wasn't fucking worth it.

I will probably actually make a bag for the pins, though. Get some large ones made for my favorites (and the player pin and red player pin, obviously) and to break it up a little.

>> No.9463628

Half the people are trying to defend their button/pin bags by saying they cost them a lot of money.

Not once has anybody bragged about having a better itabag because they spent more money that someone else. Unless they did, and I'm just missing it.

>> No.9463634

No, a lot of itabaggers do this if the bag allows.

>> No.9463635

Apparently the drama has spilled over a bit into the lolita groups and now RCU is talking about it since people tried to use lolita as an example.

>> No.9463650

All this was really minor and considering how long it's been going on for is really unnecessary. I'm glad I can't see any of this and left the group. They keep complaining about elitism and shit because they know they're wrong. They can keep the group, and I hope most from this thread found their own respective channels.

I feel bad that they're getting even more backlash now. I really hate that having standards in a hobby equates to elitism for those kind of people.

This is exactly what's happening the itabag FB group. My pinbag is an itabag gaizs! Does it really matter?!

So our salt doesn't get saged to death.

tfw no one outside your friendgroup gives a shit about the only series you love enough to make an itabag for so everything on your bag is made by either you or your friend

i hate the arrangement but i drew one more button that should be coming in (it's bigger than the rest, idk how i'll fit it) so i guess i'll rearrange it when i add that. this is hard, how do people make shit look good???

>> No.9463751

Your art is so lovely anon! I'm having the same trouble trying to arrange stuff though, I think my problem is I just need more stuff.

>> No.9463799

Is this Devilman? I fucking love you, anon. There's supposed to be a Netflix anime based on the manga coming out soon, so hopefully we get some merch.

>> No.9463826

>ywn have friends helping each other out to make an itabag for a series you mutually love
Seriously, that's really cute.

I think maybe a backing would tie your merch a little better?

>> No.9463837

Ya'll got shops or something? I love the art.

I stack my buttons on top of the clear window. Once I find an arrangement I like, take a photo, then copy it over to the bag.

You're going to be doing a lot of rearranging, raging, and rearranging again. This is a natural part of the itabag process. Remember, ita means painful!

Is this a thing the itabag group mods do often? I don't even want to open it.

Are we still posting discord links? I'm interested in joining but the timed ones in the thread are expired.
