Recent obsessions? Recent purchases?
What was it that about old school that initially caught your attention? Did it take your eyes time to adjust so to speak?
How often do you go out in old school? Do you think about the philosophy much or is it something you just enjoy wearing?

I love tartan and hope to fill my wardrobe with it.

for me the thing about oldschool is nostalgia, the way I felt when I started (2009). The past years I felt like 'modern' lolita has strayed away from the true Lolita spirit.

I still think Kamikaze Girls is the go to movie for any new lolita to watch, as IMO it really captures what the fashion is about.

Some patterned fabric used in the old school days is just fabric that was widely available. Brands showed their individuality through the way they used the fabric (later on they used screen prints, embroidery, and finally created their own fabric). AP's used this cherry fabric, Meta's used it too, but their dresses and skirts look quite different. Think about Baby's tartan JSKs. AP's used that same tartan fabric, and a classic brand has too but I can't remember which.
To me, it gives old school a sort of "for lolitas, by lolitas" vibe.

apparently, i have been collecting old school Moitie/Boz without realizing it. i need to confirm the dates they were released, but it turns out my ouji aesthetic is influenced by the old school days of visual kei influence.

has anyone else experienced similar? i have assumed these threads focused on the simpler old school lolita styles, so i have not been keeping up.

I have bought few items I didn't know were actually old but I guess it happens if your preferences and taste are in line with particular era. I have been thinking about going towards old school goth more lately how is the sizing? I'm 70cm/86cm do I have a change to get into it? Skirts are obviously not for me, I'm looking to shed few kilos but even when I was underweight my waist was 66cm and I'm not going to get there never again honestly.

Sometimes I just feel like I want to sell all my sweet stuff but I end buying even more ffs. I really want to be a gothic old school princess.

I own a decent amount of old school moitie (mostly ops), it goes to maaaaaaybe 70cm waist for the most part. That would give enough space for petticoats, breathing, and making sure you weren't stressing the seams at all. I'm roughly 66cm waist and I have quite a bit of breathing space.

Yeah, same here on the Boz pieces. I've found myself gravitating more and more towards the old schoo goth stuff, mainly Boz. Over the last year I've found myself pick up three pieces of Boz from 2008. While not super old, I do like I lot of the releases from around then. I've always had something of a visual kei edge to how I dress, which is a mix of the more mature, 'Aristocrat' end of ouji, and the jgoth pieces I often see labelled in the West as 'femme Aristocrat'. I've also accidentally ended up managing to pick up what I'm guessing is an older piece of Atelier Pierrot by accident that was being sold as Boz. It's gorgeous. I'd love to know what year it's from, and whether it's a named piece, as I've seen it possibly once in a low-res magazine can.

Thanks. The 'fantasy Medieval' goth vibe of it really is lovely, as it's so simple and not at all ott. It weighs a ton as well, thick, heavy fabric with a gorgeous drape, and it's thick cotton-feeling tape for the lacing. It's not the easiest to match blouses to, but is worth it. I can see why it was mistaken for Boz though, as it does resemble some of the older Boz stuff out there. It makes me want to find more older AtPi with this sort of style.

For me I discovered lolita in 2009 and even though it was the start of OTT my local comm still couldn't afford these newer pieces so the girls who would help me out figure myself were oldschool lolitas. Ironically they were saving up and longing to dress modern. I guess it depends on the country, some are more on top of the current trends than others. I ended up dressing modern too because of the internet and magazines and then I found myself missing that time and how deeply I admired the way these girls around me looked, being behind the trends. That's why I love oldschool now.

Oldschool is also iconic to me, when anyone thinks of lolitas, they think of the oldschool look, even when it borders on ita. I feel more lolita when I dress in oldschool, as silly as it sounds. And even the oldschool sweet look has a little bit of a creepy, aged aspect to it that is cute but a little intimidating. Maybe you can relate to these reasons.

>> No.9427351

>>9427335
Aged aspect?
But I totally get what you mean.
I think I also like old school better because of the "punk" vibe, that sort of intimidating vibe it had especially in older streetsnaps.
It was as if they were saying "I look cute but I'm not affraid to kick ass". Nowadays it's more about being a kawaii purinsessu and that more "edgy" side of older lolita is gone.

