It's a little early, but let's get a Dragoncon thread started.
Who's going? Any new cosplays? favorite past Dcon moments?

The hype starts now.

>> No.9115696

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMKAEI3dnyg

here's some Dragoncon beatdownboogie to get the ball rolling.

>> No.9115762

I'm staying at the Marriott, my tickets have been purchased way in advanced, but I lost my job a month ago. I haven't finished my costumes, and I have no money. Fuck fuck fuck, I'm not ready.

>> No.9115781

I'll be there. Somebody convinced me to do Ekko from League.
3D printing a part for his sword right now. Feeling regret as I won't be getting any sleep with this noise but I can't stop mid print.

Send help.

>> No.9115784

I need one more model for my group's part in the j-fashion show. Not gonna reveal what brand we're representing cus I like surprises, but it's menhera. You will have to purchase your coordinate, but you'll get a discount on your order when ordering 3 or more items and hey, the clothes are cute and reasonably priced.

The reason this isn't being done in the traditional fashion show style (You borrow the clothes and give them back to the seller when you're done modeling them) is because the designer isn't actually coming to the con and it'd be a real shitshow of them shipping us the clothes and us shipping them back with the risk of them getting damaged in transit.

So, if you're on board with the idea, shoot me an email gulls. You'll need to add me on fb and contact the fashion show organizers to let them know you're interested.

Should I already be looking into reserving a hotel room? I'm still low on money...

I don't need to stay down-downtown, so I may just commute 30~ minutes for Saturday and Sunday.

>> No.9115847

>>9115843
scratch that, I see quite a few hotel listings that are doable. Whether they'll be there in 2 weeks when I have money is the question.

>> No.9116051

Staying at the Hilton from Wednesday; close friend is a volunteer. Using some inheritance money to properly enjoy myself this year (medication I was on last year meant I ended up asleep a lot)

>> No.9116212

>>9115847
There's a group on facebook for dragon con rooms. Check it out. Usually lots of people looking to fill rooms or get rid of a room they no longer need at a discount.

>> No.9116469

I'm not going this year, but have been interested in it for a while now, whats the word on ticket prices? I see the 4 day pass is $130 now but do they start out cheaper if you order well in advance?

About how far out from the con would i need to look at reserving a hotel?

>> No.9116520

>>9116469

Yeah they're much cheaper in the fall.

Hotels: a couple of the hotels will start booking for 2017 either this month or in August. These will be gone before the convention starts.

A couple of the hotels have gone to a legacy system where they offer first dibs to people checking in at this year's con. These are impossible unless a friend is getting rid of theirs.

The Marriott plays hotel room Hunger Games, usually in October. Rooms are available for about five minutes.

There's also overflows but you don't get dcon tv which is one of the best parts of the con (don't miss panels while getting into costume)

>> No.9116530

>>9115831
On site hotel rooms are long gone, try AirBNB in the area, you could luck out. We are driving in from Marietta and park in the parking deck, it's $40 for all day it's worth the price through.

>>9116469
The cheapest pricing would be right after the end of last Dragon Con (we picked up ours for $90 IIRC) $130 isn't that bad to be honest, $32.50 for a whole day event (well Monday is like a 1/2 day/recovering day)

If you are not dressing up 5~10 min walk away should be fine, if you are dressing up closer the better to be honest.

I'll be heading out there if I can manage to get liberty.

I don't have time to make any new elaborate cosplays because I'm all kinds of busy with schooling, but I might be able to whip up something simple.

If not, I may just reuse stuff from previous cons. I had a pretty decent SU gettup at last year's D*Con.

>> No.9120947

How great is Dragon Con? I used to love cons but was honestly pretty bored at the last con I went to. But the programming was more centered around stuff I was as interested in (Marvel/DC) and there isn't a big cosplay scene, so I was thinking DC might still be fun for me. I'm thinking about booking a last minute trip to Dragon con since there are hotel rooms available and airfare is cheap, but I've felt wishy washy about it.

>> No.9120953

>>9120947
Best con you'll ever go to in your life likely.

>> No.9120991

>>9120947
I like D*C because there's an incredible amount of options. Just want to people watch be the dolphin statues? Feel free. Want to spend the entire time posing and getting pictures? Easy, just please don't block the skywalk. Feel like spending all day talking about costuming? About comics? About Dr. Who? Choose any of them or all of them, programming all day (and night usually). Don't feel like sleeping? Boom- Aquarium night, live music, drum circles, room parties, and movies/anime the whole while. Lots of dosh to burn? Amazing dealer area and HUUUGE artist alley and art section. Auctions and charity sales the entire while. Or, patronage! Lots of bands trying to get their names out, budding sci fi and fantasy authors looking for their core superfans to get them off the ground. Want spectacles? March in the parade and be the toast of Atlanta. Hit up the cosplay contest and show your skills. Need a break from the con? That Aquarium is awesome during the day too, Coca Cola headquarters is literally right next door, and the Georgia Tech campus is nearby. Come back for the video or board gaming, the tin-foil types talking about spooks or spies, or the Klingon beauty pageant.

