One thing I hate is cosplayers posting WIPs to 'ask for concrit' but sperg out the second you give them any concrit. I can sugarcoat like nobody's business but if your satin skirt is glued together with mod podge and you specifically ask for help, you have to accept that people will tell you that you need to improve.

As for cons, I just really hate neckbeards who latch onto people and follow them around the whole time. You'd think they'd get the damn hint after being repeatedly asked to leave, but that just means you're tsundere and want it secretly~ and they keep on tailing you like a lost whale until Mummy comes to pick them up.
Maybe I'm just incredibly unlucky and nobody else really has that as a recurring problem, idk.

>mainly there for the dance party
Most con raves are shit, most room parties (the ones I've been to, at least) have a distinctly weeby vibe, and the whole point of the damn con is that it's about anime.
I just don't understand people like that either, you want to party so bad then go to a nightclub. You'll have better music and better drinks.

People being too loud or screaming
Blocking the path in the dealer room, ether for photos or with large costumes/props, both should be banned in dealer room. If dealers have a booth babe there for photos, she needs to be IN the booth, not moving out to the floor to block traffic flow.

My boyfriend's brother bought a huge Proton Cannon prop for an Iron Man costume, despite it only appearing in the MvC video games. Not only was it a bitch to carry around (it wasn't heavy but it was quite large), but it was also poorly made.

To make matters worse, a friend of ours was with us who went as Renji from Bleach but had a huge prop for Zabimaru's Bankai form which was even worse because one of us had to carry the snake-head while he remained close to make sure nothing snapped or broke.

See I feel stuff like this does work. In character interactions, such as calling a person by their name and asking them an in character question, makes for a remarkable ice breaker. The trick is picking up cues and knowing when to push the antics along or break character and be a normal person.

Most in-character cosplayers don't practice this

Meaning, elitism around how to enjoy a convention - people who very clearly think they're better than other weebs because they don't go to panels or only buy official merchandise from the dealers hall (instead of artist alley merch). People who think it makes them cool to not participate in certain aspects of conventions.

It's like, get off your high horse. We are all at a shitty weeb con. If I'm paying this much for travel, hotel, and tickets, I am going to enjoy everything I possibly can. How can you possibly be a hipster about something so entrenched in enthusiasm.

Waist training doesn't work if you have 20lbs of fat to even get to your waist. It looks bad on fat people, they look boxy and have their rolls of fat bulging at the top of the corset. Wear shapewear, unless the character you're cosplaying as wears a corset

>neck beards who latch on

I have this problem except I'm a vendor/artist at a table. Since the first con, and every con since I've had the same neck beard always lurk around my table and chat to me for like an hour. He's so oblivious he wont move away when other customers are interested. I cant even really call him a customer since in more than a dozen cons he's only bought one $2 pin from me. That was my first con and he stopped by my booth repeatedly to chat with me for long lengths of time. It was until the end of the day he finally bought something like holy hell.

Like if its not busy and we have a common interest and you arent a sperge lord, I dont mind at all talking to people. But jfc he doesn't understand that I'm there to make money and he's blocking off my business.

I told my con director i didnt want him at our guest dinner. Reason being that he cannot hold a conversation at all. He's so extraordinarily socially awkward. He also pulled alot of stupid shit before the con started and just did things w/o checking with the appropriate departments. He micromanaged certain staff and caused them to leave. He sent out a $3,000 shirt order to get printed, he combined the shirt image we made as well as our name on the shirt but forgot the logo, and never included the art chair in any of this. I spent 5 days going back and forth with the t-shirt company trying to fix the impending disaster. I fucking fixed it in the end but holy hell. He was pretty bummed about not being allowed to go to the dinner. He tried telling me it was tradition.

