Even if the print is subtle, if you're making a coord based on the theme of the print, then it's still a fandom coord. If you're just wearing the jsk in a normal way, I wouldn't consider it a fandom coord at that point, unless the whole dress is basically made up of the theme.

I know nothing about HP and have no idea who this is supposed to be (am just assuming it's from Harry Potter with the forced cosplay-ish wand prop and eccentric hairstyle.) Looks like an unfinished gothic lolita coord so it fails on the lolita side to me. I have no hints outside the wand really it's probably HP so it needs more elements of the character or series. This. I don't like fandom or overly 'inspired' lolita. It makes the fashion seem even more like a costume and more easily mistaken for random cosplay in public. That's one reason why there are 'no cosplay' rules at con tea parties, etc.
And yes, I know it's not going to die and people will continue to get 'creative', fashion evolving, blah-blah-blah. But some of us have just never liked it at all either.

I don't think the Disney collabs or the Phantom dress are 'fandom lolita' unless worn with character costume accessories. I do like >>9013347 coord.

There is very little good "fandom lolita" that isn't at least bordering on actual cosplay. Theme meets encourage this too so I don't usually attend them. I'm not up for spending my fashion money to buy things to accessorize my lolita dress as a costume. Exception: Halloween party meet. I might do it for that when actual costumes are expected and accepted.
Plus a lot of the fandom coords look pretty tacky to me and I sure wouldn't be very happy to see them on someone at a public meet where we were all going out somewhere nice for tea. I think they are honestly about on the same level as steampunk lolita, just a mashup of lolita x something else.

I really liked some of the IW x Rozenmaiden too but they still looked very much like cosplay in the style. Most of them went to 1/2 price and then into lucky/oddment packs too so I'm not the only one who maybe liked them but found them too much like costumes to be suitable for actual lolita fashion coords. If we look at lolita as just clothes though, then it should be easy to portray your fandom. In normal clothes, a fandom thing would usually just be a printed tshirt or smth with maybe themed jewelry. I don't understand why lolitas don't reflect that in their own lolita clothing. Props or character wigs are going way too far imo.

Personally I enjoy Fandom coords. I feel it's no different than doing a sea or chocolate theme. Fandom coords are fun and usually really inspired.

It's hard to argue that this concept is bringing Lolita into costume territory when the current state of Lolita fashion is OTT with a mess of items on your head and a scepter/prop in each hand.

My opinion I think is similar to other girls in the thread but basically... I think fandom stuff is fine and fun. Just like regular lolita coords, girls can go OTT and make a clusterfuck. Because blocks of bright, bold color tend to not translate very well into the soft details of lolita. It's slightly easier to use the color-combos of comic book characters into fashions like retro or otome, where bold pops of color are encouraged.

If lolita is like cake, then otome and retro are like pie. Western superhero outfit designs are definitely on the "pie" end of this spectrum.

Not to mention the people who attempt to make lolita with superhero themes, usually do not pony up money and work into details like ruffles, pleats, quality lace, decent fabric... And we're not even getting into print selection. (Dear lord the pyjama print selection.)

I'm not saying it's impossible to do a themed lolita for superhero, but it's an uphill battle because you're trying to merge two very different aesthetics from the start.

Actually, they were pretty fail on the cosplay side, too, a lot of the costumes were inaccurate -- Shinku's ribbons should have been green isntead of black, Suigintou's outfit has a different bodice and crosses on her skirt, Suiseiseiki's dresss was too short, Kirakishou's outfit should have been a bubble skirt, Kanariya's jacket didn't have the high-low hem, etc, etc.

I think that's a big part of why they flopped, most of their items didn't really work for either cosplay or lolita.

This is pretty terrible, though. So much tacky cringey plastic junk, white blouse with ivory-accented dress, moon bag for ice princess, and at least three different blues that don't match each other, and we haven't even mentioned the tacky wig.

There's too many "ice queen"s floating around to make this a Frozen fandom coord either, nothing about this specifically references Frozen over the traditional Snow Queen (Hans Christian Andersen) or Narnia's White Witch or any other ice-type character.

Yeah, but Western quilting fabric is marketed at quilters who use it as only a small part of a larger project. Most of the time, the fabric is much brighter and much kitschier, because it's only intended to be used in small portions, not to make a whole dress out of.

The rule seems to go double or triple for fandom fabric, I've rarely ever found anything nerdy that isn't some weird bright colours that don't work as a dress. Toned down fabric seems to be the exception, and girls tend to overlook them because it's not as exciting as Zelda fabric or cupcakes fabric.

Anytime someone wants to sew with quilting fabric, especially if it has a nerdy or tacky print on it, they really need to look at the colours first, before even doing anything else. If the colours aren't toned down pastels or dusty colours, just drop the project, it's guaranteed ita from just the colours alone, nevermind whether the print is too small or too busy.

I think it's because now there are a lot of lolita's who are also cosplayers. In my comm when there is a themed meet-up they talk about cosplaying this or that character wearing lolita. And to cosplayers it's really important to look like the character so that's why they use wigs or imitate it.