I meant that the fabric choices aren't as pop, they look more antique without going into classic territory. Like the clothing of old dolls. Lolita used to take a lot of inspiration from lifeless dolls which nowadays some lolitas hate (recently that lovely lor video, I get it, that living doll shit ruined it), but it gives it an edge imo. People are scared of dolls, so even an oldschool sweet lolita has more impact. On the other hand modern classic lolita is inspired by what living people would actually wear, so it's more tame in that sense. It's hard to explain without sounding cringy because it's very subjective.

To be fair, the clothing of antique dolls is also what living people would actually wear, they're usually clothed like Victorian or Edwardian children. >Oldschool is also iconic to me, when anyone thinks of lolitas, they think of the oldschool look
Pretty much this. I got into lolita around 2013-2014, when oldschool was unfashionably dead and wasn't enjoying the revival it has now, but I still associate oldschool with my first experiences of the fashion because a lot of the lolita pictures I saw by chance were oldschool. The local comm pages linked to guides like Hello Lace and the Lolita Handbook which featured a lot of oldschool looks as well.

I'm not sure how unpopular my opinion is, but one thing that I also really really like about old school is the freedom of choice when it comes to petticoats. Don't get me wrong, I love to look like a madafuckin' cupcake, but usually I think of my petticoat as an annoying burden. Like I live in a small apartment, I'll either take my car or public transport which are both not petticoat friendly and shopping in small shops? Ahaha not with a petticoat. I like minimum poof, because it's so much more practical in everyday life. Just like most aspects of oldschool. Oldschool was just ment to be worn on an everyday basis and I can see why there's such a lack of lifestylers nowadays.

Speaking of the oldschool feel vs new feel
In the case of these two bonnets, the top one is really old, has the second AP tag, and the bottom one is Holy Lacy doll (new) and even has a veil, which I haven't seen in old scans (if anyone has any veiled pics, please share).
Tbh I like more the bottom one. I think AP nailed better the shape, but still this bonnet is meant to be kind of old school.

In general, are there new pieces that you would consider have that old feel?
(We could of course talk about Baby and their remakes, but I mean new designs in general)

It's a bit hard to tell but they are not really similar imo? They are both soft and black but that's pretty much it? I have a soft AP bonnet and it would look like these two too because the details are not really visible because contrast is too high. I'm trying to not come accross mean I'm just genuinely curious.

That's actually a good question. I don't think something has to be actually old to fit my style but most of the time the stuff I get tends to be. However, most of the new stuff I have is bags and shoes because those things haven't actually changed that much after brands started to put them out or they are so variable that brands still offer them. Socks must be another thing.

I actually wish more brands would reproduce like Baby does. Old school is starting to boom more and more so maybe other brands will pick up as well? AP in particular has had pretty shoes, hats and bags that I would love to be able to buy. Maybe that kind of things would sell to non-old school fags too?

I think that that's one of the things I love about Boz. They've got a number of classic staple items that they release year after year, and from time to time they go back to various designs they've brought out, and then release a new take on them. It helps add to their tieless feeling appeal to me. Bringing out new things and experimenting with stuff also keeps them fresh, combined with the new takes on older releses.

Obviously MMM. Meta too releases some things that are oldschool inspired. They're the brand that tries to diversify their style to appeal to as many different lolitas as possible, including oldschool lolitas. I've noticed brands use the word "classical" to talk about oldschool, not classic lolita. So keep your eyes peeled for that word.

Other than that... Baby's Strawberry Drops maybe? if coordinated well. But the polkadot bows irk me. Nothing from other brands... AP in particular has never acknowledged anything from those very early years. Unlike other brands their golden days were in 2010, and they honestly were the brand that killed oldschool anyways = they introduced a must use of wigs, fake eyelashes, prints... I'd be shocked if they ever tried to target oldschoolers, though they're in a very weird phase right now so who knows.

I got into Lolita in 2003 (and even then, my sources were a bit dated) so my idea of what Lolita is is kind of lagging behind. I don't consider 60 % of coords I see these days (especially the OTT stuff, Taobao brands or most Juliette and Juliette and Justine) to be the same Lolita I knew and loved, just 'pretty dresses'. Old school is just so unmistakably iconic and distinctive but sticks out more amongst normie clothes. I wear new school Lolita simply to have something nice to wear for special normie occasions or going to galleries/museums.

