Depends on the guest. Some guests i just suck it up, some i put a sign up saying i'm gone until X time bye. A couple hundred bucks (if even because sometimes people do just come back) is nothing if the guest is for example usually never goes to cons and may never return and this might be the only chance to meet them / get an autograph

Looks like A-kon is switching to a full jury this year. Hopefully they'll be clear about what their criteria is; they've always been damn organized and open in the past.

>> No.9295219

I've had a few years of experience doing anime oriented cons, but next year will be my first comic con artist alley. I'm wondering if any of you guys here have some insight on the customer base, if it's any different in spending trends, prices, items offered, etc? From just guessing I would assume there is some overlap between the two crowds.

>> No.9295498

>>9295219
Comicons are, in general, going to have a much older fan base and are much more willing to spend on higher pricetags than Anime con attendees. A lot fewer $1-$5 sales, a lot more big ticket items. Of course, that generally comes with the understanding that you have a lot more (often professional) competition, and that a smaller percentage of people will be interested in what you have to offer if you're anime-focused.

That's good to hear, I actually have quite a bit of original art and a small book planned of my work that I was going to make anyway. Mostly ink drawings. I'm not too much into most western comic fandoms, but I think if I cater to the monster/sci-fi/horror crowd it could work.

Would you price things higher? At anime cons I do 1 for $15 and 2 for $20 for 11x17 prints, just packaged in plastic sleeves without backing.

>> No.9295794

guys, I'm a moron and need advice.

I've done single-sided charms but just did double for the first time. The vendor asked me which image I wanted flipped, so I told them I wanted the back side flipped. The preview picture they showed me had all of the back images flipped and the front images normal, so I thought everything was fine.

All my charms came in today with the front image flipped and not the back, so I have a bunch of charms of characters with messed up hairstyles and outfits, since it's all backwards. Is this my fault or the vendor's? Is there something I'm not understanding about double-sided charms?

Vograce! All the other vendors state from the start they'll automatically flip the front side, so it would be no question with them how I should set up my files/which side gets flipped. But since Vograce specifically asked me which side I wanted flipped, and then flipped the opposite...

It ended up being something like this: <-

>> No.9296005

>>9295821

I'm kinda nervous that this happens to me with Vograce. I sent the files with the back side mirrored to match the lines of the front (which was not mirrored) and Vicky sent me the outlines with the back image flipped to how it should be printed, so I hope they will come printed right... Some of mine have text so it will suck if they come out backwards.

>> No.9296136

>>9295661

I had a feeling. This might be a good con for me to table at even if I have to take serious time away from the table because it looks like people will be coming in based on the guests. I do hope this con seriously prepares for this potential influx though.

>>9295100

I'm curious what their criteria is. I don't feel my art is bad but full juries are never an issue of "is your art good" right? It's more about the curated style they want? I'm nervous now but at least I don't have to play the game of "submit in 2 seconds or get waitlisted." My heart can't take that.

Yea I actually just realized that they didn't follow any pattern at all (printing left side of a two sided design as the "front") on my batch of like 7 designs. Seems like it's just whatever they feel like.

>> No.9296560

I did the same but had the wrong side flipped. I just want to know if there's any way to make sure that the correct side gets flipped with them because it really sucks to have a ton of charms I can't sell now b/c the characters are all inaccurate. Do you guys just not use Vograce for charms where it would matter how the flipped image looks, since it seems like there's no way to control which way they'll do it?

>Do you have some kind of order form that the customer fills out like # of characters, portrait/full body, ink/color, etc., and then you use that to determine the price?
>Do you take payment before or after the commission is completed? Do you do a deposit beforehand and then the rest later?
>How do you go about contacting them when the piece is done? Do you give them a phone # or just tell them to check back at the end of the day/con.

Yes get all the information you can so you can reference it later if you forget, any contact info and references and descriptions of what they want, it is easy to forget in the midst of low-sleep high-stress con environs.

Yes take payment first, those of us that get comms from artists are fine with that, anyone not fine with that is not worth your time.

Yes hit them up via text, worst case it's on them to pick it up after, I know I've probably missed almost 50 comms at this point due to errors in my own record system or AAs closing on me before I can finish all the pickups, although I'm usually able to hit up an artists the next con or the con after.

Sorry for the huge pic.