Nothing against cosplayers but that's why I stopped going to themed meet-ups, they feel like cosplay meets now and it's just not my thing.

Mixing fandom and lolita is not a big deal but I can see why some people get sensitive about it, maybe some lolita's don't want to be grouped in with weebs and/or cosplayers? But people acting like it's not allowed or it can't be lolita or something are just wrong.

That being said, a lot of these coords look more like costume than a fashion. If you saw a Malice Mizer fan in the street and you don't know what Malice Mizer is you would just think it's a nice gothic lolita coord. The big difference, though, is that Mana modeled for his own gothic lolita brand. It's not like lolitas went out and bought a bunch of things to put together to "look like" their Mana-sama. If you simply have black hair, fair skin and buy the full set of Divine Crosss in black x gold colourway, that's pretty much his entire look in the promo photos for Divine Cross.

So saying that lolitas look like Mana cosplayers is like saying lolitas look like Misako cosplayers whenever they buy any dress she models in the GLB.

Moitiefags don't so much look like Mana, as much as Mana himself *is* the head Moitiefaggest of them all, it was his brand to begin with, and it had a pretty narrow gothic lolita bampire romance kind of aesthetic, so it makes sense they all look somewhat similar.


It's actually easier to tell when people are actually cosplaying Mana, because his stage look included threatrical things like blue hair or blue lipstick that actual gothic lolitas rarely wore irl, plus the band's costumes weren't actually anything you could buy from the Moitie shop anyway.

On the flipside, various GLB models have done makeup and hair tutorials. Equally, copying a model's look doesn't mean one is trying to cosplay whichever model the look is from, some girls might just like the look and want to experiment with it. The kind of lip-drawing Mana uses doesn't lend itself to many substyles, heck, his whole makeup is pretty much gothic. That would explain why only gothic lolitas, particularly Moitiefags have tried it.

I get what you're referring to, there were probably girls who had Mana shrines, bought everything Mana, have all the Malice Mizer albums and can sing along to them (?), and consciously bought Moitie outfits and Moitie lipsticks in order to be more like him.

I think I'm just saying Moitie's not the best example for "fandom lolita", since Moitie is an actual brand that actually produced pretty decent clothes, including one iconic print that goes for a bomb secondhand amongst lolitas. It's possible to be a fan of the Mana look, pretty much the same way someone might be a fan of AP and try to buy everything AP and copy AP's photoshoots, without actually being a fan of Mana himself, his band, or the weird harpsichord rock music they make, so sweeping every Moitiefag under the Mana cosplay rug is pretty inaccurate.

No, they aren't. Fandom themed coordinates aren't some new invention, they've been going on since forever. To me, there is no difference between saying "My coordinate was inspired by alice/marie antoinette/rococo" (all lolita approved themes) and saying "my coordinate was inspired by disney/harry potter/sailor moon".

I think the problem with cosplay lolita is that people design them too much like a cosplay and not enough like lolita. Not many do a good balance and end up with a color blocked, poorly shaped mess. At least when they're handmade.
I think there's a fundamental problem with people learning how to make cosplays rather than learning how to make clothes too and that just kind of fucks them up. It's like learning how to draw "anime style" when you should be learning anatomy.

B.) Lolita is obviously not daily wear, but it is still fashion. It's high fashion, like runway and fashion shoot looks. With a costume you're trying to be a character of some sort; with high fashion you are creating a stylized outfit that's more of a wearable art piece. Some (rare) lolitas will wear it as their daily clothing but only the truly delusional among us will act like it's normal clothing.

I'll admit I'm nitpicking but I'm just hoping to give you a better understanding of why lolita is truly fashion. Also normies think all kinds of shit is a costume, I've been complimented on my costume when I was wearing a f21 galaxy print dress, no accessories, and low heeled black boots.

I believe the general consensus on thjs board is that lolita is first and foremost clothes that are for the most part, appropriate to wear whenever clothes need to be worn. OTT or "high fashion" type looks are the rarities reserved for events and meet ups where you may dress to impress or match a particular theme, and I don't think that is necessarily what lolita fashion is all about.
Lolita is a fashion yes but it is clothing meant to be worn whether to a tea party or just out to run errands. It's not some pompous art piece to keep stowed away.

Even casual lolita isn't normal clothing, the most low key coord will still look very ott to non lolitas. It's good to wear lolita whenever you want, it's just not something you do and then expect not to stand out.
Girls who wear lots of makeup are also walking around with wearable art on their faces. That doesn't mean they have to save the contouring for special occasions, just that they are taking the time to go above and beyond the norm.

This is just based on my experience with the lolita's I've met irl. Since more cosplayers have joined the local comm, you see more wigs, more OTT, etc. And more lolita's who only wear it around 5-10 times a year to an anime con or meet-up. In that way I think it has influenced lolita but maybe not everyone´s experience is the same.
Family and friends have never mistaken lolita style for a costume, they know it's a clothing style because 90% of my clothes are like that. But if the girl next door would dress up in OTT lolita once a month and wears jeans the rest of the time, of course normies will think it's a costume.
