9052944 No.9052944 [Reply] [Original]

Due to some unusual circumstances, I'm currently living in a partially-renovated house with my dad and his fiancé.

His fiancé is a very sweet lady who is very thrifty. She makes all her own clothes and and will usually find a practical use for something, rather than throw it out (i.e recycling old bottles and jars to pot plants).

I had a Baby The Stars Shine Bright Strawberry and Cherry Ruffle jumperskirt that I didn't wear anymore, so I was planning to sell it. From memory, it cost about $400.

I put it out in the main room next to a pile of clothes I planned to donate to Good Sammies, so I'd remember to take photos of it for the sale. I then went away for a week to visit my grandparents

When I came back, I noticed the pile of clothes had disappeared. Cool, my dad and/or his fiancé had donated them for me. But wait... Where was the jumperskirt?

It was then that I saw the sight portrayed in the uploaded. My dress had been cut up to to make an ironing board cover and a tablecloth. I don't know where the rest of the material is.

It appeared that my dad's fiancé had assumed the jumperskirt was part of the donation pile, and thought there was no harm in 'recycling' it for her own uses. In her efforts to pretty up the concrete-y wasteland of a house, she had unknowingly destroyed an expensive brand dress.

Literally the only thing I could do in that moment was stare blankly. I can't even be mad at her, she had no idea.

So now I have a BTSSB ironing board and table cloth.

Well obviously there was at least a little communication about the clothing in that area going to the goodwill. Or else why would they even think that at all? That's not a conclusion that people just jump to, so OP must have said SOMETHING about donating the clothes that she placed in that area. If she put her dress right next to the pile, sure she didn't give permission to her dad's fiance to touch it, but she sure gave the impression that she didn't want the clothes that were there. At least not without having to stitch parts together to get a continuous piece. All these pictures OP has posted looks like it's all one continuous piece of fabric as if it was just taken off a bolt and made into something new. I know you can get enough fabric from a skirt to make a pillow case. I have done that once with a very damaged skirt off of lace market once. But a table runner AND and ironing board cover with one dress? I must say that's a feat in itself.

Holy hell, what a bitch.
Lolita dresses look very expensive and detailed. Even if she thought it MIGHT get donated, how would you get the idea to cut up a perfectly cute dress??
I mean, unless it had dirt stains all over it, why not donate a really pretty dress?? Cutting something up is reserved for clothing that is beyond help.

And if I were to see a pretty dress in a donation pile, and wasn't 200% sure it's supposed to be donated I wouldn't touch it. It's not like it would've hurt the stupid mom to lay it aside and reassure it's purpose later.

Anon, did you never talk about your lolita clothing to your family? Mine knows next to nothing about lolita, but sure as hell do they know how expensive and important my dresses are.

Thrifty moms are the worst, I always hear stories about them destroying things that were never meant to be recycled. And just look at that embarrassing rubbish flower pot.

lolno. The print is from 2010/2011, in that era the dresses were mostly mid-weight 100% cotton twill. You actually *have* to iron the dress on pretty high heat just to get the wrinkles out. Trust me, it's plenty durable for high heat.

AP was annoying in those days, the cotton twill requires high heat tthat would melt the tulle lace, so you had to be super extra careful when ironing AP -- high heat for the cotton twill without touching any of the tulle lace. The polyester stuff that burando favours these days really only got popular the last couple of years or so.

So? You can cut up a dress, especially a dress destined you think is destined for the trash. You're acting as though brand is made out of some blessed fabric and has some kind of holy light that normalfags can see.

>> No.9054030

>>9054024
No I'm acting like a well mannered human who can clearly see that most people posting here don't know what ownership means.

It seriously doesn't matter that it was being donated, if that really is the case (I'm pretty skeptical of threads on 4chan), it was still hers and she didn't get a choice in what happened to her belonging.

>> No.9054037

>>9054030
From my point of view, if you see something in the trash pile, it doesn't have an owner anymore. Anon is partially at fault for putting it near the trash pile. A well mannered human would be able to see that both parties made innocent mistakes, and that everything else considered, this incident is not worth crying over too much. Obviously OP thinks that the fiancee is a nice lady and that there was no malicious intentions, therefore there is no reason to take her to court. At most, she should have a talk with the fiancee about lolita and its secondhand value as a non cut-up dress.