But I have the standard cellphone strap. I also bought some of these style keychains. I was thinking of offering customers an option to switch to the keychains for an extra cost. Whay do you think is a reasonable rate? The keychains cost me just a smidge over 25 cents each.

I've discussed numbers with some artists that a lot of people might consider "mediocre" and they do make enough money to justify doing cons to themselves.

In some cases, it's because they think several hundred ~$1k is a huge profit margin because they haven't seen other people regularly pull in $5k and above. In other cases, they might have had a lucky con where they did really well (having the right memey stuff at the right time, riding a cash cow trend first, etc) and they're hoping to meet that profit margin again despite the initial popularity wave of whatever they were banking on dying out. So they keep doing cons with out-dated merch that only sold well when it did because the fandom itself was popular not because their art was good and barely breaking even.

I think the general trend of more and more newbies joining the scene is 1) info on AAs is much easier to access now and consolidated into one place like AANI on Facebook and 2) artists will convince their art friends to table too - that's what I did with my friends.

If they go through your luggage, you'll get a slip like this. Usually it's random, this is the first slip I've gotten traveling from Los Angeles to Toronto over the past 6 years and they check it at any random point you stop. My spouse though has gotten multiple over their two years of traveling.

Also I've gotten away with having 12 different sculptures in my bag but I don't think that's a high enough number to consider something to tax and was more obvious they were personal items since they were just in a bag. I also don't recommend putting anything fragile in your checked bag, only your carry on to ensure that nothing gets damaged.

To avoid duties and other taxes, I would definitely mail your stuff to a friend if possible. If not, consider a shipping service that's willing to hold your package at the office (such as UPS or FedEx). For actual documents for tabling, I'm afraid I'm not much help. :s

Also, get her to make a spreadsheet. It's amazing how it helps.

I just started alleying this last February after helping out my friends for the past three years and honestly I feel like the best decision I made was starting at small cons and doing prints only for my first two. I know I mostly got lucky but I actually made a decent profit.
I'd look for a small college convention that has a small table cost and steer her towards postcards/prints, at least for her first convention, since they're cheap to make and have a high profit percentage.

If your forte are accessories, I don't think travelling around Nordic cons would be very profitable. From what I know, Denmark has a pretty quiet AA scene (a gull from Denmark further up in the thread actually described it as well) and people don't really seem to care about the AA. Sweden seems to be about the same, even though there are more sellers and a bit more interest towards AAs in general. Finland has the most active AA scene in the Nordics (in my opinion), but like I said before, I doubt selling accessories at a normal anime con would get you to break even after all the travel costs. Finland has Hellocon which sounds more like your thing, though. Maybe check it out?

Well, there's no Hellocon anymore, but the organizers are planning smaller scale events. The next one is in February, called "Looking for Alice".

I agree that we have decent AA scene here in Finland, but from what I've heard and seen myself it's a bit of hit or miss with anything out of the season items, as in obscure series or original art. There are some regular AA sellers who sell bjd clothes, jewelry, accessories etc. on the side with prints, but they usually share the table with someone who is selling fan art. I'd look around a bit more before committing to our cons.

depends how you are with your money. I'm super picky and rarely buy anything, but if I do, its never over $50. I have friends who will spend literally every single dollar they bring, so, eh.
Bringing anywhere between $30 and $100 should be good, should be enough for food and merch. You can always just grab a business card of an artist you like if you like something they have and buy it later if you didn't bring enough cash.

>> No.9310443

In my area (pacific nw) Prints are usually 15-25$. Stickers 1-2$, buttons 2-3$, cell phone charms 8-12$. Anime figures are between 15-150$ depending on quality. Official straps are 7-15$. Think about how many things you want to pick up, and budget accordingly.

I'm a terrible artist alley whore, and an itabagger, and I collect figures, so I usually spend around 400-600$ in the AA & dealer's hall. My older brother usually spends 30-50$, and only if there's unique pokemon stuff or clever video game t-shirts around. It depends on the person.

Personally, I'd recommend bringing a little bit more than you think you're going to spend in case you run into that one extra thing on the last day that you really want. I also recommend setting a strict budget, and sticking to it. Never dip into your food budget for merch.

We also do the food run thing if we're out of town and want something more meaty, and so far our venues have had some decently priced food places like food trucks or local fast food that's not too far a walk. At the hotel we usually order a pizza or local takeout if we really want more protein and I didn't join a food run during the day. Also bringing water and juice helps. I've even brought slim fast shakes to help keep up energy and be full.

