So my SO and I were talking about early lolita and ended up looking at the Japanese wikipedia entry for lolita fashion. Neither of us read Japanese well so we made do with Google translate but it seems that the Japanese entry claims that there's more connection to the Nabokov book than the English entry, even going so far as to provide a synopsis of the plot. It also appeared to be much more thorough. Are there any Japanese reading anons out there who can confirm this? And as another question, do we have any wiki anons who might care to expand our article on the English entry?

Why would we need information on the book on our wiki? I thought it was common knowledge that Japanese normies named the fashion lolita because of the book/film but that doesn't mean that the fashion itself is related to it.

>> No.9269189

>>9269178
Sorry, I wasn't being very specific. I meant that our article could use some expansion in general because the Japanese entry is much more thorough.

Separately, whomever wrote the Japanese entry made it seem like lolitas have an interest in appearing like sexually precious young girls and wanted to know if I was reading it correctly.

I don't know Japanese either but I wouldn't take that very seriously. It was probably not written by a Japanese lolita, because they also don't want to be seen like that, and wished to change the name of the fashion, just like us. Some of them insist on using a different spelling for lolita to make it look different from lolita complex and the book character.

I spotted this from the gallery. I have the necklace version but the pic was too blurry. However, the necklace is from ETC, the poodle has a rhinestone in it's mouth and the tag is a crown that says "cute". I didn't there were commercially available jewerly brands used. I wonder if the necklace is really that old.

Any recent purchases anyone? I spotted someone selling a pile of brand for 50€ and it was seriously so good deal. All Baby, ivory Eleonor jsk (older release with cotton lace), unknown floral op and two skirts. The Eleonor jsk is sp gorgerous and I love the floral op too but the sleeves don't fit. I started to work in the stable in the end of the summer and I have been there every day over a month now and my arms have grown a lot. I wonder if it's worth altering. I hope my other unelastic sleeved ops still fit me... I got an ivory velveteen jsk by Baby also, can't wait to wear it.

Not sure if this is the right thread to ask, but it's sort of relevant as it looks pretty old!

Is anyone able to identify this dress? Or at very least, put a date on it?

All I know is it's Baby, but otherwise I have no info on it and was unsuccessful when posting in the "What is That Dress" Facebook group.

It's driving me nuts!!!!!! (Also apologies if picture is sideways - posting from mobile)

>> No.9273729

>>9273181
This dress is pissing me off too! I don't recognise that dress at all - the design is similar to the Waist Ribbon JSK, but the bodice and straps are totally wrong for it. I searched through all the BtSSB JSKs on lolibrary marked as either Black x White or Black x Offwhite, and all the BtSSB sets marked Black, Black x White or Black x Offwhite, with no luck. I also Google imaged "baby the stars shine bright waist ribbon button strap jsk", "egl comm sales btssb waist ribbon button strap jsk", "baby the stars shine bright button strap lucky pack dress", "baby the stars shine bright lucky pack sailor dress", "baby ウエストリボンジャンパースカート", "babyssb ウエストリボンジャンパースカート", "baby the stars shine bright ウエストリボンジャンパースカート", "ベイビー ウエストリボンジャンパースカート" and "ベイビーザスターズシャインブライト ウエストリボンジャンパースカート" with no relevant results either, even looking for stuff that could have had the straps modified to be that way.

My next instinct would be to look through GLBs and shop blogs for the suspected year of release, but there are no leads on that score either. To be honest, I don't think that JSK actually looks that old, especially with those straps - going off gut instinct here, I'd say probably post-2004, but with that lace it's definitely not super recent either. Guessing it might also be an LP or similar cheap set looking at the design. Could you tell me the information on the other tag inside? It should say either MADE IN JAPAN or MADE IN CHINA, and if it says MADE IN CHINA it's definitely a more recent release.

If you can be arsed, I'd suggest looking through all magazine scans available in order until you find it. This works most of the time, although you do get the odd thing that was never advertised in KERA or the GLB.

>> No.9273734

>>9273729
>>9273181
That lace was commonly used in 2001-2002, and the weird shape of the bodice was characteristic of that timeframe as well. However, similar designs were made and released a couple times in years following. If I had to wager, I'd say the dress is likely 2001-2002. You should post a photo of the inside care tag. Those were pretty much all the same after 2002, but there's a chance that if it's different it could be a dead giveaway of how old the dress is.

>> No.9273738

>>9273734
To clarify, when I said "not that old", I meant "not so old that the reason we can't find it is because it's pre-2000", since I wasn't sure how old anon meant when she said "pretty old!" Should have made that clearer.

>> No.9273743

>>9273738
That's fine, anon; your advice to her was pretty solid.

Have you seen many pre-2000 pieces and have any tips on identifying them? I have an BTSSB OP that I'm fairly certain is late 90's, but I haven't been able to fully confirm it. The best anyone could find was someone wearing it in a street snap from 2000. I really want to find the exact year and see if I can get any original info/adverts for it, since I love reading what they had to say about their old stuff.

Have you tried https://web.archive.org/web/20000616235040/http://www.babyssb.co.jp/ ? Or the Kera scans from 1998/1999? I'm not actually sure where Baby used to advertise during this period.

I have tried the web archive and unfortunately it's older than their website, so it's not there, but I haven't tried Kera scans! That may be my best bet. If someone has a place to access old Kera scans (like a Flikr or something), then I'd love to look through them.

Okay, so get this.. it does not have a care tag!!
I am sort of leaning towards its just some cheap piece of shit with a Baby tag sewn into it?

The dress itself is a decent quality material, the lace is nice and the construction looks pretty good when I searched over it for the tags. HOWEVER, the buttons look cheap, the zipper is a bulky YKK one and the dress itself is pretty short, a good 3 inches above my knees - its only about 79cm long or 84cm including the lace?

I have no idea what it is now haha. I might have a look over the old scans though and see if there is anything similar or with similar lace..

But until then, its a mystery I guess?

>> No.9273867

>>9273852
Any signs of a care tag being cut out? It might be very old (it's possible the buttons have been replaced over time as well), but I'm not sure. I have a 2001 Baby skirt and it's got a care tag like normal.

Being short and cheap-looking doesn't mean it's not Baby by any means, and I doubt someone would randomly sew the tag into a dress that wasn't.

>>9273852
No, I'd say it's still definitely Baby. It's very characteristic of their designs and has their lace in it, so I wouldn't worry about that. It may have been a very early lucky pack piece or even a sample!

>> No.9274253

>>9274204
Nope, you just have to look through all the listings for a brand. Japanese lolitas don't tag stuff as "old school" like we do, and it seems that some people who are selling really old stuff don't want to be open about the age of the piece as they're scared it'll decrease people's willingness to buy. You have to know what to look for.