I also couldn't get into prints/different materials until around 2014, I still have a bit of a problem with buying stuff other than cotton.

The classical brands haven't evolved nearly as much from how they used to look so I've pretty much stuck with them, but it is definitely nostalgic to look at oldschool now with this distance in place. Depends on style, but a lot of nowaday's bag styles are actually old or atleast similar. Pic related is old AP, so sweet bags are pretty easy to find. Baby has also printed boston bags with florals which imo go pretty well. I also sometimes use more modern boston bags because they are good size and have nice pockets. Plush bags were in style too. Totes with sipmle prints are also fine.

Any good tips for keeping fancy cluny lace in the right shape? I've had this dress 10 years and have either dry cleaned it or hand washed it, and stretched the lace back into shape after each wash. That takes forever but I hate how it looks crinkly when I don't do it. Any ideas?

I want to spoonfeed you but geez, this shows so little attempt at prior research that I can't be arsed. Take a look through some old pics and see what kind of bags they're using - if you get answers in this thread without looking at inspo you'll only fuck up the rest of your coord anyway. General points to note include that oldschool used simple printed cloth brand totes a heck of a lot more than people ever do nowadays, most bag shapes are simple, crown-shaped novelty bags and some animal bags existed, and there was some crossover with brands like Vivienne Westwood.

To answer your questions:
My introduction to lolita was old school, I discovered it online before OTT sweet had really gained traction, so it'll always be nostalgic for me. I was a baby bat mallgoth who loved historic fashion, partially due to my family's involvement in regency dances and reenactments. Old school married my love of the kind of frumpy antiqueness and my desire to break away and be edgy. Here I am, a decade later, living my teenage dream and trying to wear it as often as I can. I love the simplicity and sturdiness of old school, I could never get into wearing newer stuff daily without constant worry of snagging the chiffon or lace. Plus, it feels more old-fashioned, when I wear it I feel like I've stepped out of another time. Plus, rectangle headdresses are the absolute best and look so ladylike and beautiful.

This pretty much, you should be able to do it in such a way as to hide it. Some headdresses actually have a comb underneath that's been sewn onto it, which is super helpful!

You can clip the sides where the headdress meets the string to tie and hide it with your hair, shouldn't be noticeable at all.

>Recent obsessions? Recent purchases?
I'm buying stupid amounts of casual sweet lately even though I don't know if it'll even suit me, I keep being tempted by that overpriced pinkxwhite Pour Lolita cutsew on auctions.
>What was it that about old school that initially caught your attention? Did it take your eyes time to adjust so to speak?
Blackxwhite and gothic caught my attention first, but it definitely took my eyes time to adjust to the rest. I actually freaked out a bit when I started to get deep into oldschool, since I used to hate oldschool sweet and detachable sleeves and thought gobelin fabrics were absolutely hideous. I got more tolerant over time ("it's nice, but not for me" etc) before I finally got into it, but it's still weird knowing that my past self would think I look disgusting now. One of my old friends said lolita was like a cult or a virus that had taken me over and destroyed my sense of taste.
>How often do you go out in old school?
I've only been out in lolita half a dozen times since January, which is a bit shit. I've been on-and-off ill as well as snowed under with work for months - I made it to four meets but I don't usually wear oldschool to those, and I re-wore old coords to half of them. Kind of sad since I'm still buying oldschool and have a large enough wardrobe to be a lifestyler, I just have no opportunity to wear it. I'm always out during the day, so even though I wear lolita a fair bit at home I rarely post online since I can't get nice photos in natural light.
>Do you think about the philosophy much or is it something you just enjoy wearing?
I'm not rebellious enough these days to connect with the punky side of it, and I have a lot of non-lifestyle interests and hobbies that I can't wear lolita for so I'm not much of a lifestyler, but I love reading pretentious old lolita essays and I'm obsessed with lolita history. I guess I think about the philosophy a lot even though I don't actually personally subscribe to it.

