Conventions are expensive enough without being nickled and dimed over every little thing. The masquerade is a main event, and main events are supposed to be included in your badge price. That's the bottom line. Just because they want a bigger tax write off doesn't mean they should start mandatory charging entry to main events.

Yeah, I went to ONE comicon and quit. Started going to anime cons to avoid that. SJ has always prided itself on everything being included with the badge price. I don't cosplay; it's too expensive for me. It's just a stupid idea. I don't think it helps that they're trying to roll in the masquerade ticket thing right with the date shift too. Plenty of people are already unhappy with the convention moving it's date to September, which is during school. Highschool and college kids are going to have to either go late on Friday or skip it all together (or skip their clases), just to attend the con. People are already annoyed and panicky about this, so adding another drastic change at the same time just isn't good planning imo.

Personally, I'm cool with the donations for tickets IF it's not mandatory. I already do charity work, and I have no trouble donating when I go pick a ticket up IF I agree with the charity. But donating to a cause I don't personally believe in just to attend a previously free event that I look forward to every year is a little irritating.

I'm a college student with classes generally on Friday so I'm stuck between skipping a day of class or going downtown late afternoon just to attend the con that day. This is just adding another headache on top of trying to plan around the new schedule shift.

That's just my thoughts on the matter.

What IS San Japan thinking? I feel like this whole thing is a really stupid move on their part and its really disappointing. I have friends renting a van to go to DragonCon that same weekend so I'm having to choose between the two and top kek, I'm doing DragonCon. I love San Japan and would like to attend it but oh well.

No you don't. That event is big. It always draws more people than it can support. Ticketing it means they won't have to waste as many resources managing a line. They've probably had a ton of people ask why they can't get tickets online in advance. If that many people are demanding it then they'll try this charity thing out. This is a Texas general thread, the guy in the article is Hioshi Jackson, there was a scandal concerning his paying to be a cosplay guest at Ikkicon a little while back and he's generally disliked in the Texas cosplay scene (and here on cgl) for being an asshole, passing off bought cosplays as his own work, scamming, pathological lying, etc., but now it's come to light that he's way more of a scumbag than any of us ever thought. And I was just honestly surprised that there wasn't a single mention of him in a Texas thread (instead just petty shitting on SJ for no reason) when this has been blowing up everywhere else lately.

-I've been going to cons since I was 12. They've almost always have fallen during school dates but I went regardless, so I don't see the big deal. A-fest has had that date for many years as well and it hasn't been a problem.
-The con chair of SJ isn't in this for the money or tax breaks he just genuinely wants nerds to have a good time. Big cons like AX have been charging for theirs and extra events for awhile now too. It's 750 tickets I doubt all those will be bought up and the rest will be first come later if you really can't afford $5 to help a charity, granted you don't get to choose but it'll probably be like Pets Alive since he's done stuff for that in that past. And who doesn't like to help animals??
-Also surprised Missy didn't dress up for Matsuri Mayhem but I think she's trying to steer it into being a con so tried to look professional. It was just poorly planned, kind of in the middle of no where, and right after mini-mini so that's why there was such a low turn out. On top of it was a Friday and doors opened right as people get out of school/work/traffic hour. I didn't stay long but I think the people that did go for things other than jfashion actually had a good time.

I didnt go last year, but the year before the line for the show spilled out into the road so fast that security had to scramble to redirect it so people didn't get run over by cars.
Bigger shows do stuff like this all the time because they can't fit all the people into the room and a small charge weeds enough people out that they don't have to have people waiting in line for 2 hours only to get turned away.

Comicpalooza has been pretty fun to just walk around the past few years for me. Turns out I know a guy who's up there in the organization of the con, and he said they were in pretty strong need of more volunteering hands to ensure everything runs smoothly with their guests. Hopefully that's not the case any more because they got a list of popular names coming in this year if I recall.

I'm still on the fence about volunteering as it starts right on my 21st and apparently they'd be asking me to help out the entire day all three days.

Comic cons generally have this weird competitive perception of anime cons; so many of them feel entitled to ALL nerd communities and feel like only they should be able to capitalize on them, which is why you see so many comic cons also pandering to weeaboos and gamers in the form of merch and guests even though the two genres are loosely connected to western comics at best. Many of these showrunners realized a long time ago that they cannot justify expensive badge prices on comic entertainment alone, so they prioritize quantity over quality of programming and expecting all other fan events to just deal with it while they expand and flood the market.
Fan Expo made a really big dick move not only scheduling this shit on the same weekend, but also snagging several popular anime voice actors like Chris Sabat and Eric Vale and making them unavailable to A-Kon. The only way this will stop is if the industry guests refuse to do shows like this in the future, but making money as a VA is hard enough so unfortunately I can't see many of them stepping up and prioritizing the health of the community any time soon.