In short, there is a ton of stuff to do at any time. Truly a magical place.

>> No.9121001

That does sound like the kind of con that's more up my alley these days. Plus I'm kind of looking for an excuse to finish some historical costumes I've been working on and Dragon con seems like the kind of event where that would fit in. I think I have 1-2 days to decide before the last hotel block closes, but I think I may just book it.

>> No.9121030

Right now I'm midway through a pair of regency outfits (my dress and spencer are done, need a bonnet, husband's many layers of clothing are in progress). I prefer Georgian to Regency for women's clothing, but for some weird reason my husband has been asking me to make him a regency outfit for awhile and I do like Jane Austen, so I figured why not. If I end up going and have the time, I may make an addition outfit for myself from a different era.

It's the biggest con in the south east, crowd are generally older and they pour a lot of money and work into their costumes since it's pretty much the only con they'd attend. Few first timers who went to other cons always comment on how overall the level of costumes are way nicer.

There are so many thing to do, last year my wife and I focused more on going to panels and it was eye opening on some of the stuff, especially the one about copyright and fair use law/rules.

You don't regret going for sure, this year we have a larger crew going (5) and we are going doing the driving into Dragon*Con thing again, we tried riding the MARTA... it's sucked big time. Don't ride MARTA unless you really really have to.

To me it is.

Also it's not that hard finding parking a shortish walk from the hotels. I just pay the premium and end up paying ~$20/day to park near the Mariott in the parking lot connected to Pacific Rim.

Not sure why it's never full, but I've parked there every year for the past 3 years without issue.

>> No.9121162

I don't don't why he won't do something like that. I'm parking AT the Marriott, so the $35 a day makes sense. I'd rather be lazy, since we'll be doing enough walking as it is. He likes saving money I guess, but I'd never park that far, especially with all the shit I bring.

>> No.9121166

Park at the cancer research building garage across the street from the Aloft. It's about a block away from the Marriott. You get a ticket when you get in saying it's ~$20 a day. My brother, his girlfriend and I are going to dragoncon and I was hoping you'd join in a prank that me and his girlfriend have been playing on my brother during otakon. He's gonna be cosplaying as the deer from adventure time on Sunday, but he get's really pissed off if you ask him about it. So, all throughout Saturday night at otakon, we would get strangers to ask him, "Hey, aren't you going to be the deer?" with hilarious results. It's a really stupid inside joke that makes no sense, but his reaction is just too good. I'm leaving his selfie here (which he cut me out of with that lightsaber filter, the bastard). He's going to be dressed as Jamie Lannister and Ron Stoppable during Friday and Saturday, so be on the lookout for that.

If you happen to see him, just ask him, "Hey, aren't you going to be the deer?" It'll totally mess with his head if a complete stranger from out of nowhere said that to him.

You'll see a LOT of costumes, it's free, it's fun, and maybe, just maybe you can sneak in your hotel of choice in the throng of people making their way back inside.

But you'll have to stay there though, you can't leave cause of security.

If you're good with girls tho, then anything is possible.

Just do something that is plainscloth but you can pull off pretty well for your face/shape.

Now that Dragoncon gives you the opportunity to stream Dragoncon TV, there's no need to get a host hotel anymore.

>> No.9160617

>>9160551
Not really - for those who bring out the big guns for cosplays, it's worlds more convenient to stay at a host.

I've been in an overflow, the Hilton, and most recently the Marriott, and I was genuinely surprised at how much less tiring it was to get back to the room, even just comparing the Marriott to the Hilton. This is probably no big deal for non-cosplayers, but staying in a host hotel and avoiding a huge walk in the heat is very worth it for me.

I've gone on and off for the last 11 years but these days I can usually just afford to go for the day. It's sad when you could afford a hotel within walking distance in high school and as an adult with an actual job it's totally out of the question.

Last year we got scammed parking near the Sheraton. The place said $20, but when we left it turned out to be $40. Anyone know where I can find day parking for under $20 around the con?

Yeah the 161 Peachtree Center Garage up their price from $20 to $40 so I went and got their monthly parking pass which is $115 for the month and $15 one time card activation fee. Got back a while ago. They ran us out and were closing down the Mariott to non guests. I had JUST found a dude dancing there that was a DJ and had a phone full of cool stuff, too.

Yeah, let's just all meet up at the lounge behind the Hilton lobby, I'll be waiting there for anyone who wants to hang out and meet fellow channers the last day here. Just look for a dude in a black polo, bandana and eyepatch. I'll buy everyone a drink.

So is it already too late to book at the host hotels for next year?

>> No.9174923

>>9174756
Westin was apparently booked when I tried about ten. I think it opened at nine.

Got in at the Sheraton, though.

No idea if the hotels need time to update or clear their books or whatever they do or are just completely booked the day after the convention a full year ahead of the next one. That's crazy if so.

>> No.9174950

>>9174923

hilton and hyatt did legacy bookings, so they wont open reservations for any remaining rooms until all of those are processed, and the mariott wont open bookings until around the start of october.

I'd call the sheraton but i hear they want names of guests and i'm not sure who all are going to be able to go this far in advance.