>> No.9054053

>>9054037
I agree with most of what you said and what other people in the thread said about miscommunication. Both sides failed on that part.
But it wasn't a trash pile - it was a donation pile. Therefor it's not really up for grabs until it reaches a goodwill or whatever. Also we don't even know what happened to the other clothes? Did they even get donated or did little miss fiance hoard them for crafting somewhere?

Crafty people often turn out to be disgusting hoarders in my experience. They take things they find and "save" it for a project.

Anyway, it's annoying the amount of people there are that think it's just fine to take something that isn't yours, because it was just laying there so it's up for grabs and then just do whatever you want with it.

Is everyone here a fucking scavenger that collects shit they find laying around and then tout themselves as being mature?

Not to mention the amount of people who just bought this shit hook, line and sinker. I take it you guys started browsing this board first and you're not aware that this entire site is full of lies? Do you believe everything you read on the interwebs?

Trash probably wasn't the right word, maybe a 'things that are no longer needed' pile. And at that point, I don't see a difference in giving them to a family member or giving them to a charity organization. It's best to ask before using the discarded items, but when there is no one there and the person owning the items is okay with you donating the items while they're away (meaning they expressly told you 'I don't need these items anymore, please give them away' at some point), then I don't see a logical failing in taking a few pieces for your own purposes.

I think the point other anons are saying is that the clothes werent hers anyway. To pick something up and use it thats not yours and not even so much as ask the person who owns the stuff is quite rude. Being family doesnt excuse rudeness or the use of another persons stuff without permission. Yes anon should have been more careful, but anon would/should only have to cover her bases because people, usually friends or family, use stuff without that persons permission. I think its not someones duty to hold peoples hands so they dont do something impulsive. This could have been avoided if the woman had just asked a simple question or two. Anon really shouldnt have had to cover her bases if the woman was more aware of boundaries instead of doing a simple quite selfish action.
Me personally id be pissed and demand a reasonable price from the woman to teach her its not ok and just because it happens to family doesnt mean you let it slide but ive also had to fight and earn everything i had and my mom would also try and give away what i had (weather i bought it myself with my own money i got at a job or not) to other kids in the neighborhood to gain favor in her social group of moms of those kids so im pretty biased. Im salty about that last part but overall i think anon is a better well balanced person than i am and im sorry this happened to her. At least she has a kawaiironingboard now.

Not that anon but to a lot of the general public, Lolita dresses (especially when not worn properly with pettis etc.) look unfashionable and out of style at best, often even frumpy. It's really not that weird that anon's dadcée saw a dress grouped in with stuff up for donation, recognized that it was made of a nice fabric, but was hardly the epitome of fashion, and thought that she could make better use of it than it hanging at goodwill. Again, it's a kawaii-ass ironing board.

Doesn't mean it's entirely anons fault, looking at what anon has said I think it's fair to assume that she's not a daily lolita/jfasher, so dadcée should probably have noticed that it was a dress out of the ordinary and double checked before actually cutting it up. Hell, even if she hadn't planned on selling it there might be shit like, say, the piece of clothing being really heavily attached to hurtful memories and just wanting it out and away. You'd probably have to be pretty touchy to be bothered about that getting turned into an ironing board, but that still happens.

But the ones of you getting up and arms about it are really making me laugh. When you sell an item, how are you 100% sure that the "integrity" if the dress will remain the same? Update!

I queried the whereabouts of the remaining material and she showed me. She said my dad told her I was "throwing them out" (I have no idea where he drew that conclusion as i specifically said I was donating a bunch of clothes, so at the very least he should have assumed I was, you know, donating them), so she thought it was fine to cut up.

My fault anyway, didn't separate the "sell" pile from the "donate" pile.

HOWEVER...

There were a few other brand dresses I was planning to sell. I assumed they had been donated with the rest of my clothes, as they were nowhere to be found. I was a little sad about that (they were valuable Angelic Pretty, BBSTB and Metamorphose), but oh well.

