Finishing up on the body suit now, this monstrosity is hanging up in my bathroom. It's basically a shit load of long wefts from Arda, mixed with dingy strips if gauze, mixed with long pile faux fur. I was able to get a pretty good texture to the long hair by spraying it all down with a watery glue mixture. Makes it much less likely to knot up into a big nasty mess, and sort of keeps the fibers stiff and clumped together the way they appear in game.

bumping
was considering making a black hand set, however i have a few hold ups.
The biggest issue being the hat. I've made a few articles of clothing in the past, but never a hat so i'm uncertain of what to do with that. I was considering forgoing it, but that make the outfit even harder to recognize since it isn't a very distinct set in the first place.

I was considering working around this by making an iconic dark souls shield to go with the set and also using make-up to give myself the appearance of a hollow. do you think that would do it or should I just try for the hat or just go for a more iconic set?

Bumping with progress on Amelia. This is one of the stilts (98%) completed, at least the underlying structure. It gives me about 12 inches in height, but more importantly gives me the digitigrade leg shape. What I'll do next is carve musculature and long gnarly toes out of upholstery foam, attach to the stilts, then skin the whole thing with faux leather cloth.

Metal-working is death, by the way. Fucking never again.

pfff when people say this they're always exaggerati- WHAT THE FUCK is with this picture? How did the photographer manage to get both the background and the floor by your feet blurry like that?

Did the photographer shoop the pic? For what purpose? When I focus on your hands you look like a shitty cgi saturday morning show from the 2000's with bad shading. Or was there a use of a greenscreen photo background and a really blurry picture (of a snack stand?) was put in the background?

>>9123930
>>9123931
Your costume is pretty nice-looking tho
personally I think that the tunic with the crest detracts from the costume because it's very obviously modern fabric/t-shirt looking. You seem to have put down dough/time for actual chainmail (props to you), so you should look to replace the tunic with more period-appropriate looking cloth, like rough linen or canvas or something. Rough cloth like that will probably look better when the edges are ripped and around the armpit seams. I don't know the availability or prices of that but I don't think canvas should be that expensive.

After the cloth, if you still wanna put work into it, the shinguard need a little love but they're fine.

the first one was edited by myself in photoshop with 7% gaussian blur, but its still a iphone6 photo.

it is rough linen
i've made no compromises for this armor everything is somewhat historically authentic and combat proof [except the sword]

you're right about the shinguards
I almost couldn't wear them because they are missing leather straps and I can't do any rolls with them. They need to a little smaller for more movement

>> No.9123963

>>9123952
Yeah they had linen, but I don't think they could get the threadcount so high back then. Anyhow, it's just the white tunic part around the armpits that I have issue with. I dunno. Just looks off.

I'd look into cold forging for the shinguards. They're a little too cylindrical. In other words, beat them with a hammer when fitted over a mannequin leg. Though that would be a really mcguyver way to do it and possibly make it worse instead of better. Do you have access to a metal workshop nearby? Maybe they can do it for you if you pay them.

Working now on the foam musculature of the legs. These will be the toes, I'll attach them at the toe pivot joint of the stilts.

Looks >> Practicality.
No one cares if your metal is "authentic", they care if your costume looks good, and it doesn't. Its not terrible, but your weakest parts are the "authentic" materials. The best solaire's use fabricated armor, not live steel. If you want to use live metal you better get it properly fitted by a blacksmith or learn to forge.

now if you could tell me what exactly puts you off I can make it better when I continue working on my so far only 80% finished armor.

!!!! I AM TALKING HERE OF A PERFECT COPY OF SOLAIRES INGAME HELMET !!!!

>What is seriously wrong with solaires helmet:
its way to high as in you can't look on the floor with out bending your whole body forward.
it restricts your movement that you can't lower your head because the bottom of the helmet will press on your solar plexus.
however you turn / tillt your head it will bump on your chest or shoulders

There are no holes in the mouth area
they are not vital but you can breathe a lot better and you can see better whats going on the ground without lowering your head like an idiot every time

one girl tried to shake my hand and offered her hand like 3 times until she hugged me. I didn't got it be cause it was exactly in my blindspot
kek

Side note:
Helmets like these were only worn on a horse when you are riding towards your enemy with a lance. This has nothing to do with tournament jousting! When you enter ground combat with footsoldiers you drop your helmet so it doesn't restrict you view. Under your helmet is either another much smaler helmet only for the top of your head the face is open or a chain hood.

Printed it out on normal printer paper, backed it with painter's tape for support, and cut it out.

When it comes to actual application, I just used Tulip Metallics gold fabric paint and one of those cheap square sponge brushes. It's not perfect, but it did well enough.

I've never intended to build this to win a contest I just wanted to do it right, but after putting so much work into it I just can't lose anymore.