Delta h con is incredibly boring. Not much going on, very limited in terms of panels, guests, and vendors. Full of young weebs too and not much of a party scene. Also pretty puny.

Onicon is more lively since its on the beach, so it's for sure more fun. I didn't go last year though so I can't say it improved from the past or the current size of it but I had friends who had fun. It's more for mingling than for panels and guests really.

Hey guys. Gonna warrant more bashing, but I thought I'd jump in while this post is still here.

1. The drama with my ex boyfriend was over a year ago. Yeah, I had some growing-up problems and I lashed out at others and clung to people because I was afraid of being alone. I feel extremely awful for making that post about him, but I NEVER said he raped me. Rape is a serious thing. Everything between him and I was consensual, though it was for the wrong reasons. The stuff that happened between him and I should've never been posted and I regretted it hours after doing it. To this day I wish I could undo it.

2. Please don't insult my girlfriend. She has nothing to do with any of my drama and she doesn't deserve to have her name dragged through the mud because of me. She's extremely mature and the only stable person I've ever dated so far. I love her dearly and she has helped me in many many ways.

3. The "Love Live" drama at Anime Matsuri wasn't drama. I created a LL group months and months before Anime Matsuri and someone set up a Love Live meetup that same day. Unfortunately it was also the same time we had shoots scheduled, so I didn't get to hang out at the meetup and a lot of the girls in my group needed to go take c are of other things. I only fought with 3 LL girls that I knew, and it was because they were fighting with one of my friends in my status and it pissed me off. I lost my temper and I tried to apologize and make it up to them, but we all needed time to cool off. Two of them still hate me, which desu, we never really cliqued too well from the beginning. One of them I made civil terms with and to my knowledge, everything is fine. If any of them are talking about me in this post, well...I'm here if you guys actually wanna talk to me about what happened.

4. Those dirty pics are from my ex boyfriend (not Cris) from like 4 years ago. He SOLD them, because he was pissed off at me that I wouldn't get back together with him because it was such an unhealthy relationship. He's pretty awful, but when I confronted him about the pics appearing online, I had to pry it out of him--he just...sold them. To random fucking people on the internet. Yeah, I'm pissed. But they've been circling for a couple years now, so I can't fight it anymore. Most people have dirty pics these days and they should be kept to the person you trusted, but that's not the case. There's no point in slut-shaming me or any other girls who have been outed like this on the internet. That site is a disgusting website. Filled with nonconsensually posted pictures of girls who probably don't even know they're there. I've had to contact some of them and warn them and teach them how to get them taken down. It's vicious and it's wrong. You can call me all the names you want to, but when you sexually abuse and exploit someone, you've pretty much crossed the line.

5. I used "Hime" as a last name because it sounds cute and I like the hime-style anime characters. They're hilarious. It also reminds me of lolita--which I still like. I don't really wear it anymore because of HLC drama and I'm sure some of those people are in this thread. I don't use my real name anymore because I don't want fans or coworkers to find my personal cosplay stuff or my personal life stuff. I don't want stalkers and I don't want my totally non-nerdy and usually straight-knit Christian bosses to know I'm dating a girl and do weird Halloween shenanigans everyday. Doesn't look good on most resumes, you know? lol

6. Cinder/RWBY -- yes, I love RWBY! It's a lot of fun. I met my girlfriend through it and some really amazing friends. It has been a life-changing experience for me. I'm sure everyone has something they're very passionate about. Obviously I'm not a mass-murdering villain from a fictional TV show. Anyone who actually /hasn't/ disrespected me or who has gotten the chance to know me, knows that I'm actually a very nice person, I'm just extremely sensitive to people you know...stabbing me in the back, gossiping about me, lying to me, etc. I've gotten better about keeping my mouth shut. I don't just pick fights to pick fights. I stand up for myself and my friends and point it out when people are being awful to others...kinda like this thread, but it's the internet. And the guy I "exploded" on his status about is the same guy who posts nothing but "I don't like something, give me attention." Sorry, dude, but I got sick of it. No offense to you, but if you post your unwanted opinion somewhere, someone is gonna say something. I am friends with a TON of people who knew RWBY's creator, INCLUDING MY GIRLFRIEND. A human being you actually looked up to and cared about being DEAD and listening to people bitch about how he wasn't that cool is kinda upsetting. I also have a deep connection with RWBY/Monty to my grandparents who I loved dearly and who raised me a big chunk of my life. One of the songs from the new RWBY OST reminds me of them and it's just special to me. I'm human and I have emotions and I invest myself in things! So do you. :)

I think that's alot of what it is. I have crap self esteem and saw that someone normal like myself not like yaya han or jessica nigri (I don't mean that in an offensive way at all) had a following. For someone that has 0 experience, is just starting up, and is a man in really bad costumes, I'd say it's pretty outrageous. Most of the decent ones I see are $75-$125 for an hour and the princesses actually do activities with the kids.