Then I looked in her material bag and found they had also been cut up... When dad said I was "throwing THEM" out, he did not state a plural by accident... Pics to follow.

Tell her firmly that she should ask before going through your stuff in the future whether it be for selling or donating. No. There's nothing wrong with being upset over a loss, it's natural. I'd be upset if somebody cut up 4 of my Normie dresses, let alone Lolita.

I don't think they are. OP isn't the one crying over it though, the other people in the thread are. I would say the salty ones are the ones who want to take the fiancee to court, as though dresses are worth more than interpersonal relationships. At the end of the day, it wasn't irreplaceable or sentimental stuff so while it sucks, I don't see the point in being vindictive about it.

Gracefully accepting responsiblity for being party at fault for situation while gently telling the fiancee is having a good head on your shoulders. But it's just that. Money. To some people they are not motivated by money like half of this thread. OP probably sees it as a loss that really doesn't impact their personal expenses. OP probably bought the dresses without thinking about selling them later and recovering the money they spent. They bought them thinking they would love them forever and wore them. The love disappeared and the attachment went away. That's why people normally sell their Lolita. Not to make a profit or to recover what they spent. They sell them because they no longer love it any more. If someone buys it and cuts it up for throw pillows is that persons business. And in this case OP seems to see it that they got a new love by anther person. You can sit there going " I could have gotten so much if I sold this" but OP is humble and sees what joy it brought her fathers fiancé. It's kinda nice really. And a funny story to talk about.

For the people who want kawaii fabric to make kawaii home goods from, don't go the replica route.

You can search for "cute japanese fabric" or pikobeagle on etsy. There's literally yards and yards of really cute stuff, unicorns, cats, wrapping boxes, Alice prints, macarons, etc etc. As a bonus, it comes uncut, no clumsy ripping to take it apart.

Those who want to make curtains from Oo Jia replica fabric should go look for the girl who made Vampire Requiem curtains. It didn't look all that great, the scale was off and the fabric looked terrible.

Hey newfriend, just fyi, these dresses aren't a cosplay at all. They're lolita dresses, which is a fashion style. Although there's cosplay and lolita threads on this board, they aren't the same. They kinda got lumped together due to lolita coming to western attention via anime conventions.

These dresses are worth so much because of their designers and brand. Just in the same way you might look at a plain black Prada dress and think "That's worth $400?", it's all about the brand name with the more expensive ones. Brands also command a better price because they're made of better materials, which is why their final resting place as common household items is pretty egregious.

For the anon(s) who wanted to make curtains, though. I really don't suggest doing that at all. The scale always looks off, pic related. There's also a Sugary Carnival bedsheet in the archives you can look at. I can't find the Vampire Requiem curtains that look like shit though, might be too old.

A little mad? Thats it? I'd be pissed as fuck if someone unknowingly let me destroy hundreds of dollars worth of something. Also super fucking embarrassed and guilty

Why would she purposely cut out the tag? Have you never cut up old clothes before? You just take what you need, usually.

This is like saying you enjoy reality TV even though you know it's not real.

If I didn't know what lolita was, yeah, I'd take the tag out. Why would you want your crafts to have tags from brands you don't know?
It doesn't add up.

I actually really want to do this and asked in a thread before about where to get the fabric and other anons bitched me out for it... I just want to have a Melty Chocolate guest bedroom.

My grandma does repurposing a lot and has saved tags that are particularly pretty to use on collage-type projects, and she picked up the habit from a craft magazine so I'd say its something that others do too. She makes these 'crazy quilt' things that are basically appliqued scraps of fabric and ribbon and whatnot with them. I could definitely see someone thinking that a lolita brand tag with the cute names like Baby and Angelic Pretty would be useful for such a project.

I think the most interesting thing about this is that OP is not interested at all in the anons who have offered to buy fabric/lace from her. I know I would be jumping on anyone still willing to give me money for any of these massacred items..

Even if you don't morally give two shits replica fabric is really shitty most of the time. Love yourself. Buy fabric that is at least quilting cotton quality.

That's sad but at the same time really sweet of her, it's kind of like how people make quilts or pillows as mementos.
