Watching some of @homw's videos, the girls all have hair colors that are somewhat natural (even the blonde girls don't have yellow hair ) and in nice simple hairstyles. I think a unique hair color and style per maid would look ok as long as they were natural colors and not really -out there- styles. I think the person who said that its a fantasy for the customer and not the maids hit the nail on the head. People who set up cafes in america usually hire their friends or try not to be mean by turning someone away because they're not cute. It's amateur. If they at least had the hiring standards of Hooters, and they weren't all moe moe kyun desu, they could get away with it. MAYBE.

Theme cafes can work (like pirate theme!) as long as it's either for kids, or there is alcohol involved. I've done pirate-themed boat ride type things that were lots of fun. During the day, they catered to kids with a simple story and at night it was tailored for drunk people with suggestive jokes and they gave out shots. A bar/restaurant could easily copy that idea and do a pirate theme, or a magic theme, or

But maid theme is just weird in the US unless it's strip club type fetish maids in vegas. We just don't have a cultural concept of maid theme like Japan does. Maid anime isn't on TV here. The closest thing is stuff like downton abbey, but I would argue that most viewers see themselves more like the help in those shows than the aristocrats who are often played up as being ridiculously out of touch.

Here's a more recent picture of them. They've got more cute maids and I think their uniforms are now regulated. When they were starting out, all the maids had to make their own uniforms, which is probably still the case, but I think they use the same basic pattern now at least.

I think they also have normal uniforms too, but the hotel that hosted this con wouldn't let them serve food. They're just recycling these uniforms that I believe were made for Asian culture fest performances since the theme for the con was hana matsuri.
I think some the girls are missing from the photo though, since I know some of them. I can't vouch for how they are as an actual maid café though, since I stopped going to their events a long time ago.

There's 2 maid cafés in Scotland and they're on very different ends of the spectrum.
Marshmallow Dreams runs at convention events and have the occasional cafe in a suitable city centre location, all the girls are well polished, cute and just of a very good calibre. Pic related.

Maid In Scotland on the other hand is disorganised, cringey and all the girls bar maybe two are ungroomed/badly dyed hair/greasy, a creepy neckbeard 'butler' and one obese girl who sticks out like a sore thumb. The events are more frequent but it's mostly just friends of the maids who go. I'll post pic below.

I think a western maid cafe would do better if they ditched the cute and went more classy. A standard uniform and a dress code which includes hair and makeup would work.

It would also have to be more of a classy-tea room, although that makes it a different experience than a weeby maid cafe.

In fact I think a classy tea-room with maids would actually do better business in Japan than it would here.

Head Maid of almost ten years coming out of lurking here.

I wrote a panel and explored the social science behind why maid cafes can exist in Japan and are actually incredibly successful, vs why they don't and won't ever work in the United States, for example. The simple explanation is that the cultural mindset or zeitgeist is just nonexistent in American culture.

Maid cafes do very well in Japan because they're centered on the idea of creating a safe "fantasy" or "non-real" space. Outcasts who usually feel out-of-place in all or most aspects of modern Japanese society find the maid cafe to be a "safe space" fabricated just for them. They're free to exist and be themselves in this space. I think the audience is much larger and more concentrated in Japan, especially within the city limits of Tokyo or more specifically Akihabara.

The market DOES exist in America; it's why anime conventions and the like can exist in the first place. Those are fabricated "safe" spaces as well. But the market for maid cafes isn't big enough to sustain them all year round, for instance. The New York cafe was a good experiment. It eventually failed. And we can look to that silly Detroit cafe as a clear example.

You've got to have basic business sense if you want to open a maid cafe, you've got to be a people person, you've got to be able to be confident, you've got to learn to trust and rely on other people, you've got to be willing to work for a team, you've got to be willing to put in the hours, you've got to learn basic acting, and you've got to be a teacher. It's actually all very fascinating.

That said, you've also got to be professional.

Also, a lot of cafes don't work as actual cafes because the hotel or convention spaces just can't or won't accommodate a cafe which serves food unless the licensing is there (it's expensive) or unless the hotel/center is making money from it.

Just an idea but I feel like if you played the line between a few things it would have a much wider appeal. For instance, you could do a maid cafe that appealed to the weeby culture, I mean like the fact its a maid cafe, have some cutesy food, a few girls in thigh highs ect; but then also make appeals to the wider populace, for instance taking advantage of game of throne's popularity, get the girls to call the costumers, my lord, lady, ser ect which would help appeal not only to medieval fantasy type stuff, but also weebs into kuroshitsuji and the likes as well as teaboos. Have the girls all in actually matching uniforms with only one or so alterable part, for instance skirt length, and maybe let them have a small embroidered sigil on the apron or vest to further cater to the got fans. Possibly have different coloured skirts allowed but that might look messy. Actual quality uniforms would have to be made to avoid looking like Halloween serving wench costumes. Attractive girls would obviously help and makeup and well styled or looked after hair in my opinion would also do the cafe a lot of favours. I also think it would be up to the girls to figure out to pander more to the moe appeal or otherwise but you could always have some sort of question at the start to help the maids figure it out?

