Her dark eyemakeup, and the old style print and cut of the dress would still make this old school, even if it wasn't an old photo. Old school lolita can still be OTT, it can still be sweet or classic. It just has to look old, and lack the refinery, the wigs, and the polish that modern lolita has.

Like what? I don't get why old school is always said to be ita nowadays because I can't really point out anything ita besides the lack off matchiness and make up/hair styling. Even then most of the girls have just much more natural make up and hair and colors don't clash but nowadays lolitas have gotten used to wigs and heavier make up because it's worn more to events and such. Second of all, it is old school. It is a totally different style than most sweet today, right down to the cork shoes and how the print looks (relatively few colors, only pink white and blue, polkadots on top of being a printed dress, the print itself is small and not on the border). It's over a decade old, so that quantifies it as old school to me.

Most of the outfits that anon linked look like they were from the mid to late 2000's in terms of styling, which I think is the point when we begin to see stuff that look like today's definition of sweet lolita. Old school tends to refer more to 90's and early 2000's stuff, which looks less cutesy. Pic related is some old school in pastels.

Everything I posted is (as far as I am aware) over ten years old or more. I think once something passes the decade mark, it quantifies as old school. As lolita goes on, more and more things will be considered old school lolita, since lolita has gone through multiple phases and trends over the last twenty something years.

And what is mid 2000's about >>9334107? Tartan, rocking horses, the style of wig fits right in with the early 2000s idea of lolita. I mean hell, Kamikaze Girls came out in 2004 and that could be considered either early or mid 2000s depending on who you ask.

Baby still re-release solid, oldschool-style pieces, Japanese lolitas still wear them, but they coordinate them with items and styles that were not available in the oldschool era, so the outfits are not oldschool. Old school will always be from the same time period. There's different terms for different waves, but old school will always be the same (late 90s to early 00s). Old school was already a thing in 2006 that was clearly distinguished from the fashion at that time. Sorry that you don't understand fashion in general as well as being clueless about lolita.

anything bad quality makes you instant ita. stick to cotton and thick (no idea how to express that in english?) lace, minimal color palettes and prints (if any). wear actual old stuff and not new/taobao versions of the old stuff, since they tend to have worse quality.

idk how new you are, but no airy fabrics and "holy melty mermaid of the chocolatey crosscarnival" prints obviously.

i love oldschool because of the excellent construction, cute but small details, great fabric quality and beautiful lace. i'm not even that much of a nostalgiafag desu, i just like good quality clothes.

Closet Child, Wunderwelt, Japanese auctions, Lacemarket, Facebook sales... It really depends what you are looking for. Baby's Karami and Babydoll for example can be spotted pretty much everywhere and for cheap but they won't likely be old. If you are looking for actual old school dresses Mbok and Yahoo auctions are the best source but you will need a bit of luck and knowledge to succeed. If you prefer Western market you will have to be a bit more active to be able to spot the pieces you want in time but usually the seller has information about the dress which Japanese sellers don't provide. I would say anything released around 2005 is still fairly easy and afforable to find.

Something I loved about the old days was the makeup, or lack of. There was none of this perfectly polished insta-ready, photoshoot-ready bullshit. I've started really looking after my skin lately and wearing a lot less makeup (mostly less foundation, concealer etc) and I feel so much better.
I know there was a lot of goth makeup when the vk and goth influence was much stronger back in the day, but the opposite shone through often in street snaps.

I have so many favorites but the one must be this or a poodle cardigan from Meta. So comfy, cute, casual and poodles. I also bought a pair of beaten up Montreal shoes for like 3€ and they are honestly the cutest. Sooo comfy and flattering but in a pretty bad shape. They are white with a platform so there is nothing to do to save them I guess.

What would you say are oldschool bags? The bags I see in these pictures seem pretty much the same as what brands offer today.

I use AP boston bags and other simple brand bags. I abaolutely love straw bags and it's a shame how hard they are to find second hand. However, now I don't have money and Baby rereleased an absolutely lovely straw bag and some Taobao brand did (it could have been last year though) earlier too.