He's better tho. Don't get so heated up on this anon. I even have a Solaire cosplay and it's not even amazing. I'm basically a meme as well. It's just the fact your costume doesn't look like it fits right and it's kinda tacky with the steel. It's not horrible but you're certainly no better than >>9132416 you faggot

Also please put something over the eye slits in your helmet. A dark see through fabric would make it look cooler. Idk why but seeing people's eyes through their Solaire helmets always ruins it for me.

Okay after enough whining and self-pity I decided I've simply invested too much into these stupid things at this point and will do whatever it takes to wear them at Otakon. I made some modifications and I do actually have a bit of balance now. I'll just have to camp next to a wall or something, and do minimal walking around. Definitely staying the hell out of crowded areas and the flow of traffic.

I hope everyone will enjoy seeing their favorite big, dumb, clumsy, blind, deaf, and gay werewolf.

Planning on cosplaying Micolash soon - I was going to use eva foam for the base of his Mensis cage and wooden dowels for the rest of the frame. I am wondering though if anyone has any better advice for it? Also am wondering if I should carve notches into the dowels to stabilize them or if that would ruin the visuals. Would love any help.

Look's good, else than the helmet. A bit too shiny, but ok.

>>9135838
Agree with >>9137133.
9132416 has straps on this arm while not having some make your arm look shit.
The tabard look worn out, and seem to be made of linen, when yours is brand new white with some part teared up.
His sword look like a sunlight sword, while yours... is clearly a plastic training simulator.
the leathers part looks well used, while yours look news.
the sun symbol, too.
He has the right helmet. you do not. Also, it don't look so shitty or unusuable, like what you said earlier here >>9127219 albeit because
on the real version there are holes.
The pauldrons are supposed to be worn to death textile, not... whatever things you used.

You seem reaaaly mad. Why ?

You think you are the only one playing with steel, too ? If you want to play the internet tought knight, Go rather shitpost on the /asp/ hema thread. But that will give you no credit here.

Thanks, I think.
The shininess will subside as it tarnishes/rusts.
There's still more to do before it's actually done, but I never thought of the helmet as the weakest link. Aside from it being too large, what would you say is holding it back?
This was my first metal armor project, and I'm thinking of making another helmet now that I've got a better idea of how the metal moves. I've got some ideas for improvement, but I'd welcome any suggestions at this stage.

>>9158132
Thanks. It's 18 Ga. sheet steel dished into two symmetrical halves and fluted, which I welded together. Since cardboard doesn't stretch or shrink like metal, I couldn't do a dry run like most of the other armor pieces which made it really difficult to size the templates. The bevor, grill, and visor are all also 18 Ga sheet steel hammered over a shot put, and pipe. After they were all shaped, I gave the edges a decorative roll to finish them off. They're riveted at the pivot, and there's a latch that holds the bevor closed.

Well the shiny isn't very dark souls, and it's very aluminium like. So if you can help it tarnish I would recommend it.
Only being too large. when I see the helm ingame, i see a stylized armet.
Something like pict related.
your one has a too big visor, compared to the helm, with a opening way too big.

It would maybe not be so noticeable if the head wasn't so visible behind.
Maybe with some gauze...
did you remove the horizontal plate of the visor on purpose, btw ?
also, I shoudn't be able to see your neck.

the scarf thingy, I don't know what textile it is made from, but it dont look like the one on http://orig07.deviantart.net/cf81/f/2014/076/5/3/dark_souls_elite_knight_blender_cycles_comparison__by_kenshiro549-d7ajtsf.png , and should be a bit more falling appart.
But here it's nitpicking. the cosplay is great, especialy the tabard.

Tarnishing it is possible, but the luster is my lowest priority to change.

All of these are actually directly related to the helmet being too large. The size of the eye slit is limited by how close to the face it is. I found myself constantly adjusting from having an acceptable visual field to making the slit look good for pictures. I'm certain that I was not consistent in my adjustments.

The horizontal plate is actually there. It's just exactly not visible in either of those pictures. I definitely cut too much clearance out of the center though. For rev 2, I plan to will extend it further in.

I was relying on the scarf thing to cover my neck, which works for a very short time or until I start walking - whichever comes first. True it doesn't look like the picture you linked, but that picture is of someone's render, which also doesn't really look like the one in game. I think I have a fairly good idea of what needs to be done with this. The edges should be more tattered, but more importantly, I need to add another hook closer in to keep it tighter to and centered around my neck as opposed to having it hang forward like this.

I do appreciate the nits. Like I said, I don't consider this finished yet.

>Nice. how did you reconize him ?
I didn't. A friend linked me to the picture, and I was amazed to find it was on OnlyAfro's page. He apparently followed me around the game room until he could request a "Well what is it?"

Might as well drop my Solaire here too.
