Not... really? I'm a cosplayer and not into lolita, but even I can recognize how forced this argument is. The artist clearly doesn't understand the difference between "fuck outsiders' opinion on our fashion" and "to be x fashion, you need to conform to the fashion rules." Defying social norms outside of your community doesn't suddenly mean you have to have an "anything goes" policy within that community.

Lolita is like making a doughnut.
You have to follow a certain recipe to make the Base, and then you can choose what topping you want. Some people can balance flavours better then others, but unless you're a genius chef who knows what they're doing you can't really change the Base while still keeping the doughnut recognisable as a doughnut and not some other kind of pastry.
So just think of it like this- there are rules, but there's a lot of freedom between the rules for personal taste, and just like with food not everyone will like your personal taste in things.
