Definitely get a mullet type wig and trim it where it is too long. I think you should use as little styling product as possible but if you find a fabric glue that dries clear it'd be optimal.
It's a matter of personal preference on how many spikes you want to add in, from labyrinth-jareth-glam or just the fringe.
I prefer more natural looks and would focus on styling the fringe.
