This thread is for ouji and aristocrat (aka "boystyle") discussion. Boystyle refers to the masculine counterparts of lolita and aristocrat fashions. There is a lot of overlap between these styles, and different people use different terms to describe them. So, consider this a thread for those whose style is on the right half of Buttcape's Lolita Family Triangle: http://www.kawacura.com/moripress/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/0dmmLH6-350x350.jpg

your shirt and vest look good, but those shorts are too short imo. also, the plaid x stripes can work for punk, but your coord is a bit too simple for it to work here; additionally, the saturated OTKs look unbalanced with the less bright vest.

i would recommend looking into different legwear first. even solid black for now.

pic related is a punkish ouji coord that balances out contrasting patterns (stripes and dots) by matching them in terms of brightness, and having solid-color pieces to take some of the focus off so the clashing patterns are more trim than central. it also has the shorter shorts, but their poofiness sort of makes up for the length imo.

>> No.9117685

>>9117662
also check out >>9102987 for inspo. the clashing patterns have similar saturation levels (bright, bold colors) and the layers help balance the busyness with depth.

>> No.9122445

Well the blouse on the left is supposed to be black. So black is in the print. The other is wine to match the wine jsk, however I do agree that blouse in particular doesn't fit. I'll try to find something less saturated to match the print. The socks are from the same series to help pull in the wine color. The colors are meant to contrast with each other in a symmetrical way, but any suggestions on how to execute it better would be greatly appreciated!

I started off wearing Lolita for two years. Personally, I feel prettier in the dresses but I'm much more masculine and comfortable in Ouji.
I didn't actually start wearing it until I got several pieces together. The problem is finding good pieces that aren't coats. It's miserable here, temperature-wise almost year round.

I still wear both styles but I find myself focusing more on acquiring vests and the like versus jsks.

I started with lolita a few years ago, recently had a gender-related quarter-life crisis (?) decided to stop being so feminine and try to sort myself out, ouji lets me still have muh jfash but it fits my aethetics better. It's meant to be "boystyle" so I won't be harassed for not looking super feminine, but it's still somewhat feminine so the fact that I don't have a masculine face won't be a detriment either.

okay, black for that blouse makes a lot more sense. i think a more neutral color fot both blouses, or at least the lolita's, would work better, and you can bring the colors of each one's main piece in via accessories (like the flowers on the ouji's jabot).

there are also shared colors in the print, like the moons, that you could play with.

Been looking for some breeches in that color with beige/gold/whatever that is trim for a long time. The closest I got was some shorts from IW. Putting a jacket over that part solves any problems with the corset, and with some creativity it'll be fine with just a blouse too. first, never say "kodona" again. this is a forum for Japanese fashion, not shit Westerners made up.

second, it is fairly plain, and ouji tends not to use such prominent zippers. even decorative buttons to cover the zipper could work, if taking the zipper out is more work than it is worth. something to make it less visible.

eh, same principle. another possibility, if you feel like going ham on this project, is to remove the zipper as well as a portion of the coat surrounding the zipper, so the sides of the coat will not meet. then attach a false vest front that buttons normally. a lot of ouji coats do this, and having the front mostly open lets you show off the details of the coord inside (and helps make the garment more suitable to wear indoors)

also consider using a contrasting fabric for trim. this jacket would be pretty meh without its tartan. the added color can actually open up coording possibilities the way a plain black coat cannot. since a lot of EGL fashion involves balancing colors, a coat that is just one huge block of a single color is actually fairly limiting.

even simple trim like in >>9163689 can help break up the black and widen the range of potential coords.

generally, brands do not carry larger sizes, and custom options for indie brands are not always scaled to flatter a larger figure. i think very large ouji and aristocrat can look good: consider Henry the 8th, the plus-size king with a pretty decent wardrobe, or other portly dandies and royals throughout history. but because weight and size are taboo topics, people often do not know how to dress for their size. and since the icons of boystyle are usually slim cute or androgynous Asians, people do not easily imagine coords that would look better on someone who does not have that bodytype.

My main suggestion is if you have a rounder face to practice using make up to give yourself a more masculine look. I love baby face but it looks odd in ouji.
Other tips:
-if OTKs don't go over your knee use tights instead
-make sure patterned leg wear doesn't look too warped
-pay attention to sleeve circumference on short sleeved blouses
-avoid shorts that go more than a few inches above the knee
-bulky shoes can help balance out your silloette
-try to look confident even if you don't feel it

it depends on the coord (and legs). i prefer nothing above mid-thigh, but that is personal preference as brands keep making shorter shorts. but if they are short, they need to have a shape. form-fitting short shorts are not ouji, imo.

this looks bad and cheap and costumey, because the shortness combines with the lack of material and the harlequin pattern to look like part of a Sexy Clown Halloween store costume: >>9102978

additionally, the huge expanse of bare legs, combined with the sock garters and garter-like cuff of the shorts with skin peeking through, is unbalanced and overly sexualized. for shorts of that length, tights or OTKs look better. a long gilet could also offset the flimsiness of those shorts.

for this coord >>9109416, i do not l
personally like the length but the shorts are much more balanced with the coord. you can nitpick the solidness of the tights but given this seems to have been worn while travelling, it looks pretty comfortable and put-together. the shorts have sturdy and ample material, and the way they are layered with the blouse and vest helps form a nicr silhouette (the best flares out and over the puffiness of the shorts).

you can also check the replies to >>9117637 for more thoughts about shorts length.

