I am genuinely curious. Not trying to troll...

Why are asian cosplayers generally so good and western cosplayers generally so terrible?

It's always super easy to find amazing asian cosplays where the cosplayer looks beautiful but yet when it comes to westerners it's like trying to find a needle in a haystack.

What gives? Does cosplay in the west just attract uglies for some reason? It's embarrassing.

You're mostly seeing the nice ones because those become popular and spread out from the Japanese corner of the internet, whereas there's no such filter on the awful messes from our side of the globe. Also photoshop like other anons mentioned and I guess being a gross fatty is less accepted over there in general.

1. I think the prevalence and acceptance of photoshop (especially more extreme photoshop) is higher.
2. Photos you find from asia tend to be higher quality or just have better composition. Hall shots from the west are particularly unflattering most of the time. I am sure there are tons of shitty photos out there from Asia, but the ones that come up on search engines for me tend to look nice.
3. A lot of cosplayers in the west are young and don't know anything about makeup, wigs, etc.
4. Cute and plain asian cosplayers seem to have facial structures that are easily manipulated into looking anime.
5. A lot of people in the west are fat.

asian people tend to buy their costumes moreso than the west, and therefore there is less of the terrible con photos so prevalent with western cosplayers of baby's first cosplay/time sewing etc
there are still plenty of shitty asian cosplayers, it's just they usually don't make their way to english channels because they aren't tagged in english or posted on western sites.

Cosplay in the east isnt just restrictive a lot of it is cooperate and people are paid to cosplay.

CBA to archive but almost all the early Zootopia cosplays were by asians, and they were all terrible (uninspired design choices, shitty construction, cheap shortcuts) and only got reposted because 1) first!!! 2) kawaii bunny cosplayed by a kawaii asian!!!

Another factor that a lot of people don't realize is that cosplay is a lot more restricted in Japan- especially at big events like comiket. You're not allowed to take any photos outside of the cosplay arena, you're not allowed to arrive at the event or leave in cosplay, and you have to pay a small fee to use the cosplay changing rooms. For photographers, you have to have an actual camera- no cell phones allowed. So that automatically takes away the unflattering hall shots, and it also goes a long way to weed out the half-assed closet cosplay, since if you have to pay to cosplay, you'd better make it worth it.

Another factor, at least in Japan, is that people are a hell of a lot more private and more selective when it comes to taking and uploading photos. Terrible closet cosplays still exist, but they're not going to get photographed, and they're certainly not going to make it onto the internet. Like the other anons have said, we really only see the best and most popular cosplay. The mediocre and the bad get weeded out and forgotten.

Even if it's true, photoshop/makeup is irrelevant in this argument/debate because it's a consistent factor for both sides. The problem isn't heavy makeup or circle lenses or shoop, the problem is that Asian cosplayers use all of these things and are glorified as impossibly beautiful cosplay gods/goddesses. If a white cosplayer uses heavy makeup and shoop, they're "fake" and "trying to cover something up".
Asian cosplayers are also supposedly all good cosplayers and people think that there are no ugly/fat/bad cosplayers which is untrue. The ugly/fat/bad ones just never see the light of efame and are limited to being posted on accounts like cosbusu and Weibo Tiebans about ugly cosplayers.

Yeah this, in Asia, you can't just moonlight as a cosplayer while holding down a real day job. In Asia, if you want to be good, you have to choose one side, commit, and in doing so necessarily burn bridges with the other side.

If you choose cosplay as your career, you're probably going to be disowned by your parents, frowned upon by normal society, and have to eek out a living as a neet for some time. Most folks don't go down this path, and those who do but don't make it usually kill themselves... But those who do wind up looking really good because they had to in order to survive.

It's not that white people are somehow uglier than Asians, it's just that on average white cosplayers will never be as desperate and hungry to improve as Asian cosplayers. One thing I do notice is that there is a good ratio of "story shots" vs glamor photos.

Look back to the "expectation vs reality" meme that briefly circulated. It's now coincidence that 99% of the photos shared are of Japanese cosplayers. US has a larger emphasis toward individual fame and looking good so you get cosplayers in super faltering shots. They're really good with looking pretty but it all runs samey.

Japanese also has more industries that cater toward nich cosplay needs such as studios with multiple cosplay sets