Because most of my pieces aren't machine-washable. I have a lot of velvet and a lot of dark pieces with white lace that might colour bleed, or pieces with cotton lace that shrinks unless it's washed at low temperatures and needs re-shaping after each wash. Most of my non-oldschool lolita stuff is brand or Taobao prints, which, again, aren't exactly wash-and-wear. Lolita ironing takes fucking ages as well. Additionally, even if you just wear something cheap like Bodyline to cook in, strong smells like frying onions would also get into items like petticoats that are much harder to wash and re-fluff (I don't have a tumblr drier). You also risk stuff like spitting oil in clothes making stains that are nearly impossible to get out.

Even with my normal clothes, if I cook a batch of curry or similar wearing jeans and a T-shirt and my hair end up stinking and I usually throw all my clothes in the drier and have a shower afterwards. Going to do a mini-dump of black florals to see how they're coorded, pic related is notable because it uses a black headdress with coloured roses like the one suggested above.

>>9435552
Most people in the UK don't have machine driers at all, they line-dry everything or dry it indoors on drying racks. Even people living in flats don't usually have driers, since they're a fire hazard if the lint trap isn't cleaned. I use a rack like the below, turn the heating on and/or use a dehumidifer to avoid condensation building up indoors if it's too cold to open the windows. I also have a clothing rail and often put things like lolita dresses back on their hangers and hang them up on that to dry.
http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/laundry-cleaning-products/drying-racks/frost-drying-rack-in-outdoor-white-art-40244831/

It's much gentler on clothes and doesn't take that long unless you never switch the heating on, I was astonished how fast even normie clothes got worn out when I was in university accommodation and had to use their washer and driers because there was no space to hang clothes. Ended up throwing out and replacing most of my T-shirts at the end of the year.

Nope, not even in a big city. You can't over-generalize things about the whole country just based on your own eperiences. I have friends from all over the country who have dryers of some kind, combined or separate, but also know that some do do line drying as well where possible, as dryers can be expensive to run. However, on the flip side, if you live in a damp part of the country, not drying things in a dryer can leave your place more prone to damp problems. It depends I think on personal preference and circustances. But enough of this, back to discussing lolita.

You don't see them avertised as included in a rental properly very often. It's fairly standard that outside of student rental properties rentals don't include white goods, you bring your own in. I've seen a mix of things in student properties. Some had their own washer-dryers, some have communal laundrettes for accommodation complexes/campus halls, it entirely depends. I've experienced both while I was at uni.

Thought anons might be interested in this from Antique Beast's blog on their 15th anniversary (22nd June 2015):

>当初ロリータファッションのブームは世間的にも自分的にも1~2年位だろうと思っていたので、 まさかこんなに続けられるとは全く想像していませんでした。

>ブームと言うか、既に1ジャンルとして存在しているロリータファッション...日本を飛び出して世界へまでも広がるとは。

Google Translation:
>Originally I thought that the boom of Lolita fashion would be around one to two years both internationally and personally, so I never imagined that it could continue so much.
>It says a boom, lolita fashion already exists as one genre... Jump out of Japan and spread to the world as well.

It's interesting knowing that a designer who's been there since the beginning expected lolita to be a short-lived fad at first, like so many other Harajuku fashions of the time.

I'm curious about all those older pieces you never ever see on second hand websites or at all. Where are they?
Thrown in the garbage because too old/damaged/...? Forgotten at the back of a japanese woman's closet? In a box in the house of a japanese housewive who keeps them as souvenirs or totally forgot she even had them?

>> No.9435848

>>9435833
Closet Child and I believe other second-hand shops as well don't put most of their stock on their physical webshop, and the older, more damaged or cheaper an item is the less likely they'll consider it worth photographing and uploading to the website. They have something ridiculous like 20 stores in Japan, I'd bet the online stock isn't even 10% of what they physically have.