>wut
>he ends the meeting by saying he's resigning

I tried explaining the guest asked me to post the photo. In the photo no one had a staff shirt on, it was in an elevator, and the only person who had a drink in hand was the guest. The rest of us were all smiles. We had teamfourstar a few years ago premiere some of their newer content at the time at our con. Upon doing so, it was not a 18+ panel and there was swearing in the bit of the video they showed to the audience. There were children in the room. Heaven forbid two of my guests do that. The shame. Sorry to be so buttmad, i could just tell he was jealous. He kept cutting me off any time i tried to talk. He came over to talk to me after the meeting. I shut him down

I make big props with my dad and logistics regarding the prop are a top priority. How will this fit in your car? Can you handle it by yourself? What will you do if something breaks? I think having a big prop is fine as long as you think of how it effects those around you and work to minimize the negative effect. If I can't basically handle the costume myself (carrying it, movement, etc), I won't make it. Having help is awesome, but if push comes to shove, I want to know that I can get everything out of the way/put away in a timely fashion.

And if you have a huge prop or a costume you can't see really well out of, for crying out loud, HAVE A HANDLER!! Even if you can move around just fine or carry that giant axe, having a handler will help make sure that giant axe doesn't end up in someone's eye and make sure you don't trample that toddler that wandered into the blind zone at your feet.

Then she comments on my stuff that it turns out "so good" and it must be because I can afford expensive materials. We make the same amount of money and she has less financial responsibility than me. I don't even spend a lot of money on cosplays, I just put effort into them and don't make cheapskate shortcuts like replacing sewing with hot glue.

This doesn't really belong here but it's the closest related thread.
I just got back from a con and I was really disappointed with one of the panels I spent $20 to attend. The panel is supposed to teach novice cosplayers about common crafting materials, e.g. foam, worbla, gesso, bondo, etc. I have never used worbla and I thought it'd be a nice opportunity to see firsthand what you can do with it... I'd assumed it would be more hands-on but the guy ended up ranting about how much foam sucks for the majority of the time and then he spent the rest of the time playing with scraps of worbla. The finished pieces he passed around were really bad looking - misshapen, in desperate need of sanding, asymmetrical, etc. I would have been fine with this if we actually got to play with the materials too, but nope. Or on the flip side, I'd have been OK with just observing and listening if he actually produced quality results. Sorry for the rant, I'm just really cheesed that I had to pay for a shitty panel.

>> No.9134957

>>9134855
So sorry you got stuck with that. Worbla is highly overrated. Was it a local con? Because I've never heard of paying for a panel that isn't some big industry event or a workshop where you actually get to use materials yourself.

A lot of con organizers don't bother to actually check to see if the panelists actually know what they're talking about. They pretty much accept submissions based on description alone. So it's sad but common that a small con will have a room that's packed for a Props 101 panel and the guys just have okay at best wood props to show off.

It was at Gencon which is actually rather large, but I guess their cosplay scene is subpar. It was my first year in attendance; I guess paying for panels (they call them "events") is standard fare for the con, although average price is usually just $2-8 to participate in the event and paying more than that usually means you get to use the materials, too. For $20 I expected to at least get to take home some useable scrap. Instead I got a piece of EVA foam, craft foam, and worbla, all roughly the size of my thumb, pic related. So much regret.

If you are a girl you will never know what its like going to a make up store, staring at the 3000 pictures of women all over the walls and products while GETTING stared at by employees and customers like some kind of freak just because you are a guy who wants to wear makeup when going in front of people with the desire for them post your pictures all over the net and not look like shit in every one.
This despite EVERY man on tv and film wearing make up.
If you want more guys to wear make up maybe you should look at changing the way make up is marketed. It's very guy-unfriendly.

As a guy who has a VIB card, all I can say to you is to get over yourself. It's not that bad.

Nobody's going to assault you for looking at foundation, and once you find your shade you don't even need to go to the physical stores anymore because you can just order shit online. Hell you can probably even order testers online if you're that much of a baby. And if you can't handle stares/snippy remarks from a few strangers in your local beauty supply store, you have no business having your photos posted on the internet.

My absolute biggest pet peeve:

> Scroll through "my lineup for x con!!11!!" posts
> See someone post waifu-tier cosplays in their lineup (Madoka, Sailor Moon, Nui Harime, Love Live, etc)
> Go to their profile to see if I should get them to shoot with me
> Absolutely whale-like

EVERY SINGLE TIME.