If you don't have buddies to help you make food runs, I hear making friends with neighbors isn't bad, and we've done food runs for our neighbors who don't have booth mates and can't get out.

eating out 3 days in a row for 2 or 3 meals a day? Thats way too expensive for me. I normally eat out on one day after the con and have left overs for the next night, but eating out for every meal would be too much.

I guess I should have clarified, what cheap meals do you bring to eat during the con.

I didn't say I eat out everyday lol, and I don't eat out 2/3 times a day for 3 days straight. These are options, to be paired with others. Mix and match meal plan.

I even said I bring leftovers, and if I didn't do a food run during the day, I'll join one at night.
Not do both. That's nuts.

I actually do eat out every day for almost every meal at cons haha. I understand that's a lot of money if you're new to cons though.

I've brought cliff bars before, but because i need protein more than carbs i switched to quest bars (or substitute any other good tasting protein bar). I would also bring small bagged snacks like chips or pre-peeled/segmented fruits like oranges (i mean only good for the first day really but whatever) and cookies. like a box of thin mints.

Honestly look back, that was a really bad diet but since it was only a couple days a month it was fine over all i guess.

I think it's still to deter less serious artists- imagine the number of applications they're going to have to go through. I'm sure it's just to pare down the numbers, and potentially get through the waitlist faster (if people apply, get in, and decide $300 is too much after all).

I have hella allergies, so I can't eat out at all.

At the con I rely a lot on nuts and peanut butter sandwiches. I also really like Bobo Bars, the fruity ones are really good and actually have decent food value (the non fruity ones are a bit too dry). I like bananas because they're easy to scarf down, even if peels are annoying.

I get a pack of something to shove in the microwave at the hotel for meaty food value at night. My current favorite are costco tamales. That of course only works if you have a minifridge or a cooler.

I usually eat something light from a restaurant because warm food is comfy, or if I'm at a hotel with breakfast I bring some of it in a tupperware. If I'm driving locally I sometimes stop by a bakery in the morning and get a few fresh buns and a coffee. What my friends used to do years ago (our group was like 10 tables sitting together) was that one person of the group who was an avid chef would make a ton of food like fried rice and dumplings and we'd pay her to have fresh food all weekend.

As for snacks, I like dried fruits and small crackers, stuff that isn't messy. And a ton of water/Gatorade.

I'm a bit extreme on the frugal side and I bring my rice cooker to hotels so I can have rice and steamed vegetables in the morning/night. Midday is peanut butter and honey sandwiches, nuts, dried fruit, coconut milk. Stuff that stores easy.

To be honest, I kinda just go hungry most of the time so I don't have to spend money eating out, and when I do go out I'll order off the value menu of a fast food place.

How much does it usually cost to get an artist booth at a con? I'm thinking about having a merch booth this year idunno if it's worth it. My stuff isn't straight up "anime" nor would you think is anime at first glance persay but there's certainly minor influences there forsure. What should I focus on?

You should aim lower if you can't be bothered looking up prices yourself. Tabling at a con takes a lot of preparation and you won't risk as much tabling at a smaller convention for your first time. You'll gain a better understanding of what works for you and what you need with your experience gained.

If you have a big following, Tictail is excellent because you can drive customers there from ur own site with 0 fees. Etsy is super nice if you don't have the marketing power on your own. I avoided Etsy for a long time because of their listing fees. But I opened my shop for the first time for Black Friday/Christmas season a few months ago and made like $6k in 2 months. Don't underestimate the normies/clueless family members who shop on Etsy for their weeb children/grandchildren.

The only downside is dealing with clueless people who don't understand that you're not a huge corporation.

If you want something simple and flexible, I usually have like half a table of various books and I use these. They fold up and travel well and generally people understand that they're allowed to pick up and flip through. Another thing I do is to actually put a small stack of each book underneath the stand, so they can flip through but they see the other copies right there. For some reason people seeing a stack of books instead of just the one display copy seems to increase sales, don't ask me about the psychology there.

Here's a link, but there's a lot of other options on there if you want something fancier: https://www.amazon.com/Gibson-Holders-2-Wire-Display-12-Pack/dp/B00NEDHOJA/

I've also seen people use something like this, but a small tabletop version: https://www.amazon.com/Steffy-Wood-Products-Book-Display/dp/B008FLBANW It looks nice but is more work to transport.