>> No.9435851

>>9435833
Those other options you listed are probable though, some of them might also be in the hands of Japanese girls/collectors. I'd imagine that a lot of the girls who went to lives and stuff back then were a lot harder on their clothes than people now and some of them may literally have been tossed as worthless. I've also heard that there are mainstream thrift shops in Japan where you can sometimes find lolita items if they're in the right area.

imo old school is as much about feel as it is about the actual pieces, and like any coord, it is about the sum of its parts. the cutsew cuffs or the wristcuffs (i can't tell which) have a black tulle lace that is fairly modern, and that shade of green gives a more modern impression. not that dark green isn't in any old school coords or pieces ever, but I think when you use a more unique color or accessory like that dark green or the beret, you need to think carefully about the other details to give them context. the hair is also a very modern style, as is the necklace. the beret is cute and there were berets used in old school, usually with blazer/skirt sets, but here adds no feel of oldschool, and along with the shoes and necklace and cutsew color and hairstyle, they all read even more modern together. If they were paired a bit differently, they could probably work better, though not the necklace or shoes, and I'd ditch the cutsew if that lace is on the cuffs.

Agreed on the feeling. Even if the outfit would have been techically able to exist during a certain era it can lack the feel of it. This outfit however has very few old school elements. Parka or cardigan isn't exactly old school style. Paired with the wig, beret, jewerly, sheer thights and tulle lace it simply looses the feeling of old school. If the cardigan was switched to Baby's bunny hood one, she had headbow instead, the jewerly was removed and thights replaced with thick lace top ones this could be a passable old school coord with similar feel.

Anons, help! Is it acceptable/would it look ok to wear white accessories (so socks, headdress etc) with a beige dress or should I try to buy beige socks?

>> No.9439507

>>9439502
In my opinion it's fine. I have three beige dresses and one beige blouse and I use off white socks and shoes because atleast shoes are pretty impossible to match to Baby's beige. Works fine. Just try to make it look intentional rather than accidental.

>> No.9439538

>>9439502
imo as long as you match the sock's whiteness to something, like your headdress or a detachable collar or blouse under a jsk, then it's fine. just remember to balance. my basic starting rule is like, match at least one thing from each "half" of your body, such as the waist up should have one thing the same shade as white as the socks. (you can get away with not doing it, but if you're unsure i think it's a good place to start.) the only exception imo is shoes, black or white shoes don't always need to be matched depending on the coord.

>> No.9439542

>>9439502
Yeah, oldschool often mixes white/beige/cream, it was less of a big deal back then. It probably looks best to make it look deliberate, so don't have just one item be a different shade unless that one item is your dress, use a mix throughout.

4chan always thinks blogspot links are spam but if you Google "Old School Lolita Angelically Sweet" it'll come up with a fyeahlolita post about it.

>> No.9439548

Think of it as a black/red/pink/whatever dress instead, and make the white pieces go together despite the colour of the dress and it'll look fine.

For >>9439074, the shoes are modern tea parties, those sheer striped socks are mainstream trend items that only came in in the past year ago and I'd never seen in my life in the 00s, whether in oldschool or not. The parka is obviously more recent AP as well. The beret, wig and make-up are things that she could have gotten away with if the rest of the coord was on point oldschool, but since it isn't it just cements the styling of that oldschool JSK as not being oldschool at all.

For >>9439077, the dress is noticeably Angelic Pretty's Vintage School JSK, which came out in 2012, so it's not even an oldschool main piece. It's got an appropriate enough design that it could have been worn in an oldschool coord if the other elements were oldschool, but everything but the striped socks is pretty standard for more 00s sweet (bear bag, hot pink bracelets and ring) so in the end it doesn't work as oldschool sweet (to be really nitpicky, the RHS are tied with ribbons, which is also a more recent style that oldschool RHS didn't usually have, and the cardigan looks a bit more modern to me even though cardigans were seen in oldschool).

In both cases, if you'd said the pics were "oldschool-inspired" or oldschool dresses with a modern twist I would have acquiesced, since they're not bad coords, but they're def not oldschool.

For the anon who was asking about lightweight oldschool clothes for summer, keep an eye out for Baby's Tiered JSK. I just won a listing for it in sax, and I already own another colourway. Lolibrary says it has a polyester lining, and while I can't speak for the 2010 release (distinguishable from having rose lace instead of daisy lace on the bodice), the 2002 version definitely isn't lined. It's comfy, nice and cool, not see-through, and even looks good without a petti (YMMV on the 2010 release since I think that has more material in the skirt).