I don't think so since it laces up somewhat in the back, you can tighten it more on top if it's gaping. I'm flat as a board and the underbust pieces I own look fine for the most part. Sometimes you do have to tighten the top a little more because of gaping in the shoulder area, at least for me.

The mannequin on Sheglit's store is pretty small chested and these cuts look kinda bad on moderate/larger chested girls in general (too much emphases and often chests are too big to fit over them).

The Moitie blouse here comes in red too but I seen to have lost the picture I had of it.

Green is very rare for a blouse that isn't actually blue in color. These two blouses from Meta and VM is a nice shade. I own the dress that goes with the VM blouse and it's a gorgeous moss color.

Any brand has red blouses in general just not all would look great with ouji. And AaTP also has red blouses designed for ouji.

here is a list.

1. makeup and hair/wig styling tips, especially for men. male style videos on YT don't really go for the ouji aesthetic. (using a friend's face is fine.)

2. reviews of purchases. more than unboxing, a critical overview of the item. it is rare that ouji pieces are seen outside of brand ads or coord shots.

3. "lifestyle" topics. do you have an interest or hobby that is ouji- or your general aeathetic-related? talk or demonstrate it in ouji.

4. tag videos/challenges. it may feel lame but i find a lot of vloggers by looking for things like "Lolita tries Beanboozled" or whatever silly tag is meme-trending. ("Shit oujis say" NEEDS to get made.) Prince Mar's ouji tag could be a good place to start, i was kind of sad no one picked it up.

5. event coverage. comm meetups (if members consent to being filmed), interviews with comm members about their coords, comparisons with other oujis attending where possible. conventions, fashion shows, fashion walks, travel vlogs.

6. making obvious sponsorships obvious. we know when brands have been shopping a product around to different YouTubers and it is insulting when the vlogger pretends the video is not a sponsored review. you can make a fun video without trying to trick us about why it's being made.

7. skits! if you feel like risking views on your ability to write, direct, and/or act. the Ouji Accessory skit has had a pretty big impact on the ouji scene, and its basic script just pokes gentle fun at what it is like being ouji in a lolita world. if original content isn't your forte, try ouji parodies. Deerstalker (again) hit gold with many of their lolita parodies, and that beautiful lolita Kingsman parody was pretty epic.

8. transformations and style swaps. you, your partner, your friend, whoever. make your boss into a prince, or let a lolita doll you up. try for an authentic Mana-inspired EGA look.

9. trust your gut and follow your heart and take any critique with a pinch of salt.

Isn't that the ideal? Most burandos cater to average Japanese measurements, given that Japanese males have an average height of 170cm and the population is generally not fat, that sounds pretty close to your description, so you should be able to fit in a fair number of things. It's on you to style yourself to look good after that, but at least you have a leg up on those who can't find clothes to fit into.

As a 5'9ft woman, it's a good height, just watch out for sizing as it can get weird. Some blouses and jackets will hit you on your ribcage so be prepared to use that as you waist measurement when buying things. I have almost never not had something hit lower ribcage because of my height, except some mens sized items. I mainly buy in lady's sizes still though as men's tend to be too large on me in shoulder width and bust, but a man may not have those issues even if you weigh around the same.

Sleeve length and pant cuff size is also worth watching out for as some pants will sit higher on your legs and therefore on a larger part of the thigh. If sleeves are slightly too short, wrist cuffs work to fix that.

No advice for the measurements, but the rest:

It's easier to buy that stuff in Japan, lolita's more popular in China but Japan had the vkei and goth scene going pretty strongly for at least decades, which means there's brands (and therefore secondhand clothes) that catered to goth and vkei dudes, China mostly has "gothic cosplay" and ouji being designed as an afterthought to lolita.

With that in mind, I'd say be wary of taobao ouji, especially if the model photos are on a girl and not a guy -- they're generally designed for the same clientele as the girls who wear lolita dresses, so they're definitely going to be short because they're designed for 160cm girls, not 173cm dudes/tall girls.

To avoid the butler cosplay look, choose clothes that are less frilly, aim more for polished pieces that look expensive rather than have cute prints or have a lot of lace on them. Draw your examples from the romantic goth (male) look, actual historical men's fashion, or go outright into vkei. There's a reason sweet ouji with matching lolita prints hasn't quite taken off, it seems difficult to put the same frills in pink on ouji and not have it end up looking a bit like Kuroshitsuji cosplay.

The border between nouji and ouji? I don't think there's an answer. cgl nitpicks every lolita they come across for very petty reasons anyway, I don't think you can come out with an outfit that wins over every single person. So just put together an outfit that you feel good in, and enjoy yourself.

