Honestly, sounds like people are making shit up about the hotel rooms to dissuade people from having parties. Cops will likely not be called for a room party, they won't arrest people for partying, and obviously nobody was shot.

I don't think I'm going to come to the con today.

Sorry for the long post but I've been having these thoughts all weekend.

I haven't made any friends since I graduated college and went into the adult corporate world (four years ago). It isn't a big deal - I'm always able to enjoy my free time on the weekends. But Fanime is a reminder that people with the same interests as me can easily make friends that do awesome shit like go to cons together.

"Friends" I made at Fanime last year are now just people on Facebook that I met once - acquaintance level & not people I'd hang out with outside of that. It's the same thing this year, hitting it off with a few people at parties and having a good time. But it's bitter sweet since I know that they're just going to be people I have an awesome time with at a party, and nothing more. Hanging out with them at the con floor felt awkward and forced.

It's so incredibly lonely to be around a ton of awesome people with the same hobbies and interests as you, alone and by yourself, unable to make an authentic connection with someone despite knowing you could in a more organic situation. It's anxious knowing every single person around the South Bay that I could potentially become good friends with is gathered in one spot today - and me being sociable, open, and friendly, isn't enough to later-on have a group of people I hang out with on the weekends.

I'll give you the most important tip when it comes to making friends. Go to social events.

Meet as many new people as you can and eventually, you will find the ones that stick. I know it can feel awkward to hang out with new con friends at first and I know it sounds counter productive, but force it.

If you were able to get along with someone at a party, it shouldn't be different at the con. My current con group is made up of people I met at con parties and I tried my best to hang out with them and grow our friendship.

Just keep trying and if things don't work with one person, try again. Most feel the same way you do. You just have to reach out.

If you go to AX, you are more than welcome to hang out with my group.

After college, I had one best friend that I sadly haven't kept in regular contact with since I moved to CA. I honestly thought the Silicon Valley area would be filled with cool nerdy people and making authentic friends would just come naturally. Now, putting myself into an environment where there are a ton of people with the same hobbies as me, it's messing me up knowing Fanime legitimately isn't a place where making friends feels organic.

A party is definitely a super open and fun environment (with alcohol involved), that atmosphere doesn't translate over to the environment of a con-floor. I'm all for wanting to hang out with people I met at parties and potentially grow a friendship - but all too often I'm the only one doing it. Unless it's a mutual "hey you seem like a cool person, hit me up if you want to walk around Artist's Alley tomorrow with me", it's so incredibly forced on those one sided situations.

Next year I'm just going to get a single day badge if I still don't have anyone that wants to go with me. I feel really guilty about sitting at home, knowing I have the weekend pass and knowing there's potentially really fun shit going down at Fanime right now. But the balance of:

I also met up with the same (non-/cgl/) people I met last year at a party, and had a fantastic time. Not him, but i dont take any of these things personally, I think some people build up things too much. High expectations and bitterness run through all of 4chan like the Nile, and that doesn't speak to your efforts at all. You and beanie and frost and 9ball were all incredibly cool with me, and the people i saw around. The nature of meeting anonymous people demands a little scrutiny.
I ended up getting the plague but I hope to at least say goodbye to you all and hope for a brighter (SoCal) future.
It totally doesn't help there seems to be a cap on fun this whole con to some extent either.

I don't know about you guys, but I feel like Fanime, specifically THIS Fanime, is done. Unless you have shit to do in Dealer's Hall/Artist's Alley, all leftover panels/viewings/etc. are all throaways. I'm about to get a massage in front of Stage Zero (don't say shit; Ray is real, my dudes) after which I'm sort of outta things to do.