And if they're not blubber, they're hyper SJW trash trans-trenders. I don't do those.

It's sad, but the only way to get a good cosplay of a moe character is to shoot a 90 lb 14 year old. The sad part is that they are always shy as shit, and won't give me the fan-service shot I NEED. The struggle.

THIS. It's just a basic rule of thumb but maybe don't touch someone that you don't know without their permission. Especially when they could be wearing something fragile. Continuing from this:
>people that can't seem to take 'no' for an answer
>people that stare at you for an uncomfortable amount of time but never say anything

I don't know if I just never noticed the staring thing before but, particularly at the last con I went to, I got a LOT of people (mostly dudes) blatantly staring at me for a looooong time. They would never approach me and it weirded me out. It got to the point that even my friend noticed and was freaked out by it. I'd honestly rather you just make whatever dumb comment you want to make instead of gaping at me like I'm on display.

Did a group cosplay with friends, was fun the first day we stayed together majority of the time. I tell them around 5 in the vendors area "Hey guys do your own thing have fun, I'm going to walk around etc. Etc." The group still follows me through out the day. They basically ignore me and keep following throughout con claiming theyre having so much fun. My only chance of escape was running off with another group. (Which i had a great time because they were actually fun and not dead boring.) Also had to share a room with them and also going to the con with them this year. And now 3 days before con Idk if they even have the hotel room they claimed they "reserved" And That we're gonna pay there.

I'm not doing this ever again next year I'll go by myself and pay for everything. They want to meet up and talk about the room Thursday. But why talk if everyone is in the phone group chat and when only 6 or 7 of us show out of the 11 people?

I went to a Fire Emblem panel this Friday and there was this guy in the audience who won't sit the fuck down because he wanted to ask his question so much. I don't even understand the thought process behind this. Isn't more people cosplaying the same thing as you a good thing? It means there's someone else who likes your thing who you could be friends with, and on a purely technical standpoint it means that you can help each other find the best techniques and materials.

I mean, not that you would want to be friends with or help this particular person because they're being an ass, but why even be an ass in the first place?

people who get upset when their sloppy, obscure and generic looking cosplay isnt recognized.

i used to go to cons with my ex. she wasn't quite at my level with cosplay (though i am not by any means incredible). anyway. she would cosplay really obscure characters from really long series. when she had these cosplays on, she would stop at every person in the artist alley selling stuff related to the series and stop in front of them and get so thirsty for people to recognize her cosplay. if they recognized her, she would ask them if they wanted a picture. if they didn't recognize her, she would get butthurt. and nothing made her more angry than when i cosplayed from the same series and got recognition and pics when she didn't.

im so glad i wont have to cringe like that anymore. looking forward to my next con.

While in the dealers hall, a girl dressed as Twilight Sparkle tried to get me to RP with her and her friend dressed up as Rarity. A few mins later, some 15 year old dude starts trying to get me to act in character (stuff like "Oh Fluttershy, are you afraid of dragons? What would you do if there was a dragon right behind you?"), and after I managed to get away, a friend pointed out that the dragon dude was following me around. So awkward.

A friend of mine decided to try to make a big elaborate costume for Otakon. In June. I told them they wouldn't have enough time but they swore they could do it because they would have help. This included asking me to make a large armor piece. I told them no, because I had my own stuff to do.

Because the anime aesthetic is over the top. Just like you don't go without make up for a character that doesn't wear it, you don't go without a wig for a character with natural hair. The exceptions are where your hair is done to match the character, and is a hard style to achieve with a wig (mohaws, buzzcut, etc). Just get a natural looking wig and style it to not be ridiculously thick or extravagant.

I think wigs tend to look better for anime costumes. I don't know why, even if it's natural styled hair, wigs tend to look better.
I think the only time natural hair looks better is when it's from live action media and the cosplayer is able to do their hair well to look like it. And sometimes wigs just never look right, like for Rey from Star Wars and Sansa from Game of Thrones when her hair is up, I've never seen a wig that looked good/natural and wasn't obviously a wig.