>> No.9197619

37cm does sound short, I'd stick with pants closer to knee length. For blouses in taobao, most of the ones I have are L size and they are short in the torso length and one is short sleeve-wise. I usually tuck them in so it's not too bad. Shoulder measurements are where things might mess you up. I lucked out with 32cm shoulders despite being 175cm.

>>9197619
I don't know honestly, thats why I like Atelier Boz and MMM for their ladys sizes, they tend to fit me much better than AaTP's stuff. 93cm+ bust on a woman makes me think they're designing them for short, mega stacked women.

I suppose I was hoping for.. basically the same size, with more masculine clothing. My main issue is my shoulders are 46cm and chest is 34. Women's sizes usually have small shoulders and extra room in the chest, and mens at least fit my shoulders but are baggy everywhere else. I'm looking at like casual shirts and sweaters, not the sort of thing I'd get tailored. Blouses for ouji will always be too small and I've sort of accepted the discomfort that comes with that - I only buy secondhand and the idea of paying full price for some custom offbrand stuff is miserable to me.

>>9197984
You might have to pay full price for custom offbrand stuff, god forbid. Just blouses in particular. I'm 170cm and the sleeves come up a bit short sometimes, but that's mainly a shoulder problem I think. Your best bet if you must wear aatp is to go for vests, the lack of shoulders on them will mean one less thing to worry about, and a fair number them have corset lacing.

>> No.9198190

>>9198093
Friend, are you sure you're measuring your shoulder-width right? That seems like a big difference, even for a dude. Shoulder measurements are traditionally between the joints, not edge-to-edge. (If you are, sorry about your CLAMP shoulders)

For bigger blouses, Little Dipper has some ouji-suitable stuff and their size-range goes up pretty high - 40cm shoulder/110cm bust. My curse is pants - I have the dubious fortune of being tall (174cm), broad-shouldered (40cm), and curvy, and trying to find pants to fit 114cm hips is a quest I have not yet succeeded in. Not opposed to paying for custom-sizing, but so far Ichigo15 is the only place that does custom-sizing and has design aesthetics that appeal to me. I can sew quite well but ugggh I hate making pants. I had actually intended to go solidly for ouji when I started out last year, but the sizing flexibility in a lot of brand JSKs meant I've been only doing that so far.

I have a lot of issues with shorts since the crotches tend too be too high, and the boz pants I have are skin tight around the ass and get baggier as they go down my legs, it is very unfortunate. I've had good experiences with Ozz On thus far.

AatP flip-flops between 'I love it take my money' and 'oh god set it on fire' for me - the home decor trim stuff is generally the latter.

People looking for plainer shirts might have luck with some of the Western goth brands - it requires a certain amount of flipping past awful satin and peasant shirts, but there's some good pieces and the sizing is more generous

Hey there anons. Looking for some advice. I'm putting together my first ouji coord for a Halloween meet and I'm a bit stuck. I've got the basics but... Its so boring. I need headwear, neckwear, some kind of accessories, but I don't really know where to go now.

Opinions?

My apologies for the mess, in the middle of moving and everything is hectic. Also potato quality phone camera.

Initially I had wanted to do a witch themed ouji coord, but I'm lending my nice hat to my friend who is also attending (it matches her outfit perfectly, i couldn't say no) so I've got to come up with something else.

i see sharp, bat-like cuts and a gothic base. (not all b&w coords are clearly goth, but yours does seem to be so far.) first, check out >>9189930 for some unique ideas. what are you interested in? what is your usual style? what do you admire? it is hard to suggest specifics not knowing you, your tastes, your face, your hair options.

you can play up the silhouette--the batty-looking tails of your shirt, the swoop of your waistcoat collar--with other items that recall swooping, flight, arches, and hanging. chain jewelry, such as pins connected by a decorative chain, can brighten the waistcoat. a jabot or cravat would make good neckwear, rather than a bow tie--something that hangs and can fill the space between yoir suirt collar and waistcoat, with a brooch in the center of it. charm bracelets and rings can help your hands seem less plain, or lean toward the punky side with black fingerless gloves or wristlets.

your tights are meh, they seem to be fighting with your shorts for dominance over your legs. OTKs with a pattern suitable to your theme (avoid horizontal stripes) would go a long way.

look up Miho Matsuda and BPN ouji coords, they seem right in your aesthetic.

will dump a couple "black vest and shorts with white shirt" coords

Yeah, a range of long vests in solid colors or stripes, with matching breeches, and a lot of tricorn hats and jabots. It was a simple selection but everything felt well-made and durable. I got a $36 jabot that I am pleased with. If they open an online shop I will get a pair of their pants.

Also, their vets fit over skirts so if you wear lolita they're versatile.

I'd say it depends on how you look and what suits you to be honest. But a safe bet is something leaning towards aristocrat. I think it's easier for guys, especially newbies, to pull off and is probably going to be generally more flattering to wear.

My personal favourite is more aristo-leaning ouji inspired by the clothing of the European aristocracy in the very late 1600s to about 1780 or so.