@home cafe is so polished,and there is a level of care and detail they put forward so I can see why they're the best. Their new uniforms are so freaking pretty and the staff wear their own accessories but still look uniform. I've been to Maidreaming as well since they are the second most popular, but the staff there are more lax, they're less formal, they're not as dedicated with their performing and they are less strict about looks as well, I've seen maids with deep voices and unfortunate looks at Maidreaming and while it's more realistic I think if you're going for full fake fantasy @home is the maid cafe to go to. I think the problem with overseas cafes is that they're too lax, they clearly don't tailor the maid uniforms to look good on the maids, they don't have restrictions, so like if a girl is ugly or unkempt she will be picked simply because she volunteered. I personally feel all maids should be of a similar size and height, so anyone over a certain weight or certain height should not be hired. Obese maids should not be hired either and if a maid is chubby or overweight she will need to have her costume tailored to her so that she doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. A lot of these cafes just don't give a fuck, they have no sense of polish or professionalism so they're let any busted looking weeb put on a dress and play maid for a day.

Contacted them and asked and they said that not only would you not get paid for anything and all tips would go back to the 'company because they paid for the ingredients and everything', but you would have to buy your own hotel room and ticket to the con. Unfortunately with con cafes, it's generally filled by volunteers. Our con maid cafe has fairly strict application and interview processes, and we haven't been afraid to remove people causing trouble in the past. But even then, as its unpaid work, you can try your hardest but you can't force maids/butlers to look impeccable. You can regulate uniform, but if someone refuses to wear a wig or do their makeup it's either let them be or let them go.

And as its voluntary, in regards to forcing people to shave their arms etc.- you can ask, but in some cases it's quite awkward and personal if they're not real employees and only people you work with for a few days a year. And constantly kicking people out is bad for business as you lose serving numbers, members for dances/performances and have to rework whole aspects of the cafe.

I went to a maid cafe alone one time at an anime convention just for the hell of it since I had some time to kill. Important thing to note is that this was during a very sad period in my life.

Paid like 10 bucks for a can of coke and a few pieces of lukewarm chicken on a bed of lettuce. The maid I was with was really nice and we had a common interest in Love Live but I felt like I was boring her to death. Not her fault, I was in full on depression mode at the time so I wasn't a very good conversation partner.

Don't know if I'll ever do it again. Though to be fair the other meals looked way nicer than what I got.

Doing an alternative theme from time to time can be nice too, provided that the theme is cohesive enough (& you already handle the default maid theme fine as a whole group)

I'm pretty sure anyone working with a convention has an 18+ rule so that the con heads don't feel like pedophiles and most likely for some other legal reasons. Maid cafes that have 16+ as a requirement is only because it's probably being run by a 16 year old or it's separated from the convention and/or they wanted their underage friend in their cafe.

Florida Anime Experience just posted this image of their maid cafe this year.

It really isn't pretty, the angle of the shot makes them all look really manly, bottom right especially.

The con is literally in 11 days, it looks like Croom just shoved some girls together in a poorly angled photo and posted it as advertisement. The uniforms are also all over the place, jesus.

Not true, top 2 most famous maid cafes in Japan do not use black and white uniforms, @home is brown and white and maids are allowed to accessorize however they like and Maidreamin usually has Navy blue and white uniforms with pink accents.

If you're familiar with the restaurant industry or hell, if you've watched a few episodes of Kitchen Nightmares or similar shows, you should know that a lot of new restaurants end up going under (something like 60% will fail in their first year, 80% will fail in less than five years). I can only imagine how bad it is for a niche category like maid cafes.

I kinda want to see Gordan Ramsay show up at a failing maid cafe and try to turn it around now.

I've seen Maids of England perform at cons before and they are grossly uncoordinated, also at least one of the members is seriously chubby and doesn't look good in the maid outfits at all or can sing for shit

There are reviews on their fb. I've heard of decent things about them, but never gone when I've gone to AMW.

I have a friend in that group, so maybe if my finances go well between now and then (and if we get a lolita guest again), I might go and finally see for myself.

Said friend shared a story about how she got decent tips for putting up with gross neckbeards, but how it got stolen by the maid managers before the weekend ended. I wonder how often this sort of thing happens in maid cafes.

I think it's because places like hooter's are way more popular, which means they have more applicants who fit the look they want. Maid cafes, especially con volunteer ones, aren't going to get that many applications and the type of people who even know what a maid cafe is aren't typically the most fit.

Well, I'm going to tell my experience as a maid in a local con. (at first, sorry because english is not my mother tongue)

I've been 2 years in a Maid Cafe, I got into that through a friend, I was so happy. But the first year it wasn't a mess at all, only the most of the maids were kids/fatty/ugly as hell.
I don't remember being so stressed as those days. Most of them didn't know how to cook, how to be cute and bosses didn't know what to buy, so at the end, I've made all of the hard work. I couldn't be so cute I would like to be, cooking is so frustrating with wig, lens and a heavy outfit, but customers went out happy because there was delicious food (at least).

The second year it was a huge mess, bosses without a fucking idea how to run a Maid Cafe, hiring fool cute girls, less money to buy things, fatty with ugly face maid, there were more cute maids but they didn't know how to cook neither! And the most of time with a face of being in a funeral.

Making a Maid Cafe is hard, I would like to make it with cute girls, but it's hard to find cute + cooking knowledge + polish girls.
