I own a lot of clothes I don't fit in to, specifically blouses and coats. I wear my most comfortable pieces almost every week. As long as it's all laundered in between wears it's nobody's business how often you wear something. What do you gulls do when people point/stare/ask questions when you wear lolita?

I've been buying a lot lately but never wear it because I'm stupid-levels of insecure, and panic/scramble with words when I'm nervous so I want to be prepared for any confrontation if/when I do finally get around to wearing it out.

>> No.9388286

>>9388283
If they point and stare, I just flat out ignore it or look them right back in the eye and smile.
If they ask questions, it depends on what it is. If it's genuine curiosity, I'll usually answer politely. If it's a dumb question, I usually get them a short answer back.

If people stare I typically stare back. If people try to take pics I call them the fuck out OR take pictures of them back.
First thing to remember - there are a number of people who are ill-mannered and obnoxious but are still genuinely curious and just don't realize how much of a fucknut they're being. I've asked people who I've seen taking photos of me and my friends/comm members to stop, and like 80% of the time they're nice about it and apologize for being a turd, 20% of the time they get flustered on stop. I've had very few people who are rude about it although they do exist. Beyond that though I've personally never gotten into any sort of heated confrontation - or at least not yet (knock on wood).
For those who are genuinely curious I'll answer their questions within reason - generally the just wanna know why we're dressed up/what's going on/things like that. If I'm with friends or my comm I just say we're a fashion club or we're a group of friends who are having a day out. That satisfies most people. If they ask about it some more, I'll just say it's japanese street fashion and people usually get it and move on.
If people are being rude/dumb I'll be curt/smart back. I think the level of rudeness you get depends on where you are. (country, which part of the country, town vs. city vs rural area, which neighborhood, etc.) If you are nervous about going out in lolita, if you have a comm or any friends into it you may want to just try going out with them to build up confidence.

But dear lord I wish my friends would do the same. Whenever we're in a group and someone stops us with a polite question the other girls give them a look like they've just asked how many dicks they've taken and then it falls on me to quickly explain it with a smile that excuses the nasty looks. Like seriously: look at a room thread on here sometime and you'll see that this setup is super common, anyways. Beyond that the colors arent the same: the girl on the left painted her bookshelves and her wall, she has primarily open shelves and her collection looks to be mostly books and funko pop figures. The girl on the right has closed white shelves and collects rilakuma plushes. So they both shop at IKEA? God! Wow! I can't BELIEVE two people could both shop at the most popular cheap furniture store in the world!!!!!

The left girl's outfit doesn't look anything like the outfit on the right, either. And so what if they both buy shoes from BAIT? Big fucking deal. What I wonder is: Are those kind of events English-speakers-friendly? I cannot speak German well, although I do understand it, but I can speak and understand English pretty nicely, together with Spanish and French.

While I understand those latter languages are not as spread as English around the Lolita Community, are all these "worldwide" announced events held in the Language of the country hosting it or would it be able to attend them only knowing English?

I think most of us were probably there at some point, though.

It's almost weird how quickly you go from thinking people are crazy for buying brand to owning a whole wardrobe yourself. All it took for me was a visit to the BtSSB store in SF and I immediately understood why everything cost as much as it did.

In a way some stuff is almost a good deal. If you compare a brand dress to a business suit of similar quality, for example, the lolita piece is often cheaper and substantially more complex.

Classic & gothic doesn't really do comfy as much. Punk and sweet have cutsew/skirt combos. There's also brand cardigans but they are thin and not really comfy.

For a turtleneck/skirt coord, or even turtleneck/JSK coord, the important thing is to have some lace or feminine elements on the turtleneck. AP and SWANKISS have done cute turtlenecks that could work, or maybe you can find a normie one that suits and add accessories so it doesn't look too plain.

The brand cutsews and cardigans I've seen tend to be thin and not too comfy, probably for silhouette reasons. Fairy kei/Spank brands make comfier.

Either way, careful on the length. Many comfy sweaters (esp Western off-brand & Spank) are designed to go to the hipbone and don't work with a skirt that poofs out at your natural waist

Axes Femme, Fint/An another angelus, Liz Lisa, even Honey and DreamV have all done cute and comfy cutsews which are suitable for classic and sweet. Axes femme is particularly good at the comfy but feminine turtleneck. Other options include taobao (the spreadsheet has a shop featuring frilly turtlenecks), and I've seen several on aliexpress. I have not seen such options at your brick and mortar western shops, sadly, so asian stores may have the most options for cute turtlenecks. For classic, you'll want to tuck in the cutsew anyway which may not be comfortable for some people, but it's pretty good for me to work in all day. You can also use more casual cardigans in the place of more form fitting boleros for a looser, more casual coordinate, but you should take care that the cardigan is appropriately matched to the main piece and has appropriate decoration, or else it will look 'thrown on' and messy.

Another option is to dress up a plain turtleneck with a large brooch, necklace, or other accessory under a JSK or cardigan to hide that it's so plain. I've done before with a uniqlo turtleneck, and it's worked.

Comfy is actually pretty easy to achieve in classic if you think about it. I'm not a sweet sort of person but you could probably apply the same tactics to sweet.

people getting scammed on mbok happens waaaay less than people being scammed on western sites.

I've only heard of someone being scammed on mbok because they participated in one of those kinds of auctions that were like "everyone keeps bidding and the higher the bid goes the more stuff I'll add, but I'll never specify what brand the items are or what items I will add" and then it ended up being really shitty things. That's the only thing I ever saw.

Like yes, be cautious, but as long as you know real from the replica and the seller has proof photos you should be good, just like as if you were buying on LM or something

>what makes it passable

What you want to do is match the styles, and look for feminine detailing.

For e.g., ETC’s cutsews are really simple-looking, but when you look closer, their turtleneck collar usually has a line of lace around it, maybe the edge of the sleeves has lace as well, and sometimes there is a bit of cutesy embroidery on it. Little feminine details like these make all the difference between looking like you’re wearing toned down/casual, or looking like a budget-lita who threw on a gorgeous dress over a cheapskate normie turtleneck. So, feminine details.

As for matching styles. If you’re wearing a simple dress with very few detailing, a simple turtleneck would work well. But if you’re wearing a jsk with ruffled tiers, bows, pearl chokers, lace gloves, etc etc — it’s going to look confused when paired with a simple turtleneck, even if the turtleneck is frilly and cute. For those, you want one of those fancy cutsews with lacy princess sleeves and about a million lace ruffles and bows. And if you’re wearing a cutesy pastel print, you’ll want an equally cute cutsew/blouse with details like bows, polka dots/hearts, pastel lace, and so on.

In general, you’ll want to think about your outfit as a whole, instead of getting any random thing to throw under a jsk just so you can wear the jsk.
