This. The problem also lies in those people not knowing what's the appropriate outlet to vent/cry/seek help.

Maybe I'm wrong in this because hey, there are some people who just need to share everything, but isn't there usually some sense of shame that comes with mental disorders? Idk. I usually have friends seeking help or even someone to vent to via PM because it's hard to tell people something so difficult without feeling judged.

On one hand, teenage brains are rewiring in similar ways of a toddler or a very young child, so you get a lot of self-absorbed behaviors; on the other hand, destructive behaviors tend to be ignored and thought of as a phase toward teens - it seems to me that this kid should really make the effort to see a doctor before it continues into adulthood. I knew people who carried on cutting in their twenties. Depression just doesn't go away.

I don't think the problem has to do with lolita.

Also - every community is gonna have fucking mentally ill people. Shit, there's one at my job. In fact, there's always one person in every group of people that has some kind of mental illness because there are so many kinds out there. You're bound to run into them.

And aside from that, most people aren't okay. Everyone has some kind of issue.

Out of the 8 people I've met irl from this site and various boards but mostly /soc/ - only one is a decent person. He's got his shit together but I wouldn't call him "sane".
The other 7 were exactly what you'd expect. Fat gross mentally ill slobs with cheeto dust on their fingers and all they talked about was some fucking jrpg or DOTA2 or league or whatever is popular for fucking fatties who never leave their comp.

That being said, I've not met any lolitas from 4chan but my friend used to date a girl who was into into oldschool only and she was fucking batshit - ACCORDING TO THEM. I only met her a few times, so I couldn't tell if she was a sane person and they just didn't like dating her or if she was a wild pain in the ass and they weren't being biased about their relationship with her.

I only got to see her in lolita once and it was because she got back from Kumoricon and had on your typical black & white oldschool coord.
At the time I wasn't into lolita but I knew of it, so I don't remember what dress it was.

I agree on that. I was really upset about the "make up brushes in kitty litter" post. Then someone quickly reminded me, that probably didn't happen and that a lot of things on this board as well as others, are often lies or very wild exaggerations.

That's why it's pretty silly to get upset over the stuff posted here. It's either, a) not true or b) something ridiculously over the top like say a reaction to something or an opinion on something.

There were people frequenting /tv/ for a long time who was tell you to kill yourself if you didn't like pedo child actor threads. Back when they had a thread for ever live action disney show on air and the threads were dedicated to posting pictures of child actors doing risque things.
I think those threads eventually got banned but I'm sure they still pop up on occasion but I stopped browsing there long ago.

I've been here since 2008. Used to frequent /co/ and /tv/ and then eventually /ck/ became like my home board and I'd check out /ic/ on occasion.
Started out on /b/ and /v/ back in like 2009 ish I think? /tv/ and /b/ were my first boards and then I moved on to /v/.

Now I just browse /cgl/ as I don't really have anything for the other hobbies anymore and those boards aren't talking about the things I like any longer.. like I said with /tv/, that ended a long time ago...

I think there's a good amount of awfulness on all of those boards that I delved that deep into.

Something as simple as /ck/ manages to have really ridiculous drama.

And let's not forget stuff like pol and /a/ for that matter.

There's a reason why people call this the asshole of the internet. It's just shit on top of shit. Everyone here is shit.

I literally ended up getting into lolita about 3 years ago because I voraciously consumed the insane BTBs. I was fairly convinced many lolitas were crazy bulimic cutting drug addled pedophiles so I started browsing cgl to see if it was true. Now that I've delved into both online and offline communities, lolita has about the same amount of crazies as any other niche hobby and lucky for me, none in my local comm.

One of the advantages of an anonymous board is that people have an outlet to vent all their inner thoughts which they don't dare voice in public. There arecthreads on 2chan and girlschannel called "detox threads" where people will spew out things about their coworkers, spouses, Koreans, etc. which make our confession threads seem tame.

Most people unfamiliar with either anonymous boards or women, will derive from their first impression cgl that we're all psychotic bitches.

In terms of the level of mental illness among lolitas, it's the same with other hobby groups. If you've ever attended a chess tournament and seen how "normal" the contestants are, you'll know what I mean.

Given how expensive lolita is, it may even have less mental illness than other hobbies. You won't last very long being sick, while maintaining an expensive hobby, while holding down a regular job to maintain the hobby. Therapy costs tons of money. Not taking therapy also costs tons of money, if your untreated illness makes you lose your job.

There was one cringy person in our comm who actually seemed mentally ill, in that she had no idea how to normally talk with other people, but guess what? She can't hold down a job, meaning she can't even afford going out for a latte. So we haven't seen her show up to any meet in months.

Lolitas get the reputation of having drama, but I wonder what part of that is because people want to hear stories of drama about pretty-outside-but-mean-inside women, a la Mean Girls. The fact is all hobby groups have drama. Cosplay has drama, gyaru fashion has drama, LARP has drama, etc. I've seen a fucking meetup.com group for TEA that turned out to have huge drama, among the men. Straight men.

I could also imagine that a lot of rebellious or fame-hungry girls may be initially attracted to lolita because of how outlandishly feminine it is. But they flouce, and quickly.
